PASTOR’S LETTER
Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
Our Church celebrates the Feast of Christ the King today. Our country celebrates our great national holiday of Thanksgiving this week. I would like to inform you about a development in our parish’s life for which I am most grateful.
You will meet in these bulletin pages today 11 parishioners who have accepted the call to join our Parish Advisory Board. Each one attended our Leadership Retreat in September and offered their services to a newly reorganized parish advisory board. These parishioners expressed willingness to serve and they each agreed to a regimen of monthly meetings and continued deep engagement in all matters of parish concern.
It is my view that we are now well positioned to get on with the mission of Mount Carmel at a heightened pace. Our finances are in good order and we have a Finance Council who keeps a watchful eye on all money matters. Our Academy remains high-powered and well-supported. Witness the phenomenal success of the recent Hall of Fame Dinner. The School Board also meets monthly and supports our new principal and our extraordinary Parent’s Guild. We are good to go!
In the recent decades of the post Vatican II Church, parish advisory boards were first called parish councils. All this grew out of the clear mandate of Vatican II to empower the laity and to harness the energy of every baptized Catholic. Parish Advisory Boards are the latest iteration of this spirit-filled movement. I view the Parish Advisory Board as a necessary guide to our direction and our mission.
Please take note of the Parish Advisory Board draft of our updated mission statement:
“We are the Roman Catholic community of Our Lady of Mount Carmel based in Tenafly, New Jersey. Our mission is the promotion of the holiness of life through the celebration of the Sacraments, the sharing of the Gospel and the promotion of Catholic values. We offer pastoral care through ministries that provide education, healing, spiritual growth and social outreach in the Carmelite tradition.”
We also have a very crisp motto:
“No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done, no matter where you’re from, no matter where you’re going, no matter how good or bad things seem, you are always welcome.”
Your feedback on all this is most welcome. Feel free to be in touch with me or with any of the Parish Advisory Board members. That is precisely what they are called to do. Hear the needs of the church and respond to them. By the way, the Parish Advisory Board has had two meetings already and, at both, concern for our youth and our ability to engage them in the life of our community has already surfaced as a deep and difficult concern.
Yes, Christ is the Lord of our lives and, yes, we are very blessed to be living in the United States of America. Thanks be to God for both blessings and have a happy Thanksgiving.
Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, fr. Dan [email protected]

MEET OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL’S
DOLORES MILLER moved to Tenafly in 1966. She says of Mount Carmel parish: “We’re moving right along beautifully and have revitalized the mission to make it more inclusive and we want to expand the parish – getting new families involved in everything and anything. Dolores’ favorite quote is “To love another person is to see the face of God.”
MIKE BRUNO has been with OLMC for 36 years. He loves music and art and does pencil sketches to relax. Mike is trying to teach himself the piano in his free time, though he admits “not too successfully.” Mike spent almost 30 years in law enforcement (11 as Chief of Police) working to protect and serve the public. He says, “When I left that I sought another form of service and became the Executive Director of the largest food pantry in Essex County serving people in need. Our Lady of Mount Carmel has always been an integral part of my family life and I want to give back in a very personal way.” Mike’s favorite quote is: “The only time you should look down on someone is when you’re helping to pick them up.”
ROSE ANN AND MARTIN MIGLIETTA have been with Mount Carmel for 20 years. Rose Ann says, “I am Mount Carmel Proud! I was fortunate enough to serve at the Academy and now am excited to serve our parish on the Advisory Board. I look forward to help grow our dynamic faith community in the many service opportunities and social events that are offered here at Mount Carmel.” Marty prays, “Jesus, give me the wisdom to help guide the youth of our parish in staying committed to the faith and to support those in our neighborhood who are most in need.” Rose Ann loves to dance and Marty refers to himself as “a suffering Mets fan!”
JOHN BARRETT has been with OLMC for 64 years. When asked why he wants to serve on the Parish Advisory Board, John said, “Over the years, the Carmelites and parish have been very supportive to me both personally and professionally. Fr. Dan, with his enthusiasm and energy, has a renewed vision for the parish. I want to support him in helping him achieve his objectives.”

PARISH ADVISORY BOARD
JOHN SULLIVAN has been at OLMC since 1988. John likes hiking the religious pilgrimage trails of the world. He says, “Your goals will be achieved if you keep focused, train hard and have confidence in yourself. My prayers and thoughts will be dedicated to the OLMC community.”
JOE SALVATORE has been with Our Lady of Mount Carmel for 19 years. Joe loves art and music. When asked about why he wants to serve at Mount Carmel, Joe said: “The decision to serve was inspired at the moment in life when God’s influence was realized and appreciation provided the motivation.”
DEBBIE VIAR has been with Mount Carmel for 10 years. Debbie is a huge classic movie fan. She says, “I want to give back to the community that has given me so much.”
MEDDY HELLMAN has been with OLMC for 38 years. She would like to further her involvement in the parish. Meddy enjoys beautifying God’s creation by gardening.
Kate has been with Mount Carmel for more than 17 years. When asked about serving, she said that she wants “to contribute more to the on-going adventure of OLMC.” Kate told us that on a solo trip from California to New York she drove on the original Route 66.
Roger has been with OLMC for more than 36 years. He feels that “we need to consider various ways of bringing back non-practicing Catholics back to the table for their sake as well as part of an overall OLMC strategy to increase the number of parishioners. Roger describes himself as a “woebegone New York Knicks fan.”
