April 6– “Spring Cleaning: Envy” Philippians 4:11-13 This week we conclude our series on Spring Cleaning (the things we should be cleaning from our lives). Envy is one of those things listed in both the Ten Commandments and the Seven Deadly Sins.

Bites of Bread from Bob I don’t know how to string enough superlatives to-gether to describe March 30. People came from far and wide to give Allison Pfaff (retiring Business Administrator) their well wishes. The music of six pianos and the sounds of professional saxophone player Collin Wilson brought worship alive. We were successful in keeping the secret (at least from Allison) that Chuck & Penny Shorow were here to help celebrate. Chuck inspired us from the pulpit.

Following worship a record number of vol-unteers did service for our community at 10 different sites. We had so many people at some sites there was not enough work to go around. A great problem to have.

JD & Arty Day pulled together a fantastic lunch and crew to feed a group of around 250 people that gath-ered to celebrate Allison’s retirement and birthday. She was surprised by the world’s longest prayer shawl and the generosity of our congregation that gave (to date) $8,003 for wells in Africa in her honor.

Easter Offering The Easter Offering supports the General Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and is being received on Easter Sunday, April 20.

General Ministries serve across the U.S. and Canada and around the world. General Ministries are partners in ministry serving through far-reaching and unique organizations.

General ministries that receive support from the Easter Offering include: • Central Pastoral Office for Hispanic Ministries • Church Extension • Council on Christian Unity • Disciples of Christ Historical Society • Disciples Home Missions • Division of Overseas Ministries/Global Ministries • Higher Education and Leadership Ministries • National Benevolent Association • National Convocation • North American Pacific/Asian Disciples • Pension Fund

This means that over 1,500 people will now be able to have safe, clean drinking water.

To top it all off, the Trail Blazers provided a victory over the Grizzlies. A group from the church traveled with Allison to the game Sunday evening.

Allison is now on her road trip to visit family and friends. We send with her our prayers and best wishes. May she always know how much she is loved by this congregation

for all she has given of herself. When she returns, she anticipates still being at the doors to greet you with a warm smile and a hug and volunteering around the church at a schedule much more leisurely than she has had in the last 19 years.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Michelle Gorman and I attended the Northwest Min-istry Conference in Seattle this past weekend. Ten workshops in two days was intense but well worth it.

A common theme in many of the workshops I attend- ed was how to welcome our children. How many adults in our church know our children? How family-friendly is our Sanctuary or our worship services? Does our church include children (for more than entertainment purposes) or are children to be seen and not heard? Do we value their worship time? These were questions we faced throughout the week-end. One statement a speaker made could apply to everyone: “If they can’t be accepted at church, what hope do they have in the world?” Another speaker talked about the small church he attended as a child. The children were taught that the preacher was too busy and important to be disturbed by them. Later, his family moved to a much larger church and when the minister spoke to him directly, using his name, he was shocked. That minister always put children first because he was approachable, like our Pastor Bob. The speaker said he became a minister himself because of that pastor. In another workshop we were asked if the adults get down on kids’ levels and use their names, or do our children only see the holes of adult noses as they strain to look up?

During a workshop about the love languages we use, we learned that many churches approach faith as a subject instead of a relationship. Children will develop a relationship with Jesus when they see us model our own relationships with Him and not just lecture them about Him. My prayer is that children who come into our church are welcomed by all and learn the love of Jesus by what we do, not just by what we say. Teaching is more than words. Showing our children how much they are valued will reach more than if we just tell them.

Jesus said, “Let the children come…” and He em-braced them and blessed them.

Ramblings from Riane When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. (Romans 12:13)

This week in my Women’s Daily Devotional, Paul described in Romans 12 what it really means to give ourselves to God. He can use us as tools to be de-voted to loving others, to serve Him, to be faithful in prayer, and to practice hospitality. As Christians, it is important to recognize the outsiders, the strangers, the newcomers and to make them feel accepted, wel-come, and comfortable. In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, hospitality has been a prac-tice of God’s people. Not only should we practice hospitality in our church but in our own homes as well.

Over spring break, the youth group had a great time on the Youth Fun Day! We went to the Kroc Center and then out to dinner as a group. Nothing says bonding like food and fun!

For the month of April, we have Silverton Regional Prom the 5th-6th and youth group the 6th, 13th, and 27th. I am looking for volunteers to provide lunch for the youth on those days. Please contact me if that is something you are interested in doing.

During this week, keep youth in your prayers as they return to school after Spring Break.

All of us have been touched by this disease (or will be) within our families, among friends, or within our larger Church family. Come for information and understanding; come for physical, emotional and spiritual support. Mission to Ecuador Information The mission trip dates are July 10 - 22. We will again be working through FEDICE, a local mission organization.

In the past we assisted them in building a church, classrooms, community buildings and a

childcare center. They have a children’s Bible study on each of the trips. The work can be varied and scaled to meet any person’s skill or physical needs.

The indigenous people do all the leading and skilled work. We are there to assist them as needed.

OH, YOU BEAUTIFUL DOLL… A Doll Style Show and Luncheon

Saturday, May 3 12:00 pm, Fellowship Hall

Sponsored by the Christian Women’s Fellowship

Dolls of many styles and time-frames will be shown; memories and stories

shared. We will have special music (about dolls, of course!) and a delicious light luncheon.

WE NEED YOUR HELP: If you have a special doll you would like to loan, please pick up a sign-up card at the Information Center or from your CWF group leader, fill it out and turn it in to Anna Russell by April 1 or as soon as possible. Dolls on loan will need to be brought to the Fellowship Hall Friday before the event (May 2).

Tickets are $6 each and will be available starting Sunday, April 6.

Palm Sunday April 13 A grand celebration of Jesus’ entry into the city of Jerusalem. Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service April 17 — 7:30 pm, Sanctuary On Maundy Thursday we will celebrate with communion, candles and music as we remember Christ’s last meal with his disciples and his passion and death on the cross. The Service of Tenebrae (Shadows) originates from the 4th century.

24-Hour Prayer Vigil Noon, April 17 - Noon, April 18 You are asked to consider giving 30 minutes of prayer (either at church or at home). Sign-ups will be at the Information Center.

Good Friday Service April 18 — 12:00 pm, Chapel A brief service of reflection in remembrance of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross on our behalf in the Chapel.

Flowers for the Easter Cross Please bring fresh cut flowers from your yard so we can transform the cross. You may bring flowers to the church on Saturday, April 19, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm or Sunday, April 20, from 8:30-9:15 am. Thank you! Providing and Serving Easter Breakfast at Union Gospel Mission Sunday, April 20 — 5:00-8:30 am Easter is coming and we need your help to share God’s love and joy of His resurrection with Salem. We are recruiting volunteers and asking for donations for a sunrise breakfast project at Union Gospel Mission. For the fifth year, we will provide breakfast for around 200 men and women on Easter morning. Sign-ups and donations all need to be received by April 15.
