President’s Report

Guest speaker this week was Lyn Hornsby representing Donwood Nursing Home. She gave us an historical

evolution of what now constitutes the Donwood complex which includes the capacity for various degrees

of care for our elderly citizens. Her visit was prompted by Lorraine Brodie who has now got her husband Ian

as a patient there. Over time Croydon Rotary Club has had a hands on relationship with the home since its

opening in 1990 and has contributed significantly financially. Lyn showed pride  that their institution was

on sound financial footing due to good governance by the board. She however opened the door for

Croydon Rotary to once again provide a helping hand if we wished to.

Contact this week with Allan Penman – Ringwood Rotary Club has now confirmed their offer for us

to join them in a pre Christmas Eastland promo role is alive. Shift details were given with a bottom line

offer of $2,500 for the Croydon club for 108 man hours – a return of $23 per hour. He asked for Club

confirmation which I will give, given show of support.

As of Thursday the 19th of September our raffle report is as follows. Disbursement of 100 books of 10 i.e.

1000 tickets has been reached. Significant quantities have been given to Croydon Lions and Matthew from

the Croydon Special Development School. All rotary members are also on board. The concluded sales equal

$1000 in 6 days.  The A4 coloured selling aids have been very beneficial for community members to take

books of 10 and sell them themselves.

Finally, a reminder to members for the coming week. Don’t forget the blue and white. Yes, it is a

committee night and you all have access to board deliberations from last week in the secure part of the

website. My observations are that you seem to be enjoying the discussion and decision making that your

committees create. The following week our aim is to grow our numbers and increase the fun.

Regards

David Ferres.

Rotary Four Way Test Speech Competition

On Wednesday night two Melba College students, Jed Toohey and Katie Smith participated in the Rotary 4 way test speech competition as Croydon representatives. They were 2 of 13 students representing 7 Rotary Clubs. Jed spoke on “amazing feats, friendships and the Olympic Games” and Katie titled hers “Education is for Life”. Both gave passionate presentations that showed great poise and knowledge of their content. Whilst we didn’t feature in the winner’s list, both students received some fantastic feedback and have indicated that they personally gained much from the experience. Marlene hosted the event fabulously and Edwina assisted as the time keeper. This post featuring Marlene and the students has gone ballistic in Facebook. With over 20 likes it is the best liked page we have ever had. Marlene you have a lot of friends out there. Check it out https://www.facebook.com/CroydonRotary

SYMBOLISIM IN THE ROTARY WHEEL

In 1923 the GEARED WHEEL with 24 cogs, 6 spokes and a keyway signifying a WORKING WHEEL was adopted as our INTERNATIONAL SYMBOL.

At the 1929 ROTARY CONVENTION the colours BLUE and GOLD were chosen as the OFFICIAL

ROTARY COLOURS.

Consider the SIGNIFICANCE of these SYMBOLS.

FIRST – THE COLOURS

A. BLUE.  Symbolises TRUTH, PIETY & SINCERITY. B. GOLD. This represents HONOUR & LOYALTY (If you were not a person of honour, you would  never be invited to become a Rotarian.  If you do not remain HONEST and LOYAL you will surely be asked to leave.  Such are the high standards of conduct required of every Rotarian.)

SECOND – THE ROTARY WHEEL

There are two kinds of wheel.

     1.IDLER (free) WHEEL

This wheel runs free on its axle and does NO WORK.

2. WORKING (fixed) WHEEL.      This is the KEYED,GEARED WHEEL, a symbol of an efficient,     Permanently WORKING WHEEL.     THIS IS THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL EMBLEM.     (Whether this was in the mind of the designer or not I cannot tell,       but the symbolism is there.)

LOOKING AT THE WHEEL Rotary International is the HUB of all our activities. Radiating from this HUB are SIX SPOKES. These remind us of the SIX CONTINENTS,  leading to the rim, which includes all the islands worldwide.  Thus, ROTARY circumnavigates the WORLD. There are FOUR SPACERS.  These remind us of the FOUR COLOURS OF PEOPLE, RED,  YELLOW, BLACK and WHITE –  All are of equal importance in the eyes of ROTARY. Superimposed are the words ROTARY INTERNATIONAL.

Page 7: The Chronicle Vol 41 13 - Rotary Club of Croydon & Montrose · Postal Address: P.O. Box 226 Croydon Victoria 3136 Meeting venue: Dorset Gardens Hotel Dorset Road Croydon Club President:

So, in essence we have ROTARY spreading throughout the world serving the needs of  ALL PEOPLES, no matter what their RACE, COLOUR or CREED ‐ A WORTHY IDEAL

INDEED!!  Circling the wheel are TWENTY FOUR GEAR TEETH. SIX TIMES FOUR = TWENTY‐ FOUR!! Covering the world! These teeth become symbolic of each ROTARY CLUB, working independently in its  district, but playing its part in the great ideal of  “SERVICE ABOVE SELF”.  THERE IS MORE. If we slip this ROTARY WHEEL on an axle, symbolising the WORLD and all the WORK  that needs to be done to make the world a better place, it needs a KEY to keep it in  place.   WHAT IS THE KEY TO IT BEING SUCCESSFUL?  YOU, THE INDIVIDUAL ROTARIAN ARE THE KEY!! WITHOUT YOU – THE WHEEL BECOMES ‐  JUST ANOTHER IDLER! (If you sometimes feel that you are just a little bit of grease in your club, remember  that wheels cannot turn freely without the aid of grease!) Isn’t it therefore important that you should wear the ROTARY BADGE at all times to  show other members of ROTARY who you are, and to the public at large that you are someone trying to SERVE  selflessly?  THEREFORE WEAR THE ROTARY BADGE AT ALL TIMES!

(No other badge can take its place, not even a PHF!)

THE ROTARY BADGE IDENTIFIES YOU AS A MEMBER OF OUR MARVELLOUS

ORGANISATION.

SHOW PEOPLE THAT YOU ARE PROUD TO BE A ROTARIAN.

Croydon Special Developmental School On June the 18th our guest speaker on the night was Matthew Harris who has been the Principal of Croydon Special Developmental School for over two years. The School needs some financial assistance to meet their ever increasing expectations and demands. Croydon Lions and the Rotary Club of Croydon have joined together in a fundraising exercise which will be the first of hopefully of many. Pictured is our first project, the raffle of a superb trailer from Michael's Trailers in Healesville. With the goodies on board the raffle prize will be in excess of $1500.00. Tickets at $5.00 are on sale and the trailer is on display at Arndale Lotto in the Arndale Shopping Centre Complex Mt Dandenong Road Croydon. The trailer is available for anyone to expose it for the promotion of the sale of raffle tickets. Through the efforts of some of the members of Croydon Lions, Bunnings have made a significant contribution to the raffle prize. The Esky, the wheel barrow and the Homelite Blower Vac have made the prize more desireable. It also gave the members of Lions the ability to sell the Raffle Tickets at their Bunning’s Sausage Sizzle. Blackburn Trailers have also thrown in a Trailer Security Lock to keep the trailer secured to the President’s vehicle. The Raffle will be drawn on the 17th of October at the Radio Eastern 98.1 studios in Hewish Road Croydon at 6.45 p.m. This is a short and sweet Raffle prior to our main Raffle in Nov/ Dec. Make it count!

IT HAS GOT TO BE PINK

One of the special projects that David Ferres and the crew from Arndale Lotto is

the Special Kids Project.  Last weekend the Special Kids were promoted at the

Arndale shopping complex.  The big Pink Pig money box turned up and the Lions

crew join forces to provide the sausage sizzle.  The Raffle trailer was on site as

well.

Overall a very successful day was achieved with a good income for the sausage

sizzle, donations and raffle ticket sales.

Who would believe this?        Croydon Lions Club in full swing.

Pegasus Hot Rod & Custom Club

Melbourne Cup Day Eastfield Road Croydon

Yes, it is on again, our biggest barbecue of the year. This is not just a “sausage sizzle” but a full blown gourmet banquet featured around eggs, bacon, onions, sausages and real white bread.

The social side of this event is amazing. Last year we had a ball feeding the masses and every one thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship.

Naturally, we are looking for volunteers. We asking also you to spread the word that we are going to be there.

PP Ross and Pat’s Adventure Continues Our travels continue, after Kakadu we headed to Darwin to catch up with some of the household chores, washing, cleaning, shopping etc. After a couple of days in and around Darwin we turned the vehicle in a southerly direction and started the long trek towards home. Our first stop along the way was Lichfield NP. At this time of the year, almost the end of the dry season, Lichfield is possibly more attractive than much of Kakadu. Lichfield has permanent water in the form of springs that feed the water falls and swimming places. We met many young people mostly from Europe having a part of their Australian experience here in Lichfield. The swimming and water holes acting like a magnet for these young people. A major difference between Lichfield and Kakadu is Kakadu has the wetlands which makes the parks different. After Lichfield NP we headed for Mataranka for a swim in the thermal pools, fortunately for us the palms were not in flower and hence the bats were feeding elsewhere. We had our experience with bats earlier in the trip whilst staying in Katherine and had no desire for a repeat performance. After Mataranka we went to Tennant Creek and Mt Isa. Roger Paul has told us about life in Mt Isa and for us it was an opportunity to meet up with some family and have a look around. Then it was off to Boulia and later Birdsville. Boulia, Bedorie and Birdsville are all located along the eastern edge of the Simpson Desert where the Desert meets the Channel Country. It is an interesting drive from Boulia to Birdsville, approximately 400 km, there is mile after mile of near straight road across what is essentially a flat desert plain. There is at least one hill along the route which is so unusual that there is a lookout on the top and despite the sign warning that the road to the lookout is unsuitable for caravans there were a number of vans there enjoying the view during our visit. Along the way one passes regions of Gibber Plains and good examples of the channel country with the channels very clearly visible between the slight rises on either side. At one stage the only colours one could see were the red of the Gibber Plains, the blue of the sky and the white of the unmade road base. Life in this region has been harsh and cruel to those who tried to make a living here with several sets of homestead ruins along the road, including one property owned by the beef baron Sir Sidney Kidman. Birdsville and south had an exciting series of electrical storms on Sunday evening from all reports. We were in Boulia, approximately 400 km north of Birdsville, on Sunday evening and consequently missed all the excitement. Monday and Tuesday have been very mild, temperature wise, here in Birdsville with temperatures in the very high 30's before the storm. The Birdsville Races were two weekends ago and Bedourie had their races, including camel races, last weekend. Both townships are now in 'recovery' mode. Last evening we dined at the famous Birdsville Hotel where the menu appears to have gone just a little more mainstream than before. Don't be too concerned Curried Camel Pies are still available both at the Hotel and the Coffee Shop. Since my last visit to Birdsville, just over 10 years ago the township appears to have grown with a significant number of new buildings, including the obligatory 'coffee shop'. The next townships we plan to visit include Innamincka and Tibooburra. Keep well and travel safe, Pat and Ross

A Jabaru looking for dinner in Kakadu NP

Clive is making a slow but steady progress.  We can see it but he has trouble appreciating the improvements in his condition, especially when he dwells on the long hard road ahead to get back to being his best.  Clive becomes discouraged easily at the moment and the best thing we can do for him is to keep his spirits up to encourage him rise to his daily challenges.  He really appreciates having visitors, particularly on the weekend when he is not receiving treatment or working hard at his rehabilitation tasks.  At present Clive is not getting much pleasure from reading or watching TV but he does enjoy watching his beloved Cats play, particularly during the current Finals series.  So, next Tuesday night is “Let’s Do it for Clive Night”.  Come along to Rotary dressed in Geelong colours or sporting a Geelong scarf or beanie.  We will take a group photo to send along to Clive so he can see that his Rotary friends are with him in spirit.  We might even have a go at singing the Geelong theme song.  If you don’t own, or cannot beg or borrow, any Geelong paraphernalia the discount shops in Main Street, Croydon still have stocks of Geelong scarves, beanies, balloons and feathers (I bought some today).  Clive is always ready to do whatever he can to support his fellow Rotarians and help anyone in trouble – let’s make an effort to send Clive our message of support for him.  So win, lose or draw on the weekend, we’ll put aside our own Club allegiance for just one night on Tuesday and LET’S DO IT FOR CLIVE!  Here are the words of the Geelong Club Song so you can practice and be ready for Tuesday night!

We are Geelong, the greatest team of all We are Geelong; we’re always on the ball We play the game as it should be played At home or far away Our banners fly high, from dawn to dark Down at Kardinia Park Jill Fletcher
