It is also with great respect that I extend a thank you to past Residents' Association board members for their numerous volunteer hours and the graciousness with which they served our community.

Finally, I am happy to report that we have conducted several great interviews with very strong candidates for Director of Facilities. We are committed to meeting your unique needs with this position. Thank you for your continued support during this process.

“Love is Greek to Me!” Storyteller Lynn Ruehlmann and Cellist Peter Greydanus l Tuesday, Feb. 14 7 p.m. (Community Room)This is a rollicking story of parallel loves told with humor. We all know bits of Greek myths, but how often do we get to see how remarkably pertinent they are to contemporary life? And how often do we have a chance to see how much those connections to myth can enlighten and deepen how we see our own lives?

This hour-long show weaves together the myth-adventure of the marriage of Psyche and Eros with some of the contemporary adventures of storyteller Lynn Ruehlmann and her husband during the lifetime they have spent together.

One of the most exciting elements of this show is that Peter Greydanus, who is a cellist for the Norfolk and Richmond symphonies, adds music in and out of the storytelling throughout the show.

First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for the support and love shown to me and my family after the passing of my Paupau. I miss him already. I want you to know that your thoughts, prayers and well wishes continue to raise my spirit and provide solace. He lived a great life and was fortunate enough to spend his last years here with us.

It is interesting for me to be on the receiving end of the services that we offer here at Warwick Forest and experience firsthand the intangible, true value of this community.

In other news, it is with mixed emotion that I share with you that Tara Smith, owner of Design Alternatives, has decided to retire. Of course we are so happy for her as she begins this new chapter, but she and her “green team” will be greatly missed. We will be hosting a retirement party for her on Thursday, March 23 at 1 p.m. If you would like to join us in wishing her well, please RSVP to Hannah at 886-2200 by Friday, March 17. Tara is looking forward to seeing everyone she has worked with over the years!

Thanks so much!

Neighborhood health and fitnessNational Wear Red Dayl Friday, Feb. 3 February is dedicated to cardiovascular health, as cardiovascular disease is the leading killer in both men and women. Though numbers are decreasing over the years, (28 percent drop in death rates from 2003-2013), high blood pressure has been on the rise (up 8.2 percent over the same time). GO RED this month by doing the following:Get Your Numbers: Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose.Own Your Lifestyle: Stop smoking, lose weight, be physically active and eat healthy.Raise Your Voice: Advocate for more women-related research and education.Educate Your Family: Make healthy food choices for you and your family. Teach your kids  the importance of staying active.Donate: Show your support with a donation of time or money.Source, American Heart Association, Feb 2016.

What’s Your Target Heart Rate? The American College of Sports Medicine recommends moderate intensity exercise for seniors (age 65 and over) between 40-60% of the maximum heart rate. Here’s how to find out your target heart rate: Example, Age=801. To find your maximum heart rate, subtract your age from 220. 220-80=140. 2. 40% intensity = 140 x .40 = 56, and 60% intensity = 140 x .60 = 84.3. Therefore, the target heart rate = 56-84 beats per minute. Vigorous intensity (70-85%) for this age would be 98-119. For more information, or assistance finding your target range, see Ashley in the Body Shop.

Chaplain’s MessageBy Rev. Graham Patterson, Chaplain

Encountering the mysterious and powerful Holy SpiritWe continue with Fr. Goergen and his exploration of the Holy Spirit. Our vision has already been challenged and stretched by his reflections on the “Spirit OUTSIDE the Visible Body of the Church.” This month we will again be challenged by an equally expansive engagement with the Old Testament prophets and sages. Speaking for God, they call into question many of our attitudes, values and perceived self-interest. What these Biblical writers proclaim as pleasing to the Lord and offensive to the Lord may not only surprise us, but also confront us. Reinhold Niebuhr is reported to have said, “God comforts the afflicted, and afflicts the comfortable.” Prophets have not won many popularity contests, but some of them just might be doing what they claim to be doing: speaking for God. Come and see for yourself what they have to say, and what responses they evoke in you. How do we discern who might be speaking for God, and who might be a false prophet?
