22 JUL (Tuesday):SAINT MARY MAGDALENIt is clear from the Gospels that Mary of Magdala was a devoted

disciple. We know that Christ cast from her seven devils, that she ministered to Him in Galilee, and that she was present at the Crucifixion. Matthew tells us that she was the first to see the Risen Christ, Who sent her to tell His disciples what she had seen. She is traditionally regarded as a penitent.

21 JUL (Monday):SAINT LAWRENCE OF BRINDISI, Priest and Doctor of the Church (1559-1619)St. Lawrence was a Capuchin and theologian who became famous throughout Europe for his inspi-rational preaching, his work against Luteranism, and the founding of several friaries. He helped raise an army that successfully drove back the Turks from Hungary, and was often called upon to settle disputes among the European monarchies.

25 JUL (Friday):SAINT JAMES (“THE GREATER”), ApostleJames and his younger brother, John, sons of Zebedee, were fisher-

men of Galilee when called by Jesus to follow Him. James was present at most of the miracles performed by Christ, and the two brothers, along with Peter, were the only disciples to witness the Transfiguration. James, the first apostle to be martyred, was put to death by Herod around the year 42.

23 JUL (Wednesday):SAINT BRIGIDA OF SWEDEN, Religious (1302-1373)Daughter of the governor of Uppland and descended from the royal house of Sweden, Bridget began receiving visions, most of the Crucifixion, at age 7. She wed Prince Ulfo of Nercia at age 13 and raised 8 children, including Saint Catherine of Sweden. She pursued a religious life after her husband’s death in 1344, and founded the Order of the Most Holy Savior (Bridgettines). She was a counselor to kings, queens, and popes, and encouraged everyone to meditate on the Passion, and of Jesus Crucified.

24 JUL (Thursday):SAINT CHARBEL MAKHLOUF, Monk (1828-1898)A model Baladite monk (Maronite), he dreamed of living like the ancient desert fathers. Hermit from 1875 until his death 23 years later, living on the bare minimums of everything. Gained a reputation for holiness, and was much sought for counsel and blessing. He had a great personal devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, and was known to levitate during his prayers.

26 JUL (Saturday):SAINTS ANN AND JOACHIM, Parents of MaryWe know nothing about Mary’s parents except what we can infer from Mary’s own life -- she was devout, gener-ous, able to recognize God when He called, and courageous enough to accept God’s call without knowing where it would lead. She must have had exceptional parents. They are mentioned in the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James, which speaks of the life of Mary and her elderly, well-to-do parents, Joachim and Anna.

Calendar of NovenasTHE DEVOTION OF THE NOVENA

A novena is a devotion consisting of prayer said (most typically) on nine successive days, asking to obtain special graces. The prac-tice of saying a novena is derived from Scripture. Upon Jesus’ Ascension into heaven, He told His disciples to pray together in the upper room and devote themselves to constant prayer (Acts 1:14). The Apostles, Blessed Virgin Mary, and other followers of Jesus prayed together for nine consecutive days, concluding on Pentecost. Novena prayers are considered to be especially ef-ficacious when the novena immediately precedes the saint’s feast day (begin the novena so that the ninth day is the day just prior to the feast day).

ST. PETER’S SQUARE (Sunday, 06 July 2014)Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning! In this Sunday’s Gospel, we find Jesus’ invitation: “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Mt 11:28). When Jesus says this, he has before him the people he meets every day on the streets of Galilee: very many simple people, the poor, the sick, sinners, those who are marginalized.... These people always followed him to hear his word — a word that gave hope! Jesus’ words always give hope! — and even just to touch a hem of his garment. Jesus himself sought out these tired, worn out crowds like sheep without a shepherd (cf. Mt 9:35-36), and he sought them out to proclaim to them the Kingdom of God and to heal many of them in body and spirit. Now he calls them all to himself: “Come to me”, and he promises them relief and rest. : : : : :Let us invoke Mary Most Holy, who welcomes under her mantle all the tired and worn out people, so that through an enlightened faith, witnessed in life, we can offer relief for so many in need of help, of tenderness, of hope.

Today’s Gospel is sometimes referred to as the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares. The “tare” that Jesus described in this parable was also known as the darnel seed, which looks almost exactly like wheat in the beginning stages of its growth. But after it grows a little more, it becomes evident that it is a weed, and it actually uproots the wheat. The two are hard to tell apart until very close to har-vest time, and if you do mistakenly eat the seeds of a tare, you’ll get quite sick.

PRAYER OF ST. GERTRUDE THE GREATOur Lord revealed to St. Gertrude that the following prayer

would release 1000 souls from Purgatory each time it was said.

“Eternal Father, I offer You the Most Precious Blood of Your Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the

Universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.”
