The Fall activities will resume in September. This year we are starting with a “bang”: a Block
Party on Saturday, September 12th (11:00am to 2:00pm) the day before Rally Sunday. Your
council has worked hard to prepare for this event and we are inviting our neighborhood, many
others … and you! So plan to attend, invite your neighbors to join you, enjoy some good food,
fellowship and fun.
Then on Sunday, September 13th, we gather again for worship and to celebrate the start of
another year of Sunday School. Hard to believe, but this will be East Side Lutheran Church’s
96th year of serving Jesus Christ on the east side of Sioux Falls!

Book Lover Notes from the Library
We have a trilogy of books by author Sandra Robbins that depict three
generations of family that live in the Smoky Mountains. The trilogy is
called “Smoky Mountain dreams”. In the first book, Angel of the
cove, which takes place about 1894, we meet Granny Lawson. She is
the midwife and local medical expert of Cades Cove. Anna Prentiss
has come to stay with Granny for a few months to learn all she can
about being a midwife before she will go to nursing school in New
York. We also meet Simon Martin, the local preacher. Simon
returned from school to help his parents and the community wants him to stay and minister to them. Anna has
much to learn about the mountain people and Granny’s herbal medicines. She comes to love the people she
serves, but is determined she will follow her dreams of nursing school. Both Simon and Granny become very
fond of her and would like her to stay. In the second book, Mountain Homecoming, we meet Rani Martin, a
talented potter, who has an opportunity to leave her beloved mountains and learn more about pottery. She is the
daughter of Simon and Anna. Granny has become valued adopted member of their family. Matthew Jackson is a
boy who was born in the Cove, but left as a child. Matthew’s family history had created bad memories for many
neighbors. Now he has returned, seeking to find his place among the mountain people. In the third book of the
trilogy, Beyond These Hills, we meet Matthew and Raini’s daughter, Laurel. It is mid 1930’s and the Jacksons,
Martins, and other families are being pressed to leave their beloved valley. The Great Smoky Mountains National
Park is being developed by the government. They have been fighting a futile battle to preserve the homes and
farms that they love. Andrew Brady, the young son of a Congressman, arrives entrusted with the job of
persuading the remaining families to sell their land. Of course, we can anticipate the end of the story, but the
stories are entertaining romances and you come to admire the determination and courage of the characters.
Amanda Cabot introduces us to heroine, Harriet Kirk, in her novel, Tomorrow’s Garden. Harriet is the oldest of
6 children. The character weaknesses and resulting deaths of her parents have forced her into the position of
caretaker for the family. The family had been wealthy, but the wealth has almost disappeared. Following the
death of her grandparents and the pressures of an undesirable suitor, Harriet moves the family to a small Texas
town and begins a new life as their schoolteacher. There she finds friends and meets the current mayor/sheriff,
Lawrence Wood. He is a former Texas Ranger who has agreed to take on this job, temporarily. Of course, this is
a romance, but it is interesting to see how these two determined and stubborn people overcome their past
experiences and shortcomings to find peace with each other.
Men who like historical fiction (with some romance thrown in) might enjoy The Flying Cavalier by Gilbert
Morris. The heroes are pilots who are flying for France in World War I. Lance Winslow has come from England
to train with the French before the Great War. At this time, the French are the best fliers in the world. While
there, Lance meets and marries a lovely French girl. Unfortunately during a bombing, his wife is killed. This
loss creates in Lance the desire to kill every German he can. Logan Smith, another pilot hero, has come from the
western U.S. to help the French in their fight against the Germans. He is accompanied by his mechanic friend,
Preacher. Josephine Hellinger, a U.S. journalist, travels with Logan and Preacher. She is an independent
journalist, determined to give her readers a true picture of the war. This is not, of course, a normal role for a
woman of this time.
Secrets on the Wind by Stephanie Whitson will have a special appeal to those who like stories of pioneer times
that are set in our region. The main setting for the story is Fort Robinson, NE., during the late 1870’s. We have
visited this fort and I could link by memories of the fort and its layout to the details of the story. Sergeant Nathan
Boone and Trooper Dorsey discover a woman who had been abused and imprisoned by a homesteader. They take
her to the fort where Granny Max takes her under her wing and endeavors to restore her physical and mental
health. Recovery is a struggle for Liana and she also has a past that she would like to keep hidden. Her secret is
endangered when Trooper Caleb Jackson, a new recruit, appears at the fort.

After almost a month here in Sioux Falls I feel I am beginning to get
into the swing of things. I greatly appreciate the warm welcomes with
which y’all have received me as your pastor. As the “new guy” I
thought it appropriate to give y’all a little background on where I come
from and how I wound up here at East Side.
To begin, I was born and raised in the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina- arriving into
the world shortly after my identical twin brother (who currently serves in the U.S. Air Force). My
father, mother, younger brother, and grandmother all still live back home in Waynesville in the
house which my father built.
My faith journey is a winding one. I was born into the Southern Baptist tradition where I received a
genuine (pronounced geen-yoo-aiyen) believer’s baptism at 8 years old, became United Methodist as
a teenager, and finally joined the Lutheran church in college. One of the first friends I made at
orientation also happened to be the first Lutheran I ever met and is currently serving a church in
Wisconsin after graduating in the same class as my wife and I. So really, it is his fault (and the
excellent, FREE potluck cooking) for bringing me into the Lutheran fold. That and Luther’s
recognition that we are all saved by God’s grace alone.
The past year has been a busy one to say the least: finishing internship in Pennsylvania, getting
hitched to my beautiful wife, graduating seminary, being ordained, and finishing the first phase of
the Navy’s Basic Leadership Course for military chaplains. My basic hobbies
include reading, dancing, fishing, shooting clay pigeons, carving, and playing
cards.
I am glad to be here in South Dakota and I look forward to meeting each of
you, learning your name, forgetting it, and learning it again (hopefully for
good). I look forward to our time together in service of God and our
neighborhood. May you be blessed this day and always.
In peace,
Pastor Josh Johnson

Sundays at East Side Every Sunday morning at East Side there are three worship services and every Sunday evening there is one service. The first two (8:00 and 9:30) are traditional services while the 11:00 is a contemporary service. The 6:00 service is informal with no music and spoken liturgy. All services are alike in that Holy Communion is celebrated weekly and Pastors lead the service and preach a sermon to bring the word of God to those in attendance. All are different when we
look at the people who attend the services. We are different in age, height, weight, hair color, occupation and the talents we possess. But we can use these different talents to do some of the same things on Sundays at East Side. In order for the morning services to function properly there is a need for bus drivers, coffee servers, communion helpers, greeters and lectors. Our Sunday services give us 140 opportunities every month to complete these activities. So far in 2015 there have been 880 opportunities for these activities and about 300 have been filled by members of the service teams scheduled for that month. In addition, the following activities are also in need of volunteers: ushering, teaching Sunday school, participating in the choirs, and helping provide contemporary music. All Christians are called to ministry to use our God given talents. Each of us has a role to play. When you receive a call about filling one of these many opportunities, please say “yes”. If you are not comfortable filling the role you are asked to assume, just say “I am not comfortable with ______ but I would be happy to do ______ instead.” All of us need to be willing to serve in one capacity or another. Thank you. Linda Hoeck, Volunteer Coordinator
Did you remember to contact the church? There are many members for whom the church does not have contact information. We realize many people are giving up their land lines and relying on cell phones. Please remember to update your phone numbers and new addresses with the church so we can keep in contact with you. Also, the church has the ability to send out emails to members so we would like to have current email addresses also. Thank you for keeping this information current with us.

WELCA GROWTH (Education)
ALL WOMEN RETREAT
On July 13th about 30 women attended the retreat we started about 9:30am with women coming or going as
their schedule allowed,. The June, July and August bible studies from the GATHER magazine focused on the
Lord loves a cheerful giver and why do we give3 to God. Our presenters were Pastors-Wangsness (June),
Chell (July), and Salberg (August). Each Pastor had a different approach to the focus which made the Bible
Studies very interesting and inspirational. Many of those attended had very positive comments on the day. Just
a great big thank you to the Pastors that so willingly said yes and made the day a success.
Of course, we are Lutherans so we enjoyed a wonderful potluck and great fellowship with one another at noon.
Fitting with our Bible Study, two street people asked if they could also eat the potluck and were told yes.
Hopfully, they were fed bodily and was inspired as one of them stayed and listened to part of the August Bible
Study.
We are planning next year’s programs in the next couple of months, if you have an idea of what you would
like to see WELCA do, please tell a board member.
SEPTEMBER 14TH FELLOWSHIP AT 2:00 PM.
YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS FELLOWSHIP as our speaker will be Pastor Josh talking about his
life and path that led him to ESLC. What a great way to get to know about our new Associate Pastor. Everyone
is welcome, male, female, circle member or not circle member; please plan to come.
Also, we will have the election of officers at the September Fellowship meeting.
WELCA GROWTH CHAIRPERSONS

WELCA News from President Janet Wilcox – August 2015
WELCA is still searching for someone to fill one position on the WELCA Board for next year. We need a
Vice President who will be willing to be President after the new sitting president leaves. The Vice President
and the President each serve 2 year terms. If someone would choose to be a Co-Vice President, we would try
to find another person to be Co-Vice President. We are so happy to welcome Katie Alexander (former ESL
secretary) as our new Secretary of Publicity. I know she’ll do a great job. WELCA does much to serve people
and we need good leadership to accomplish those services. Please prayerfully consider becoming a WELCA
Vice President and contact Donna Murphy at 251-6096 or Marcia Roynesdal at 929-7503, if you have any
questions about the open position or if you’d like to offer your talent. You can also contact any current board
member. We only need someone who is willing to work with the rest of the Board and Committees and who
loves to SERVE OTHERS. We’ll have election of officers at the Sept. 14th Fellowship meeting.
The Soup and Pie Supper will be October 8, 2015 and we will be having craft tables available again this year.
If you would like to sell your crafts at this event, please contact Nancy Renner at 336-8578. 10% of your sales
will go to WELCA. There will be many opportunities to help with the supper by supplying pies or baked
goods for the bake sale as well as actually working at the supper. Sign-up sheets will be out on Sept. 20th.
Circles will begin meeting again in September. If you would like to join a circle, please ask anyone in WELCA
about times and meeting places. You’d be most welcome at any circle meeting.

News and Updates
We have asked much of each other this year. We’ve had a special
appeal for the Roof Fund. We ask for your faithful support for the
general fund as well as our building fund. As most of you know, the
building fund is “in the hole”! Your continued support is encouraged …
and much appreciated.
Train Up a Child…thru August 23rd the total received was $ 523 (Jar—$ 312; Sunday School
offerings—$ 211). Thirty-five children will receive a year’s tuition at the church run schools in our
companion Synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cameroon. Now that Sunday School resumes,
we remind all the students (and their parents!) that ½ of the Sunday School weekly offering goes
toward tuition support in Cameroon! The tuition is $15/student, and is primarily used to allow girls and
disabled children to attend church elementary schools.
At the special congregational meeting held on August 9th the vote was 102 yes; 4 no to accept the
congregation council’s recommendation regarding funding of the roof project. As of August 23rd, the
Roof Fund stands at $228,605
As you will read elsewhere, the St. Arbuck’s group (plus others) are hosting a Rummage Sale
September 10-12, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Your donations are appreciated, provided they are in good to
excellent condition. The final day of the rummage sale will be our neighborhood Block Party!
Our continued thanks to Dale Fritz and Dick Newhagen for mowing the church lawn each week!
The recent rain has delayed our roofer’s current projects; once completed, his attention will turn to
replacing our roof. It is expected to take between 20-30 days to complete the work.

Lawsuit update: the defendants to our lawsuit spent Wednesday, August 19th inspecting our building
and some of the “problem areas.” All parties have agreed to a trial date of April 18-29, 2016.
St Dysmas Lutheran Church, our congregation behind the penitentiary walls, is looking for someone
to take over treasurer responsibilities. The workload is about 5 hours a month. Payroll and taxes are
done by an outside firm, so the treasurer’s job is not a difficult job however it is an important one. This
person could serve as a member of our council or a volunteer position not on the council. A music
director is also being sought. If interested in either position, please contact Pastor Bob Chell (605) 338
-1735. St Dysmas’ office is located at East Side, on the second floor.
The barn re-siding is proceeding steadily. Thanks to Mark Weber for spearheading and financing this
project as well as all who have assisted him.
Maybe we have a public relations problem … on Monday, August 24th, we received a phone call where
we were called a “Lotharian” Church.
