From Our Pastor My earliest memories of communion are from my childhood. I remember sitting next to my

mother in church when the intoxicating aroma of grape juice would come by in tiny little cups. Like most households, we never had grape juice at home because, you know, stains… Still, I would breathe deep of the juice as I passed the tray, but I was not to take one for myself. Communion was only for members of the church, and I was a child. When I was old enough I would attend Communicants Class, join the church, and then be eligible for communion.

The summer I was twelve everything changed. The General Assembly decided that baptized non-members could take communion in Presbyterian churches, even children! You might think that I was delighted by the change, but I wasn’t. Having been told my whole life that it was not okay for kids to take communion, I couldn’t shift gears that quickly. That spring, at the age of thirteen, I took my Communicants Class, and joined the church. It was the tradition of that church family that we were received on Maundy Thursday. I didn’t take communion until I was a full-fledged member of the church at that very special service.

I have long since made peace with our open communion. More than that, I have embraced it and even extended it. When I first arrived in Puyallup to be pastor of this church, I would say something like this, “Jesus invited those who have been baptized in his name to share in the feast which he has prepared.” Then, I started taking note of our young people.

Many of our families choose to have their children baptized as infants. My invitation was no barrier to including these children in our communion. Other families choose for their children to be baptized at the time they profess their own faith in Jesus Christ, usually at Confirmation. My invitation did exclude these children who were growing in their faith right alongside their Sunday school friends. That’s when I changed to the invitation I have used for the last several years, “If you trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then his invitation comes also to you.” It became a matter of faith, at whatever stage of development, rather than having participated in the sacrament of baptism.

As of this week, one year after the closing of the 2016 General Assembly, our invitation to communion has been broadened even further. You will notice this beginning on July 2. Our Book of Order has been amended to encourage a fully open communion. My invitation to the table will sound like this from now on, “In the Presbyterian Church we celebrate a fully open communion. If you trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, his invitation comes to you. If you are here this morning (or evening) searching for faith or filled with doubts, his invitation comes also to you too. Jesus’ arms are open wide to embrace you as you are. Come and discover him here.”

I am grateful that those of us who do believe, but are still searching for faith or even filled with doubts have been included all along. What if the miracle of faith is sparked in even one person because he or she was invited to come to Christ’s table with us? That is my prayer.
