EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

AUGUST 4, 2019 Today’s readings invite us to reflect upon some of life’s deepest questions, and to explore the meaning of faith. We hear of the universal human search for meaning in our lives in the book of Ecclesiastes. In Luke’s Gospel, we hear Jesus’ parable about one who foolishly seeks ultimate security through the accumulation of wealth. In Colossians, faith in the crucified and resurrected Christ is proclaimed as the path to a richly purposeful and meaningful life. The path of Christian faith places our work, our sufferings, and our limitations within the larger picture of God’s purposes for all of us. In Jesus, God is revealed as our companion in human suffering and limitation. God’s love is at the center of a meaningful life. We place our trust in this loving God, who created us to share in this love, and to share this love with others.

WEALTH AND IDOLATRY In today’s Gospel passage from Luke, Jesus vividly demonstrates his concern about the dangers of wealth in the parable of the rich fool. The problem is not about saving for the future. The problem is revealed in the rich man’s language of self-absorption: it’s all about him. There is no gratitude or responsibility toward God or toward others. He seems to believe that he can secure his future by hoarding his wealth and possessions. It is a form of idolatry. Part of how we decide what gives life meaning is deciding who or what we serve. Who or what claims our primary energies and best efforts? Idolatry places one’s primary trust in something imagined or created, instead of God. Idolatry is a central theme discussed throughout the scriptures, and idolatry of wealth is no less a danger in modern times than it was in ancient days. Today’s Readings: Eccl 1:2; 2:21–23; Ps 90:3–4, 5–6, 12–13, 14, 17; Col 3:1–5, 9–11; Lk 12:13–21 (Worship Pgs. 1162).

ST. ANTHONY’S YOUTH GROUP LAUNCHES A SHOE AND CLOTHING DRIVE

Do you have used or new shoes that are just taking up space in your closet? Maybe they just don’t fit right or you replaced your shoes with a new pair or your children grew out of them. If so, we could use your shoes, sneakers, boots, or sandals. Men’s, women’s or children’s, we will take them all.

Do you have tons of clothes that you just are not wearing anymore? Maybe they are worn out, out of style, or you just don’t like them. We will also take any old clothes or other cloth items like sheets, pillows, and curtains. By donating your used, gently worn and new shoes and other clothing items to the youth group, these items will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives around the world. The items will be redistributed to a network of small businesses helping families in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Besides helping others and the environment, the youth group will benefit as well. The youth group will earn funds based on the total weight of the items collected. These proceeds will help defray costs for our pilgrimage/service trip to Rome in 2020. Help us to grow in our faith and serve others while doing so. All donations will be collected August 18th 7:30am-2pm by the annex. If you would still like to donate, but are unavailable that weekend please contact Stephanie at (845)641-1730. If you have any questions please email us at [email protected]. Thank you for your support!

THE RACHEL MINISTRY Every 20 seconds an unborn child is aborted in the United States. In the 30 years since Roe vs. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand, the death toll has reached over 55 million. But the statistics do not document the other casualties: the mothers, fathers, grandparents and friends who are emotionally and spiritually affected. The Rachel ministry is a CONFIDENTIAL ministry for those scarred by abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth. Come and heal every third Monday of the month at the Marian Shrine in the Cafeteria Building in West Haverstraw, at 7:00pm. The next meeting is on August 20th. For more information call 845-429-2077 or the Marian Shrine at 845-947-2200.

Tell Father that you want to talk with a counselor. He will contact the appointment desk on your behalf and then you can call and arrange your first visit. If interested please call 1-866-962-7487.

NY Times said about the GODSPELL Broadway Revival: “The new production asserts from its first moments that this is not your alma mater’s “Godspell.” On the contrary, it insists, with an eagerness that soon begins to grate, that the story of Jesus and his apostles is so timely you’d better start tweeting about it right this minute.” Auditions for casting are July 22 and 23 and many roles are double cast so there are opportunities for leads and solos. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Apart from the period from Thanksgiving through Christmas, the summer is a favored time for family reunions. We trace family trees and recall our origins. Worship has a family tree as well, and the way we celebrate today has been influenced by various styles and customs through the centuries. We are Western Christians of the Latin Rite. By far, we are the most numerous Western Christians, but there are other ritual families as well. The Archdiocese of Milan in Italy follows the Ambrosian Rite, Toledo in Spain preserves the Mozarabic Rite and the Arab language, and Lyons in France is home to the Gallican Rite. Other liturgical families, such as the Celtic in Ireland and the Sarum in England, faded away after the Reformation. Until recent times, members of some ancient religious orders such as Carmelites and Trappists followed a pattern of Mass that varied slightly from the plan observed in Latin Rite parishes. Isn’t the Catholic Church the same everywhere? Not at all. It never has been! The existence of so many liturgical families in the West reminds us that unity, not uniformity, is what the Church seeks to achieve among her children. We are united in faith, but wonderfully diverse in rituals, ceremonies, languages, customs, and spirituality
