Take-Away

• What: Systems are omnipresent/ubiquitous

• Why: Humankind has a responsibility

• How: INCOSE

System Definition

8

• A system is composed of interconnected parts that as a whole exhibit one or more emergent properties not

obvious from the properties of the individual parts

System Characteristics

9

• System Characteristics

o It comprises an integrated, defined set of subordinate system elements

o It has a defined boundary

o It’s properties arise from interactions among system elements

o It has an emergent behaviour

o It provides function/utility to the environment within which it

exists

o System utility > ∑ system element utilities

o It can be simple, complicated, complex or chaotic

o It can exist at any scale

o It has a life cycle

Scale of Systems

System of Systems

11

• A System of Systems (SoS) is a system where the components are systems on their own

• SoS Characteristics

o the system components can operate independently

o the components may have different life cycles

o the initial SoS requirement are likely ambiguous

o complexity is a major issue

o fuzzy boundaries cause confusion

o SoS engineering is never finished

What is SE?

SE is a discipline that concentrates on the design and application of the whole (the system, irrespective of

size) as distinct from the parts. It involves looking at a problem (the requirement) in its entirety, taking into

account all facets and all variables and relating the social to the technical aspect

SE is an inter-disciplinary approach and means to enable the realisation of successful systems

Why SE?

14

• Systems are becoming more complex

– Technology

– Interconnectedness (SoS)

• Systems have long life cycles, so must be designed

with that in mind:

– Requirements stemming from shortcomings and new opportunities

– Design & Develop

– Manufacture & Integrate

– Commissioning

– Through-life support

Take-Away

• What: Systems are omnipresent

• Why: Humankind has a responsibility

• How: INCOSE

SE a Social Responsibility

• We’re inextricably immersed in systems – every action has a reaction

• The economy is a SoS – we cannot afford inefficient and failing systems

• Social and Engineered systems exploit Natural systems – we must ensure efficiency and sustainability

We leave a legacy….

what shall it be?

Systems Engineering Professional Certification

• INCOSE Certification provides a formal method for recognizing the knowledge and experience

of systems engineers

• INCOSE established a multi-level Systems

Engineering Professional (SEP) Certification Program to recognize systems engineers,

regardless of where they may be in their career:

– Entry to early career: Associate SEP (ASEP)

– Mid-level: Certified SEP (CSEP)

– Senior: Expert SEP (ESEP)
