him get up the road for the next 5 or 10 minutes. In my quest for serenity, Iwent over to the creek and watched a beaver rebuild his dam. Before Iknew it 30 minutes had passed and I knew I had to get back on the road, leaving was harder than I would have anticipated. As I pulled off I decidedto take in what was around me. This is after all the “Big Sky Country”.Snow capped mountains, hay fields, tree lined rolling hills with snow onthe north side where the sun doesn’t hit until late afternoon, to going pastTwo Dot, a small town made famous in a song by Hank Williams, Jr. Mostof us drove hundreds of miles to get to the state championship. I hope allof you had the same opportunity as I did.The tournament started Saturday, numbers were down about 10% fromthe previous year. This is the 3rd year that it was held in Lewistown, nextyear it will be in West Yellowstone, the west entrance to Yellowstone NationalPark. It was great to see all the people I haven’t seen all year long and thetournament ran smoothly. And for those of us who left their game at home, like myself, we were treated on Sunday to some spectacular pool. JeffBoucher in the Men’s A, pretty much had his way at the table for the win.Women’s A went down to a battle between Sky Tigart from Great Falls andLinda Asleson from Billings. It proved to be a seesaw battle through bothsets with Linda coming out victorious. Men’s B, Jeff Grinwis, a late entryinto the tournament, walked pretty much through the tournament until heplayed Travis Hopstad. It went to a double set and more than just a couplemissed 8-Balls in the side cost Travis the championship. Women’s Bbetween Shellie Mitchell from East Helena and Aimee Neel of Bozemanalso went to a double set. Shellie came back to tie it at hill-hill in the finalgame. She ran down to the 8, had a long difficult cut, missed it. Aimee wasforced to play safeties the next couple of shots. Shellie was able to makethe 8 and win the championship.Congratulations to all the champions and all the players for making thistournament what it is today. A special thank you to the MCMOA and its staffand hope to see everybody in West Yellowstone next year.

FEDERAL WAY, WAOn April 3rd and 4th, PJPockets Casino held thefirst of what we all hope willbe many weekendtournaments. The gamewas 8-ball and the formatwas a race to three until themoney rounds, and then itwas a race to five for thecash. Due to timeconstraints, the field washeld to 32 players. With a$1,000.00 added, the fieldfilled up quickly, with only afew players being turnedaway. Hopefully with ournext tournament comingup on June 5th and 6th,players won’t wait until thelast minute to sign up. The field was varied in skill and experience andcontained several local “big guns”. All in all, the tournament was deemeda success and hopefully with a couple of small changes will go even moresmoothly next time. of Leagues and Player Programs.D”C”A: Good Morning John.JL: Good Morning Don.D”C”A: I’ve seen two differentinitials for the Alliance, what is theofficial one?JL: American CueSports Alliance,CueSports that’s one work with theS in sports being capitalized makingit ACS and Alliance is silent.D”C”A: What are the plans for theleagues and when will they start?JL: Everything starts on June 1st

when your fiscal offices start up. Inthe meantime, myself and BettyHarris, who was my main assistantfrom BCA, are working to puteverything inline with thecooperation and guidance of ourboard of directors. There was aformation meeting in the Chicago,Illinois area March 27th and 28th bymany of the larger leagues in theBCA system and some of the moreinfluential state associations werepresent. I was not at that meeting;Betty was not at that meeting. Wewere offered positions after that.D”C”A: I had also read that theBCA had given up on the Olympics. Is the ACS going to pursue that?JL: Absolutely. In fact we’re the onlygroup that can pursue it. It will takea few years to get affiliation with theUnited States Olympic Committee. The United States OlympicCommittee wants to see a trackrecord of any organization applyingto it. However, I spent time, a weekand a half ago with the ex-presidentof the United States OlympicCommittee. He’s praised ourefforts, he has a pretty good ideawhat’s going on in the cuesportsindustry.D”C”A: Good, I like seeing that andI want to see that advance as well.It was a shame that the BCA gaveup on it and went another direction.JL: Here’s the BCA’s take on thisfrom my understanding. A little overa year ago the BCA board made adecision to spin the league playersprogram off to an all non-profitassociation that could still apply tothe United States OlympicCommittee. By doing that, thatwould allow the board of directors, which is all trade association peoplenow, to become strictly a tradeassociation. I think they had decidedthat the leagues and player issueswere too distracting to the focus thatthey wanted to have. And when theymade the decision, I thought it wasa very wise decision and I still feelthat way. However, somebodyexplained to this board of directorsthe next few months or at the nextboard meeting, just about ninemonths ago, trying to get into theOlympics would possibly neverhappen in our lifetime, and not surethat this situation would ever go. Soif we’re going to spin these leagueplayer programs off why don’t wesell them and make some money. Now, what a lot of people don’tunderstand is Steve Ducoff, theExecutive Director of the BCA, whoserved on the United StatesOlympic Committee board before,

tried to explain to the board over theyears, is that applying to the UnitedStates Olympic Committee is notnecessarily about getting in theOlympics. It is an extremely smallstep. There’s 200 national OlympicCommittees out there from 200different countries around the worldand each cuesport federation that’sin existence in those countries isattempting to apply to their ownnational Olympic committees andthe more you have on board, thebetter face you can give to applyingto the International OlympicCommittee. The United StatesOlympic Committee has very littleto do with getting in the Olympicsbut that still doesn’t mean that it’snot a big thing. What happens isthere are about four different strongbenefits to affiliating with the UnitedStates Olympic Committee. First isyou’re able to be in the position tobecome a Pan-American sport.Once the ACS becomes a Pan-American level member to theUnited States Olympic Committee,(we have a very close relationshipwith our South Americanconfederation in the World BilliardAssociation) they have some verystrong Olympic contacts downthere. Now it’s only a short matterof time to become a Pan-Americansport. Once you become a Pan-American sport you get subsidymoney from the United StatesOlympic Committee, a fairlysizeable amount, which can beused towards things like, instructorprograms, junior programs andreferee programs. Programs thathelp develop your sport to a higherlevel. The athletes can come in at ahigher level. That’s two of the bigissues right there. The BCA board in my opinion, innaivety never even considered to beimportant. They were only lookingat the long term getting theOlympics and just figured that thatwasn’t going to happen. There area couple of other issues, once we’reat that Pan-American level, we’rebonded with these other sports thathave had recognition with the UnitedStates Olympic Committee. Youdon’t have to go through all thishassle of , “Are you even a sport –or not a sport”, that debate is outthe door at that point. And wedevelop a bond with other crediblesports out there in the public eye. Amajor fallout of that will be that weare possibly able to get corporatesponsorship from sponsors that areinterested in sports that are tied inwith the United States OlympicCommittee. Those are the types ofcorporate sponsors that right nowin the history of our sport in thiscountry, that we can’t even touch. When you get in with the UnitedStates Olympic Committee, youstart being able to open doors tothese types of corporations. Again,Steve Ducoff, tried to explain that tothe board but the board, in myopinion, never really saw theadvantages of that. They just keptthinking in the short term, “either we

This months Artistic Shot is from the Masse Discipline and has a Degreeof Difficulty (DOD) of 8. This skillful Masse is from the movie the Hustler.

Here is apiece of trivia. This shotwas also inthe musicvideo Bad ToThe Bone.W i l l i eM o s c o n ip e r f o r m e dthe shot foreach one. Object ball A(at left) isapproximately1/8 inch fromthe cue ballor can befroze to thecue ball. A ball(at right) is 2balls widthaway fromthe slate cutof pocket Aand 1/2 inchoff of thecushion. Theobject of thisshot is toshoot the cueball with av e r t i c a lMasse into Aball (at left)and towardthe cushion of

A ball (at right). After stroking the cue ball you will pocket A ball (at left) firstand the cue ball will go up table as diagrammed and come back to pocketA ball (at right). Here are a couple of special notes: The cue ball doesn’t have to contactthe cushion above A ball at right and a scratch is allowed. Here are acouple of helpful hints on executing this great shot. The elevation of yourcue should be approximately 80 to 85 degrees. While standing behind thecue ball and aiming the cue ball to pocket B you would be cueing the cueball at about a 7 o’clock position on the cue ball while looking down on thecue ball. Don’t try this shot with a hard tip, use a medium or soft tip. Thisshot can be made with a regular cue or a Masse cue. If you want to try this shot in your billiard room or sports bar getpermission from the owner before you attempt it. If not you may be payingthem to recover their table.Next months Artistic Shot is from the Trick or Fancy Discipline and has aDOD of 8.

Half-Ball Follow SecretsBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

May 2004www.onthebr eaknews.comPage 8

In my last two columns,I covered aiming half-ballshots and the path of thecue ball when playing ahalf-ball shot with draw. This month, the subjectis follow.Shot 1 is a practice shotthat will help you getexperience with the “half-ball angle,” which refersto the angle the cue balltakes off an object ballwhen the cue ball isrolling smoothly on thetable and hits half of theobject ball. A ball is rolling

smoothly when it has neither draw nor stop norexcess follow, but is rolling just like your tiresusually do on the highway. The practice shotwill seem strange on paper, but I think you’ll reallybe amazed by it on the table. The cue ball is placed a few inches to the right ofthe head spot, and the object ball is on the footspot. The goal is to make the cue ball after hittinghalf of the object ball on the left side. (There is agame played like this, in which you cue the objectballs to send them into pockets after hitting thecue ball — you might call it “scratch pool” — andyou may as well use object balls as your cueball for this drill.)Shoot the shot will a little follow, and not muchmore speed than enough to get the cue ball tothe pocket. If you hit half the ball on the foot spotas required, it will bank back close to a headpocket, and it should have just enough speed to

the head rail. The amazing thing about this shot is that youcan scratch 20 times in a row with ease, whileyou might have trouble making the object ball50% of the time. The angle of the cue ball isnearly constant for a fairly wide variety of cut

angles, and it will likely scratch even for cuts from15 to 45 degrees. Hint: if you have the speedand cut angle right, and the ball is still notscratching, adjust your starting point slightly. Ifyou have a heavy cue ball, the “sweet spot” mightbe a couple of inches farther from the center ofthe table. You can judge the position by notingwhere your stick passes over the rail, or markthe table.Once you get a feel for the angle, and have madethe scratch ten times in a row, try turning thestick around and shooting with the rubber bumper— you’ll need an open bridge. Some foolishpeople have been known to bet that you can’tscratch like this. While the shot in the diagram is not immediatelyuseful, the cue ball angle that it teaches is. Thereare lots of shots that are between 15 and 45degrees of cut, and if you shoot at a speed thatlets the cue ball roll smoothly on the cloth, thecue ball will come off the object ball at that half-ball follow angle. If you’ve done the practiceabove, the angle will be burnt into your retina, and you’ll know the cue ball’s exact future path.It is perhaps the most important fact to know forposition play after the “tangent line” principle thatsays the cue ball and object ball paths initiallydiverge at right angles.Note that the path of the cue starts outperpendicular to the path of the object ball, andthen curves forward from the follow. On a softshot, the curved part is often unnoticed, but afterten minutes of practice, you’ll start to see thepath on the cloth. The shot is also very useful for safety play. In

get the Olympics or we don’t get the Olympics. That to me was very short-sighted, they think this is the point of this whole thing. They used that asone of their reasons, one of their justifications for spinning off the leaguesystem.D”C”A: You mentioned about the youth pool and of that I’m a strongsupporter. I support it in “The Break” as well. My concern is and correct meif I’m wrong, the BCA held on to that end of it.JL: CorrectD”C”A: As parents, as pool players and those of us that support the juniorpool, whether it’s billiard suppliers, pool rooms or wherever it may be, whyshould we trust the BCA that they are not going to bail out on the playersthere?JL: I don’t think the BCA will. I think the BCA Trade Association has theresources to support that program to a greater extent than anyone elsedoes and that’s why we want to support the change of program under theBCA Trade Association, at least for the short term. I think Carrie Benson isdoing a very good job with that program. They get direction from thePresident of the Billiard Education Foundation, Tom Riccobene, who islooking strictly towards the future of the junior players and how this programcan expand to more educational programs in the school systems aroundthe country. We feel that that program is headed in a very strong directionand the ACS would not want to do anything but support the BCA TradeAssociation.D”C”A: I agree with the support of the junior pool, but a year ago youprobably wouldn’t have thought that they would have sold the leagues offeither.JL: You’ve got a point. I understand your concerns there and maybe that’sjust going to be the general publics concern. The ACS will not let anythinghappen to the junior program through the BCA. We’ll do our own programif necessary and we do want to have junior programs in the long run butwhatever we do we do not want to undermine the BCA program. We feelthey are headed in the right direction. We certainly don’t want to bring thejunior players into the politics or anything like that. We want to do exactlywhat’s right for the future of our sport and that includes the juniors. TheACS is going to be very sensitive about this but we have a very goodrelationship with Carrie Benson, of the BCA. We will be very supportive ofthe BCA Trade Association as far as the junior programs go.D”C”A: The BCA has been relatively silent, if not at all mute on decisionsthat they have made, whether it’s informing the league operators or aboutthe balloting for the Hall of Fame. I have read a lot of emails that I’ve received,as well as online about why the BCA doesn’t make things public. The votingon the Hall of Fame, who got how many votes, is a curiosity. Do you knowwhy the BCA didn’t release that information? Will the ACS be doing thesame type of thing or are you going to release to the players the voting onwhat decisions are made?JL: Being a more player oriented organization, it’s our responsibility tomake our membership (composed of players, league operators and leagueplayers) aware of what their board of directors, that they elected, is up to.The BCA Hall of Fame, I think it gets more criticism than it deserves. Therereally isn’t any hush hush stuff going on. They have a nomination committee,a Hall of Fame committee, made up of knowledgeable people. I think theycome up with good nominees. There is an election process. There areballots that go out in a very proper manner and some people would question,“Yeah, but they go out to the mainly industry people to vote on it”, and that’sthe only thing that some people would have a problem with.D”C”A: They don’t release the numbers off of it either.JL: It’s not proper to state that one player go so many votes, and anotherplayer got so many votes. I don’t believe that’s the proper thing to do.D”C”A: They do in other sports, you see it on ESPN all the time.JL: I’m not going to defend the BCA here, but my own take from beinginside the BCA is that the BCA does things in a proper manner as far as theHall of Fame goes. However, I would like to explain that when the Board of Directors ninemonths ago made the decision to hire a broker to sell the league playerprograms, that was an astonishing thing to me. I really was aghast. Firstoff, the Board of Directors did not ask me to address them on their decision.Being the league players program director I would’ve expected them totake all things into consideration before making their decision. It’s only properto hear the opinions of their directors who they’ve hired to oversee thatprogram. Yet, I think there were some people on the board, that just felt thatI would interfere with what they wanted to have happen. So once thedecision was made we were given directions as the BCA staff not to tellanyone about the board’s decision. This was supposed to be hush-hush,as long as the BCA could keep it hush-hush. They were worried the leagueswould find out about it. It could cause controversy and they didn’t want tosee any of that happen. Surprisingly, this is something that nobody hasprinted or published, our staff was honoring that. A week after the board’sdecision to hire a broker, last September, they had an annual refereescommittee meeting in Colorado Springs and the Executive Directorannounced at that meeting, to the referees present, that the league programwas for sale and that a broker had been hired.

On The Road Again

When I was ten years old, Dad decided it wastime to start working to earn my daily bread. When I was first starting, I was more troublethan value but by the time I was fifteen it wasfull time when I wasn’t in school. As soon asI got my driving permit we no longer went jobto job by bus. Dad wouldn’t drive from oldproblems when he drove for Bugs Moran. We

traveled from Vancouver BC to Redding California, the coast into Idahoand I couldn’t wait for the next trip. After ten years I got tired of the longtrips. The twenty-four hour days on my feet and the retail store wasdemanding more and more of my time but now, 56 years later I am backon the road again. The “From The Work Bench” has pulled up jobs from all over, from Ashland,Oregon to Ocean Shores, Washington. As I write this story, my right handman Aaron Curte is behind the wheel and I am writing as we head to Centraliato get the tables at McMenamin’s “Oly Club”. The Club is sponsoring amajor tournament and we needed to make the seven old Brunswick Monroetables play somewhat alike. When we started working on the tables a yearago, we found there were no two rails the same length or width. After 86years of mistake after mistake we had to start from scratch. The factoryhad goofed on the length of the rails. The tables were made in 1918 so wecan’t go back on warranty. The end rails on all the tables were at least ¼”short. The side rails were all different lengths and since they were wrongthe caps were broken. The setting strips were replaced with Fir and alldifferent widths and were done in pieces. To top it off they used K66 stylerubber and Brunswick always used K55 profile or Super Speed. See thediagram below for correct sizes on tables with #6 pockets.

The strange thing was I picked up another Monroe table to restore withbroken rail caps, sure enough the end rails were ¼” short, side rails 1/8”short. The guy at the factory either had a bad ruler or was on the sauce. The bolt holes I never could figure out. You would think that the factorywould have had a template to lay out the slate and rails to match, but therewas always up to 3/8” plus or minus on each rail, so we made the railswith slots for the bolts. Surprise! The holes in the slate were also at differentheights.Well, here I am finishing the article while the practice games are going on.I am rooting for Aaron Curte another Man of the Cloth. So far only a fewquestions from the players. A few pockets that spit the balls out and themagic cue balls that draw so well. Sarge noticed that the object balls were15%-20% too small and the cue balls were smaller than 2 1/8” diameter. We brought new balls that will be put out for the tournament. In a futurearticle we will talk about what happens to the balls.

SPOKANE, WA –On the weekend of March 13th and 14th McQ’s Billiardsheld it’s annual Johnnie Braswell Memorial 30 mile radius9-ball tournament. John was a good friend to all of us andhe will always be remembered in our hearts. When the clock struck 10 there were 34 of the best playersSpokane had to offer all angling and aiming for the topprize. Handicaps were given out just to spice things up a bit. “A”players raced to 7. “B” players raced to 6. “C” players raced to 5.And “D” players raced to 4. The entire field broke down like this: The“A” group 8 players, the “B” group 16 players, the “C” group 8 players, the “D” group 2 players. The players seemed to respond well to thehandicaps that made things tougher, but the cream still rose to the top.The “A” players claimed 6 of the 8 top spots.Terry Rohrman shook off a lot of dust and walked away with the top prizeafter defeating T J Frank in the second set of the finals. Thank you verymuch to all that played that weekend in Johnnie’s honor.1st $500 Terry Rohrman “A”2nd $325 T J Frank “A”3rd $225 Kenny Trambitas “A”4th $150 Jim Ward “A”5th $100 Stacy Mallott “A”, Roger Twiss “C”7th $75 Soud A. “A”, Deacon Pike “B”

There was a relatively new player in the HOT Seat for this monthly OnePocket battle.Jim Fabionar had wins over great players like Tony Chohan and ChrisMcDonald, before finally meeting Rafael Martinez in the FINALS. Mr.Fabionar was playing very good, limiting mistakes and playing greatdefense. The offensive aspect of his game was almost perfect. Duckingwhen necessary and making the shots that counted and cruising to theHot Seat, undefeated.Rafael had to win twice over Mr. Fabionar to take the top prize. Earlier,Rafael ran into a HOT Tony Chohan. Tony was making shots fromeverywhere on the table. Back Cuts with spin and shape. Low percentageshots that most normal humans would pass up. Tony won and then raninto Mr. Fabionar in the finals of the Winners bracket. In the finals of the Double Elimination, Rafael took the two races of thebest of 3 games of One Pocket. Rafael stepped up to the table with all hisone-pocket skills ready to be tested. Mr. Rafael won the first race 2-0. JimFabionar played 4 really good games, making balls and playing jam upsafes. Jim also was able to get out of some of the great safes that Mr.Martinez was executing. All of these great efforts by Mr. Fabionar werefutile against the magic shooting of Rafael. In the End it was 2-0 and 2-0Mr. Martinez.Saturday April 3rd First of the Month One Pocket26 players and $260 addedTotal purse $7801st $240 Rafael Martinez2nd $165 Jim Fabionar3rd $115 Tony Chohan4th $ 80 George Bailey5th-6th $ 50 Chris McDonald and Bart Mahoney7th-8th $ 40 Walter Dorcey and John Lentini

Billy Palmer cruised through the Winners Bracket with out muchcompetition. Winning races to 6 with the closest player only getting 4 games. The Finals of the Winners bracket looked to be the most entertaining of theWinners side. Billy and Tony Chohan were matched up in what looked tobe a grudge match. Tony won the lag and the battle was on. Mr. Chohanstepped up to the table and opened with two quick runs and was up 2-0.On the 3rd rack, Tony came up empty and Billy came to the table. Fourracks later it was 4-2 and Tony Chohan was still in the match, but Billy hadtook a commanding lead. Swapping the next two racks put Billy on the hilland coming to the table ahead 5-3 and looking at a wide-open table. FinalBilly Palmer 6, Tony Chohan 3.Tony Chohan and Rafael Martinez were the final contestants for the One-loss bracket. Tony once again opened with a two-pack. But, Rafael Martinezhad other plans for this match. Rafael had started playing quicker. Almostrunning around the table, Mr. Martinez made ball after ball and ended upwinning the match 6-4.The Finals paired up Billy and Rafael. In true Double Elimination, Rafaelhad to defeat Billy twice to claim the $455 top prize. Rafael won the lag andopened up with a 3-pack. The 4th rack was all Rafael until a tough shot onthe 9 ball into the side pocket missed and left Billy his first shot in 4 games.

LEWISTON, ID What a weekend for 9-Ball! The McDermott Tour Stop at Shooters wasthe place to be April 3 and 4th. Friday night mini tournaments kicked off at7pm as the tournament directors registered players for the weekend event.46 players battled for the limelight in the 64-man field and the $1500 thatShooters’ added. Among the field were 25 of our own local players whomwe wish to thank for continually supporting our events. Shooters putthemselves back on the tournament map since designing their new facilityfor league and tournament play. After the players meeting early Saturday morning, tournament play kickedoff promptly at 10am whittling down to 16 players by 8:30pm. The eventplayed on 7 locally sponsored tables, each covered with new Championshipcloth and sporting brand new balls. The tables were opened and red circlecue balls were used. One tournament highlight was JD sending Stan Tourangeau to the losersbracket with a 9-4 victory. Justice was served Sunday in the finals when

John Lewis Interview continued from page 9

Now, I wasn’t present at that meeting, but when I came back in the office acouple of days later and found out that was announced, I’m like, “HolyCow! Those guys will spread it everywhere.” Over the next few weeks Istarted getting calls from some of the larger league operators and otherswithin the system. They were giving me very pointed questions. The kindof questions that I didn’t feel that could aptly be spun off to a broker toanswer. They wanted to hear straight from the source. Once I told them, Istarted picking up a lot of irritation from the league operators finding outabout this. Again, many of them found out from the referees meeting. Overtime, they pretty much sold me on the concept that this was a decisionthat was not going to work on practical terms for the BCA Board of Directors.I started working towards a new association after a while. I got offers tohelp them out if the association got off the ground. I was kind of in a Catch22. I had loyalty towards my employer, BCA, but I also had loyalty towardsthe membership that I oversee. It’s very obvious to me that the Board ofDirectors did not work in a responsible manner towards their membership.I got caught in between dual loyalties. Loyalty to the BCA Board of Directorsand loyalty to the BCA membership that I felt responsible for. As far as I’mconcerned both of them paid my paycheck.Mark Griffin about a little over a month ago offered me the job to overseethe new for-profit league system he was planning on buying. It’s going tostart up June 1st and I told him that I would not work for him or anyone elsein a for-profit league system. That’s not what this whole system is about. Idon’t think it will work as well under a for-profit owner whether it’s JohnLewis or Don “the Cheese man” or Mark Griffin. I have no problems withMark Griffin. I’m sure he’s well intentioned. He’s a nice enough guy. Heknows the players very well but that’s not what he is about. I think at thatpoint I became the enemy. Of course, he told the board that I was notcooperating. Interestingly enough, the board, without conferring with me,had put in the bid that I was the key employee in this whole thing. I felt thatthe BCA board and Mark Griffin became angry with me when I wasn’t goingto go along with the policy. Again, without conferring with me, they announcedthis many months ago in their advertisements to future players.D”C”A: Mentioning Mark Griffin, I had heard that you are not allowed to bedown at the BCA Nationals and somebody had put a restraining order onyou, not to be able to be in the playing area?JL: I’m not aware that there is an actual physical restraining order. I willrespect whatever the boarddecides. The BCA stated today that I will not be allowed in the tournamentarea.

D”C”A: Is there a meeting scheduled with everybody, the Friday beforethe BCA Nationals starts - at the Hilton?JL: A meeting of league operators? During the tournament?D”C”A: YesJL: That hasn’t been finalized yet, and there will be some league operatorsmeetings and it will be open to the press. They’ll be an announcementwhen it’s finalized. It’ll be off premise. We don’t want to interrupt thetournament in any way. We certainly want to see that the tournament, because it is the final BCA National 8-Ball Championship, end in a fittingway. We want it to be as successful as its ever been.D”C”A: I also heard that the ACS will be holding a National tournamentstarting next year.JL: YesD”C”A: In 2005, in May?JL: I would like to announce that by June 1st for both the 8-Ball and 9-BallChampionships. I imagine that Mark Griffin will be announcing the samething.D”C”A: At the same time?JL: No, I don’t think we would want to go heads-up with each other. I don’tthink that would be good for the players.D”C”A: Did the Riviera put an ultimatum to Mark Griffin, “either you getthe number of players or it’s going to cost you to reserve that time”?JL: I imagine the performance clause in the contract would show thatbecause the BCA has a contract with the Riviera for one more year. TheBCA also has Gary Benson under contract to provide the equipment until2005. I would imagine that it would be on the Mark Griffin part of the bid, that he honor these contracts. It could come back to the BCA to make surethat these performance clauses are made. They may be the ones financiallyliable. I’m not sure if Mark Griffin would be financially liable or BCA. Thecontracts are with BCA so I would imagine that even though Mark Griffinowns the league company, it could still be the BCA that is liable for theperformance. I don’t want to get away from what I should speak properly. One of the two parties is going to be liable for it under the performanceclause, at the Riviera if it happens.D”C”A: I know a lot of players like going to Vegas. They like being there, the atmosphere, what’s not to like about Vegas? Plus you get to play a lotof pool and see a lot of people. Now the BCA had their pro event there also,is something in the works for the ACS being able to create something inthat respect?JL: No. The BCA Open 9-Ball Championship is a strong financial liability to

by Steve Lillis, Chairman WPA/APD and TDStats Compiled By: Tom Rossman, IAPA Financial ChairmanWhen we thought we had seen it all on the WPA Artistic Pool Tour, onceagain the seemingly impossible happened at the Master’s Artistic PoolChampionship at the Hopkins Expo in Valley Forge, PA on 3/25/04 – 3/28/04. Luke “Lucky Luke” Szywala of Poland, who the weekend before wasnosed out by Andy “The Magic Man” Segal’s amazing last shot in theNortheastern Artistic Pool Championship, seemed to post a winning scoreof 202 that was too hard to overcome in the final round. Mr. Szywala alsoknown as “Cool Hand Luke” scored an incredible 9 shots in a row in thetwo final disciplines of Jump and Masse Shots. That enabled him to passthe Italian Champion, European Champion, and 2003 U.S. Open ChampionStefano “The Master” Pelinga, who incredibly the night before stunned theArtistic Pool World by breaking the World Record for Masse Shots held byTom “Dr. Cue” Rossman. Mr. Pelinga hit all 5 Masse shots as Mr. Rossmanhad done the year before in the 2003 WPA World Artistic PoolChampionship in Kiev, Ukraine. Mr. Rossman scored 42 out of a possible47, while Mr. Pelinga hit 44 because he hit more first and second attempts. Each player gets three attempts at each shot and one point is reduced foreach attempt. The stage was now set for the 30 second “miracle”. Tom “Dr. Cue”Rossman had to pull off another Masse miracle to win the Championship.Dr. Cue had been closing the gap in the last two rounds by hitting at onepoint seven shots in a row. Now Mr. Rossman stepped up for threeattempts at the Francois Minguad Masse Shot, which is the final and mostdifficult shot in the 40 shot program. The cue ball must curve around acube of chalk that is placed on the table and then travel down the side railthe length of the table to pocket an object ball hanging in the far corner.Dr. Cue on his first attempt missed the shot by about 18 inches. NowRossman approached his second attempt, which he needed to make towin the tournament. The reason is that the second attempt at that finalshot would give him a total of 203 points to Luke Szywala’s 202. Mr.Rossman missed the shot by less than an inch and 30 seconds later hithis third attempt and posted an identical score of 202 with Mr. Szywala.Unfortunately the tiebreaker rule went in favor of Luke Szywala, as he hadexecuted 17 first attempts in the 40 shot program to Mr. Rossman’s 16first attempts.1st Lucasz Szywala, Poland, Europe $31002nd Tom Rossman, Indiana, USA $25003rd Mark Dimick, Oklahoma, USA $18004th Sebastian Giumelli, Argentina, South America $14005th Stefano Pelinga, Italy, Europe $12506th Mike Massey, Utah, USA $11007th Steve Geller, North Dakota, USA $ 7008th Ken Aylesworth, Washington, USA $ 5509th Andy Segal, New York, USA $ 30010th Ralph Eckert, Germany, Europe $ 29011th Charles Darling, Missouri, USA $ 28012th Matt MacPhail, Massachusetts, USA $ 27013th Bogdan Wolkowski, Poland, Europe $ 26014th Nick Nikolaidis, Quebec, Canada $ 25015th Jamison Neu, Missouri, USA $ 24016th Bruce Barthelette, Massachusetts, USA $ 23017th Sal Conti, Connecticut, USA $ 22018th George Middleditch, Michigan, USA $ 21019th Jason Lynch, Michigan, USA $ 20020th Mark Kulungian, Massachusetts, USA $ 19021st Keith Brewer, Maryland, USA $ 18022nd Rick Hawkinson, Indiana, USA $ 17023rd Jim Garabedian, Connecticut, USA $ 16024th Jay Schmitt, Illinois, USA $ 150Note: Tiebreaker factor used for 1st/2nd and 23rd/24th was most 1st

By Steve Kesting, League Operator

The 2003-04 Eight Ball League Season came to an end onSaturday March 20th at the Keg N Cue in Monroe, Washington. We hadanother record year finishing with 28 teams and over 190 players in theleague. We had participation from 12 different taverns in the area to include2 teams from Duvall Tavern in King County.

This season we had the pleasure of bringing on two sponsors:Sound Beverage of Snohomish County and Sahara Pizza of Monroe. Each tavern offered $1.50 MGD or Fosters beer specials on Thursdaynights. Sahara Pizza offered a $5 coupon for each Eight Ball Break andone coupon for each team that scored a 15-1 or better win against theother team. They paid out over 60 coupons!

The format was a four person Round Robin with a total of 16 gamesplayed each night. BCA Modified 8 Rules. Each team was also allowed torotate substitute players in at any time. Play started at 7:30 each nightand usually ended by 10:30 each night. Teams usually did not travel morethan 10 miles to play against opponents, thus we had to implement 3different divisions with 10 teams in each. Each division played for 18weeks to determine the top 4 teams that would advance to the playoffs. The top 12 teams then played against a team from another division in thefirst round of the single elimination playoffs. Each team that made it to thefinals received a trophy from Snohomish County Awards Trophies andAwards in Monroe. Sound Beverage picked up the tab for the trophies asour lead sponsor.

On March 27th, we had the ceremony at the Keg N Cue in Monroe. The league gave out over $8,200 to all 28 teams based on the number ofwins that they had in the season and bonus money to the Top 12.

We also had a raffle for two new Joss pool sticks ( retail $280 and$380 ) given to the league by Brent Kirschenmann at cost. The proceedsfrom the raffle raised over $550 for the local Boys & Girls Clubs inSnohomish, Monroe and Sultan!!! The money was used to purchasenew billiard equipment for each facility.

Special thanks to my division representatives: Lin Theriault ( whoruns a great eight ball tournament on Monday nights at Jakes Old Inn inSnohomish BTW ), Jackie Tomlinson of Sultan ( who took high woman inher division with a whopping 75% ), Mike Shotwell ( the nicest guy whodidn’t even play this year), Randy Koch ( blatantly stolen from the BellevueEast Side Pool League ) who did all the stats and held the money, andRon Clarijs of Amsterdam for writing the software to run all the league’sinternal reports and accounting. The following taverns put up teams:Prospectors in Goldbar. The 1896 and SkyRiver Pub in Startup. Pastime,Loggers and Bubbas in Sultan. Joes Place, Keg N Cue, Eagles 2327 andFirehouse Grill in Monroe. Big Improvements from the BCA!League System Sale Puts Players FirstFrom: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development

Colorado Springs, CO - According to Billiard Congress of America (BCA)President John Stransky, “The Billiard Congress of America couldn’t bemore optimistic about the recent transfer of ownership for the BCA LeagueSystem. Mark Griffin is the new owner, and he has the players’ and leagueoperators’ interests first and foremost in his mind and in his plans.”The transfer of ownership will occur on June 1, 2004. May 14-22, 2004, Mr.Griffin will take part in the BCA National 8-Ball Championships and will bemeeting with players, league operators, BCA State Association officials, referees and vendors, both formally and informally (his daily schedule willbe posted at the BCA check-in desk). While none of the league policies, procedures or fees will change, Mr. Griffin has many plans to improve theBCA League System and is open to ideas to increase player participationand satisfaction.BCA Executive Director Stephen Ducoff said, “The Billiard Congress ofAmerica staff from Colorado Springs will be checking in players, distributingplayer gift bags, handling roster changes and, most importantly, payingout an expected $800,000 in prize money. Play will be organized and kepton track by Mr. Gary Benson and his tireless staff from High CountryPromotions. Mr. Roger Glenn, recently named as the BCA Director ofReferees, will coordinate and supervise the nation’s premier referee staff.”“Change is never easy, but it’s exciting,” said Mr. Griffin. “The BCA LeagueSystem is no exception. I encourage everyone with a question, concern orcomment to talk with me and visit our website (www.bcapoolleague.com)to find out as much as you can about my experience, dedication andrespect for the sport and the players.”As a trade organization, the BCA will continue to work toward its vision tomake billiards the number-one participation sport in the world. any group that takes that on, including the BCA Trade Association.D”C”A: Are they going to keep that together?JL: Well, I don’t know. They were sent a lot of warning letters that I sawfrom some league operators that were forming the association monthsago, stating that “you’re going to have a tough time seating spectators foryour pro 9-Ball event if you only have 500 players for the 8-BallChampionships – if you’re depending on that group to fill up your seats forthe 9-Ball”. My impressions from those letters was that the BCA boardwas duly warned. Yet the BCA board still decided to go forward with thesale. They were bound and determined to do so. When I talked with MarkGriffin over a month ago and he offered me the job, he explained to me thathe was aware he was the only bidder on the table. There were no otherbidders. Now that’s not what the BCA had said. I understand in their recentpress releases today that they’re not being entirely truthful there. I thinkthat’s kind of “spinning”.D”C”A: I believe Mr Griffin was not in on the vote to sell the leagues, beinga board member, he excused himself because of conflict of interest.JL: Absolutely. Mark had made it clear early on in the process that hewould be interested in the sale. There was another board member thatstated the same, both themselves and Rene Pohlman, from the APA, wouldexcuse themselves from those discussions. I believe the BCA boardhandled that in a proper manner.D”C”A: My question is should he not have resigned from the board inorder to buy the league. It seems to be improper to me and others that Ihave talked about this with. It seems like it would be in the same respectas on Wall Street being “insider trading”?JL: I’m not aware if Mark is on the board right now. He may have resigned. If he hasn’t resigned I could see that that’s a perception that people have, that it’s improper. He may have resigned for all I know. I would say that tohave a contract like that with the Board of Directors and to continue on thatboard is a conflict. I think as long as he asked to be excused on the voting, discussions and board meetings prior to the sale, I don’t think it wasimproper. I don’t think it’s proper to ask anyone to resign just becauseyou’re bidding. Once you win the bid, that is a different situation. I do knowthe BCA is going all out to support Mark Griffin on his new league company.A couple of thing that I need to stress to your readers is that if people longfor the BCA league system, as they are used to having it prior to June 1st,2004, they want to continue with that then they want to go with the ACS.The ACS is exactly what the BCA league system was and they are used towith one exception: it will now have an elected Board of Directors fromtheir membership that’s made up of their peers as opposed to a tradeassociation board that had little in common with what their membershipwas about. The other organization that’s now going to be formed that’scalled BCA Pool League is in fact further away from the BCA league systemthan the ACS is by far. It’s a company, a for-profit entity, and it’s run by anational owner-operator. One of the reasons the ACS came into effect isbecause so many leagues communicated among themselves that thereis no way they would sanction under a for-profit body because they werealready used to sanctioning under a non-profit, under the BCA, and theywanted to continue doing that.D”C”A: I also read somewhere that Mark Griffin would have to change thename from BCA.JL: Three years, is our understanding, is part of the deal. The BCA TradeAssociation and Mark Griffin want to have BCA in the name so it’s misleadingto people, so that people can still think that they are being part of the BCAleague system.D”C”A: Is there anything else that you’d like to add or tell the players?JL: Well, the one thing is that this is now an opportunity. What came out ofthis whole board decision is a real positive in this whole thing. There isnow, independent league operators and players going to have the opportunityto be in charge and self-govern their own national association, somethingthat they haven’t had the opportunity for decades because everyone lookedto the BCA Trade Association to do this. If they’re to go under the BCA poolleague owned by Mark Griffin, they’re going to lose that opportunity to self-govern themselves and the ACS is all about encouraging the leagueoperators and players to take advantage of this opportunity.D”C”A: Are the rules going to be the same?JL: Absolutely. We follow the world standardized rules. They’re publishedby the World Pool Billiards Association (WPA). The ACS will follow thoserules word for word as written down by the WPA just like the BCA does. And we have permission from the WPA directly to do so. I researched thiswhen I was at the board meeting with WPA a month ago to insure that wewould be allowed to use WPA rules. So, being the Secretary/Treasurer ofthe World body, I’m able to find the answers out very quickly.D”C”A: John, I would like to thank you for taking the time to speak to metoday. We appreciate you giving our readers the opportunity to know theACS’s point of view.JL: Thank you for the interview. I hope to see you in Vegas.

The Pechauer West Coast Tour held its 11th stop of the season at SunsetFamily Billiards in Renton, WA, the weekend of April 17th and 18th. SunsetFamily Billiards features 12 Gold Crown IV’s with Simonis felt, as well astwo coin-op tables. They serve snacks and pop in a non-smoking, all-agesenvironment. 58 players showed up from around the Northwest comingfrom as far as Bend, Or and Vancouver, British Columbia. Play startedSaturday morning with a race to 9 on the winner’s side and a race to 7 onthe loser’s.Pechauer points contenders Glenn Atwell, Steve Lingelbach and Paul Potierwere looking to keep pace with Dave Hemmah of California who had takenthe lead in the point’s race at Hard Times. Other top notch competitorsincluded Dan Louie, Rich Geiler, and John Horsfall. Up and coming playersBryce Avila, Woody Nielsen, Simon Pickering, Brett Seyler, and DillonStandley also came to take their shot at the $1,100 first place prize.Woody Neilson might have had the toughest time of it! After losing to RichGeiler in the first round he posted wins over Bryce Avila 7-5 and RandyCamantigue 7-5 and many others. On Sunday had a tough, come-from-behind 4-8 to win 9-8 over Loy Long, to go all the way to 7th place beforelosing to Raul Abenojar 6-9.The winner’s matches on Sunday am brought back some familiar faceswith Glenn Atwell facing John Horsfall and Dan Louie squaring off againstRich Geiler. Atwell steam-rolled Horsfall 9-3; while Louie let Geiler off thehook 9-8 after he missed a tough shot on the 9-ball that he seemed to talkhimself out of.

Diagram 2 is position from nine ball. With nogood shot at the one ball, what is the best — andeasiest! — safety play? Come off the right sideof the one ball to hit about at A and then settle atB. In the mean time, the one ball will be comingoff the cushion at C and going about as far as D.Now your opponent must hit the one or give upan easy combo on the nine ball.Illustrated here is yet another delicious secretabout half-ball shots. If you play a half-ball followshot, the object ball will go very nearly as far asthe cue ball. That means if you can get the cueball onto the cushion as shown, the object ballwill be close to D. Unfortunately, this part of theshot does require precision; if you hit the objectball fuller than half ball, it will travel farther thanthe cue ball, and less for a thin hit.Once again, I’m going to break into my familiarrefrain: you must practice the ideas here beforeyou need them in a game. I’ve spent hours juston Diagram 1, so I think you can devote at least30 minutes to it.(The San Francisco Billiard Academy givesinstruction at all levels from beginning players totraining Instructors through Master level. The New Grovewent all out for this one, a free food buffet wasoffered to all the pool players and lots of doorprizes were given out too.The tournament started fast and hard with themore experienced players ending their gamewith a lot of 9-Ball combos after the break. Thenwhen the more experienced players played eachother, the more skillful the games became. Therewere some really good matches all through thenight. The New Grove and staff would like tocongratulate John (J D) Doherty for being toppoint getter in the qualifying weeks. Way to go JD! He even gave a few lessons to the boys. Thanks Sarge for making it a great night foreveryone and thanks to the owners and staff ofThe New Grove for making it a fun and enjoyablenight for all.OTB

POST FALLS, IDOn March 20th we held a class “C” 8-balltournament at The Falls. With the small amountof players that we had, we were able to get thingswrapped up in one day. Before getting into the tournament standings, Iwanted to touch base with a subject that alwaysgets brought up. “How do you know if someoneis eligible for a tournament?” This question canbe difficult in some cases to answer. I have torely on what I know about him/her, what otherssay about him/her, what him/her tells me abouttheir game, and use my own judgment on thesituation. More often than not, someone does notagree with my decision, but I’ve learned that inthe world of pool you cannot make everyonehappy. This does not mean however that I amright all the time. In this tournament, I did have aplayer that did not belong in a “C” tournament. Idid not know this person, and had he been truthfulwith me about his previous winnings, he wouldhave not been let in the tournament. I was nottold of his past winnings or who he even wasuntil the finals, and by that time it was much toolate to do anything about it. I apologize for thesituation and ask that if you know somethingabout a player that I do not, please tell me beforeit’s too late so I can prevent this from happening. Our third place finisher, John Joplin started out

with a bang defeating Bob Sharp 5-3, LarryClifford 5-2, Mark East 5-1, and Pete Sebala 5-3before losing to Juan Guajardo 5-0. Joplin thenplayed Bill Jackson and lost 3-0 landing him anhonorable third place win.Bill Jackson, our second place winner lost hisfirst match to Ric Schaaf 5-3 putting him in thelosers side. He then went on to defeat DougBurnett 3-1, Ryan Clary 3-0, Dale Ferrell 3-2,Pete Sebala 3-2, Terry Thurlow 3-2 and JohnJoplin 3-0 before his final loss against JuanGuajardo 5-2.Our tournament winner Juan Guajardo took homehis very first win in a big tournament this weekendby tearing through the winners side and neverlooking back. His first victim was Dale Ferrell, whom he beat 5-3, then Chris Kuest 5-3, RyanClary 5-3, Casey Sawyer 5-3, John Joplin 5-0and finally Bill Jackson 5-2 to take home the glory.Great job everyone!Once again, thanks to John Carr the owner ofThe Falls, and his wonderful staff, who makethese tournaments possible.1st $500 Juan Guarjardo (side pot $95)2nd $340 Bill Jackson3rd $200 John Joplin4th $120 Terry Thurlow5th $50 Casey Sawyer, Pete Sebala

Atwell rode the wave all the way to the end ofthe winner’s bracket after he beat Geiler 9-6 inthe hot seat. His travels included wins over DonWiden 9-4, Peter Dimmick 9-5, Simon Pickering9-4, Loy Long 9-6, John Horsfall 9-3, and RichGeiler 9-6.In the fashion of some down-home squaredancing Horsfall faced Louie in the loser’sbracket taking the match 9-8, and then facedGeiler for a chance at the finals. Horsfall onceagain pulled off the match winning by a slimmargin at 9-7. Horsfall’s road to the finalsincluded wins over Martin Tarvydas 9-2, EdHobbs 9-1, Dillon Standley 9-0, Raul Abenojar9-6 before losing to Atwell 3-9, then continuedwith wins over Paul Potier 9-2, Dan Louie 9-8,and Rich Geiler 9-7 which set up a rematch withAtwell. The first game of the finals was a safety battleuntil Atwell got a look at the 1-ball and ran out.Atwell scratched playing a safety in game twoand Horsfall took control. The next time Atwellgot a good look at anything the score was 7-1favoring Horsfall. It looked as though Horsfall wasunstoppable until he scratched in game 9 andleft Atwell a 3 ball out. Atwell took game ten for ascore of 7-3, but in game 11 Atwell came up dryon the break and Horsfall ran out, who then brokeand ran to make the score 9-3. Just when thecrowd thought Horsfall was going to shut thedoor, he scratched on the break in game 13. If13 was unlucky for Horsfall, it was lucky for Atwellwho took full advantage of the opportunity. Atwellproceeded to put on a pool clinic demonstratinggreat play and determination to win making onetough shot after another to stay alive. The nexttime Horsfall got a good look at anything, thescore was tied at nine. They traded games for aten-ten tie. In game 21, Atwell missed the 5 givingHorsfall the opportunity to show why he isconsidered a champion! He ran out, and brokeand ran to get to the hill. In the final game, a

safety battle ensued with Horsfall coming out ontop to earn the $1,100 first place prize and spotin the Reno Open at theOn The Wire Billiard Promotions thanks roomowners Rick Blackorby and Sean Finney forhosting the stop.
