Legacy

By the time Heidi Moore had run

her last race in a Warren County High uniorm, she had brokenall three records her coach JohnSlepetz held up as a challenge andgoal to her three years earlier, aswell as our more – the long jump, the triple jump, the 4 x 800 meterrelay – and in her last race at theState Meet at Madison University her senior year, she would add the300 Intermediate Hurdles to thelist, an event she had run only three times beore.

“In the end there was no eventthat Heidi would not try, or couldnot excel in given enough time.– And or Heidi there was never

enough time,” her high schoolcoaches John Slepetz and StanBrooks told us.

Heidi Moore, WCHS, 1995-99Seven school records:

1. 100 meters, 1.7;. 00 meters, 6.1;

3. 400 meters, 59.;4. 300 meter hurdles, 46.4;5. Long Jump, 16-eet-10 ¼

inches;

7. 4 x 800 meter relay,10:45

But or all her athletic excellence,it was as a human being that HeidiMoore-Sonsino let her greatestlegacy. As we reported upon herpassing, rather than let a cruelturn o ate dictate how she livedout her lie, Heidi Moore took

that ate by the horns and devotedmuch o her nal years not only to the ght against her own can-cer, but to that o others youngerthan her. Heidi also continued hereducation leading to a career inspeech pathology, as well as doingwhat people do, alling in love and

getting married. She graduated in 1999 then at-

tended James Madison University where she obtained her under-graduate degree in 003. It wasat JMU as reshman, where Heidi

met her husband, Eric. Shortly a-ter graduation, she was diagnosedwith Stage IV colon cancer. Whileshe was undergoing extensive che-motherapy treatments and multi-ple surgeries, she continued work-ing towards her Master’s Degree, which she achieved rom JMU in005 in the eld o Communica-tion Sciences and Disorders.

Heidi then began her employ-ment in the Warren County SchoolDistrict, where she was a Speech-Language Pathologist. A year latershe moved to Loudoun County and continued her Speech careerat Belmont Station Elementary in

Ashburn, Virginia. Not only didHeidi inspire the children that shehelped to speak, but she changedthe lives o their amilies as well.Troughout her years workingin the school districts, Heidi re-ceived numerous thank you cardsand letters rom the parents o her

students. Tis is one example, re-ceived recently:

“Heidi worked with [my son] orabout a year and a hal. He was al-most ½ when he started meetingwith her and had no words at all.Te beginning was difcult as hecried every day when I droppedhim o and I could hear him wail-

A Special Love

Heidi also worked in the “SpecialLove” Camp Fantastic program. She explained what that experi-ence meant to her and those even

younger than her acing the ghto their lives

“Special Love hosts a weeklongcamp, Camp Fantastic, or chil-dren between the ages o 7 to 17who are undergoing cancer treat-ment. Children diagnosed withcancer are orced to grow up muchtoo ast. Camp Fantastic providesa place where they can ‘just bekids’ again. Immediate bonds areorged o similar experience andunspoken acceptance. It’s a place

where wigs come o and guardsare let down. No one pays atten-tion to the supercial; baldnessand scars don’t matter there. It’snot a surprise that most campers

reer to the experience as ‘the bestweek o their lives.’ ”

Later her amily told us, “As aSpecial Love counselor and am-bassador, Heidi hoped to inspireand encourage the campers o

Camp Fantastic. Year ater year, they did or her what she tried todo or them and year ater yearshe ell deeper and deeper in love.Being part o such a close SpecialLove amily osters hope, strength, and the drive to ght and NEVERgive up. In honor o Heidi, remem-ber to do as the campers at CampFantastic do: accentuate the posi-tive, celebrate lie, and o course– Believe!!”

On Saturday morning, May 1st,about 150 locals did just that insupport o another endeavor toght cancer, Te Relay or Lie.– Good work organizers, runners

and supporters. As an event logo on -shirts

worn by many participants stated– “I’m going to run orever”.

Calling all FireghterCounty moves to coordinate new volunteer recruitment, traini

By Carol BallardWarren County Report

Dawn Greer and Nicole Reynoldshave been appointed volunteer co-ordinators in Warren County’s Fireand Rescue Department.

In an eort to support and im-prove the county’s outstanding redepartment, Warren’s Supervisors

hired Springsted ManagementConsultants to do an in-depthstudy on its ten stations. One o

the main recommendations was tond out how to recruit and retainquality re and rescue volunteersand to standardize methods o re-

cruiting among the stations.“It was worth every penny to

develop standardized orientation-type training,” said Fireghter/EM John Smith.

Te committee, made up o War-ren County Fire and Rescue Chie

Richard E. Mabie, Lena Meade, PatCross, and Smith, who is also theassistant chie o Company two, ound two qualied candidates.

“Tus the deed was done. We arehappy to take all the talent we can

get. Tey both have backgroundsin human resources and in the redepartment,” John said.

Dawn, a certied EM Basic andEnhanced provider holds a ull-time position with the U.S. Gov-ernment and is owner/operatoro Blue Mountain Escape Bed &

Breakast in Linden.Nicole is involved in the opera-

tions o South Warren re stationCompany Tree and her husband,Fred Reynolds, is a reghter

there.Te women want all personnel

in the individual stations to know

who they are and what they’re try-ing to achieve.

Nicole said, “We’ll go rom sta-tion to station and see what’sworking and gather inormationto nd out how to enhance theirprograms and then document the

progress.”Dawn added, “We’ve developed

a list o questions to ask and we’ll

give it to each station. We hope toget answers and come up with planon how to improve the process torecruit and retain people. Ten

we’ll write it all down and share itamong the stations.”

Tey also said they’d like to ndout i volunteers would sit downwith them one-on-one at the ad-ministration, operational and vol-unteer levels and gather their in-

ormation and history.Nicole said part o their job will

be to educate and support, to givea point o contact i anyone hasproblems, and to give back to the

volunteers with community ac-tion. It has been suggested to re-

ward them with movie tickets, or“re ghter bucks” which couldbe traded or services, like ree oilchanges.

Some o these rewards are al-ready in place in Loudoun andPrince William Counties. “We

have some like counties to draw rom,” she said.

John said, “We already have ca-reer proessionals at two o ourstations and at two others, mem-bers get help with personal prop-erty taxes and have their town

stickers paid. We’re looking to en-hance that with benet incentives.Tese could include a retirement

program and a consistent market-ing program.”John has heard a lot o conversa-

tion over the years about these is-

sues. “We have a long way to go.

Tis discussion has been goingon since the early 1980s. I’ve beenthere. I believe every station hasa dierent application or the vol-unteers. Tere’s no standard,” hesaid.

But there are increasingly im-

proved standards or certicationas a reghter. Just to ride on a retruck requires six months o train-ing. Requirements have changed, and more is required o volunteers, who don’t get paid and are doingtheir on-call service mostly as a

way to give back to the commu-nity.

And times have also changed, making it more difcult to get thetime or training even i a volun-teer is willing to give up the time.Te weak economy has sometimes

orced people to take several pay-ing jobs just to keep up with theiramilies’ needs. Ater long hours attheir day jobs, reghters going orcertication or basic Emergency Medical echnician have to de-

  vote every Monday and Wednes-

day evening and our Saturdays orour months. Fireghter I and IItraining requires attendance a ew

nights a week or six months.Te rewards are oten great

though. Besides hesome o the traininto urther their careeeas.

Smith said, “Tescan come and train ato do their own caree

to be assistants in hhave aspirations or tion as a reghter, agone on to be careerin other counties.”

No way!! – Anna celebrates her 80th birth

Over the years I have developed

a special “relationship” with Anna, who runs NFL-quality intererenceor the public school administra-tion sta. She was quick to catchon to my strategy o sneaking inthe “back door” – rom the hallway o the county administrative side

o the WCGC.“I see you. You better get over

here and sign in – and who are you

here to bother today?” Anna que-ries with a twinkle in her eye.

Whether I was going straight to

with no educational background,or at worst part o the “grand con-spiracy” to dumb down America;or I was just dropping in to seeFinance Director Rob Ballentine

Anna had me pegged – and thosehoused deep in the bowels o theschool board administrative ofcescould maintain a level o certainty that they would receive due warn-ing o any media storm approach-

ing.But our “adversarial” relationship

really just developed as an excuseto trade stories and catch up on thepulse o the community at large.

Apparently I’m not the only one.Surprise party co-conspirator

and Assistant Superintendent o Schools Dr. Lou Justis ended uphustling to explain why he got tothe party at the banquet acility o Te Apple House in Linden aterAnna – a quick errand run gonewrong. He ended up circling the

WCGC parking lot ater Anna hadbeen wisked away by backup con-spirators to the party.

Dr. J, as Anna calls him, ad-dressed the surprise party coverstory – “Tis party was supposedto be in Fredericksburg,” he noted.

“Just Dr. J and me,” Anna added.“Anna is the gatekeeper as you

all know … around the ofce she’scalled the drill sergeant, and prob-ably a lot o other things,” Justis

said in recounting how Anna keepstabs not only on “intruders” such

as mysel, but sta as well.

“I I’m ve or 10 minutes late, Ihear about it,” Justis observed. “Ialmost beat her to work one time.We pulled into the parking lot atthe same time but at 80 she stillwalks aster than me.”

Justis, in his second go-round inthe county public school system,

noted that he was planning to re-tire (again) beore Anna, adding,

“She’ll probably ollow me to Fred-

ericksburg to check what time I getup.”

Don’t worry, Dr. J – I’ll keep herbusy back here in River City.

And by the way, Anna, I want tosee the birth certicate – the REAL

one!!! I’m not buying that 80 story.

In most neighborhoods, youknow them as the Joneses, and no matter what you do, youcan’t keep up with them.

Where I live, it’s a woman and

I call her Rambo. She attackseverything with the precisionand skill of a highly trainedspecial forces military unit. For all I know, she probably helpedtake down that bin Laden guy.Wouldn’t surprise me.

Every spring, when I realizethe lawn doesn’t fertilize itself,Rambo’s already knocked thatone out several weeks ago.

And when I don’t see myriding tractor cutting the grasson its own, Rambo’s done hersthree times.

When it comes to washing thecar, she does it every weekend.Me, I take a more relaxed ap-proach. Once every 100,000miles.

In the fall, when I can’t see mylawn because of the two millionleaves covering it, Rambo’salready tackled her yard with agas-powered blower.

Avalonia spiritual retreat gets pared-back apprSpiritual retreat’s neighbors claim oul as applicant deends, compromise

By Roger BianchiniWarren County Report

Te embattled Avalonia “PeaceVillage” retreat gained unani-mous approval o its Conditional

Use Permit application rom theWarren County Board o Super- visors on May 17.

In explaining their support ora voluntarily pared-back appli-cation that essentially adds the

county’s zoning blessing to thenon-prot, multi-denomina-tional “Peace Village’s” one-on-one spiritual counseling activitiesthat have been ongoing or nearly a decade under a state permit, the board’s message seemed to be“what’s the problem?”

“We heard about more ears o the unknown … with no real evi-dence that Ms. Jolly’s neighborswill be harmed by this. She haslived there 13 years and there wasno problem until the question [o the permit] arose,” Glavis notedo Jolly’s past use, essentially Phase One o the permit applica-tion, over the course o much o her presence at her Kendall Courtproperty o almost 9 acres.

“I think the neighbors have noreason to ear this – and I wish you all well,” Glavis said prior tothe 5-0 vote o approval.

What was approved was up totwo visitors at a time coming tothe Avalonia property or whatis described as “natural healing, guidance and spiritual counsel-

ing emphasizing the precious-ness o visitors’ own lives and theuse o the natural environment asa source o healing.” Phase Oneactivities include aura imaging, spiritual and lie coaching, medi-

tation, nature walks and spiritualcourses ranging between 1 and1 hours.

Phases wo and Tree o theoriginal application were notapproved, but were voluntarily withdrawn by the applicant.

Phase wo would have allowedup to six visitors at a time andovernight accommodations inAmerican Indian-style teepeesand clay structures.

Phase Tree would have addedseveral “estival” type events o upto 30 visitors at a time, as well asconstruction o a central gazebo.

While acknowledging that ev-eryone involved on either side

ed out. He noted that other ac-tivities also allowed in Ag neigh-borhoods by permit, includingbaby-sitting and barber shopswould create more trafc thanthe retreat permit.

“I don’t want to say ‘Can’t weall get along,’ ” Carter said, reer-encing Rodney King in an ina-mous case o police brutality andcitizen rioting in L.A. some yearsago, “but I hope everyone can gettogether on both sides. I hope thisworks out – we’re all one, man …I better stop or I’m going to startsinging “Cumbaya.”

Enough is enough

Along with several supporters,Jolly or the rst time hersel ad-dressed the sometimes virulentcriticism o her activities andpermit application prior to theMay 17th vote.

“I would never have anticipat-

has proven utile. Teir campaigno alse and misleading inorma-tion has created a sensationalizedatmosphere o negativity, hostil-ity, and drawn media attentionto their disadvantage. However, Jolly added that ater viewing the county video o op-position spokesperson Lisa Pike-Buchanan’s April 19th commentsat a meeting Jolly could not at-tend due to mid-April oodingon her property, she had chosento reply.

However several o her oppo-nents took oense at Jolly’s state-

“Tere are allegations againstus … we’ve been called rednecks… but we all have at least a highschool education,” she said.

A quick check along press row conrmed that this woman’s re-erence to rednecks was the rstpublic description o the Ava-lonia opponents as such duringthe two months o board meetingand work session debate on thepermit application.

Board approves county Summer Camp ProgrSplit board okays eight-week program at a cap o 30 childreBy Roger BianchiniWarren County Report

On May 17th a split Warren Coun-ty Board o Supervisors voted 3- toallow a Parks & Recreation Depart-ment supervised Summer CampProgram to continue with a limitedenrollment.

Richard raczyk’s motion, second-ed by ony Carter, was to approve thecounty’s “Summer With the ParksProgram” with certain concessionsto private daycare providers who ob- jected to what they believe is unaircompetition at prices undercuttingthem based on public tax money.Tose concessions are primarily anenrollment capped at 30 childrenand provisions to allow private day-cares access to county recreationalacilities at a reduced cost.

Glenn White joined raczyk andCarter in voting the program de-signed to oer children aged 5 to 1a range o day-long supervised rec-reational and other activities. Chair-man Archie Fox and Linda Glaviscast the dissenting votes. Glavis casther nal roll-call vote ater a longhesitation and the issue already de-cided by the three positive votes.

As objections to the program

brought orward by local daycareproviders, most prominently Rose-mary Comstock o Angel’s KornerDay Care and Learning Center, wereconsidered, the supervisors instruct-ed the parks department to reezeenrollment at the 15 children regis-tered as o a May 3rd work session.

Parks & Rec Director Dan Lenzreiterated to the board that the sum-mer camp program was being resur-rected to oer a variety o physicaland sporting style activities utilizingthe county’s park and athletic eldsto the community’s youth. A simi-lar program was dropped about adecade ago due to lack o indoor a-cilities to house children during badweather.

Tat problem has now been solvedby access to both the new WarrenCounty Community Center on VillaAvenue and the park system’s athlet-ic acilities, including the gym at theold WCMS on 15th Street.

Te program was designed as acompliment, rather than to competewith the private sector, Lenz said, re-iterating a point he made at a May 3rd work session. Te program oersan eight-week program to amilieswith younger, school-age childrenthrough the bulk o the summer

months when school is out. Te pro-gram is available or the entire eightweeks at a cost o $63 or on a week-ly basis at $97.75 per week.

Tat cost breakdown includes aone-time registration ee o $10, a$60 per week ee, per child or theull eight-week program or $80 perweek, per child on the weekly basis;and $17.75 ees or special events, eld trips and snacks. Te eld tripsand associated costs are optional.Children not participating in eldtrips may remain at the WarrenCounty Community Center or theday.

Day-to-day activities includekickball, ootball, dodgeball, volley-ball, basketball, sotball, soccer andtennis utilizing acilities at the oldmiddle school on 15th Street and theGertrude Miller park and elds andChimney Field tennis courts.

Lenz said parks & rec would makeits acilities available to the privatedaycares at a reduced rate on thedays the program was utilizing them. Also, the community pool would bemade available to daycares on Friday mornings beore and ater scheduledswim lessons.

In opposing the county programunder any circumstance, Comstock

told the board on May 3rd that shewas acing summer layos o mem-bers o her sta based on the poten-tial loss o 10 children rom sevenamilies who told her they wouldswitch to the county program orthe summer in order to save money, then return to her day care when thecounty program ended.

Comstock said it seemed unairto her that a county program couldundercut the private sector by about$40 per child, per week due to its

taxpayer-based undiDuring the May 1

With 15 children already registeredand a waiting list o at least 10 moreawaiting a resolution by the super-  visors, raczyk initially suggested

capping the program at 50. HoweverCarter suggested as a urther accom-modation to the private sector, tolimit registration to 30 children, nearthe number o amilies currently ex-pressing interest.

Chairman Fox called the parks &rec program “nice” and “great or thechildren.” However, he added thatsince he perceived a competitionwith the private sector he could notsupport it.

Carter countered that since theprogram was, indeed, unded by county citizens and their tax money

that it was appropriate that the ser- vice be provided in the summer whenmany two-parent working amiliesare dealing with how to accommo-date care o their children duringwhat are typically school hours the

Laird saidhe opposed the summer camp pro-gram as it now existed.

Comstock reiterated her idea thatthe county oer the program to olderchildren, 1 and up, that would notcompete with her customer base o

younger children. However, as waspointed out on May 3, a previousattempt to target older children in acounty summer youth program hadailed because amilies were reluc-tant to pay or day-time supervision

o children old enough to take careo themselves at home. Lenz told theboard in early May the county lost$30,000 in its earlier attempt to tar-get older children.

In explaining his support, rac-

own-County ‘loveest’ – but what’s getting doWhen the lights went out in Georgia – wait, that was right here in River City

By Roger Bianchini

Warren County Report

On May 4th the ull electedbodies o the own o Front Royal,Warren County met ace to ace orthe rst time since December 7.Also involved was the ull board o the town-county Economic Devel-opment Authority and key sta o all involved boards.

Te purpose was an update oneconomic and inrastructure ini-tiatives o mutual interest to thecounty and town in a ormat thatallows ace to ace discussion andquestions by all the community’s

elected ofcials.

Oten elusive cooperation wouldseem crucial to the county andthe town that is its major popula-tion center, especially since townresidents hold “dual citizenship” asboth county and town citizens. Soit seemed appropriate the ull towncouncil, board o supervisors andEDA board got these updates thateach have received separately in re-cent months as the groundwork ordirect communications betweenelected ofcials, rather than justtheir stas.

O primary interest was progresson right o way acquisition and de-

sign planning or a key north-south

connector road, Leach’s Run Park-way; and the designation o over600 acres as Urban DevelopmentAreas to direct uture growth ad-

jacent to existing development andcentral utilities.

It all sounded strangely amiliar –including a virtual “hippy love-est”on how much better things are now that the two boards and stas canactually stand to sit down and lookeach other in the eye – and evenspeak cordially on those issues cru-cial to the uture o both the townand county citizens.

“It’s not too many years ago notonly weren’t we getting along,we weren’t even talking,” County

Board Chairman Archie Fox said inkicking o the meeting at the new County Community Center on Vil-la Avenue o.

Tey may be talking – but what’sbeing accomplished?

· Tere continues to be actualmovement toward nal ROW ac-quisition and initial budgeting tocreate the long-discussed Leach’s

Run Parkway. Tat planned north-south road is already a much need-ed connector between John Mar-shall Highway and Happy Creekand Shenandoah Shores Roads, where the recommended UDAland is. Te new WCHS and HildaJ. Barbour Elementary School now lie landlocked rom Happy CreekRoad to the north. And WarrenMemorial Hospital plans to relo-cate its main campus nearby aswell. Te act the town now has

budgeted FY 01 unds or Leach’sRun Parkway engineering and de-sign work as o July 1 seems a plus;· as does the report already beoreboth the town and county that aso July, Avtex Superund cleanuppartner FMC will have completedremediation work begun in theearly 1990s. more measured determination o possible uses at the site;· the town and county continueto slouch toward a potentially grudging compliance with a statemandate that the county designate

approximately 670 acres as UrbanDevelopment Areas by July 1. Testate is requiring all communitieswith average growth rates over 15percent to approve UDA designa-tions by July 1.

But talk about déjà vu all overagain – ater hearing the dynamicso all the above items as I have with

little variation over the past ve orsix months beore both the townand county governments, I thoughtI might be in a time loop in an epi-sode o the old sci- V show “Tewilight Zone”.

Ten when Front Royal Mayorim Darr began talking about theSwan Farm developer withoutacknowledging that he was sit-ting directly to his right – recenttown EDA board appointee RonLlewellyn – my sudden bout o wilight Zone vertigo worsened …and worsened some more as oneo the owners – Councilman om

Sayre – o key un-acquired Leach’sRun Parkway right o way underdiscussion, also sat nearby and un-acknowledged.

When the new Villa AvenueCommunity Center meeting room

lights began to randomly ash o and on throughout County Plan-ning Director aryn Logan’s 10-minute review o the UDA plan Istarted to get really nervous. Andwhen the ull council and board o supervisors began humming theamiliar strains o Te wilightZone theme, turned toward pressrow, eyes rolled up, pointing andchanting “One o us” that was it – Iwas out o there!!!

Te bottom line o Logan’s o-speed strobe light presentation – Ididn’t really leave, I just made that

last part up, except or the lightshow, that really happened – wasthat county and town public hear-ings and potential votes o approvalo the UDA plan are scheduled orJune 1 and June 7, respectively.

Te state deadline or all Virginiamunicipalities to approve a UDAplan or ace the loss o virtually allVDO road unding is July 1.

Te state legislature has man-dated that all municipalities withgrowth rates over 15 percent be-tween the most recent two censusperiods designate UDAs to ocusanticipated growth near existingdevelopment and central utilities.Te rationale is to ease the com-monwealth’s road costs associatedwith new development, and helppreserve some o Virginia’s remain-

Speaking of Sports

It was halftime on Monday NightFootball and the questions fromHoward Cosell were pointed, asshould expected from a guy withsuch a sharp — some would sayforked — tongue. On the other side of the screen was none other than Muhammad Ali, who had justdefeated George Foreman in one of the greatest fights in human history.

Cosell goaded Ali, asking directquestions and casting doubt on thegenuineness of Ali’s “rope-a-dope”strategy in the fight. Ali, though hedid fend off some questions, quicklycame clean and told his side of thestory.

Fast-forward to the mid-1980s. A“Bull Durham” mentality pervades.Stick to the cliches, to the tried andwell-trod-out lines every athlete canmutter without stretching a synapsein their million-dollar skulls. “I’mhappy for my team,” he says, adding“blah blah blah blah blah.”

Over time, this condition took over the sports world ... it’s almost asmysterious as the colony-collapsedisorder afflicting our honeybee

population. Nobody is quite surewhy athletes have stopped pollinat-ing the local press with story fodder (maybe cellphones and Twitter havesomething to do with it, but nobodycan say for sure).

The backlash is now on the writ-ers, however. In a recent article bymedia analyst Jim Romanesko, headvances the phrase “push-buttonmedia,” implying that beat reportersare failing to ask the hard questions. He quotes former Sacramento Beesports editor Bill Bradley in order to

bolster his argument. At issue is, intheir view, the increased propensity

of sportswriters to ask a player to“talk about” what happened in their most recent game.

“That’s not a question; that’s astatement you’re hoping someonecomments on,” Bradley said. “Iwould love to hear a coach respondwith, “What is your question? Ask me a question and I’ll be happy toanswer.” Nonsense. Of course there’s jour-

nalistic value in hearing the athlete’sunfettered and unprovoked take onhis or her actions.

Ironically, it’s an interview Cosellconducted during another MNFhalftime that underscores that

point. In the presence of another heavyweight personality — in thiscase, former Beatle John Lennon

 — Cosell let somebody else “tell itlike it is.”

Cosell was the person to break thenews of Lennon’s assassination sixyears later, an incredible display of

professional journalism that sawhim fact check and gut check simul-taneously, knowing that the newshe was about to report would liter-ally stultify anyone in earshot of the

broadcast — millions of people.Still, during his first interview

with Beatle John, he found time to push the Bradley button.

“What’s been your view of thisAmerican professional footballscene?” Cosell asks.

“It’s an amazing event and sight,”Lennon replied. “It makes rock con-

certs look like tea parties.”There isn’t a writer on Earth who

could get Lennon to say that with a bunch of direct questions today, letalone in the days before cable TV,where everyone is a star. Sometimeswhat is best said comes from thoseyou ask to just “talk about” stuff as

 best they can.

Memorial Day - Never ForgeWe went into our archives and selected these two photos to remind us that Memorial Day isn’t just a day o punctuated by late spring weather, hot dogs and drinks

is a time to pause during such activities to remember those who have sacriced to keep our nation ree. It is a task that remains unnished with sacrices still madelds against enemies both oreign and domestic. Perhaps the greatest task acing this generation is determining exactly who those enemies really are. It is a task be born o prejudice, ignorance and sel-interest, but rather vigilance and a deep personal commitment to truth and the social abric o our nation. As BrowntowArthur ‘Bunky’ Woods, right, pictured with ellow vet Dwayne Cole, has repeatedly reminded us in the words o late American U.N. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson, is not short, renzied outbursts o emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication o a lietime.”

Dear Stewart,

My garden is full of strangebrown bugs. Tey are shapedlike a shield and smell bad whenI smash them. Will they hurt my trees?

Millicent Urbanski

Dear Millicent,

Man, I really hate those things.Tey are Brown Marmorated StinkBugs, a newer import rom China.Tey hibernate during the coldmonths and they took over my tree hole all winter long. Now allmy acorns taste weird, and I’m still vacuuming them out o my lea bedand moss rugs!

And they can be a big problem be-

cause there aren’t very many thingsthat will kill them. Te robins in-ormed me they certainly aren’tgoing to have any more or appetiz-ers. Tey taste terrible. And thespiders and mantids agree. Nor dowe really want the humans to spray

a whole bunch o chemicals to killthem. Tat doesn’t work on thebugs and might kill us instead!

Te experts out there have guredout sprays with pyrethrins in themwill work but only i you can spray it directly on the insect. Otherwise, knocking them into soapy waterand picking of the leaves with eggsmasses on them is your only otheroption until those scientists gureout something else.

As or your plants, these guys eatby sucking the juice rom lots o diferent plants, not only trees, but

ruit and vegetables too. Tey canreally do a number on your veg-etables and ruit. Tey leave marksthat look a lot like bruises. Or they deorm the plant so it’s really ugly.

But the trees, although they willreceive some damage, are usually

big and strong enough to withstandthem. Just make sure you treat thetrees kindly so they aren’t stressedby other actors. Check your soilto be sure it has plenty o nutrientsin it. Water deeply and regularly every two weeks during droughts.Remove the grass rom the rootzone o the tree and lightly mulchit instead. Tis way the tree stayshappy and it will have way ewerproblems.

Here’s How It Works:

ICCA will be placing ads in newspapers, radio and running television spots

this week, asking people to bring in any old silver and gold coins made before

1965. Those that do bring in their coins will be able to speak with collectors

one on one and have their coins looked at with a specialist. With the help

of these ICCA members offers will be made based on silver or gold content

and the rarity of the coins. All coins made before 1965 will be examined and

purchased including gold coins, silver coins, silver dollars, all types of nickels

and pennies, Those that decide to sell their coins will be paid on the spot.

If you are like a lot of people, you might have a few old coins or even acoffee can full lying around. If you have ever wondered what they are worth,

now might be your chance to find out and even sell them if you choose.

They could be worth a lot, according to the International Coin Collectors

Association, also known as ICCA. Collectors will pay a fortune for some

coins and currency for their collections. If they are rare enough, one coin

could be worth over $100,000, according to Eric Helms, coin collector

and ICCA representative. One ultra rare dime, an 1894S Barber, sold for a

record $1.9 million to a collector in July of 2007. While that is an extreme

example, many rare and valuable coins are stashed away in dresser drawers

or lock boxes around the country. The ICCA and its collector members have

organized a travel ing event in search of all types of coins and currency. “Even

Washington quarters and Roosevelt dimes can be worth many times their face

value,” says Helms. Recent silver markets have driven the price up on even

common coins made of silver. Helms explains, “all half dollars, quarters and

dimes made before 1965 contain 90% silver and are sought after any time

silver prices rise. Right now it’s a sellers market.”

The rarest coins these collectors are looking for include $20, $10, $5

and $2 1/2 gold coins and any coin made before 1850. According to the

ICCA, these coins always bring big premiums. Silver dollars are also very

sought after nowadays.

Other types of items the ICCA will be purchasing during this event include

U.S. currency, silver rounds, proof sets, etc. Even foreign coins are sought

after and will be purchased.

So whether you have one coin you think might be valuable or a large

collection you recently inherented you can talk to these specialists for free
