Trick question: What did Thomas Edison do for the lightbulb? He didn't invent it - working light bulbs existed in laboratories for 80 years before Edison arrived. Instead, Edison's team made electric light scalable. They turned a theoretical possibility into a daily, lived reality - for billions of people. Today, we are at the same point in the science of behavior change. Advances in behavioral science, plus the growing infrastructure of ubiquitous computing, make it possible to continuously track and nudge behavior. For the first time, practical and effective tools for self-improvement are becoming widely available. "A better you" is the killer app for consumer IoT. Far more than changes in manufacturing or gains in efficiency, applications for behavior change will be visible and personally relevant.
