DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION REQUIRES BIG DATA Driven by digital innovation, a source of new Artifi cial Intelligence and Big Data opportunities, in early 2015, Natixis began an in-depth assessment of how it could transform the services it provided.

The project team approved plans to consolidate and operate all of its data from portfolio management, fi nancial data and market bank transactions in a new Big Data framework. The aim was to connect users to the billions of available data fl ows and allow them to display them in a Dataviz tool in order to make use of them more quickly and more easily.

At the end of 2015, the IT department decided to implement a Hadoop-based Big Data architecture, and a pilot was implemented, led by Pierre-Alexandre Pautrat, leader for Global Markets, Risks, P&L and Finance Ecosystem.

“As part of our prototype, we deployed Polybase SQL Server, which was supposed to allow us to make massive use of the data stored in our Hadoop clusters. However, we also knew that the main problem withBig Data environments was native and instant data display. It's important to remember that, with Big Data, you can collect billions of data points by tapping into extremely large data fl ows – for marketing purposes, for example – but to display this data instantly, this isn't really the ideal solution. In our case, we needed to quickly fi nd the missing link between the Dataviz tool and our Big Data to make our platform into an effective unit,” remembers Pierre-Alexandre Pautrat.

Natixis began comparing the various tools available on the market. Most did not allow MDX crosstab queries in Microsoft® Excel, did not offer a Kerberos® SSO authentication protocol, or were based on non-scalable technologies.

ULTIMATELYseveral thousand users connected to Big Data through INDEXIMA:fl oor traders, DBA, analysts, IT department.

INDEXIMA'S MULTI-DIMENSIONAL INDEXES MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

In 2016, the Natixis team identifi ed INDEXIMA, which offered a disruptive technology based on multi-dimensional indexes that scan subsets of billions of data points, displaying dashboards instantly.

The missing link had been found. Natixis's Big Data project could fi nally reach its full potential.

Currently, users from project management teams as well as DBAs and analysts have access to Big Data and can work on dynamic crosstabs in SQL and MDX with display times of just milliseconds.

In 2018, thousands of Natixis traders on every trading fl oor in the world will be able to connect to and access billions of data points stored since 2016, decipher trends in the fi nancial markets and optimise their asset and portfolio management.

“All management of fi nancial assets and investment decisions relies exclusively on using Natixis's Big Data. It's safe to say that INDEXIMA has made a major contribution to this,” concludes Pierre-Alexandre Pautrat.

NATIXIS ADOPTED THE INDEXIMA SOLUTION BECAUSE IN JUST A FEW MILLISECONDS, IT IS CAPABLE OF CONNECTING TO AND DISPLAYING BILLIONS OF DATA POINTS IN OUR USERS' DATAVIZ TOOLS, TABLEAU®, EXCEL AND POWER® BI.
