“I knew then and I know now that, when it comes to justice, there is no easy way to get
it. You can't sugarcoat it. You have to take a stand and say, "This is not right.”
— Claudette Colvin
Presenting the Play
“SECRET WHISPERS”
Written by Sister Vanessa Hinton
This play is based on a true story about a teenager named
Claudette Colvin who despised the injustices black people
suffered in Jim Crow Montgomery, Alabama. For Claudette Colvin,
hoping for justice wasn’t good enough, and this fifteen year
old decided to do something about it.
Narrator: Sister Cynthia Harrison
Minister of Music: Brother Robert C. Hailes, Jr.
SCENE ONE: TOO YOUNG TO UNDERSTAND
Claudette experiences the Jim Crow South at the age of four in a
general store. A white boy cuts her in line, touches her hands, and
she gets blamed!

Young White Boy Lamonté Christian

SCENE SIX: ”WHO IS CLAUDETTE COLVIN?”
After Claudette’s arrest, the question of boycotting entered the minds
of the Negro citizens in Montgomery, Alabama. The women of the
Women’s Political Council (WPC) wanted to know for certain if the
entire city would support the effort. Could Claudette Colvin be the
proper person to “trigger” the movement? The WPC did a background
check.

SCENE SEVEN: “HE WILL DELIVER THEE!”
Claudette Colvin had a close relationship with God. One can
assume that her relationship grew even closer during the trying
times in her life after the arrest. If you know Jesus, then you know
he can deliver you from anything!

SCENE TWO: HORRIBLE BUS INCIDENTS

Montgomery, Alabama, a few Negro riders “stood up” to the mean,
tough, and surly bus drivers as early as 1946.

SCENE FOUR: MY FAVORITE TEACHER
Miss Geraldine Nesbitt, Claudette’s favorite teacher, was awesome. She

SCENE FIVE: MARCH 2, 1955
Knowledge is power! Claudette Colvin knew the rule. You did
not have to get up for a white person if there were no empty
seats left on the bus, and there weren’t. So on March 2, 1955,
she decided she wasn’t going to take the injustices that Black
people endured anymore!
