Super Bowl Party & Potluck Sunday, February 2

Chapman University Singers Free Concert Friday, January 31

7:30 pm in the Sanctuary

This 34-voice ensemble of men and women is Chapman’s top choir. They have a wide choral repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to more modern composi-tions. Chapman University is in Orange, California and is a Disciples of Christ affiliated university.

Valentine’s Day Dinner and Dance Friday, February 14

We are having a Valentine’s Day fundraiser for Mission to Mexico. Tickets are being pre-sold after each service for $15 or can be purchased for $20 at the door. You have a choice of chicken or stuffed pork loin for dinner. Childcare will be provided and youth will be serving.

We will be taking song requests for the dance. You may do so at the time of pur-chasing your ticket or place your song selection on the bulletin board near the Chapel.

Bites of Bread from Bob Last week Julie received an e-mail from Discover that read:

“Dear Valued Customer,

We detected irregular activity on your Discover Card.

As the Primary Contact, you must verify your account activity before you can continue using your card, and upon verification, we will re-move any restrictions placed on your account.

To review your account as soon as possible, please

click on the link below to verify your information. If your account information is not updated within 48 hours then your ability to access your account will be restricted.

We appreciate your prompt attention to this impor-tant matter.”

With reserving a venue for a rehearsal dinner for Tyler’s wedding and making travel plans for an upcoming trip, we had made more than our usual charges on the account. Initially, we thought we had better respond promptly so it would not restrict any of our planning. But we quickly began to think about all the identity theft that has been going on and asked ourselves, “How do we know this really came from Discover Card?” Even though there was a link on the e-mail that looked legitimate, how would we know we were actually going to a real Discover Card site?

Wisely, Julie pulled out our Discover card, called the number on the back for customer service, and told the representative about the e-mail. After reading it to him, he knew immediately that it was not from

Discover. First of all, they would not have addressed it, “Dear Valued Customer,” and second of all, they would have included the last four digits of our account number. He stated that this e-mail was what they call “phishing.” It is an attempt to lure you to a

site where you give personal informa-tion that can then be used to steal your identity.

This should be a warning to us all

that even when we receive e-mails that look as if they are trying to help us, they can be a trap. That is an important message we need to remember, but it also contains a spiritual message. Many times temptation comes to us in the same form. It comes to us looking as if it is something that is good. If temptation always came to us in a red cape, horns and carrying a pitch fork, we might be able to easily avoid it. More often than not it comes to us as something desirable. If we give in to that temptation, like the email, it will often try to steal our identity as a spe-cial, loved child of God.

The e-mail addressed Julie as “Dear Valued Cus-tomer” and knew nothing more than her e-mail address. God, on the other hand, not only knows you but created you. Luke 12:7 reads, “even the hairs of your head are all counted.” What God calls us to do is not to steal our identity, but to live into the identity that is at the core of our being.

Allison Pfaff’s Retirement On March 30 Allison will be retiring after serving our congregation as Business Administrator. While that has been her official title, she has been so much more to us than that. Over the 19 years that she has served this congregation she has added more and more to her responsibilities. We will not be able to replace her. She has become a friend and confidante to many of us.

The Personnel Committee has been struggling to figure out how we will fill all of the holes Allison's retirement will leave. We have determined a course of action. We will be looking to hire a Business Administrator that will work Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 20-28 hours a week and a person who will carry the responsibility of Welcome/Hospitality.

We have completed the job description for the Business Administrator and have posted it on Craig's List. (Job description is available in the church office.) We hope to fill this position by March 1.

We have yet to complete the job description for the Welcome/Hospitality position nor have we specified the number of hours expected.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Using metaphors teaching as Jesus did, can be tricky sometimes because children tend to be more literal. Recently we had a lesson from Matthew 5 about be-coming “fishers of people” I thought it would be fun to have my friend bring her fishing gear to share lures and other fishing items they use to catch fish. While planning the lesson, she brought up the fact that this can be confusing to children because we “trap” fish, but Jesus doesn’t trap people. We were able to avoid this confusion by showing the different lures that at-tract the fish. We said that we don’t trap people, but that Jesus wants people to choose to follow him, and it’s up to us to live in a way to make that attractive. We can be “shiny” like some of the lures by sharing the love of Jesus. Then we had them name ways their actions can be shiny like Jesus.

That great discussion led to this question from a small child: “How does Jesus light the world? Is there a light inside of him?” Ah, another common metaphor. “His light is the love in his heart,” we explained. “When we show love to others, we are spreading his light.” The next week, I was able to follow up on that subject by asking the children how we spread Jesus’ light. That 6-year-old was the first to answer: “By being loving and caring!” We were then able to share creative prayer ideas by looking at times when our lights don’t shine, as when we are crabby. Each of the children wrote their own prayers to help in those situations.

I love it when discussions lead to discovery, espe-cially in my own heart. Is your light shining or under a basket? (Matthew 4:21)

Ramblings from Riane “You are the salt of the Earth.” –Matthew 5:13

This past weekend the high school youth ventured up to Hood River Valley Christian Church for a week-end of fun fellowship at Snow Rally. The theme for this year was “You are the salt of the Earth.” Be-tween the bowling, the games, and the tubing, we had keynote speakers and small group time that discussed what it meant to be “the salt of the Earth” and how we could be salt to others as Jesus was.

On Sunday, January 26, the youth will be delivering calendars to those who have Alzheimer’s with Kim Resch during youth group time. Anyone who is in-terested is welcome to join us.

Friday, January 31, Chapman University will be having a concert at our church. This is a great way for youth to get acquainted with a Disciples’ college. We will attend the concert as a youth group and gather for dessert afterwards!

There will be no youth group on Sunday, February 2. Instead, come watch the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks play in the Super Bowl at the church! There will be food, games, and even a half-time show! It will be fun for the whole family!

Mid-winter Rally for middle school youth will be happening Saturday, February 15 – Sunday, February 16! Forms are in the youth room and are due no later than Sunday, February 9. We will be meeting at the church around 9:00 am for a 9:15 am departure. I am looking for youth sponsors to attend this event as chaperones. Please contact me if interested. Also, there will be no youth group Sunday, February 16.

Spiritually Speaking - Alzheimer’s Support Group Please join us on the fourth Thursday of the month for our Spiritually Speaking Alzheimer’s Dementia Support Group.

All of us have been touched by this disease, or will be, within our families, among friends, or within our larger Church family. Come for information and understanding; come for physical, emotional and spiritual support. Come with questions and concerns and leave with answers and tools for Caregiving and supporting our loved-ones affected by Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

ALL ARE WELCOME!! (Facilitated by Pastor Bob Hanna, Scott Lichtenstein, NTS and Christy Turner, CDP of Golden Lifecare Solutions, a Geriatric Care Management Company.)

Recent and ongoing topics of education and discussion have been: • Alzheimer’s 101 • Caregiver, Care for Thyself! • Driving, Financial Protection, and Home Safety for People with Dementia • Estate Planning 101 • Continuing to Experience Moments of Love, Depth and the Sacred with Our Family Member who has Dementia
