Fans were not disappointed in 2005 as #6 Vivian “Texas Tornado”Villarreal took on the world #5 player Ga-Young “Little Devil Girl” Kim.Villarreal went into the finals undefeated in the tournament and awaitedher eventual opponent Kim as she took on England’s Allison Fisher. In therace to 7 games Kim out played #1 ranked Fisher 7 to 5 and then #4Monica Webb 7-4. The tension was high as the final match betweenVillarreal and Kim was set to be played. An American National Title holderwas a possibility once again as Villarreal battled hard against one of the

hottest players on tour and the reigning Cuetec Cues U.S. OpenChampion. The match came to a head at 6-6 with the crowd intent onevery play. The break went to Villarreal in the final game. After a toughbreak Kim ran out the rack for the match and the title.

Cadillac Island Casino

Story by Mike Jensen

The August $ 1000.00 Added tournament at the Cadillac Island in Longview,Washington was eight ball alternating breaks. The top two finishers wereCanadian Champions, Stan Tourangeau and Kevin Cardinal with BobZack and Tim Robertson a respectful 3rd and 4th place. The last four on the winner side put Stan against Northwest ChampionGlenn Atwell and Kevin Cardinal bumping heads with Chad Bisconer.Stan and Kevin advanced to play for the point match. Stan won the pointand waited for Bob Zack and Kevin to face off. Kevin pulled off a closewin over Bob to get another chance at the I.P.T. Member Stan. Kevinneeded to defeat Stan twice in the double elimination format, but in a hill, hill first set Stan pulled out the win.Island Casino’s pay high B player out of the money a crisp $ 100.00 bill. This time it went to our friend Stan “The Tax Man” Alameda from BendOR. We had a blind draw Calcutta that turned out to be a lot of fun andsome extra cash for players as well as rail birds.Tim Robertson drew Stan for $230.00, Kevin Cardinal drew himself for$140.00. Ken Dodd drew Bob Zack for $90.00. Thanks to everyone foryour support of the Island Casino’s Pool tournaments.1st Stan Tourangeau2nd Kevin Cardinal3rd Bob Zack

This month’s Artistic shot is from the Bank/Kick Discipline and has aDegree of Difficulty (DOD) of 7.This is another shot that has recently appeared on ESPN’s Trick ShotMagic. This bank shot is also the opening shot from the movie “The Hustler”where Fast Eddie hustles the bar tender. To set this shot up, place objectball Done half diamond segment to the right of A pocket and frozen to the rail. Next, place the cue ball in a straight line and frozen to D ball per diagramgraphic. The other two object balls are one diamond from the cushionthat object ball D is frozen to. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cueball into D ball. The cue ball and D ball will come out from between the

two other object balls, separate and D ball pockets in D pocket. The cueball goes to the right and avoids D ball travel line. The two solo balls mustnot be disturbed by any means. A scratch is allowed and the cue ball andD ball may make additional contacts after initial hit. Here are a few helpfulhints on how to execute this great shot. Instead of aiming straight at the Dball and just using high right English for the bank, I begin by aiming straightin line with D balls vertical axis and then pivot the butt of my cue to the left. The amount of pivot is so the center of my cue shaft is aimed betweenone quarter and three eights in from the right side of D ball, in other wordsI’m cutting the D ball to the left slightly. The elevation of my cue is between10 to 15 degrees. Remember, this will be high right English. I also use anopen V bridge. Be sure to get your bridge hand out of the way - both ballswill quickly come back at your hand. When you master this one, you willdefinitely impress your friends.

Usually a miscue is an accident that leads to amissed shot or missed position. Lack of chalk isoften the problem although a faulty stroke thatlands the tip too far from the center of the ball canalso be the cause. Some miscues are done on purpose. I rememberone old-time carom player who was an expert atthe sly miscue. At carom billiards — the kindwithout any pockets — you are expected to playsome shot even if there was very little chance toscore. The old-timer, when faced with such asituation, could be expected to miscue and bysome miracle the cue ball would roll to where theshot would be pretty hard for the incoming player. If it wasn’t intentional, the odds against so manyconsecutive coincidences is astronomical. When I was first learning to play, there was a pretty

good pool shooter who used to practice miscuing while still making thenine ball. All the better to keep his fish on the line. Here are five shots I’ve seen at pool where a miscue is used to accomplisha goal.Shot A is the usual beginner’s jump shot where the cue is level but itstrikes the cue ball so low that the jump takes the cue ball over the blockerto pocket the hidden ball. I hope no one reading this article is still at thatlevel.Shot B is a similar situation, but the problem is avoiding a double hitrather than getting a good hit. If you miscue, the cue ball jumps up andavoids being hit by the cue stick a second time, maybe.Shot C and D are for the same position. The object ball is close to thecushion, the cue ball is only a quarter-inch from the object ball, and theplayer is afraid of stroking toward the ball for fear of a double hit.Shot C is accomplished not like B with a normal miscue, since that wouldget too much energy into the object ball and it would likely strike the stick

after it came off thecushion. Instead, thecue stick is broughtforward under theedge of the cue ballby maybe 1/8-inch.Then, rather than aforward stroke, thestick is lifted straightup, the tip hits the cueball a glancing blow, and just enoughspeed goes into thecue ball to get theobject ball to thecushion. You mightnot call this a miscuebut I do. The shot canalso beaccomplished bydropping the stick orwaggling it sideways.Shot D comes fromsnooker. The goal isagain to get the objectball softly to thecushion. The tip isaimed clear outside the cue ball and at a right angle to the line you want tosend the cue ball along. The tip is so far off-center that a miscue isguaranteed. With a little practice you can get a cushion in this situationwithout noticeably hitting the cue ball with the side of your ferrule. Finally, Shot E is usually shown as a trick shot. The cue ball and object

Have you ever wondered whether ornot you have a dominant eye or how itmight affect your pool game? Haveyou ever checked? Do you know howto check? Many people have neverchecked and don’t know how to.The dominant eye is the eye that looksdirectly at an object, while the non-dominant eye looks at the same objectat a slight angle. Understanding andrecognizing this concept can aid in

correcting potential sighting andaiming flaws. Here is one very basicway to determine your dominant eye:1. Choose a stationery object that’s approximately 10 feet away from

you.2. Stare at the object and then point to it with your finger.3. When your eyes are focused on the object and not at your finger,

you should see two blurry fingers in your line of sight.4. Now, close one eye. Then, close the other eye.5. Notice that with one of your eyes closed, your finger will point

exactly at the object. Now, when the other eye is closed, your finger will point at an area shifted slightly from the object. The eye with which you see your index finger pointing exactly at the object is your “Dominant Eye.”

It’s possible that you may see two fingers and have trouble pointing yourfinger at an object. In this case, you might not have a dominant eye. Here’s how this applies to pool…

The diagram shown is an example of how weapproach center ball with our eyes. Ideally, weaim for a precise point on the cue ball. In thiscase, that point is where the two solid linesmeet. However, if you have a dominant eye, that eye will sent more information to your brainthan the other eye.If you’re unaware of this, it can cause your cueto align itself parallel with that dominant eye. Inour example, the dotted line indicates the visualparallel shift the player has made due to adominant left eye. As you can see, the contactpoint has now moved from the actual center ofthe cue ball to what the dominant eye perceivesto be the center of the cue ball.Still following me?Obviously, just determining our dominant eye

is not enough to improve our pool game. However, when we recognizethis fact, we can make the proper adjustments to begin sighting shotscorrectly. Having a perfect stroke demands we know where the center ofthe cue ball is. This may require retraining your eyes.Honestly, there’s not enough room on this page to cover the various waysthat we can use this information to fix our sighting and aiming flaws. There is, however, a training aid I was recentlyintroduced to that is a small, simple, yetextremely effective tool to help make thiscorrection. This device is called the 3rd EyeStroke Trainer.Created by Joe Tucker, a truly remarkableplayer, it’s a small plastic extension that slidesover the tip of your cue. There are two armsthat continue approximately the width of acue ball. Stroking with the 3rd Eye Trainer demands your sighting andyour stroke to correct itself. Periodically using this trainer will dramaticallyincrease your accuracy by retraining your eyes and your brain to findcenter ball. I personally discovered a slight sighting flaw in my own gameand have used it with numerous students in my clinics to identify andcorrect theirs. As described by Joe Tucker, if you were aiming for the center of a bullseyeand your first group of shots went to the left of the target, you would makean adjustment and aim your next group of shots to the right of the target. This is going against your eyes, but our results indicate that what webelieve to be center is clearly not the center. In pool, our results are not soobvious. The 3rd Eye Stroke Training shows you how to discover these problemsand correct them. All the information from this article, and more, can befound at Joe Tucker’s web site. Visit www.JoeTucker.net to view thecomplete stroke trainer movie, including previews of the “aiming workout”

From The Work Bench

FROM THE ASHES THE OLD BECOMES NEWThe first time I went into Grand Central Market was 1945. We had beenraising chickens and Dad and Mom were very good at it. They bought aplace on 109th and Division that had 16 chickens and one very aggressiverooster. The next year we had 200 chickens and we needed a place tokeep the dressed ones. Grand Central had a very large Freezer in thebasement and rented lockers to keep foodfrozen.I always enjoyed the excitement of going tothe market for there was so much to seeand so much going on. The folks sold thefarm and we didn’t have occasion to go backuntil 1956 when Dad and I were called on toset up 6 - 4x8 pool table and 1 - 5x10 snookerfor the change in the Market .The market was to be changed to GrandCentral Bowl and it was to be the finest inthe city. As we arrived Bill Hulen was busywith his new plastic art process creating the most unusual 3 dimensionalmurals. Bill used a filled polyester plastic with color to create scenes thatto this day jump out to be viewed. The fighting stallions in the Billiardroom was my favorite and it has survived to this day. I constantly watchedhim out of the corner of my eye, and he came over and as Dad wasputting the plaster of Paris in the seams commented that the plastic resinswould do a great job for it had the ability to move with the slate . Of courseDad said that Plaster was always used and it was good enough for him,but I never forgot Bill and his process and I began to experiment with theTap 500 filled polyester and when Dad was around I used for all types ofrepair. It became available as Bondo later and replaced the lead methodof repairing dents in the automotive section.Grand Central Bowl became a major part of my life for the next 50 years.Herman Levin became my best friend and mentor. Whatever Hermanwore, I wore; however Herman phrased his words, I phrased mine.Herman loved the bowling lanes and the business, but he had a shockand was told that he had a very short time to live. He had complete failureof both kidneys. At that time there was no hope and he was told to put hishouse in order and prepare for death. Herm put an add in Wall StreetJournal and it was answered by Stuart Legris. The sale price was agreedand a hand shake given. Stu went back to Seattle to get ready to move toPortland . Herman’s doctor called him with great news. A machine wasdeveloped that could take over the Kidneys function and he would live aslong as he went on a regular visit to this Dialysis machine. He called Stuwith the good news. Stu informed him that he had given notice to hisemployer, sold his house and was prepared to move. “I shook the hand ofa gentleman whose word I knew was good.” There was no contract writtenthat could have been broken but both men lived by their word.A new era began at Grand Central and I had a new hero. I moved into thebasement and built a shop where we would be building the Sheehan pooltable for 6 years. We never had a lease there was no first and last andthe rent was very reasonable; however, I never had to reach into mypocket for Stu always had some task for us to do. Cover tables, build thecontrol desk, remodel this or that, build pool tables to match theAnniversary. He was always concerned with my well being and wouldoffer advice and help when I needed it. Stu had a spring to his step whenhe walked through the lanes that never told his age. I asked him how hedid it and his answer was, “It kills me but I will not let them know.” Nowthat I am at that age I know just what he meant and I try not to let themknow, but after that flight with a set of slate it’s tough. Stu always lookedstraight ahead and never down or back. It was a point that I admired inhim but it was his down fall. He went over to the produce company thatboarded his parking lot to tell them that their produce trucks were takingup his customer spaces during league. As always he looked straightahead and went right off the loading dock. The injuries proved fatal and Ilost a great friend.I could not respect the new management and for several years I did notset foot in the Bowl and finally it closed down and I felt that an era hadcome to an end, but I got a call from another good friend, Dan Lanzen.Concepts entertainment was to blow new life into Grand Central. And theAnniversary tables were to be restored to their original glory and the Menof the Cloth were the ones to do it . The perimeter of the building would beretail shops and the core bowling like it has never been seen in Portland.Overstuffed chairs and sofas with tables. Drinks served at your lane.A brand new billiard room will be on the second floor with it’s own bar andfood service. We took the tables down and moved them to storage untilfinal plans are made. The renovation will take eight months but a new andbetter Grand Central Market will rise from the ashes and debris.Next month we will be telling the story of the tables that were born on that100th Anniversary in the life of the Brunswick Balke Collender Co. Thatyear changed the billiard table for ever.

Topspin, or follow, is the most common type of cue ball rotation becauseit’s what you get when you simply roll a ball down the table. Natural roll, inwhich there is no slippage between the ball and the cloth, is, believe it ornot, the most topspin you can put on a cue ball when you shoot it downthe table.Hit a cue ball in the center and it will slide for a short distance before thefriction of the cloth converts the slide into natural roll. To give the cue ballnatural roll from the moment it is struck, the tip of the cue must contactthe cue ball halfway form the center to the top. A higher hit means amiscue, consequently there is no way to put an excess of topspin on thecue ball. As scientist George Onoda has helpfully pointed out, maximum

backspin, sidespin and topspin, can be practicedby using a striped ball because the stripe is exactlyhalf a ball wide. Clean a striped ball, chalk your tipso it will leave a mark on the ball, and convinceyourself that halfway out from the center is as far

as you can safely hit a cue ball. In the diagram, note that the bottom edgeof the tip hits the top edge of stripe.Topspin LimitUnfortunately for this particular practice method, some balls now have astripe that is wider than half a ball. There is no technical difference between the terms “follow” and “forcefollow.” The latter is used when the cue ball is struck hard, and almost allplayers think that by using high speed they are spinning the cue ball fasterthan natural roll, but such is not the case. The rotational speed is greateron a high-speed follow shot only because the linear speed is greater.Until the cue ball hits a ball, there is no slippage between the cue ball andthe cloth. When a cue ball with natural roll hits an object ball full, it stops dead if theballs are the same weight, but the cue ball doesn’t stop spinning. Becauseof the friction of the cloth, the topspin quickly makes the cue ball resumeits forward roll. Watch for it an you will see the hesitationon a full-hit follow shot.

Fair and Foul FollowsOnce you and the world’s referees understand thatwhen a cue ball with follow hits an object ball full it hesitatesbefore following, it is easy to recognize the small-gap foul. The shot atthe bottom of the diagram is a foul if the cue follows through to hit the cueball again. The double hit makes it easy to bank the cue ball to the otherend of the table for position. If the cue ball doesn’t hesitate at impact, thestroke is a foul. With such evidence at hand, there should be no causefor arguments. To see the difference between fair and foul, set up the shot shown at thetop right, with six inches between the balls. Use maximum follow, shoothard, and note the hesitation of the cue ball. It’s not easy to get the cueball to the other end of the table with topspin alone. The cue ball might stillhave topspin when it comes off the rail, which will kill its speed completely.

Western BCA RegionalsWestern BCA’s ninth annual regional 9-ball tournamentWestern BCA is proud to announce that there will be guaranteed $12,000added prize money at the ninth annual regional 9-ball tournament, Oct.25-29. This includes $5,000 from Chinook Winds Casino Resort and$1,000 from BCA Pool League. Along with the activities offered at ChinookWinds and Lincoln City, there will be vendors, giveaways, raffles, second-chance tournaments, mini-tournaments and ringgames. You can expect all that and more atthe premier 9-ball tournament on the west coast,if not the country. The upcoming 9-ball tournament will see the splitof the men’s Open division into Open-A andOpen-B divisions like those that the 8-ball tournament has. Placement will be according to the player’s 8-ball ranking. Some of the reasons for this change are to alleviateany confusion about a player ’s ranking for either of theassociation’s tournaments and level out the playing field in each division. The revised dress code is available on the entry forms and on the WesternBCA web site (www.westernbca.org/tournaments). Of special note, players on the tournament floor must wear sleeved shirts of polo/golf style or button-down style with a conventional fold-over collar. No T-shirts, sweats, warm-up suits or jogging suits are allowed. Playersmust keep their torsos covered at all times. For mixed scotch doubles and teams competitions, matching shirtsare encouraged but not mandatory. As Western BCA enters its 12th year, it continues to grow and attract moreplayers from a wider area. We are happy to welcome back the Roseburg-area players. Bruce Deal, league operator, and Janet Thomas, secretary, have started up Roseburg BCA League in Oregon. Inland BCA, lead byJohnnie Landis in Spokane, Wash., is expanding to include teams fromas far as western Montana. Applauded manager, Jeff Jackson, of theIsland Casino’s has added Western BCA pool leagues to their Kennewick,Wash. location under Cindy Doty’s Northwest Players League. CherryCity BCA league operators, Shawn and Tracii Self in Salem, Ore., continueto add players, divisions and nights to their booming league and CascadePool League has an innovative way to qualify single players with their14.1 night. The board of directors looks forward to seeing the membership atthe regional tournaments, and comments and suggestions areencouraged; call Bill Henderson, president, at 360.477.1867 or send e-mail to [email protected]. TIGARD, OR - Even though it was only a field of 15, this was an importantevent to many players to obtain points. The players also chose to play arace to 9. With the yearend prize just a month away and a lot at stake, play was just as exciting as it has been all year.To start the tournament off, Joanne Ashton (current #1 player on the tour)and Mary Hopkin (2nd place player on the tour) played each other right outof the gate. With only a 100 point difference, this was a crucial match forboth.Joanne however, won that match in a hill-hill match 9-8 and continued todominate the remainder of the tournament, gaining the right to play in thefinals by also beating Marion Morales 9-1, Julie Valdez 9-4 and Kim Jonesfor the point, 9-7.Kim Jones made her way to the finals by beating Liz Cole 9-8, TamreRogers 9-3, Martha Hartsell 9-7 then losing to Joanne Ashton 9-7. Movingto the losers side, she then beat Liz Cole again 9-5 to play Kim in thefinals.Joanne took a quick lead 7-3, but Kim came back and before you knew it,it was 8-7. With Joanne on the hill, what we thought was the last game,Joanne ran down to the nine, leaving herself a fairly easy shot. But, shemissed and Kim tied up the match.Joanne broke, scratched and Kim made a difficult 1-9 combo to win herfirst ever NWPA event. AREA PLAYERS GEAR UP FOR 8TH ANNUAL NORTHERN LIGHTSSHOOTOUT IN RUGBYby Pierce County Tribune staff writer, Rugby, ND The Northern Lights Shootout began in 1999 to bring together the top 8-ball pool players from the region and Canada. Eight years later, the tournament remains one of the largest in NorthDakota, boasting a total purse of $15,000 and attracting 150 men andwomen pool players from several states and Canadian provinces to Rugby. This year’s double elimination tournament will be held Dec. 7-10 withmost of the matches at the city armory, with Bob’s Pizza Inn, Jester’sLounge, and the Eagles Club hosting some matches. Mark Hamilton, tournament co-coordinator, expects another strong field. “The men’s draw will have around 128 entered, and we expect about32 on the women’s side,” he said.Big payouts Top prize on the men’s side is again $3,000 with the runner-up receiving$2,000 and third place earning $1,000. The top 32 players receive apayout. On the women’s side, the champion earns $800. Runner-upreceives $500 and third place gets $300. The top eight receive a payout. Players from North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana andWashington are expected to participate, as well as players from Manitoba,Alberta and British Columbia. Hamilton notes that at least six playerswho have appeared in the Rugby tournament in past years have alsoparticipated in the International Pool Tournament (IPT) which is the biggestpayout tournament in the country. “One of our top players who comes to Rugby regularly has placed inthe top 50 in the IPT,” Hamilton said. “This really speaks for the caliber ofplayers who come to town.” Eight-ball matches will get underway at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8 withthe finals expected to begin around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10. In addition, a consolation tournament will be held for players knockedout of the main tournament, and there is a payout for the winner. There isno entry fee for the consolation tournament. Also, a Calcutta will be heldat Jester’s Lounge on Saturday evening, Dec. 9.New this year

For the first time this year, a special Geographical Center InternationalCup 9-Ball Tournament will be held on Thursday, Dec. 7 beginning at 3p.m. Cost to enter is $40 per player with the first 16 Canadians and the first16 Americans to sign up. The format is a race to seven. Payout is $1,000for first place and the cup trophy. The second place finisher gets $500with third and fourth place receiving their entry fee into the weekend’s 8-ball tournament.Economic boost While the tournament creates another event for the community, it alsogenerates an economic boost for several local businesses in earlyDecember, mainly the motels, gas stations, bars and restaurants, aswell as some retail stores. Hamilton said the support from the community over the years has beentremendous and the tournament would not be possible without theircontinued support. “The local businesses have been great, and weappreciate their part in making this tournament possible,” he said.Public welcome The tournament is open to the public, and it’s a chance to see some ofthe best 8-ball players in action. Admission is free. This year, the tournamenthas been taken over by the Geographical Center Chamber of Commerce.Hamilton will be assisted by Jeremy Schoenberg, Darin Williams, andthe chamber board members. For more information, contact Hamilton at701-776-5096 or Schoenberg at 701-776-2941.

Kevin Trudeau & Efren Reyes

By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

Posted: September 10, 2006Never before to my knowledge hasthere been pool at this magnitudeavailable online live that is broughtto you in the comfort and privacyof your own home. We havealways had to wait to read about it,hear about it, or with any luck buya tape of great players in greatmatches. This has always beenmonths and sometimes yearsdown the road. If you weren’t therein person trying to find a seat withthe best advantage you were outof luck. I thoroughly enjoyed myselfand found myself reacting tomisses, wins, breaks and even tothe audience and announcers. Thisis like watching your favoritefootball, basketball or favorite sporton TV only on your computer. Andthis is live, online.Reyes, a total master of the greenfelt wins the lag by a hair butmakes nothing on the break.Morris runs the table with little effort.Winner breaks.Rodney breaks and came upempty.Efren takes the one in the corner and runs out.So far the break is the disadvantage. The players are miked so you can hear themtalking as they play and talk to the cornermen(Reyes: Santos Sambajon - Morris: JunnePadua).Efren breaks and again comes up short.Rodney’s back at the table. If one of these guysstarts making balls on the break they will have

an advantage. Morris jumps up on the three balland misses in the corner.Efren runs to the 8 and makes a tough shot inthe side. The video quality is good when the focus is inbut following the player around the tablesometimes takes a few seconds. Nothing onthe break again. That’s four breaks, no balls andRodney ties it at 2-2.

The banter between the players andthe cornermen (Reyes: SantosSambajon - Morris: Junne Padua) isa unique facet that usually you neverhear. The break again plays the culprit witha scratch. When it comes to ball in hand afterthe break there is no perfect way torun the table but finding a pocket forthe 8 is the key.Again I am live at home watchingonline. This is so unique to me. Thistype of technology has never beenavailable in the billiard community.Efren runs down to the 8 and jumpsup on his shot off the rail and misses.Rodney looks surprised and gets upand runs out. Now 3-2 Morris. Finally someone makes somethingon the break in rack 6 the 10 in theside and Rodney runs out 4-2. Efren wins now 4-3. Efren breaksand again nothing on the break.Rodney has the 12 in the side but hestands up walks to his seat, takes adrink of water to calm down, comesback and nails the shot but thenmissed the next shot by overcutting. You can see the pain on Rodney’s

face. He knows the importance of each gameand especially each shot.Efren up now at the table and runs out 4-4.The live online video even has replay. How coolis that!Rack 9: All Bust No BallsRodney at the table and gets out 5-4.How many times can the break not work -

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED

Pool Cues Stolen

in Oregon

On Tuesday, August 29, 2006, our home in Grants Pass, Oregon, wasbroken into. Among the things stolen were two very distinctive pool cues.We are attempting to get the values verified for insurance purposes. Wedo not believe the thieves were after any pool cues due to what they didand did not take. They were strictly into “smash and grab”.Barney’s late father was Chub LaMontagne, he was an avid pool playerall of his life, as well as a pool room owner, and cue maker. He was well

known among some of the greatest players of his time. In 1939 Chubwon a “Rambow” cue at a Northern State Snooker Championship inCalifornia. This cue is inlayed with much detail, all of which is ivory criss-cross, lines, and dots. The cue butt is jointed as it at one time had anadditional interchangeable weighted butt. There was two shafts. The second stick was Chub’s personal cue he used for many years. Ithas in the black resin butt, two “Harvey’s Wagon Wheel” red dice, it hasa green/white linen wrap, it is stamped with the “CHUBCUE” logo on thebutt plate, there were three matching shafts with this stick. They wereboth in a brown “suitcase” style cue case when stolen.

If you wish to contact us feel free to call:Barney at 541-471-4987 or 888-740-5626.Or at 203 SE H St, Grants Pass, OR 97526.Thank you, Patty LaMontagne

nothing on the break. Efren now stalking the table and runs out. There has been only two misses one by each player. Someone breaksand the other runs out. Nothing again - it’s the break!Rodney takes his time but is there too much thinking? He kept getting alittle out of position every shot until the cue got too close to the 6 ball forthe side and has to take the 2 in the corner but didn’t get good position onthe 6 again. Tries the 6in the corner andmisses. Efren runs out andleads 6-5. You only getone turn at the table thatis the norm. Efrenbreaks and makes aball in the side. I love technologyespecially when itworks - and thisdoes!!!The announcers comments on Efren’s spider fingers to bridge over the14 to make the 6 but has only a half pocket for the 8 ball. NO... Efrenmisses the 8!Rodney plays a safety but everyone thinks Efren can see the 8. He triesto make it but fouls on the 15 ball and makes the 8 and the crowd goeswild but doesn’t know Efren fouled - loss of game. Tie 6-6.Besides everyone at the World 8-Ball Championships, we here onlinewith the membership to the live video feed saw it too. This is the world of pool to come!!!Efren wins the next game and is breaking at 7-6. A lucky kick on thebreak keeps Reyes at the table.HE RUNS OUT AND WINS THE $500,000 FOR FIRST PLACE withhis only break and run of the match.Rodney just had too many misses but graciously accepts $150,000 forsecond place.Efren jumps for joy after he won - he just couldn’t stop smiling. He spoketo the audience in his native language. INCHEON, KOREASix of the world’s greatest and beautiful players com-peted in the first annual Empress Cup at the HyattRegency in Incheon, Korea on Sept 14. The starsincluded Jeanette Lee, Tiffany Nelson, Ga YoungKim, Miyuki Sakai, Yuram Cha, and Jennifer Barretta. The format was round robin races to 5, alternatebreaks, and ladies were in two groups of 3 playerseach. Best record in each group would play eachother for the Empress Cup.The event was pressure packed with a standingroom audience and media including major news-papers, radio and every major TV network coveringthe event, with MBC ESPN exclusively filming thematches live.First up in Group A was the Black Widow against9mm Barretta and the nerves were showing as bothplayers made easy unforced errors the first 2 racksincluding an easy 9 ball combination missed by Lee.Lee reasserted herself to win the next game andthe two battled until 4-3 Lee advantage when shemissed a straight in the side 9 Ball to conclude thematch. Barretta came back and broke and ran thelast rack to win.Next Group B, World Champion Ga Young Kim easily took out Nelsonwho seemed to be having trouble maintaining her normal solid game.Lee came back the next match and was visibly determined to show theKorean fans why she’s the world’s most famous pool player and she torethe young 19 year old sensation Cha apart with amazing shot making, banks, and caroms to win 5-0.

Jennifer Barretta Empress of Pool

Back in Group B, Kim faced Japan’s Sakai. Sakaiseemed very nervous and botched some easy runouts and an easy 9 Ball which gave Kim a boostand she proceeded to run over Sakai 5-1 to secureher spot in the finals. The final group match was Barretta against Cha.Lee needed Cha to win and hold Barretta to 3 gamesin order for Lee to advance. Unfortunaetly for Lee,Barretta had alternate plans as she played flawlesslyto cruise to the finals with a 5-0 win over Cha.The finals pitted Korea star Kim against USA’s hope-ful Barretta, who was appearing in her first interna-tional finals. Shotze’s in Everett, WA held its 6thAnnual Washington State 8-BallChampionship tournament. In the pastwe had several major players taking partin this tournament, but this year theycame out in droves. It was the largestgathering of heavy hitters in a major longtime around here. The field consistedof (58) men and (6) women for a firstever completely full field of (64). We hadcome close in having a full field in thepast years but never quite got there. It was amazing to watch the matchesthrough out both days. Everywhere youturned there was another that gatheredspectators around the area to watch.Even as most players were defeated and put out of the tournament, many stayed and continued to watch other matches. It was a sight tobehold.I hope many of you saw that there was an article in the Saturday, EverettHerald announcing the tournament and then another in the Tuesday,Herald recapping some of the tournament play. If not, take time to find acopy and read them.Dan Louie has been in almost every one of Shotze’s tournaments and Ibelieve has placed in all of them. But it’s been awhile since he hadactually won one. Louie went undefeated through this very tough field. His matches were Suzanne Osborne (5-1), Rocky (5-2), Charlie Brown(5-2), Mike Zimmerman (6-5), Jim Masterman (6-2), and then the allimportant point match against Richard Geiler (6-2).Richard Geiler is another wellknown tournament player who has beenparticipating in the majority of Shotze’s tournaments. What few of hismatches I was able to catch a peek at, it sure looked like he was the oneto beat. Richard’s matches were Frank Anthony (5-0), Glenn Atwell (5-0), Jeff Leonards (5-2), Russian Dave (6-2), Eddie Mataya (6-3), andthen that first loss against Dan Louie for the point (2-6) and then JamesDavee (5-3).I heard Ford tell a couple spectators that he wished he had $20 for everytime he had watched Louie and Geiler play each other in the finals overthe last 25+ years. Got to say, it was a great match to watch. Louie got

on a roll and just never let Geiler to thetable. But if you think about it, that thebest way to beat a great tournamentplayer like Geiler, is to not let him seethe table very many times. The matchwent Louie (7) and Geiler (2). Thosespectators that stuck around got a treatwatching these two veterans go at it.Louie gets his name added to the plaquethat hangs of the wall next to table 9 atShotze’s and his entry fee is paid nextyear. Congratulations. Also want to congratulate Linda Carterfor winning (2) of her (4) matches tocapture hi-woman for this tournament.

ball are touching and the object ball is frozen tothe cushion. You align your stick parallel to thecushion and far enough out on the cue ball sothat you will miscue but maybe not so far aswith shot D. By some strange double kiss theobject ball is guided into the pocket. Are these shots legal? Some feel they are, especially C and D. The current rules are notperfectly clear on the matter. In the currentlyproposed revision of the World StandardizedRules, intentional miscues are explicitly

forbidden as not part of the game.Another problem is what to do with unintentionalmiscues. The ultra-high-speed video in theJacksonville Project shows that many miscuesinvolve the side of the stick slapping the cueball. To make life complicated for the referee, not all miscues have contact with the ferrule. For the time being, unintentional miscues areassumed to not be fouls in and of themselves. You can do your part to avoid confusion bymaking sure your tip is chalked.
