The nineteenth stop of the 2005/2006 McDermott All American Tour(produced by the American CueSports Alliance – ACS) featured a $1,000-added purse and forty-two players hosted by owner Toby Faas at Yogee’s

in Roseburg, Oregon, on the weekend of April 8-9. The event featureddouble-elimination 9-ball on 7-foot Valley bar boxes. Mike Cronk of MyrtleCreek, Oregon, marched undefeated through the winner’s bracket, defeating Tom Huynh (Roseburg, OR) in the winner’s bracket finals 7-6.In the B-side quarterfinals, Ken Cavener (Grants Pass, OR) eliminatedRandy Baker (Coos Bay. OR) 7-3, while Greg Christensen (Bend, OR)ousted his son, Jesse Christensen (Bend., OR) 7-2. Cavener then finishedGreg Christensen’s run by a 7-3 margin in the B-side semifinals, only tobe turned out himself by Tom Huynh in the finals. Huynh had to defeatMike Cronk twice to gain the title, and he succeeded in the first set by a7-5 score, only to have Cronk turn the tables by the identical 7-5 marginin tourney finals to claim the championship.By virtue of being the highest-finishing ACS member, Mike Cronk won afree entry into the 2006 ACS National 8-Ball Championships – courtesyof the ACS. Rick VanBerger won the McDermott Cue raffle. The ACSwishes to thank sponsors McDermott Handcrafted Cues, Silver CupChalk, PJ’s Billiard Supply Co. and Samm’s Side Pocket Productions fortheir support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops onthe McDermott All American Tour. Is this a resurgence of 14-1 or just a fluke? A record-setting 18 playersparticipated in Sam’s Billiards Straight Pool Tournament, April 2, 2006.With over a decade of consecutive 1st- Sunday-of-the-month tournamentsthis turnout tops the previous high of 16. As one of two regular venues for14-1 tournaments in the region, Sam’s draws players from as far awayas Seattle. About a third of the players were from outside of the Portlandarea for this tournament. Robert Colby of Olympia took first place withfive convincing victories. Only Tracy Fannin got more than half as manypoints as Robert in his 50-28 match. Darin Walding edged John Flemingin the finals round 50-47 to take second place. John beat Bill Bradford 50-16 for third place. Due to the luck of the draw, Justin Lilje was paired withJohn in the initial round. Justin was barely beat in the timed match 36-34.Justin later had a run of 27, but John’s run of 33 was the tops for the day.1st $75 Robert Colby2nd $60 Darin Walding3rd $45 John Fleming - High Run: 334th $25 Bill Bradford

by: Chris Rogers, Tournament Director

On April 22 & 23rd, the NWPA held tour stop #2 at the Cue Ball inSalem, Oregon. Once again, we had players from all over Washington,Oregon and Canada participating, including a local player playing in herfirst NWPA event, Marion Morales. Jim Lebold, owner of the Cue Ballhas been our longest sponsor, again, supplying the girls with free coffee, doughnuts and snacks as he has done every year. Thanks Jim!The girls had one more added surprise, Ford traveled to Oregon to helpas Tournament Official. Thank you Ford for all the entertainment andsupport.

The big news at the player meeting was that our fourth stop atMcQ’s in Spokane is being sponsored this year by The Break. Thismeans our next four stops are all qualifiers in addition to the regularadded money. The goal for next year is now, of course, for everytournament to be one.

On Saturday, play went so smoothly that a group of us made it toa local 9 ball tourney and took off with all the prize money, some peoplejust never get enough of pool. But Sunday, had the money rounds andthat’s where all the excitement happens.

Playing for the point match was Linda Carter, who was continuingher great playing after winning our first event. However, Mary Hopkinwas also red hot and managed to hold Linda off winning 7-3 sendingLinda to the B side. Julie Valdez was playing Kim Jones, who is lookinglike a regular on Sundays, and Kim took it 7-1. Also, Joanne Ashton ofCalgary, BC battled Andrea Saenz-Maes and won 7-4. In the 4th placematch, Joanne really took off and Kim was forced to watch a 7-2 loss. This set up traveling roommates in Linda and Joanne (Linda havingknocked Joanne into the B side on Saturday), with Joanne in stroke easilysliding to the finals by defeating Linda 7-2.

In the finals, both players started out at the top of their games, butas the match wore on, Joanne missed a couple of key shots and Marytook advantage and went on to a 9-6 victory. Congratulation to Mary forher first victory in over a year.

Remember, our next stop is a Qualifier at Jillians in Seattle onJune 24 & 25th, so sign up early or come out to watch and we’ll see youthen.1st Mary Hopkin $315 200 points2nd JoAnne Ashton $215 160 points3rd Linda Carter $175 125 points4th Kim Jones $90 100 points5/6 Andrea Saenz-Maes $55 80 points

Julie Valdez $55 80 points

The Impossible Cut This month’s Artistic Shot is from the Trick and / or Fancy Disciplineand has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 10.

Here is a great proposition shot that could win you a few beers. Let’stake a look at the set up. The object ball is frozen to the cushion at thecenter diamond. The cue ball is placed on the head spot. The objective ofthis skill shot is to cut the object ball into pocket C or F, your choice. Here are a few helpful hints to aid you to successfully execute this greatskill shot. Use the same cue to shoot this shot each time. I use almostmaximum left English along the cue balls horizontal axis. Try to keepyour cue as level to the plane of the table as possible to minimize curve.I use a medium speed on this shot and let the English do the work ofmaking the object ball. I start my aiming by applying the English to thecue ball and aiming the center of my shaft at the same point on the objectball. You will have to vary your aim because of the amount of deflectionyour cue has. The cue ball must hit the cushion first, just missing theobject ball and the spin will cause the ball to hug the cushion and bepocketed. Be sure to get the correct odds when you shoot this shot. Ifyou can make it in three attempts ask for five tray’s.Good luck with this one.

A Banking System Than WorksBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy

May 2006www.onthebreaknews.comPage 8

If you have ever tried to bank systematically, you’ve probably found out that there are lots ofcorrections to be added in for speed, cloth, spinon the object ball, angle of cut, humidity and phaseof the Moon. Here is a system that works wellmost of the time and the setup I show below willallow you to quickly test how well it works for awide range of situations. With all systems for banking and kicking, you needto state at the start what kind of spin and speedwill be used for shots in the system. Angles offthe cushions obviously change for kick shots whenyou have side spin on the cue ball, and they alsochange as the speed of the ball is changed. Thesystem below works for bank shots with no spinon the object ball when it hits the cushion. The simplest system for banking balls one

cushion is the mirror system. Let’s look at it first to see how well it works. It says that the angle of the ball into the rail is equal and opposite to theangle of the ball coming out of the rail. We are going to bank a ball off theleft cushion to make it in pocket A.First set up the table as follows. You will need a bar stool. Put a ballcentered in the jaws of pocket A. Put another in the jaws of pocket B. Nowput a third object ball on the bar stool in line with balls A and B and as farfrom B as A is, at C. Make sure you have this right within half an inch orso. Remove the ball hanging in pocket A.Now, if you bank a ball off the left cushion towards the ball on the barstool, and if the ball obeys the mirror bankingprinciple, it will go in pocket A. Try some shots from various locationsand see how well the system works forvarious speeds and such. Can you find a single approach that makesballs from all angles and distances? I can’t.

Next, move the ball and bar stool about a foot towards the table but alongthe same line, so there is a little less than three diamonds distance fromball B, at D. This is a first guess for the system. That distance may haveto be adjusted for your table. My claim is that if you send a ball into the left rail and it is going towardsthe barstool ball D, it will goin pocketA, provided that it is notspinning when it hits thecushion. If the object ballis nearly on the cushion, like ball X, having no spin iseasy to accomplish. Setthe cue ball for a straightshot at D, and shootstraight at the ball. If the ballbanks a little long or short, move D a little closer orfarther from B but makesure you move along the A-B-D line.Try shooting a ball at X atvarious speeds. I think youwill find that there is verylittle change in the bankingangle as you change thespeed.Next, try shooting

an object ball starting at Y. The problem now is that if you shoot slowly, the object ball will have time to acquire forward roll, and that roll will makethe ball curve long after it hits the cushion. You can fix this in two ways.First, you could pick a target closer to the original C position, which willcompensate for the long roll. That’s OK, but that’s not what we’re doing with this system. Instead, hitthe ball hard enough that it has no time to pick up follow from the cloth.Experiment to find out how hard that is on your table. If your cloth is fairlyold and a little sticky, you’ll need to whack the ball to keep the angle true. That’s the sort of speed you’ll see most of the bank pool players use inthe banks division of the Derby City Classic. Try a bunch of ball positionsand find what speed it takes to make the ball while shooting directly towardsthe D target.

With the summer months right around the corner, I thought we could alluse this courtesy reminder… Keep it cool.

Have you ever been in a match anddiscovered that your bodytemperature began risinguncontrollably? Did you notice yourhands getting clammy? Or, did youbegin sweating profusely? These donot sound like very attractivecharacteristics, but many of us arevictims to one or more of them. How do we prevent this fromhappening? How do we maintain thebasic 3 C’s (Calm, Cool, andCollected) during a match?Unfortunately, there is no keyingredient or magic pill to make thishappen. There are, however, someways to lower your body temperature

and help you keep your cool during your match.· Dress cool, and comfortably. If your body is sensitive to temperaturechanges, it may be time to do some shopping. Look for tournamentapparel that is loose-fitting and comfortable to play in. Keep your eye outfor fabrics that absorb moisture well. I don’t buy anything that I can’tshoot pool in. If you want to win, think “function over fashion.”· Wash your hands. Before or during your match, wash your handswith cool to cold water. Not only does it help lower your body temperature,it will help wake you up. Of course, make sure your hands are completelydry before playing.· Drink lots of water and make sure it’s available. Most largetournaments supply water for the players. Bring your own water bottleand refill it before matches. That way, you’ll always have it with you andyou won’t have to wonder if you’re drinking from the right cup. Drinkingcold water hydrates and replenishes the body better than soft drinks orbeer.· Don’t forget to breathe. Long, slow, deep breaths between shotshelp supply plenty of oxygen to the brain and slow down your heart rate.Find a solid breathing pattern for yourself and sustain it during your match. Also, make sure you breathe when you’re shooting. Don’t hold yourbreath.· Walking/strolling between matches. Keeping the circulation goingbetween matches is better than sitting around, waiting to see who yournext opponent is. It also helps to keep the muscles loose and relaxed.· Get a towel. Trust me, once you start keeping a towel with your case, you’ll find many uses for it. It helps keep your hands dry too.· Get help. If all else fails, you may want to consider using a glove orhand talc. Some people just have naturally clammy, moist hands andthere is nothing that will change it. If your clammy hands are affectingyour ability to create a smooth, stable bridge, it may be time forreinforcement.Notice what works for you. Everyone is different. What you do that dayor what you eat may also affect how your body reacts. Staying calm, cool and collected conditions your body to consistently perform at highlevels. So, the next time you begin feeling a bit warm and flush; don’t let thatfeeling consume you. Keep it cool while shooting pool. Please take a moment to visit my online store at www.SammsPocket.comwhere you will find fun and unique products for pool players.Looking for a special gift? See if I have it. If not, I may be able to help youfind it.

If the angle is too steep for the soft-hit option, you can try going off thepocket point, as shown at the bottom of this diagram. Making the 2-ballis, admittedly, a low-percentage shot, but the idea can be useful insafety play when balls block other options. At the top is a masse’ option to avoid scratching, which I’d never try in agame that meant anything. It’s included here for academiccompleteness.

The people of the circle known as the pool world lost a good friendrecently. He had so many friends and was loyal to a fault. Neal wasborn in Detroit, Michigan and wished to return there after his death twodays before his 61st birthday. He fought a long valiant fight against cancerand did as much traveling as his declining health allowed, . He particularlyenjoyed visiting old friends and one in particular in Australia. He alsowent to the Holy Land, England, China, Russia and made many trips toDetroit to visit friends and relatives. He particularly enjoyed going to majorpool tournaments where many of his buddies played. Upon his move to Portland, I believe in the mid-60’s, he went toAmato’s, where the pool and golf action was. No slouch at pool himself,he played golf at Amato’s, (since closed), Grand Central Bowl, (closedalso) and at Classic Billiards through the years until declining healthlimited his participation. He was one of the top players in the golf game.( which is played on 5x10 or 6X12 snooker tables)., and played with thesame class in which he lived his life. Neal was very generous and it wasa major accomplishment to pay a check when Neal was around. Neal enjoyed playing golf, (on the real grass of fairways, besides thegreen felt), riding his bicycle and visiting his family and friends. He hadan Abssynian cat named “Muchifer”, who stayed on his bed for up to 20hours at a time when Neal was at his son’s house after being sent homediagnosed as terminally ill. He dearly loved that cat. He adored his family, particularly his son, Danny, daughter-in-law, Amyand his granddaughter. His sister, Brenda traveled here from Detroitseveral times during Neals illness and accompanied his body to Detroitfor burial beside his Mother. We extend our sympathy to his family & wewill all miss one of the nicest, kindest loyal friends to come into our lives.Though your body has departed, Neal, we cherish the memories ofyour life and friendship.Lovingly, Jean & Frank Bartholomew One time at Grand Central Bowl during a tense golf game, Nealwould always be the one to add a little levity to the room, and be everself-effacing. He’d say, “You know, you can drive a truck for twoweeks and they call you a truck driver”.“I’ve been playing pool for forty years and they’ve never called me a poolplayer”. As remembered by Bob ZackAnother excerpt about Neal and playing golf, on a fairway, Dave Reavissaid “He might only hit the ball 50 yards, but was always just cheerfuland thankful to be outside enjoying the company of his friends”.He also rode his bicycle, often in the company of long-time friend, SandyWatson. They never needed to wait for the sun to shine to ride, coveringmany miles of southern Washington & all over the Portland areaoccasionally getting caught in some famous Oregon liquid sunshine. Itnever seemed to bother too much and they were always ready the nexttime. He is surely missed.

From The Work Bench

In digesting all the info at the B.C.A. tradeshow I thought you might like to share someof the technical questions that came up fromthe horses mouth, the manufacturesthemselves. Since I learned so much andshared so much with others, you may get

bored with all I have to tell. It might take a couple of articles to cover thewhole story. I would appreciate your comments and would love to hearfrom you either by phone or E mail. The contacts are listed below.People were amazed by the ease of installation of the Gold Crown styletable via China. The people stopping by the booth noticed the smoothnessof the cloth and Paddo’s ability to do the pockets without showing afastener. The general comment of the installers who stopped by wasdiscontent with the difficulty in putting on the worsted fabrics. The salesforce realizes the extra profits in selling the finer goods. The owner of thecompany sees the happy customer who has a pool table that plays welland the players are demanding the cloth in the rooms, taverns and privateclubs. My next article will be on the inside story of worsted wool and thechange they have made in the market place. There are so many benefits that the old woolen broad cloth has beenreplaced. Gorina and Simonis were on the cutting edge of this technologyand every one has been trying to catch up with them. There are not manymills in the world that can work with the type of yarn that it takes to producea fine surface like these two European giants. There are only two millsleft in the U.S. because the labor costs are so high in weaving it. I amamazed that both Simonis and Gorina can weave bolt after bolt with out aflaw. In the hundreds of bolts that I have used; today I got the first flaw justto find the exception to prove the rule. It was a single pulled thread butmarked so well both on the edge but in chalk where the bad thread was.Lucky me it was exactly where I needed to cut cushion cloth. I shouldhave knocked on wood when I told both Ivan Lee and Carlos that I hadnever found one. What you hate is to miss one that is not marked, put iton the table, put the rails on leave and have the customer call. You mightget the mill to stand behind the fabric but I have never known them toreimburse the labor. The cloth is so sturdy that it will out last three woolen because by itsnature it is stronger and tougher and is harder to get it to do the installerswill. I have been using worsteds since the late 1970’s so I have someexperience with it. I suppose I must have had a few choice words andfailures in the early days, but knew the benefits far out weigh the extrahassle. Carlos the owner of the worsted plant in Spain explained the reasonfor it’s strength starts with the sheep. The usual method of raising sheepis to drive them from pasture to pasture. Where the Morino sheep areraised in Australia they never need to move to greener pastures.Transportation on foot or hoof as the case may be takes energy andgrowing wool takes energy. These sheep grow longer and stronger wooland it than takes a lot of combing and spinning to get the thread just right.Between Carlos and Mark Simonis from the Belgium mill, I learned all theinside dope on the type of fabric I have preferred for almost thirty years.Lucky me I got to spend over one hour with one of the most attractive

women in the billiard industry, LedeenHangen president of R.C. Designs.Old gruff guys with broken andscared fingers and bent backs don’t often get a chance to talk shop withgood looking “chicks” like Ledeen or Felice and Chris Hayes from Simonis.Ledeen was nice enough to explain the problems that we manufacturesand installers have been having with the imported pockets. I have beenusing the Chinese pockets to get the natural dye but have had realproblems as I am sure other installers share. Pockets that are not thesame size they are not square and the holes are not at 90o to the surfaceor in the same place. R.C. Designs has spent the time and money tosolve the problems. In stead of the old sand molds they developed toGenesis pocket. It is injected into a mold that is 10X more expensive thanthe sand molds and the zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper Z8 pocketcastings are 2Xs more expensive that the old steel. They also do nothave the problem with the chemical reaction on the leather and the seemhas been moved from the ball impact spot that cut the iron cover on thecommercial table. The sum total of the benefits of the of the new styles ofpockets and shields, and the z8 casting will give an even smarter look tothe finished table and a much happier installer. Not many buyers found the need to make the trip to Houston. PaulSchorzman from Classic Billiards never misses a show. Hank a wellknown installer and the Prughs from Vancouver showed, Casey Leibold,Don and Rob from Golden West, but those from the swim and spa combowere in the peak of setting up for their other season couldn’t get away. They missed a great show. If you are a dealer, room owner, or installeryou should try to make the next show in Las Vegas.See you next month in the meanwhile give me a call 503 313 8646 or Email [email protected]

In the finals between defending 2005 San Diego Classic winner Kelly Fisher ranked 3rd in the WPBA and 2ndranked Karen Corr, it was a case of Deja-Vu. Initially Corr dominated with a 3-0 lead, however the tide turnedand it became all Fisher. With two nine ball breaks by Fisher and some rough misses and bad rolls by Corr,Viejas was a repeat performance for Fisher who won 7-4 in front of apacked crowd. The WPBA also celebrated its 10 year anniversarywith the Viejas Casino and awarded a plaque to the Viejas Band ofKumeyaay Indians in appreciation for their wonderful support all theseyears.1st $13,000 Kelly Fisher2nd $8,000 Karen Corr3rd $5,300 Allison Fisher, Sarah Ellerby5th $3,000 Dawn Hopkins, Jeanette Lee,

Domenic’sDomenic’sDomenic’sDomenic’sDomenic’s: : : : : More Than PoolMore Than PoolMore Than PoolMore Than PoolMore Than PoolBy: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

Milwaukie’s newest Bar and Grill is Domenic’s.Totally remodeled from its former self, known

as Buddy’s on Southeast McLaughlin, 1/2 blocksouth of G.I. Joes. Mr. B, the new owner hasopened up the space, let the sunshine filter inthrough the many windows, completelyremodeled the bathrooms, and gave the entireplace an open airy feel along with a privatepoolroom with six brandnew valley tables.I first entered Domenic’swhen I delivered “TheBreak” the beginning of April.I was immediately struck bywhat a warm, inviting, comfortable place it was.More and more people arediscovering what a greatplace Domenic’s is to be aswell. Mr. B remarked, “Weget new faces everyday. We’re a multi-use venue. We have live musicon Fridays and Saturdays. We have a DJ onThursdays and we’re going to start having a DJon Wednesday night as well. We have sportsviewing, shuffleboard, Oregon lottery, videogames, Nascar viewing and karaoke. Peoplecome here for a variety of different reasons.”The great menu is one of those reasons. Witha wide selection of sandwiches on the menu,

their Bacon Tillamook Cheddar Cheese Burgeris the best! Italian sausage with grilled peppers,

incredible Halibut, Chickenbreast, Caesar salad,Amatrician-Penne, Putanesaand Venettiziana have allreceived high compliments fromthe many hungry customers thatcome for the excellent food. Thequality and consistency of thefood served there is what bringsthe customers back for more.Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner areserved all day. Mr. B mentioned,“You can come in 15 minutesbefore we close and get anomelet.”

Mr. B has paid attention to detail and is constantlystriving to make Domenic’s better and moreenjoyable for his customers. He has paidparticular attention to the live bands that playthere. “I need to physically go out and see bandsat other venues because we want to maintain a

certain level ofquality. We’ve hadsome very goodbands in here andwe need to beknown as a placethat hasconsistently goodmusic all the time.Norman Sylvesterplayed here.Norman has beenan icon in this

town for decades and he packed the place. Westill have people calling back to see when hewill be playing again. It’s that level of quality thatwe want to maintain on a weekly basis.”Not only are the live bands awesome but youcan enjoy playing shuffleboard on two full lengthtables, which are hard to find. There are brandnew flat screen TV’s for the sports enthusiasts.NFL Ticket was very popular, two dart boards,

video games, and of course 7 POOL TABLES.“The room is very spacious. We havecomfortable booth seating, lounge seating withchairs on casters that swivel and rock. We havean extensive elevated seating area with barstools. Our separate poolroom has 6 pool tablesin it with an internet jukebox. What’s nice aboutthis space is that when we have live music orkaraoke in the big room, people can go in thepoolroom and still play the jukebox,” Mr. B proudlysaid. Domenic’s holds a weekly pool tournamentevery Tuesday night. Sign-ups start at 7:00 pm,$5 entry + $3 green fee, 8-Ball, BCA rules, thehouse matches the pot. Many of the area’s bestpool players have shown up for the tournamentsincluding Glenn Atwell. So, stop in and shoot alittle pool next Tuesday night.

Domenic’s is also looking for pool league teams.Right now they have a couple of APA teamscommitted to playing out of there but they stillhave room for more teams on Monday, Tuesdayor Wednesday nights. It is easy to see that Mr. B has put a lot of thoughtand effort into making Domenic’s THE place tobe. When I asked him what new and excitingplans he had he said, “We’re going to build adeck and have an outside seating area. This willbe a great place to have a cocktail, smoke, ormake a phone call. It’s just a little added featurethat sets us apart.”“In May we’re going to have a Karaoke Contest.A five week event, with cash prizes. You can

Profile of a Champion: The Glenn Atwell Story

Kiersten and Glenn Atwell

By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

I had a chance to talk to Glenn acouple of weeks ago about his life, family and his game. I caught upwith him at Classic BilliardsinPortland, OR where he wasspending a little quality time with hisdaughter Kiersten Atwell.Although Glenn was not born andraised in the Pacific Northwest, hehas lived in the Portland/Vancouverarea for 20+ years. Detroit,Michigan was home but he leftthere in the early 80’s and wasCalifornia bound. While inCalifornia, a lady who designedclothes was going to Alaska toopen a store and offered Glenn a

job - so North to Alaska hewent. The job fell through but

Glenn stayed and played pooland did very well after meeting

some casino people. Healso met a lady, KimSuzuki, with whom hebecame very close andthey eventually movedto Portland, Oregon. This was home for Kim,

and Glenn was here tostay too.

Glenn has amassed quitea number of impressive wins

over the years. He’s participated inRegional League Championshipsas well as professionaltournaments. Glenn says, “Amongmy most cherished wins are titlesfrom the Western BCA MastersDivisions, Reno Open 8-BallSingles, Sewickley Open, WorldOpen Team Tournament (VNEA),State Championships and I was theoverall winner on the PechauerWest Coast Tour.”When I asked Glenn what was hismost memorable win, heresponded, “When I won the ’94National Championship. It wasbilled as the Amateur NorthAmerican Open, held at theFlamingo Hilton in Reno. JeremyJones and I were in the finals. It wasmy first big win.”For every memorable win there isusually a loss or two that stand out

in your memory. Glenn is noexception and he related thisincident, “I did real good one timeat the Reno Open. I was playingNick Varner and I had him buried. But it ended up going hill-hill and Ihad a chance to win and I kind offainted. But I did the same thing inthe same tournament with JohnnyArcher and just recently in Oroville.I had Archer buried again and lethim come back and he ended upwinning.”Every great pool player has winsand losses buttrue championslearn from both. When I askedGlenn what atypical day for himwas he said,“Scuffling. It’salmost like beingsel f -employed.Everyday youhave to creates o m e t h i n g ,everyday is awhole differentchallenge. I like topractice. WhenI’m practicing Ispend at least 4hours a day. I hadthe pleasure ofw a t c h i n g“Champagne” EdKelly, one day inVegas and hereally impressedme. He was justwarming up, playing one pocket, this was in the early 80’s. I startedasking people about him and he hada chart of the way he practiced. One day it would be kicking andbanking, another day it’d be strokeshots, another day it’d be his break.I try to break it down in logicalpractice formats, ones that helpyou do a little something different. That’s what he did and I like thatstyle of practice.”The use and non-use of JumpSticks in tournament play hassparked a lot of controversy so Iasked Glenn to weigh in on thetopic. “I just go by the rules. Yearsago I used to watch David Howard

and Earl Stickland when they wereyoung in Ohio. Earl impressed meso much by jumping with a full-length cue that I learned the shot. Ittakes a lot of stretching to be ableto do it correctly. A jump cue iseasier but if you want to learn theshot it will help jumping with a full-length cue. It’ll help your wholegame because it’s a stroke builder.”Glenn’s own jump cue is a Lucasibut he told me of a specialty jumpcue made by a gentleman inMinnesota, “It’s called the Fly &

Eagle, I think his name is DaleChilton. Allison Fisher bought oneof his jump cues. With his cue youcan jump a ball 1/16 of an inch away. It’s unbelievable! Some people cando it with a dollar bill in between theballs. It goes straight up into the airand over. It is especially lightweightand it doesn’t take off on the bounce. It just sits there. This cue weighsprobably around 3 ounces.”Beside his jump cue, Glenn shootswith a custom cue made by RogerPettis from West Seattle, andcarries his cues in a “knock-off” InStroke case. The case is not leatherand is extremely light for a 4 x 8 -

Trevor Smith

By Hardtimes Billiards Tournament Director Tom Suarez

Springtime has arrived in Sacramento. Rain, Sunshine, more rain, cloudsand more rain. We’ve had a wet and cloudy Spring and that’s a bad thingfor being outside but it also brings players inside to enjoy the pocketbilliard tables. Our First of the Month One Pocket and 9-Ball events were full of NorthernCalifornia’s best players that were up for the challenge.Trevor Smith of Sacramento had a great Saturday full of One Pocketmatch wins. Mr. Smith took wins over Craig Herman, Baby Frank, BobbyHunter (Carson City NV), Melvin (Bar Area CA) and winning the Hot Seatmatch over local Sacramento player Robert Aldana.Robert Aldana got to the Hot Seat match by besting Sarge, Carl Jr (CarsonCity NV) Ron Lilly and Roger Estelle (Vacaville CA). But as fate wouldhave it, Robert lost to Joey Gebron in the finals of the one-loss side. Joeytook the long road to the Finals, losing his first match to Roger Estelle, won 8 straight matches to make it to the finals against Trevor. In the finals, it was all Trevor Smith to take the first place finish and $300prize.The 9-Ball event was won by Sonoma County resident Lance Salazar.Lance took the Hot Seat match from Trevor Smith in a tough fought Hill-Hill battle. Mr. Salazar won matches over Dan Russo, James Williams(7/8), Jim Fabionar (2nd) Gilbert Arellano (5th/6th) and Trevor Smith (3rd)

The finals were true double elimination. Jim Fabionar and Lance Salazartook the match to the limits. Jim getting his chance to play for 1st place bywinning tough matches over DonMcLeod, Dave Rodden, theylosing to Lance and going to theleft side and winning matches overJosh Palmer (7th/8th) RobertAldana (5th/6th) Roger Estelle (4th)and for the finals of the One Lossside a close match over 3rd placefinisher Trevor Smith.Jim Fabionar won the first 3games of the first set of the truedouble elimination. Lance tookadvantage of Jim’s ‘dry’ break onthe 4th game to string 3 gamestogether and tie the match at 3-3.The finals always seem to bringout the ‘drama’ of the tournamentand this was no exception. At Hill-Hill, Lance went for the tough 6 ballto put the match away andmissed. Jim took advantage and won the first set. The second set was adifferent story, Mr. Salazar got to the hill before Mr. Fabionar won his firstgame and the match was over on the next game. Lance seems to alwaysdo well at Hardtimes.

by: Pat SheehanIt’s now overand official. The BackStage pool andspirits is nowopen. I know itas BagD a d d y ’ sbilliards, butmy first choiceof namescaught MikeMcMenaminsfancy so Iguess BackStage Billiardswill have to do.

Pacific Crest did another great job of making the impossible happen ontime, and on St Patrick’s day 2006, my birthday, the doors swung openand the party was on.Pacific Crest and all of the rest of us who put in all the long hours tomake it happen have Mike and Brian’s capitol rule first in Mind (the finishedproduct must be Fun). Getting things to turn out that way isn’t always funbut a lot of work. When I first saw it the space was the general storehousefor all of the collection items waiting for a place to go or left over from thelast project. We began to bring the pool tables in pieces for the billiard room. Noproblem on the first one, but we couldn’t fit the second inside, so it wentinto the future bathroom. No room for the third table; it went into myalready overfilled shop. The next time the back bar was in place and allthe rest of the pool tables went to our new shop to be restored. I wentback with Brian to lay out the tables so the lights could be placed. I thenbegan to realize just how tough everyone’s job was going to be. Thelights had to be hung overhead some 70 feet up. The bar was missingone end and the plans were out the window/but this Back stage area leftover from the Vaudeville days was about to take a brand new look andtwo months later it is spectacular. The area itself is spectacular because of the neck bending effect of thevaulted ceiling which at seven stories the highest on the East side ofPortland. As you stand at the entrance your eye catches the 20ft x 20ftcanvas on thefar wall. It waspainted byOlivia Behm,Kolieha Bush,Joe Cotter, LyleHehn, MyrnaYoder, and myfavorite artistJennifer Joyceand directs yourview upwardstoward theC h a n d e l i e r ssaved from the1920’s OregonBank that havebeen savedfrom the twenties, and tilts your head to the dizzying heights where theconstellation of colored lights seven stories above. As you walk down the ramp to enter the room your eye catches the Neonsigns hanging two stories up and you get the feeling of walking down analley between two seven story buildings. You now can appreciate thepool tables from the twenties restored two factory condition. Now youreye can dwell on the back bar from the Oly Club in Centralia. Built at theturn of the century Honduras mahogany with heavy inlay was the styleand the bar and back bar are an example. Ribbon grained mahoganyaccented with ebony, lemon wood, Zebrono, maple and mother of pearl. We found two Madisons, and a 5x10 Regent that fit the style that the barset and built two brand new Sheehan Madison tables to match. As you stand at the bar to order a drink and check out the balls to try thetables, you get chance to admire the original canvas of the Taj Mahal thatwas a backdrop for the Vaudeville stage. Grab the balls and head to thetables. Every one plays as well as any one you ever tried. They wereselected for the appearance but were engineered for performance. Poolhas become more and more important to the McMenamins style ofproviding fun, spirits and food. The tables have the ability to keep theguests there to enjoy the second and third parts of the formula. Mike andBrian have provided the food and spirits and it is our job to see to it thatthe tables live up to expectations. The Bagdad now provides the perfectspot for an afternoon or evening of entertainment. Linda Carter

NWPA KICKS OFF 2006 SEASONby: Chris Rogers, Tournament Director

On March 18-19, the Northwest Women’s Pool Association heldits first tour stop for 2006 at the Parlor Billiards and Spirits in Bellevue,WA. Keeping with its goal to be the top pool room on the West Coast, the Parlor, in addition to adding$750.00 cash, also purchased notone (1), but two (2) Qualifying spotsto the Women’s Pro Tour. One forthe BCA Championships in Las Vegasand one for the San Diego Classic. This news had spread across thecountry bringing players from not justthe Northwest, but places like Calgary,Edmonton and even Florida.

The news from the playersmeeting, while mostly tedious, wasthat Julie has us now in the 21st

Century as player packets will nowbe CD form. No more trees have to sacrifice themselves. Also, in aneffort to get more part time or new players, there is a simple $10.00additional charge for anyone to play as a non-member. This has beenlowered from recent years of $20.00. But the big news was our fullschedule of seven events. Five of which are WPBA Qualifiers. Pleasevisit our websit: www.nwpatour.com for more info or Billiard Paper forschedule.

The tournament itself, which started at 10am Saturday morning, had a deep field of 46 players and it would take till late evening just tobring the field down to the 16 players who would battle it out on Sunday. On the A side, Martha Hartsell defeated Liz Cole 7-5 and Cathy Metzingergot Kim Jones 7-4. In the point match it was back and forth to 4-4 beforeCathy won 3 in a row to take it. On the B side, Kim then played MonaRemedios from Edmonton with Mona winning 7-3. Conversely, LindaCarter, who having lost to Kerry Impson early Saturday, had to fight throughthe B side, starting at 9am Sunday. Linda started off 7-0 against MaryEllen Homenchuk from Surrey, BC, then got Ellen Van Buren from Floridain what may have been the match of the day, 7-6. Mary Hopkin then fell7-3 and Liz Cole fell 7-4. Mona and Linda now played and Carter wasnow on a roll winning 7-3 and then getting Martha 7-2 for the B side point.

Cathy had waited hours to play while Linda was in stroke and itshowed with Linda in front early at 4-2 in a final race to 9. They tradedgames the rest of the way with each player holding break and the earlylead paid off with Linda’s 9-6 victory. She pulled off the biggest andlongest Sunday comeback in NWPA history, congrats Linda.

You have to be careful if there is any cut angleor you use any side spin on the cue ball. Eitherone of these will put some corresponding sidespin on the object ball. With the target in place, try some cuts and side spin and see how muchthat affects the shot. For example, if you shot Xwith right english on the cue ball, the object ballwould have left english and would tend to go“long” and hit on the short rail. The two balls byZ have a problem with the side pocket for thissystem. Can you get them to bank by usingspeed or spin to cheat the system? You can also set up a target for the side pocket,

which should be at the same distance from thetable and directly in line with the side pockets.Long banks should work similarly, but the shotsthemselves are much harder since they aretwice as long. When using the system in play, your opponentwill probably not let you use a barstool like this. You can measure off the right distance with yourcue stick, but mostly you have to develop a feelfor where the target is. The point of having avisible target on the barstool is so that you candevelop that feel and familiarity more quickly.

that is the reason Glenn carries it. “Leathercases are too heavy.”Physical conditioning and playing despite variousailments that can interfere with your game issomething that some pool players have tocontend with and Glenn is no stranger to dealingwith pain. We talked about some of the obstacleshe has had to overcome. “I have a condition inmy spine that’s not real good. It’s the oppositeof scoliosis called ‘Sherman’s’. In scoliosis yourspine is shaped in an ‘S’ but with Sherman’s itgoes like a ‘backwards S’. I’m always fightingthat, going to chiropractors and trying to exerciseto be able to hit a lot of balls. I’m also thinkingabout eye surgery. I’ve tried wearing glasses butthey are very awkward and you have to twistyour neck around too much and I don’t like that. The biggest problem I see with glasses is thatonce you get into a match, a few minutes lateryou start to perspire a little bit and your glassesmove around. I hate that part. I always have tofiddle with them.”Glenn also teaches pool, so I asked him if hehad ever been beaten in a tournament by one ofhis students. “Yes, Scott Barnard comes tomind. There were a couple of kids I taught along time ago that got to be really good and forone reason or another they had to get out ofpool. They went to work. Scott went into truckingand he got out of it. I taught him for about sixmonths and then worked with him for a fewmonths more. Then he went out on his own andlearned more and more and got to be a real fine

player. There was another young guy out inBoring, Oregon. His name was Mike Durr andboy did he get good and he had to quit. His familywas in the construction business, so afterfinishing college he was working in the familybusiness. When he was playing he startedbeating all the ‘A’ players – just running so manyracks, they quit on him.”Glenn is currently teaching at Classic Billiardsin Portland, Oregon and has a few students atthe Cadillac Island Casino in Longview,Washington. Glenn is teaching some studentsthat are showing promise and he hopes theirgames will greatly improve in the future. In closing Glenn remarked how fascinated hewas by the Filipino philosophy of instructing poolplayers. Rumor has it that the players fromTaiwan hired the Filipinos to teach them. TheFilipino players matched up with the Taiwanplayers, the more experienced players teachingthe talented younger players. This can been seenby looking at Alex Pagulayan, a very talentedyoung player, who was taught by Jose Parica.Glenn remarked, “They are doing a fine job inteaching.”Glenn’s next challenges will be at the ACSRegional Championships in Canyonville,Oregon; BCA Nationals in Las Vegas, both inMay. Glenn finished the interview by saying thathe needed to get his shoulder healed first.I would like to thank you my friend for taking thetime for the interview and hope you shootstraight in all your future tournaments.

come in on a Wednesday or a Thursday during the first four weeks, give it your best shot and ifyou are one of the top three for that evening, then you’ll be invited back on the fifth week for thechampionship. The judging is going to be done by the staff and the DJ. Judging is based on overallperformance and crowd appeal. We’re also going to have a category for the worst performance.People who are nervous or afraid of performing can still compete for the worst category. For eachnight of the first four weeks there will be prizes for the top three – things like T-shirts, hats andother giveaway items. For the grand prize in the championship round we’ll do $100 to the winnerand $50 to each of the runner-ups. Categories are best performance, worst performance and wemay even have a third category for the most humorous performance. We think it’ll be fun and wewant to pack this place. So bring you friends to cheer for you because crowd response is one ofthe things you’ll be rated on. COME ON DOWN AND LET YOUR HAIR DOWN.”Domenic’s is located at 16065 SE McLoughlin Blvd in Milwaukie, just a ½ block south of GI Joe’s.
