contents EDITOR’S CHOICE Another cycle has run its course and yet another end of year has arrived. With this comes the opportunity to spend quality time with family and loved ones. Personally, my aim is to make this festive season full of relaxation and rejuvenation by not getting too carried away with the madness of the season. Whether you are travelling or staying at home, there are a host of opportunities to enhance wellness, through movement, stillness, nurture and love.

December is a great time to get in touch with your inner gourmet as feasts and celebrations abound. I’m personally looking forward to long lunches surrounded by people I love. Our Festive Issue turns the menu

around with tips on getting creative in the kitchen and looking at easy to prepare food suited to our South African climate. We have loads of delicious foods you can take along as a gift to your dinner parties. We also have piles and piles of amazing gift ideas from bodycare products to green living and décor. Every year, the world seems to become a little crazier and time slips by quickly. Knowing your loved ones, their needs, wants, dreams and passions is so important for fulfilling and relevant relationships. We highlight the different love languages and how you can communicate love effectively. To rejuvenate body mind and soul, infuse some quiet moments into each day. Whether you go away to a retreat or just spend moments in solitude or silence, use our article on Retreats to inspire you.

It’s always tempting to overindulge or over exert ourselves in the midst of parties and socialising. We’ve highlighted common issues and solutions to help you thrive over this special time. For movement junkies, read our feature on some daring dance moves. And for that big night out, we help you look good whilst being eco savvy. Spend time reflecting, relaxing and rejuvenating. Choose to be kind to yourself and take the opportunity to revive, reinvent and reinforce healthy habits and meaningful relationships.

Wishing all our readers a Happy Festive Season from all of us at Wellness Warehouse.

Yours in WellnessDr Sean Gomes, Managing Director

The Menu

Whether your December plans involve long lunches and festive

dinners for more people than usual, or you’re determined to only spend time with a limited number of beloveds, food will no doubt be centre stage. Work out an exciting entertainment schedule where you can whip up festive ingredients without too much fuss. Add a beautiful and healthy dimension to entertaining with teas that increase digestion and cleanse the palate. Like any small mid-course or palate cleanser, tea is in one sense a great flavour bridge from one course to the next.

Pairing food with tea is like paring food with wine; it brings out the subtle flavours of both the tea as well as the food but unlike wine, tea can be served throughout the day. For an even more entertaining experience pair both tea and wine with your meal. Even though there is much to learn about the numerous styles and flavours of tea, pairing it with your food relies greatly on your palate and personal preference.

HOT ROAST DINNERS WITH SPICY SOUPS TO START MAY SOUND TEMPTING IN JULY,

BUT WHAT SUMMER WEATHER WANTS IS EASY GOING, LIGHT AND COOL FOOD. SO,

TURN YOUR MENU ON ITS HEAD BY SERVING UP THESE OPTIONS:

SoupSipSERVE A TRIO OF COLD SOUPS IN TOT GLASSES:

Roast butternut in a hot oven with a sprinkling of cinnamon. Once cooled, use an electric

blender to whisk with red chilli powder and orange juice.

Top with freshly chopped watercress.

TEA PAIRING SUGGESTION: Chai & Cinnamon Rooibos

Blend chopped cucumber, plain yoghurt and dill leaves to a smooth consistency.

TEA PAIRING SUGGESTION: Camomile Rooibos or Green Rooibos with Mint

Roast sweet potatoes in the oven and peel once cooled. Puree with black turtle beans,

cream cheese, black pepper and nutmeg.

TEA PAIRING SUGGESTION: Camomile Rooibos or Chai

Cold Roast Chicken Stuff with crushed almonds, dried apricot and lemon. Before roasting, rub a little red chilli

powder over the chicken for a glowing colour and a touch of fire in the taste.

Crunch! Once the chicken is roasted and cooled, remove the stuffing and roll into small balls – serve

on wholegrain crackers with a tiny dash of cottage cheese and a mint leaf. These can be

served with the soup starters, or with the main meal. To keep your chicken moist, and for a

slightly tropical twist, add coconut cream to the stuffing mix.

TEA PAIRING SUGGESTION: Chai Rooibos, Buchu Rooibos,

Lemongrass & Ginger Rooibos or Green Rooibos with mint.

Cold Red Roast Vegetables For a dash of colour on the table, slow roast red peppers, butternut, beetroot and red onion.

Once roasted, cool down and serve with cooked red quinoa and a topping of crushed

sunflower seeds and chopped peppadews.

TEA PAIRING SUGGESTION: Chai Rooibos or Berry Flower Tea.

Gourmet Greens Going green has never been easier. Steam baby asparagus stems, using lemon and black

pepper-infused water, then lightly fry in lemon garlic butter. Chop up flat green beans,

avocado and green figs. Toss together and top off with baby pea tendrils, onion sprouts and

thinly sliced brie or even goat milk cheese. Thinly slice the chicken and serve on a platter

with the veg. Add even more colour to the table with fresh gooseberries tossed in feta and

black pepper with a dash of your favourite balsamic.

TEA PAIRING SUGGESTION: Lemongrass & Ginger Rooibos or Green Rooibos with Mint

Table Water Serve cold water with lemon and lime slices and chopped mint leaves.

TEA PAIRING SUGGESTION: Lemongrass & Ginger Rooibos or Berry Flower Tea

For a really quick meal that’ll keep you at the table for hours (and out of the kitchen), separate all your usual salad ingredients into small bowls and let everyone invent their own mix.

Add interesting surprises with pomegranate seeds, anchovies, beetroot carpaccio, roasted pine nuts, red grapes, chickpeas, mint, sprouts, dried olives and loads of leaves with all the different lettuce varieties and additional leaves like rocket, coriander, watercress, clover and parsley.

Make these dressings for a burst of flavour: 1. Warm honey on low heat and add grated ginger and lemon zest. As it cools, mix in virgin olive oil and a touch of balsamic. Make the day before.

2. Finely chop onions and fry lightly before adding rosemary and crushed basil leaves. Add three tablespoons of red wine. As it cools, add in garlic-infused olive oil and a pinch of red chilli powder. Make the day before.

3. Whisk cream and mayonnaise (1/3 mayonnaise to 2/3 cream) and add a dash of white wine and salt for a truly creamy experience. If this is too decadent, replace the mayo with plain yoghurt. Make this just before serving.

The Treat Company makes authentic sweets and treats with natural flavours and no preservatives, look for their gluten free and sugar free options.

these sweet treats will get your taste buds dancing.

this non-alcoholic celebratory grape juice is a specialist cultivar for absolute discerning taste.

When you eat with utmost enjoyment and love your meal, even if the food is rich, your digestion will work optimally. If you eat bland food you don’t like, your body will digest reluctantly. Our message for the season is to eat what you love. Use the healthy version of your favourite indulgences, and if there is something completely decadent you can’t resist, rather than abstaining, eat a small portion to satisfy your taste buds.

PARCHEDIt’s not difficult to become dehydrated, especially if you’re out and about and busy. Keep water readily available. If you do find yourself dehydrated and feeling nauseous, lightheaded and headachy, try these tips:

•Fruit is a great source of water and will help you regain what you’ve lost. Bananas are packed with potassium, which you’ll need if you’re dehydrated. Also munch on watermelon, strawberries and cucumbers

•Eat bland food. Stomach cramps are a common symptom of dehydration, help the problem by sticking to plain food like crackers, rice or potatoes

•Flaky, itchyskin can also result from being dehydrated. Use a salt rub after bathing to smooth and restore skin and relieve itching

If symptoms aren’t relieved within a few hours, consider a visit to your local pharmacy or health store for a good rehydration mix that’ll get your electrolyte levels up to optimum.

OUCH! Isn’t it strange that toothache always comes just when the world has shut down for the day? Stave the pain until you can visit your dentist with these tried and tested home remedies:

• Cloves contain natural anaesthetic, so either rub clove oil on the tooth, or place a clove in your mouth next to the pain

• Smooth a little menthol vapour rub on your cheek closest to your sore tooth and cover it with a warm cloth

• Ignore the tooth and go for pressure. Using an ice cube, massage one hand on the v-shape between your thumb and index finger for five to seven minutes

•Placeahot (ashot as youcan) teabag over your sore tooth for immediate pain relief. Alternatively place a piece of raw potato over the affected area

•Wheatgrassis a fantastic way to stave off tooth decay, and it’s a great pain reliever too as it draws out toxins that may be causing the ache. You can either take wheatgrass tablets, juice it and rinse your mouth out several times or slurp back a tot

TRAVEL TOOL KITIf you’re travelling, remember these essentials:

•Teatreeoil. This is fantastic for cleaning cuts and wounds, and is the perfect foil to thrush: mix a few drops with plain almond oil, roll a tampon through this mixture. Insert and leave for at least an hour. Add a few drops to bath water if using a hotel bath.

• Wet wipes. Travelling can be a sticky and dirty business. A quick, fresh wipe will keep you feeling clean and refreshed and can double as loo paper if you’re in a sticky position.

•Eyepadsandearplugs. It can be difficult falling asleep in strange places and you can never be sure of the light and noise levels. Keep these two essentials close to ensure a good rest. Use malleable earplugs so they mould to the shape of your ear and don’t cause discomfort during the night.

• Laxative. Pack some laxatives, strange bathrooms and a disrupted routine has a way of blocking up the stomach.

EYES WIDE SHUT It’s the morning after the night before and you’re due at yet another soiree. But, a lack of sleep and too much of a good thing have left you with swollen eyes. Try these quick fix tips:

• Tea time.Seep a tea bag in hot water for three to five minutes and allow to cool slightly. Place the teabags gently over your closed eyes. Caffeine filled tea helps constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling. Herbal teas like chamomile contain natural anti-irritants for a soothing infusion. Keep your seeped teabags in the fridge for a quick pick me up before going out again.

• It’s not an oldwives tale – cucumbers’ astringent properties constrict blood vessels to reduce swelling and they’re also deliciously cool to the touch.

•Egg on your face really works. Whip up one or two egg white and smear under your eyes – this will tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of puffiness.

HIGHFLYER If you’re planning on a trip across the globe, you don’t want your time away to be eaten up with feeling bedraggled and sleepy.

• When travelling across time zonesget into the local timeslot as quickly as possible. Bodies react well to sunlight - it tells your brain to reduce the sleep-inducing melatonin during daylight hours. So, put yourself in the sun as soon as you land. If you arrive at midday, give your body another cue by eating your usual lunchtime fare, rather than breakfast or dinner.

•Duringlongjourneys, makesureyoumovearound – it may not be easy to give your body a workout when you’re squashed into

an aeroplane, car or bus seat, but get up and move around as often as possible. This will ward off stiffness and keep your mind and body revitalised. It also reduces the risk of developing a blood clot in your legs.

• Although it’s tempting to tipple whileyou’re hurtling through the sky, stay away from alcohol on your journey and dink water to ensure you stay hydrated.

Holiday Stress

ButtonsBy Glenn-Douglas Haig

At last it’s time to relax, unwind and let our cares soak away into the blue ocean... if you don’t wake up wanting to strangle the kids fighting over the X Box, or flatten the woman who just stole your parking at the mall, or bulldoze your way past the hordes on the beach...

Holidays can sometimes be more stressful than work time because life carries on; groceries have to be bought, meals prepared, houses cleaned, children entertained and the list goes on. Being prepared is key to ensuring our holidays are as rejuvenating, de-stressing and soul-nurturing as they are intended to be.

Some useful holiday tips:

• Gather the family at the beginning ofthe holiday and assign each member a general area of responsibility – if they’re little, let it just be their sleeping areas.

•Chooseatimeofdaythatyouare ‘offduty’ completely - make sure everyone knows this.

•Useyourofftimeto‘activelyrelax’.Geta massage, play some meditation CD’s or have a sundowner on the beach. Playful exercise in any form is also a very good stress buster.

•Plantripstotheshopsasfaraspossibleto avoid daily elbow fights with manic trolley pilots.

•Remember thateveryoneelse is tryingto relax too, so take a chill pill and smile when the harassed shopper grabs the last carton of fat-free... you can afford to drink some full cream today.

Above all, remember to fill your heart with gratitude, be kind on the roads and as my dear late grandfather would say in his posh British accent, “Don’t let the bastards get you down!”

PEACE PARTY See your New Year in with deep and prayerful intention by joining monk Gen Pagpa in a celebration with a difference.Make a New Year resolution to invite

more calm into your life by learning meditation. Meditation is an incredible life practice that can empower you and teach you to keep your cool no matter what the external circumstances might be. Moving from focusing on the outward world to rather monitoring your inner world and being in control of the response you choose makes a huge difference to your state of mind. Controlling the external world is not within our power but controlling our inner world certainly is. As Ceshe Kelsand Cyatso, Author of Transform your Life, says, Happiness and

Suffering are states of Mind and so the main causes of happiness and suffering cannot be found outside the mind. The real source of happiness is a peaceful mind. It may take a while for this concept to hit home but when it does there is an amazing shift that allows you to take responsibility for how you are feeling. Without deeper thought, life will always consist of frustrations about the noisy neighbour, the cancelled flight, the flaky friend, the late payment or any other of the many things that irritate us. With a meditative mind these things become much less disturbing and entirely less relevant.

The evening will involve Reflection, Renewal and Prayers for World Peace on December 31st at 21 Loch Rd, Rondebosch. Relax in blessed peace with an evening of special guided meditations and prayers interspersed with a delicious vegetarian supper. Resolve to be the change you want to see in the year ahead.

Cost: R100 for the whole evening. Tel: 021 685 3428 Web: www.meditateincapetown.org

We travel 16km’s out of Swellendam to try out a yoga retreat and see

how relaxed one can actually get from two days of ‘pranayama in paradise’.

This was no ordinary retreat. Marlien Wright former suburban girl but newly stationed at Somerset Gift Farm has a gentle and beautiful energy that gives every yoga class an incredible depth and dimension. She’s playful too and completely non-judgmental. “These are the classes and schedule but there is no pressure, participate in whatever you want to or do your own thing,” she says. ‘Your own thing’ could be anythingfrom nature walks exploring the farm, rowing down the river, fishing, gazing at the horses in the nearby pastures, curling up on the stoep reading or simply sleeping.

Three hours from Cape Town (I say three hours because it’s so tempting to stop at all the farm stalls along the way, you inevitably slow the two hours into three) you turn

onto a dirt road for a few kilometres until you almost bump up against a mountain so spectacular you have to remind yourself to breathe out. Just in front of the mountain, part of the Langeberg range, is a river, in front of that is a row of cute little cottages. Ours was called Fish Eagle and had a huge fireplace, a perfect little kitchen, a patio to laze on, comfy beds and a view looking across the river to the mountain. It’s the kind of place you don’t have to settle into, you automatically feel at home. We ambled off to the 5pm yoga class, a short walk up the path. Marlien’s studio has huge windows that look onto the mountain with impressive wooden beams running the width of the ceiling. Being in the studio was inspiration in itself. Her classes are very well choreographed and leave space for you to work really hard or to take it gently. We ended off with a transformative meditation that made it very easy to change pace, leave the city behind and fast track relaxation. All the meals

werevegetarianinspiredby‘TheCaketheBuddha Ate’, (Jacana). Think spiced lentil dahl with coconut milk, veggie cake Bhaji’s, rolled leaves with quinoa, pesto and beans, butternut and beetroot salad with magical dressing, the food was delicious – totally satisfying even for the carnivores among us. “There is an organic farm close by and we are privileged to be able to get an ample supply of fresh organic produce,” explained Marlien. The programme included yoga classes, morning and afternoon, a creativity workshop and energy healing workshop. Even when there isn’t a scheduled yoga retreat, Somerset Gift Farm is a beautiful place to spend a weekend or even a week for that matter. It is also perfect for children and has a number of self catering cottages. For details on upcoming yoga retreats, contact Marlien on Cell: 076 508 7188, [email protected], www.somersetgift.co.za

SHARE SOME FESTIVE CHEERMake the festive season work for you by doing your gift shopping early on in the month. Pop a few extra treats in your trolley to take with to parties and dinner engagements. A few bottles of bubbly, some good quality coffee or a beautiful candle are lovely gifts to present to a host.

DINNER PARTY: It’s always appropriate to bring something for the host of a

dinner party. A bottle of good wine, box of chocolates or flowers is still widely acceptable. Candles also make lovely giveaways, for something a little different. It’s not appropriate to give a bottle of perfume or something more intimate, and you don’t need to spend a fortune – the message you are sending with your gift needs to be one of appreciation for the meal to come, the time and effort afforded and the joy of time spent together.

STAYING OVER: If you’ve been invited to stay at someone’s home or holiday

cottage, try to bring a gift that’s special or meaningful, such as something that’s unique to your own town or neighbourhood – especially if you’re going overseas. Other ideas include a coffee table book that reflects your hosts style or interest; a basket of gourmet kitchen essentials, such as infused olive oil; a beautiful vase or ornamental bowl (although be sure you know their taste); specialised teas; or a selection of organic coffee.

26

Giving & ReceivingYou don’t have to believe in Santa Clause to be caught up in the gift frenzy of December – from acquaintances to hosts, there’s a long list of what may be expected of you.

4Occasions to give >

everything you need to live life well

IF SOMEONE BRINGS YOU A FOOD OR DRINK OFFERING THAT DOESN’T FIT IN WITH YOUR PLANNED MEAL, DON’T FEEL OBLIGED TO SERVE IT. SIMPLY THANK THEM AND SAY YOU LOOK FORWARD TO ENJOYING IT IN

THE FUTURE.

NOTE

YOURS IS IN THE MAIL: If someone who wasn’t on your

gift list gives you a present, accept it gracefully and thankfully, but don’t feel obliged to give one in return. And certainly don’t say that you’ll give them their gift the next time you see them. Also, you really don’t have to match gifts Rand for Rand. It’s much more important to stick to your own budget, and a gift that’s well-thought out will most likely be appreciated more than a very expensive one.

ALMOST STRANGERS: Finding the right present for a new relative

or acquaintance can be taxing. First, find out as much as possible about their interests (even just a favourite colour will help), and then choose something that you feel reflects who they are. Explain the reasons you chose the particular gift (for example, rose-scented, handmade soap could mean they are timeless, like the beauty of a rose) – this way, your relatively generic gift will take on a special meaning. It’s also now become acceptable to give gift vouchers, what used to seem like a cop-out is now seen as a way of ensuring the person you’re giving to gets exactly what they’d like.

Make Your Own Wrapping PaperMost mass-produced wrapping paper you find in stores is not recyclable and ends up in landfills. Instead, here's a great chance to get creative! Wrap presents with old maps, the comics section of the newspaper, or children's artwork. Or use a scarf, attractive dishcloth, bandana, or some other useful cloth item. If every family wrapped just three gifts this way, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields.

Buy Energy-Saving Holiday LightsDecorate your house with LED lights that use 90 percent less energy than conventional holiday lights, and can save your family on your energy bills during the holiday season! LED lights are available at many major retailers, Hardware stores and Wellness Warehouse Green Store.

Add Organic and Local Foods to Your Holiday FeastSupport local family farmers who grow sustainable, organic meat and produce. Not only does it taste better and is much healthier for you, you'll be doing your part for the planet too.

Fierce is the African version of Zumba. It gets your heart pumping,

your body moving and your feet stomping. Bodies just keep on moving especially with African tribal house beats artfully played by DJ Dino MoranI

My first experience was a class held in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness. It was at the Gardens Virgin Active gym and was much more high energy than I thought it would be. Who would have thought a dance class could give such an overall body workout, could improve strength, increase endurance and provide a natural high, not to mention a few laughs, all in one.

Movements like swinging, stamping, kicking, jumping and shaking are all actions natural to our bodies. I especially loved the dance moves inspired by daily living activities like sowing seeds, washing windows, icing the cake – all of which required hip shaking and body shimmying.

Fierce is a wonderful concept of dance and movement that also celebrates our African heritage. Teva Scarborough, the dance instructor who created Fierce, says, “When I put a few tribal-inspired movements into my dance classes at Virgin Active, people really responded. Tribal dance also lets you tap into your warrior energy and experience your power as a woman.”

Fierce is also about letting go of the misconceptions about being the perfect dancer and just celebrating body movement. “It is a space where you can just be you and stop worrying about what you think you should look like. A lot of people believe they can’t dance because they never danced as a child,” says Teva.

“But if you look in tribal cultures they all dance – young, old, fat, thin, short or tall. It’s just about you having fun with your body in the moment in the music. Anybody can do it.”

Fierce dance classes are available in Virgin Active clubs countrywide. Find more details on www.virginactive.co.za

All of us have something that makes us feel loved. We’re all individuals,

Everyone has a different expression of love, find out how those closest to you feel more loved

What makes you feel loved? Do you need to receive a gift or is a hug a better expression of love for you, perhaps its all about someone giving you quality time or verbalising appreciation of an achievement you have made.

33www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Because we all express and receive love in different ways, understanding what these expressions are is essential to being able to effectively love and be loved. Gary Chapman, who created the five love languages, says that if you show someone love in a language they don’t understand, they’re simply not going to feel loved.

You may give love differently to how you recognise receiving love, so it’s a great exercise to identify what makes you feel loved, how you show love and what makes your loved ones understand they are loved. Here are five identified expressions of love. Go through your family and see which love language they resonate with. Then make sure you practice the one they recognise.

Words of Affirmation This is about giving compliments or words of encouragement. If you feel elevated and treasured when someone affirms you with words, then this is a key love language. Take note of how your child responds to your words of affirmation.

Quality Time Spending time together, walking, playing, going away on holiday, even doing the grocery shopping. If you just love being with a person and feel cherished when someone takes time out to simply be with you, then you need to gear your life up to include that in your routine. How does your child feel about spending time with you?

Physical Touch A hug, a ruffling of hair, sitting close, holding hands. Some people simply aren’t huggers, but if your child responds well to simple touch, be cognisant of the need to do more of it.

Receiving Gifts Everyone loves a present, but some people only feel loved when they are given a gift. This can be a difficult one, especially if your love language isn’t receiving gifts – but it’s important to understand this language nonetheless. Gifts don’t have to be expensive, though, just well thought out and personalised.

Acts of Service If when your partner makes the bed on a Saturday morning, you get all gooey and adoring, this is your love language. Look at how acts of service impact your child (like cleaning out their school bag, or tidying their room) and make an effort to do it more often if this is what makes them glow.

LOVING ME, LOVING YOU

5 LOVE LANGUAGES Originally inspired by Gary Chapman >

• We don’t all have just one love language, but it’s generally on a sliding scale, the top of the scale being where you feel completely appreciated, adored and loved, to the bottom where you’re simply not moved at all. Loving in a language that isn’t your key vernacular might take some getting used to, but it’s worth the effort because the results are always amazing.

• Knowing your own love language and communicating it to those who love you will effect the amount of love you perceive you are receiving. Also, if those around you understand what makes you feel loved, they in turn will feel loved when you do something in your own love language – they’ll know you’re doing it with love, even if it isn’t in the way they naturally receive love.

• Once you understand the different languages everyone speaks and responds to, you can tailor the way you function. For example, if your daughter needs quality time, but your love language is giving or receiving gifts, taking her shopping with you when you buy her a gift will feed both your love languages. She’ll benefit from the time spent together, while you’ll feel you’ve given love by the gift you get her.

• Love is always about give and take, communication and understanding. Taking the time to truly know someone is a love language all on its own. To create a harmonious and deeply loving relationship with your children and loved ones, take time to learn what really makes them tick.

While you may have your five-minute beauty routine down pat,

sometimes a few extra steps can help you go from good-looking to simply stunning. Glamorous can also be natural and eco-friendly. Here’s how:

THINK ECO Before going on your summer wardrobe shopping spree give a thought to Eco fashion. This doesn’t mean you have to go out wrapped in tree bark, but organic cotton, hemp, bamboo fabrics and the like will help you do your bit for the environment.

Upcycling is the new buzzword, so give your existing wardrobe a revamp, or find a good dressmaker who can jazz up an old garment for you. Most women have a little number in their cupboard that hasn’t been worn – check with your friends and see if you can swap out some of these gotta-have but never-worn treasures.

GO DEEP Get hold of a deeply moisturising or revitalising face mask and apply before bathing. Choose one that dries when it’s on as this will tighten your skin, effectively removing any traces of puffy eyes.

Go natural: Bentonite clay is full of natural minerals and is a magnet for absorbing toxins.

Go organic: Naturys and Esse are both organic and natural with no nasties you wouldn’t want to put into your body.

SPLISH SPLASH Take a luxurious bath, scented with your favourite pure essential aromatherapy oil and add a dash of bergamot to ensure you’re truly relaxed. If you’re one of the brave, jump under a cold shower after your bath and rub yourself dry vigorously with a rough towel to get your circulation moving and revitalise your skin.

SMOOTH MOVESChoose a good un-scented all over moisturiser – slather it on and walk around naked while the cream is absorbed or go for a body oil. Happy Heart from Maroma has an incredibly addictive aroma; it absorbs completely and won’t make you feel sticky.

SENSUALITYToo much is never a good thing. Place a dab of your favourite perfume in the crook of your elbow, behind your knees, and at the base of your throat. A neutral roll on crystal deodorant won’t compete with your perfume, but will keep you feeling fresh.

TOP IT OFFWhatever your hair style, the most important thing is to ensure you look well groomed and that you’ve taken care. For long hair, a simple, loose bun at the base of your neck that allows a few tendrils to escape is always elegant and easy. Shorter hair, experiment with clipping your fringe to the side to enhance your eyes. For short and curly hair, add some beautiful earrings. If your hair is taking strain with sun, colour or heat styling cover it in coconut oil for an hour before you wash and repair some of the dryness. Don’t try any new hair products for the first time on the night – you may end up unintentionally donning a wet-look, or being late because you had to start all over again.

LETS FACE ITMakeup and fashion trends dictate that natural is good. That doesn’t mean you have to go around completely naked, though. A light base or tinted moisturiser for even skin tone and neutral colours will help you enhance your features. The rule of thumb is to choose either your eyes or your lips as highlight points (so bright red lipstick needs to be paired with fairly toned-down eyes, but a nude shade of lipstick can be coupled with more intense eyes).

TIPS AND TOESDon’t forget to give yourself a quick mani-pedi – the trick once again is to ensure you look well groomed. You don’t need to display bright red talons, but chipped any colour is a definite no-no. If you don’t have time, rather keep your nails naked, clipped and buffed.

did you know?According to Earth Pledge, at least 8,000 chemicals are used to turn raw materials into textiles and 25% of the world's pesticides are used to grow non-organic cotton. This causes irreversible damage to people and the environment, and still two thirds of a garment's carbon footprint will occur after it is purchased.

AVAILABLE AT WELLNESS WAREHOUSE

FOOD To keep a good party going, you need to supply sustenance. But, if catering is not your forte, bite-sized snacks do just as well as a full course meal. Keep it light and easy with cold finger food and healthy snacks like sliced raw veggies and dip, bowls of fruit and nuts, or make use of crackers topped with a variety of cheeses, mussels, anchovies, capers and fresh herbs.

If you have more people than plates, use skewers to create colourful combinations of fresh produce mixed with different cheeses and pickles. Fruit skewers are also deliciously easy to create.

If even that’s a taxing thought, get hold of some whole wheat ready-made pizza base and ask your guests to bring their favourite pizza toppings. All you’ll need is a rolling pin and a hot oven to create a gourmet pizza feast.

Fondue is great for summer evenings outside, and all you need to prepare is a few interesting sauces and readily chopped or sliced meat, vegetables or cheese. Halloumi is fantastic in a fondue as it crisps beautifully without melting into the pot. Mushrooms, peppers, even par-

boiled baby potatoes also work well and are always a hit. Home made whole grain bread is always a great accompaniment to cheese fondue.

BEVERAGES Throwing a party can be expensive, and it’s no longer necessary for you to provide absolutely everything. Ask your guests to bring what they’d like to drink, but ensure you’ve got some of the essentials that appeal to your group of friends. Keep a store of fresh cold water and loads of ice. Remember to ensure you’ve enough glassware for all your guests’ drinks. Be consumer aware, though, and rather borrow or hire glasses than buying more than you’ll need at other times of the year.

MUSIC Music is such an important part of our lives, its impact on your mood is unsurpassable, whether it lifts you up, grounds you, stirs memories or simply touches your soul. Aldous Huxley said, “After silence, that which comes closest to expressing the inexpressible is music”, and Frederick Nietzsche said that life without music would be a mistake.

Everyone has a favourite list of songs. Get your guests to bring their top ten songs to share. It’ll also be a great conversation piece when memories come flooding back of past parties or times in their life that were special or meaningful.

YOUR SUMMER PROMISEget in shape the responsible way

Hoodia controls hunger without nervousness, upset stomach, racy heart, elevated body temperature or sleep interruption. It can be safely and comfortably taken at night when snacking is most prevalent. Hoodia is perfect for anyone who struggles with hunger, cravings or portion size. It is the perfect way to control appetite while re-training eating habits. It is not a stimulant nor does it possess any thermogenic properties. Permanent weight loss usually dictates that changes in one's eating habits must take place. Unfortunately, most people find it difficult to make the necessary dietary changes when they are hungry. That is why Hoodia is so effective. A prominent manufacturer cites a clinical trial involving 18 human volunteers that found Hoodia consumption reduced food intake by about 1000 calories per day compared to a placebo group. Should be used in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet and exercise.
