THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Three ways to foolishness—or faith Some of us are quick to admit we don’t need help in being foolish. We do this quite well on our own. Nonetheless, the story of the Emmaus travelers provides a checklist of choices that lead to boneheaded moves. First of all, they abandon hope too soon. Second, they separate from the community of faith. Third, they discount reports that Jesus is still being encountered. No won-der they didn’t recognize Jesus when he was standing right next to them! Practice patience. Stay close. And seek the Lord while he may be found.

Tres caminos a la estupidez—o la fe Algunos admitimos rápidamente que no necesitamos ayuda para ser estúpidos. Lo hacemos bastante bien por nuestra cuenta. HOW TO REQUEST MASS INTENTIONS

Fr. Mark and Fr. Claude are continuing their commitment to dedicating scheduled Mass intentions at the live streamed and private Masses.

If you would like to request a Mass intention, you may drop off your written request in the mail slot of the rectory (include requested date of intention, for whom, who is re-questing and offering) or email your request to the parish office at parish.olfc@rcav.org.

THE CHURCH NEVER STOPS!

During these trying times, it is comforting to remember that the Church never stops. We may not be celebrating Mass publicly right now, but we never stop being the Church.

We appreciate your prayers and support during this diffi-cult time for everyone. Let us keep praying for each other, especially for those severely impacted by this pandemic.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

How often do we take the time to discern what Jesus wants from us? Are our prayers always petitions, asking Jesus to do things for us? If so, that’s a one-sided relationship. Liv-ing our faith means developing a personal relationship with Jesus. Just like any friendship, there is give and take, each side listening to each other and helping each other out. Take time in silence to listen to what Jesus is asking of you.

EMAIL FRAUD WARNING

The Archdiocese has received multiple re-ports from parishioners and priests who have fallen victim to a recent Internet email phish-

ing scam. Imposters, posing as priests and using email addresses that are similar to those of our priests, have been emailing people asking for personal donations, gift cards, and other forms of financial assistance.

Never respond to emails requesting Google Play cards, iTunes cards, or any other form of personal financial assis-tance, even if it appears to be from a priest, deacon, reli-gious, parish staff or bishop. If you have any doubt, please contact the sender by other means to verify any requests.

What does it mean to have a Mass "offered" for someone?

An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most com-mon, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died.

One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical "Mirae caritatis" (1902) beauti-fully elaborated this point and emphasized the connection between the communion of saints with the Mass: "The grace of mutual love among the living, strengthened and increased by the sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, espe-cially by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the communion of saints." When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions: First, to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church. Second, to offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole Church. Third, to offer the Mass for a particular intention, such as the repose of the soul of someone who has died. Usually, a stipend is given to the priest for offer-ing the Mass, which thereby in justice creates an obliga-tion which must be satisfied. When we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of his soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and com-forting than any other sympathy card or bouquet of flow-ers. To have a Mass offered on the occasion of a birthday, anniversary or special need is appropriate, beneficial and appreciated.

When we are unable to receive Holy Communion sacra-mentally, we can receive great graces and blessings by ex-pressing our desire to do so in what is called a “spiritual Communion.”

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I em-brace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

After further prayerful consideration; and after no small amount of sadness; and after hearing from senior pastors and others about the need for a single directive for the entire Archdiocese; and in keeping with the regulations of the other Dioceses of Brit-ish Columbia; I direct that all Masses, whether Sunday or weekday, beginning on Saturday, March 21, are to be offered without a public congregation, until further no-tice. This likewise applies to other parish activities and celebra-tions, such as Stations of the Cross, and so on.

Consequently, all the faithful are dispensed, for the time being, from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.
