Audio Adjustment

The Audio Adjustment Submenucontains the access to the speakerdelay and the output level adjustmentsettings of the DSC 1000. Follow theexplanations in the Upper Menu Lineon the bottom of your screen to makeadjustments.

DelayDue to the different distancesbetween the listening position for thefront channel speakers and thesurround speakers, the amount of timeit takes for sound to reach your earsfrom the front or surround speakers isdifferent. You may compensate for thisdifference through the use of thedelay settings to adjust the timing forthe specific speaker placement andacoustic conditions in your listeningroom or home theater. Measure the distance from thelistening position to each of theindividual loudspeakers. Once done, select per loudspeaker the distancethat is closest to the one measured.Output level adjustmentOutput level adjustment is a key partof the configuration process for anysurround sound product.NOTE: Listeners are often confusedabout the operation of the surroundchannels. While some assume thatsound should always be coming fromeach speaker, most of the time therewill be little or no sound in thesurround channels. This is becausethey are only used when a moviedirector or sound mixer specificallyplaces sound there to createambiance, a special effect or tocontinue action from the front of theroom to the rear. When the outputlevels are properly set it is normal forsurround speakers to operate onlyoccasionally. Artificially increasing thevolume to the rear speakers maydestroy the illusion of an envelopingsound field that duplicates the wayyou hear sound in a movie theater orconcert hall. The default settings of the DVD playeris 0 dB for all channels. In case youfeel adjustments are necessary inyour setup, we advise you to make theadjustments using a test disccontaining either pink noise or tracksthat you are very familiar with.

TEST SCREEN

Test ScreenWhen you activate the Test Screen viathe OSD you can activate a still imageto test all settings and the videoperformance of your TV. With thevertical color bars you can test thefollowing:• proper color intensity on your TV, • the proper color of each bar,

showing if the proper video standardis turned on: the colors should be(left to right): black, white, yellow, cyan (turquoise), green, magenta(purple), red, blue, black.

• proper color transition, seen assharp separation of the bars, S-Videowill be better than Video, RGB best ofall.

• the performance of the color filter inyour TV (with ”Video” signals), baredges should show no verticalcrawling dots. Here S-Video andRGB formats usually give noproblems.

With the gray scale and theblack/white fields below the colorbars the brightness and contrast ofyour screen can be adjusted optimally, see ”TV Picture Adjustment” below.

TV Picture Adjustment with Test ScreenThese adjustments may be done now,but you can also make them aftersetup has been finalized.

Brightness adjustment:1. Turn down the color control on your

TV until the color bars are visible inblack and white.

2. Adjust the contrast to the lowestlevel where you still can see all barswithin the grey scale in the testpicture separately and clearly.

3. Adjust the Brightness so that thebars in the gray scale are all visible. The bar furthest to the left has to beas black as possible rather thangray but the next must be clearlydistinguishable. All the bars in thegray scale have to be gradually andevenly changing from black towhiter, from left to right.

Contrast adjustment:1. Adjust the contrast on your TV until

you see a bright white bar in thelower right corner of the screen anda deep dark black bar at the left. The optimal contrast setting willdepend on your preference and thesurrounding light in the TV room.

2. If the brightness of the white bardoes not increase while turning upthe contrast or when the borders ofthe white letters on top bloom(overlight) into the black areas, drastically decreasing thesharpness of the script, then theContrast has been turned up toomuch. Reduce the contrast untilthese effects disappear and thevideo still looks realistic.

3. If you are watching TV in daylight, adjust the Contrast so that a normalvideo picture has about the samelook as the surroundings in yourroom. This relaxes the eye whenwatching the TV picture. Thiscontrast setting may be reducedwhen the surrounding light isdimmed, usually improvingsharpness.

4. The gray scale in the middle lineneeds to have the same cleardifference between each bar asbefore the contrast adjustment. Ifnot, go back to the brightnessadjustment and repeat step 3 andthen the contrast adjustments, making only minor adjustmentseach time for optimisation.

Color adjustment.1. When Brightness and Contrast are

set optimally, turn up the colorcontrol. Adjust to the level wherethe colors look strong but stillnatural, not overdone. If the colorlevel is too high, depending on theTV used some of the bars will seemwider or the color intensity will notincrease when the control is turnedup. Then the color control must bereduced again. At the end youshould test the color intensity alsowith a video, e.g. pictures of naturalfaces, flowers, fruit and vegetablesand other well known naturalarticles for an optimal setting of thecolor intensity.

2. If your TV has a Tint option (withmost European TVs this is availableor effective only with NTSC signals, not with PAL), use the large whitebar below the Grayscale to tweakthe warmth of the picture. Everyviewer has a difference inpreference. Some prefer a littlecolder picture, some a warmerglow. The Tint function on your TVand the white bar can be used tocontrol this. Adjust the Tint to thelevel where you feel the white colorhas the tone you prefer.

GLOSSARYBit rateValue indicating the amount of videodata compressed in a DVD persecond. The unit is Mbps (megabit persecond). 1 Mbps indicates that thedata per second is 1,000,000 bits. Thehigher the bit rate, the larger theamount of data. However, this doesnot always mean higher qualitypictures.ChapterSections of a picture or a music pieceon a DVD that are smaller than titles. Many titles are composed of severalchapters, but many others are not. Each chapter is assigned a chapternumber enabling you to locate thechapter you want.Dolby Digital (“5.1”, “AC-3”)This sound format for movie theatersis more advanced than Dolby ProLogic Surround. In this format, the rearspeakers output stereo sound with anexpanded frequency range and asubwoofer channel for deep bass isindependently provided. This format isalso called “5.1” because thesubwoofer channel is counted as 0.1channel (since it functions only whena deep bass effect is needed). All sixchannels in this format are recordedseparately for superior channelseparation. Furthermore, since all thesignals are processed digitally, lesssignal degradation occurs. The name“AC-3” comes from the fact that it isthe third audio coding method to bedeveloped by the Dolby LaboratoriesLicensing Corporation.Manufactured under license fromDolby Laboratories. Dolby Pro Logic II SurroundThis is a method of decoding surroundrecordings that produces fivechannels from two-channel sound.Compared with the former DolbySurround system, Dolby Pro Logic IISurround reproduces left-to-rightpanning more naturally and localizessounds more precisely. To take fulladvantage of Dolby Pro Logic IISurround, you should have a pair of

rear speakers and a center speaker. The rear speakers output stereosound.DTSDigital audio compression technologydeveloped by Digital Theater Systems,Inc. This technology conforms to 5.1-channel surround. The rear channelsare stereo and there is a discretesubwoofer channel in this format. DTSprovides 5.1 discrete channels of highquality digital audio. Good channelseparation is realized, because allchannels are recorded discretely andprocessed digitally.Manufactured under license fromDigital Theater Systems, Inc. MPEG AUDIOInternational standard coding systemto compress audio digital signalsauthorized by ISO/IEC. MPEG 1conforms to up to 2-channel stereo, used on some DVD’s as alternate(other language) track.DVDA disc that contains up to 8 hours ofmoving pictures even though itsdiameter is the same as a CD. Thedata capacity of a single-layer andsingle-sided DVD, at 4.7 GB (GigaByte), is 7 times that of a CD.Furthermore, the data capacity of adual-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5GB, a single-layer and double-sidedDVD 9.4 GB, and a dual-layer anddouble-sided DVD 17 GB. The picturedata uses the MPEG 2 format, one ofthe worldwide standards of digitalcompression technology. The picturedata is compressed to about 1/40 of itsoriginal size. The DVD also uses thevariable rate coding technology thatchanges the data to be allocatedaccording to the status of the picture. The audio data is recorded in DolbyDigital, DTS and/or PCM, allowing youto enjoy more natural audio presence.Furthermore, various advancedfunctions such as multi-angle,multilingual, and subtitles may beprovided with the DVD.

Multi-angle functionVarious angles or viewpoints of thevideo camera for a scene arerecorded on some DVDs. Multilingual function Several languages for the sound orsubtitles in a picture are recorded onsome DVDs.Parental ControlA function of some (particulary US)DVD’s to limit playback of the disc bythe age of the users. The limitationvaries from disc to disc. When it isactivated, playback is completelyprohibited, violent scenes are skippedor replaced with other scenes and soon.TitleThe longest sections of a picture or amusic piece on a DVD; a movie, etc.,for a picture piece on video software;or an album, etc., for a music piece onan audio software. Each title isassigned a title number enabling youto locate the title you want.TrackSections of a music piece on a CD.Each track is assigned a track numberenabling you to locate the track youwant.PCMPulse code modulation, anuncompressed data formation.NTSCNational TV Systems Committee: avideo standard used in USA.PALPhase Alternation Line: a videostandard used in many Europeancountries.
