Sunday 27th October

On the last Sunday of October the clocks ‘fall back’. They go back by one hour. It may feel like a long time since the blue skies of summer, but this marks the end of British Summer Time (BST). The good news is that this will mean an extra hour in bed.

Clocks on smart phones should update themselves automatically, but older analogue clocks need changing manually.

The Clock Tower and Church clocks will certainly need someone to climb up the towers to manually change the time. - and for many years that someone has been Raymond Mason.

The Doddington Diary is now two years old - See Page 2 for our

plans for the future.

Dear Residents of Doddington

October marks the end of our second year and we believe that our community magazine has become an important part of village life.

Birthdays are a time when we look back at our achievements. We know that many people look forward to reading the Diary to find out what everyone has been doing, so keep us informed of your planned events and let us know how they went!. The more people contribute to the content – the more interesting it is for everyone,

Birthdays are also a time when we look forward and make plans for the future. We would like to “grow” the Diary by adding more local interest stories and features - but we also need to know what you want to see in the Diary. We will be at the switching on of the Christmas lights on Saturday 7th December, so come and see us and complete once of our surveys.

We are proud to say that we deliver over 1,000 free copies of the Diary every month. This would be a good time to thank the advertisers without whom the Diary would simply not exist. However, we do not receive any money from any other sources, so if we are to add more stories we have to raise the money to cover the printing costings ourselves. We have therefore arranged some fundraising events which are:-.

• BINGO. This will be held on Friday 1st November, at March United Services Club eyes down at 7.30pm. Posters will be around the village.

• We will deliver your Christmas Cards (in the village only - between the white gates that mark the entrance and exit to the village!) 20p per card.

• TABLE at the switching on of the Christmas lights - bring us your cards for delivery and don’t forget the survey. We will also be pleased to accept your donations.

We look forward to meeting you and hearing your comments. We hope that you share our excitement for the future of the Diary. Thank you for your support. The Doddington Diary Team

It was David Edwards of Doddington who won £10. Well done David! Quiz answers can be found on notice boards outside St Mary’s Church, the Church Rooms, and in the window of the newsagents on High street. Thank you to every one who participated.

The Rector, Churchwardens and Parochial Church Council would like to thank everyone who gave of their time, talents and expenditure at the Flower Festival. So many people volunteered in so many ways to make the event such a success. We would also like to thank the visitors for their lovely comments and donations and particularly the generosity of everyone who returned the donation envelopes delivered with the Doddington Diary.

DODDINGTON & VILLAGES UNDER 5’S GROUP UPDATE

WE NEED NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS Due to a number of our little ones starting pre-school our committee has taken a bit of a hit. We are extremely low on numbers and without new recruits the future of our community group looks uncertain! It would be a real shame to close when we have been running since the 1980’s!

As a committee member we just ask you to commit to opening up once a month. Our committee get free equipment hire of anything in our hall for your special events and sessions are free when you help open up.

We are a COMMUNITY group running for the COMMUNITY of Doddington and surrounding villages. So we need our COMMUNITY onboard! Let’s keep our little group open for the children of the village, we are entering exciting times with a number of grants being applied for and accepted it would be such a shame for all our funds and resources to have to be donated elsewhere because we are forced to close.

Please send us a message on our Facebook page or email [email protected] if you are interested or come to our meeting at The George Thursday 7th November 2019 7pm.

LIONEL WALDEN PRIMARY SCHOOL

We had much to look forward to in the Summer Term – several sporting events were enjoyed including our annual Sports Afternoon which saw pu-pils taking part in a range of races – flat races, obstacle, skipping, egg and spoon, sack race, ball-in-hoop, tunnel ball, long distance and relay. We also organised and hosted the Inter-Village Schools’ Sports Afternoon for five local schools with Lionel Walden being overall winners.

The Life Education Centre (a mobile classroom) was on site for a week and provided the opportunity for all classes, parents and governors to find out more about healthy lifestyles as part of our Personal, Social and Health Education. Our Year Six pupils took part in the Bikeability programme; trained instructors taught pupils about road safety and how to ride their bicycles safely. Our Walk to School/Road Safety Week, which is held twice a year, encouraged pupils and parents to walk to school to reduce traffic congestion and pollution whilst increasing levels of exercise.

A highlight of the Summer Term was International Week – this is an an-nual event when each class and Pre-School study a country in detail. This included looking at geographical features, local history, learning some of the language, culture and customs, dance, art – and lots of cooking and sampling of traditional foods! The displays along the corridors showcase the fantastic work which was completed.

The Lionel Walden School Association continued to raise additional funds for the school through the Summer Fair, cake stalls and the Father’s Day Shop. These events are very much enjoyed by the children; we thank everyone involved for their hard work in organising the events and all those who support them in any way.

As a school, we are very proud to be part of the community and particularly enjoy participating in the village Carnival. All classes, including our Pre-School, contributed to the making of the compo-nents for our ‘Brazil’ float with staff assembling it on the evening prior to the Carnival. Many of our pupils were pleased to be able to be part of the procession either on our float, the School Association’s ‘France’ float or other groups’ floats. Well done to the Carnival and Sports Committee!

We are very pleased with the developments that have taken place within our school grounds. Successful bidding for funding from the Burnthouse Farm Wind Farm Community Benefit Scheme and also from the Ransonmoor Environment Fund have enabled us to complete separate projects which have enhanced our outdoor provision. Our Science Garden has been transformed and now has a self-sustaining pond with viewing deck, a wild flower area with bug hotels, a vegetable patch and a wooden seating area. We also have two pods which have created shade and shelter from the seasons; water butts have been added and provide the water for the vegetable patch. These pods are used by groups of children for outdoor, environmental learning.

We have now returned to school for the Autumn Term and are looking forward to another exciting term ahead. If anyone would like further information on admission to our Pre-School, or the school, please contact the School Office on 01354-740405.

The gardens around the village are hanging on to their summer colour and we would like to thank all the volunteers who kept the pots watered through the dry

weather. Village resident, Joan Hall recently passed away at the grand age of 101 and we have been pleased to receive some planters in her memory which will be placed at the Clock Tower. All of the beautiful displays around the village would not be possible without the kind donations of plants from Delfland Nurseries, so once again we would

like to say a big ‘thank you to them on behalf of the whole village

Doddington Christmas Lights We were very lucky to have recently received the most votes in the Tesco’s Bags of Help in the March store and have consequently been awarded £4,000, which will go towards improving our Christmas lights display. We would like to thank everyone who voted for us with their blue tokens. September’s Yard Sale was a great success, with over 40 households taking part. The weather made a big difference and hopefully tempted the buyers to “take a look”. The Committee would like to thank everyone who held a stall, every penny raised will go towards the display of Christmas lights. The George have been donating a percentage of their Thursday evening quiz profits to the Christmas lights, for which we are very grateful. So please treat yourself to an evening out at the pub and feel good in the knowledge you are helping to support a fantastic village event. The envelopes which were enclosed in last month’s Diary have been collected. If we missed you, you can take your donation to One Stop Shop or Doddington Newsagents who are kindly accepting donations on behalf of Christmas lights. Thank you to everyone who has donated. Much preparation is underway for the big event itself on Saturday 7th December. This is set to be a fantastic “Switch On” and with over 60 stalls booked, there will be something to interest everyone.

SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB

A packed Village Hall of over 100 people supported this year’s charity Hog Roast and Race Night. Once again MAGPAS were the chosen charity and two of their volunteers were welcomed as guests on the night. The support of local businesses and the community attending the event made the evening a huge success, raising a record £1,207.53. MAGPAS are a local charity who provide life saving care by land or air whose mission is to save lives and reduce disability by taking specialist emergency medical care to patients in their moment of need. Also thank you to Andy Rose and his team for providing the meal and to Dave Lines of Soar Valley Race Nights.

Club chairman Rob Elmore said “It’s fantastic to see so many people enjoying them-selves, some won a few races others were not so lucky. We appreciate the support of all of our sponsors, especially Doddington Fish Bar who helped us raise a fantastic amount of money for MAGPAS”.

1st Doddington Scout Group

The summer months have been busy for the Scout Groups – lots of camps have taken place…!

In late July some of our Scouts attended CamJam – a week long International Jamboree at Huntingdon Racecourse for Scouts and Guides that takes place every 4 years. They attended along with approx. 1500 other Young People from across the county, the UK and some international groups too! We saw Bear Grylls (Chief Scout), and our Scouts had the opportunity to take part in multiple activities each day ranging from water activities, scuba diving, wood turning, archery, tomahawk throwing, it’s a knockout, zorbing….to name just a few! Some of our group were also included in an ITV news broadcast! It was a very busy and fun packed week, and a great opportunity for our Scouts to try new experiences and meet other Scouts and Guides.

In August some of our Cubs, a couple of Scouts, and one of our Beaver scouts attended “Blow Your Socks Off” – a week long camp in Buckinghamshire at a Scout Activity Centre along with several other groups – another week filled with lots of new experiences for our young people. 200m long zip wires, bushcraft, climbing, rifle shooting, mini-diggers, abseiling, and a cavebus were some of the many activities. Leaders were able to take part too!

And then….in September we held a Group Camp near Stamford. There were 50 of us camping, and all our young people took part in some water activities – sailing, rowing, rafting and stand up paddleboarding. Some even stood on a sunken “pirate” island! A fabulous experience for all our young people to try new things and meeting members from the other sections and working together.

What’s next….well, in October we are holding a joint Activity Day with Doddington and Manea Guiding sections as well as all our Young People. We are running about 18 different activities including having a cavebus, archery, DIY and craft activities, team and individual challenges, changing a car wheel/repairing a bicycle puncture…and we are challenging our Young People to try at least 12 of the activities on the day. We are also using the opportunity to fundraise by seeking sponsorship for taking part in the challenge of trying 12 of the activities.

Contact us if you would like to become a volunteer with the group, or you have a child interested in joining. [email protected] / www.facebook.com/DoddingtonScouts

100 Club Last month’s meeting was an afternoon tea of salad and cheesecake served by Derrick and his staff which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A trip to Sandringham and Hunstanton also took place in September.

A Quiz is planned for the next meeting on 17th October and our next outing will be to Peterborough on 19th November. The outings are open to everyone, please contact Angela on 740300 for more details.

Village Walk The Village Walk takes place on the 1st Tuesday of every month.

In September, local historian, David Edwards gave a talk during a walk around the village and church pointing out lots of village features. The walk was very popular and enjoyed by 25 walkers.

This month, we meet on 1st October at the bench opposite the gold postbox at 10.15am. Please join us, everyone welcome, our walks are suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

DODDINGTON SPORTS AND CARNIVAL COMMITTEE

For many, Carnival Day is one of the highlights of the village calendar, but it takes us the whole year to raise the funds and make the necessary preparations for the big day.

One of our biggest events is the Santa Run. This is a magical time of year when we are very fortunate to have Santa ride around the village to say hello to all of the children, but this fundraising event needs lots of man power to be successful.

During the year we also hold smaller events with a summer Disco when we select the Carnival Prince and Princess and a Presentation evening to celebrate all of the winners and thank everyone for taking part.

Like most committees, the members come and go and we really need some more help. There would be something for everyone to do, no matter what your skills. We need people with new ideas, but we also need a bit of brawn to help put up the bunting. We need people who are happy to attend regular committee meetings, but also lots of volunteers to help in the run up and on Carnival Day itself. Infact, we need all the help we can get if we are to keep putting on what is widely acknowledged as “the best Carnival for miles around!”.

Visit our Facebook page or website - www.doddingtoncarnival.co.uk for more information - or telephone Jason on 07980 795398 - or better still come along to our AGM which will be held on Tuesday 1st October at 8pm at the Church Room (opposite Tessa’s Hair Salon). Don’t be shy - we do have lots of fun along the way! We look forward to welcoming some new people to our group.

Sally Shortland welcomed members to the September meeting and Gemma Watts read the minutes of the previous meeting. A reminder was given that the Centennial Competition for a homemade beverage will be judged at the October meeting. Arrangements were made for the visit to the Amazon Fulfilment Centre at Peterborough.

The speaker for the evening was Hannah Padfield from the NFU. She gave a very interesting and informative talk of how British farming (especially in Cambridgeshire) produces food for our supermarkets, etc. She also spoke about other things which were made from the waste products. She brought samples of grains for members to guess what they were and what they were used for. Hannah was thanked by Shelley Underhill.

Refreshments were served by Marina Heslop and Janine Woodhams. The competition was 'S' for 'Sweets' and the winners were Brenda MacKenzie and Marina Heslop with 20 points each. There were five raffle winners.

Next month's meeting will have John Craythorne talking about Stars and Galaxies. If it is a clear night, bring a warm coat so that the night sky can be explained. The competition will be 'T' for 'Teapot'. Visitors are always welcome, ring Gemma Watts (740751) for details.

HALLOWEEN

31st October can be a night of fun for children who carve pumpkins and dress up to go door-to door ‘trick or treating’ - but for some people it can be a genuinely scary time of year.

Police advise that while many householders are happy to hand over sweets or other presents to children, it’s important to remember that “not everybody wants strangers knocking on their door”. To prevent this happening an official poster is available for people to display in their window asking groups not to call - you can display this Diary!

We want you to have fun at Halloween but stay safe:• Ensure children are accompanied by a responsible adult• Only knock at houses where you know you will be welcome• Respect any ‘no trick-or-treating’ notices displayed

DODDINGTON PARISH COUNCIL

Councillor Bill Whittaker: The Parish Council had received the resignation of their Vice Chairman three months ago, and then we were very sad to receive the news that Bill had passed away. Bill had served the council for over eight years and was a valuable and very valued member. His work for the village and his lovely humour will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family.

The Council are very happy to welcome Cllr Lucy Howard to fill the vacancy left by Bill.

New CemeteryThe marking out of the first phase of grave spaces has been completed and work is in hand to prepare for the future consecration of the ground.

Abbey Recreation GroundFurther instances of damage have occurred within the recreation ground. A set of goal posts have been vandalised and new shutters are being ordered to protect windows in the pavilion.

Village MaintenanceDuring the summer recess, two motor accidents occurred within the village resulting in damage to Parish Council property. In one case the oak posts and chains near the clock tower were knocked down and in a second incident one of the white speed sign gates in Wimblington Road was damaged. Quotations for the repairs have been received and the incidents reported to the police and the insurance companies.

Parish Council – vacancy of a councillorThe Parish Council has a vacancy for a Parish Councillor following the resignation of Patricia Jolley. We would like to take the opportunity of thanking Pat for her many years of service to the council and the village.

Arrangements on the filling of the vacancy will be posted on the village noticeboard.

Doddington Diary October 2019

Doddington couple, Ged and Marjorie Bishop recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. Ged was 17 and Marjorie was 16 when they met and when Ged was discharged from the army after National Service they were married at the Methodist Church, in Doddington. They went on to have two daughters, Catherine and Vanessa, they also have two grand-daughters, a grandson and a great grand-daughter.

Ged and Margery have lived in Doddington all their married lives. For much of the time Ged ran a fruit and vegetable business along with his partner, Henry Bowers from Chatteris. For many years Marjorie worked at Askham House. They are well known in the village as they have always been involved in local organisations. For many years Ged served on the Village Hall committee and helped produce and appear in the very popular shows. Marjorie was the poppy organiser for the British Legion and is still a member of the Womens Institute.

They began their celebrations with an “open house” sharing the day with many friends and relatives and ended with lunch at the Oliver Cromwell Hotel. They were delighted to be joined by their bridesmaid Dorothy Walker and surprised by a visit from their best man. They were also very proud to receive a card from the Queen..

Tractor Run!

The Village was the lunch time stop for 48 tractors that were on the inaugural Steve Trostler Memorial Tractor Run. The event was arranged by “Ben Burgess” of Caotes in memory of their Branch Manager who had tragically passed away in an accident. They were raising money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. More details about the event and pictures can be found on the Ben Burgess Facebook page.

DODDINGTON STREET PRIDE GROUP

For over 2 years now, Doddington Street Pride has been clearing litter from around the village every month. Our Group is one of many throughout Fenland, sponsored by the District Council.

But why does the Council sponsor local volunteers to do this for them? The answer is quite simple - because it is the cheapest way to keep the streets clean. Without volunteer groups like ours, the Council would not be able to do the work for us, despite what anyone may think about how council tax is used. No volunteer group means litter-strewn streets, it’s that simple.

Our Group carried out its monthly litter pick on 7th September, and within one week the amount of litter that had been discarded in gutters and on pavements was an eye-opener. For instance, Ingles Lane on the morning of Sunday 15th September was awash with plastic drinks cups, plastic straws, a canister of Pringles crisps (most of which were crushed on the road) and styro-foam boxes from a fast food outlet. All of this was within 30 yards, at most, of a rubbish bin.

All we are asking is that each and every one of us take a little more care and think about how we get rid of our rubbish. There are plenty of bins around and if you see anyone not respecting our village, then why not ask them to do a bit better? Also, if you think there are particular areas of the village that could benefit from a litter-pick just let us know via our Doddington Street Pride Facebook page.

On to more positive things, by the time you read this we should have com-pleted work on restoring the pond and area between Pocket Park and the playing fields. We have installed a picnic bench set bought from a grant from Fenland District Council, and a bench donated to us by Amey Caspa, the waste disposal company. We hope you enjoy the facilities we have been able to provide.

If any of this has stirred you to consider joining our Group, then just turn up at our regular monthly litter pick. We always meet at the Clock Tower at 2pm on the first Saturday of every month.

Doddington Diary October 2019

Doddington in the Second World War by David EdwardsOctober 1939The British Legion began weekly dances in their hall on Thursday evenings 6.30pm to 10pm.

Air Raid Precautions lectures in first aid were held in the Church rooms, which had been set-up as a first aid post. The Air Raid Wardens were also having refresher courses.

The Isle of Ely County Council deferred improvements to the junction of Church Lane and Turf Fen Lane. Mr Martin had agreed to sell 40 square yards of his land on the corner to the council for £15 plus £30 to move and re-erect his wooden buildings on the land.

Mr Fred Fovargue moved his hairdressing business to one of the shops opposite the school, previously used by Mr T W Bester as a flower and seeds shop.

All men aged 20 to 22 were required to register for National Service.

The Isle of Ely Football League cancelled its league programme but hoped to continue with its cup competitions.

The Mothers Union decided to turn their meetings into working parties for knitting and other work for soldiers, all materials to be provided by the Union.

£10 8s 5d was raised in a collection for the Red Cross organized by Mrs Kayser and Miss Ridge.

By the end of the month there were only 37 evacuees in the village, 11 mothers and 26 children. There having been no attacks on London, the rest had returned home.33 patients were transferred from the Cambridge Mill Road Infirmary to the Workhouse.

Doddington farmer Stanley Redhead married Miss Freda Ethel (Bet) Parlett at Terrington St John.

The seven pubs in the village at this time were The Three Tuns, The George, The Hare and Hounds (High St), The Vine (Newgate), The Brickmakers Arms, The White House (Benwick Rd) and The Swan (junction of Benwick Rd and Dykemoor).

Five other pubs closed between 1919 and 1939: The White Swan (High St), The Wheatsheaf (Benwick Rd), The Nightingale (Newgate), The Golden Lion (Benwick Rd) and The Jolly Farmer (Primrose Hill). to be continued
