By Dr. Eric R. Tepper, Podiatrist PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY
Peripheral nerves carry signals from the central nervous system to muscles, skin, and internal organs. Peripheral neuropathy occurs when this process is injured or damaged. In many cases, a person first feels the effects of peripheral neuropathy in the hands and feet. Weakness and numbness occur along with a tin- gling, burning pain. The ability to sense vibration or how arms and legs are positioned may become impaired, and people often feel unsteady on their feet. Patients risk burning themselves and often develop open sores or ulcers on their feet due to continuous friction or pressure that they cannot sense. Peripheral neuropathy may occur due to underlying conditions like diabetes, kidney failure, alcoholism, malnutrition, or the use of certain medications.
If your feet hurt, it's important to find out why. Following diagnosis, it's time to formulate a treatment plan which may consist of medication, orthotics, surgery, exercise, or even a change in foot wear. Many foot problems evolve over time, from improper shoes, age, slow-growing medical conditions, physical stress, and muscular imbalance. If your feet hurt, it's important to communicate with your doctor. Now is a good time to schedule an appointment for family foot care here at Rice Medical Center. Please call 234-5571.1 am there every Tuesday.
P.S. When doctors diagnose peripheral neuropathy and determine its cause, treatment to repair peripheral nerves is often successful.

CAREFUL BITE Sometimes when you have had
major work done on your gums and teeth to treat an advanced stage of gum disease, you may need careful bite adjustment to protect your teeth from further injury. They may be out of alignment, causing unusual stress when you bite or chew food. Some of your teeth may also have become more mobile or looser than they should be because of the gum disease dam- age.
In adjusting your bite, some of the excess stresses on your teeth may be reduced or eliminated by selectively grinding tooth surfaces that are too high or are otherwise interfering with a
ADJUSTMENT comfortable bite. Your dentist may also recommend permanent splinting by crowning some of your teeth to give them better stability. Other adjust- ments, including a gentle orthodontic rearrangement of teeth, may be needed for your comfort and protec- tion.
Whatever damage gum disease may have caused, your best protection is prompt and regular treatment by your dentist.
Presented as a public service to promote better dental health. From the office ofJOHN B. MYRES, D.D.S., 700 S. Austin Road, Eagle Lake, 234- 3525.
