Many thanks to our ownphotographer Harold Hazzardfor capturing these moments!
Pastor Allie and husband Barry
Pastor Allie accepts FirstLutheran’s call to become our
next pastor!
August 2012
Dear People of First,
I am delighted to be called as your newpastor.
I have known for 9 months now that Iwould be moving. That was a decision madewhen Holy Trinity and Immanuel Jamestownprepared to form a parish. I would remain to help them “start up “ togetherbut then seek a new call so that they would be able to call a new pastortogether. During these nine months my prayer was for God to send me on anew adventure in ministry and mission. That prayer is now answered. I amready, willing, and excited to be joining you in your journey of faith.
Where that journey takes us will unfold as we walk together. Howministry and mission will develop along the way remains to be seen, but as Ihave interviewed your call committee and council and spoken with some ofyou July 21st and 22nd, the purpose was clear. First Lutheran Church wants tostrengthen its mission in the community. We will gather together inworship, prayer, bible study and community to be strengthened in faith. And we will go out, sent by God, in mission. What fun we will havediscerning our first steps in mission together as we follow the light of Christ!
I would like to invite you to join me for the months of August andSeptember in regularly praying one of my favorite prayers. You haveprobably seen it before; it’s from the vespers service in the ELW and LBW. Ifyou receive the newsletter online, you could print out this page and post theprayer somewhere, such as in your kitchen or on your bathroom mirror, orwhere you sit for daily prayer. Prayer is vital for our life together, and thiswould be a good way to begin our ministry together.
Peace & Joy!

O God,you have called your servants to
venturesof which we cannot see the ending,
by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown.
Give us faith to go out with goodcourage,
not knowing where we go,but only that your hand is leading us
and your love supporting us;through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Pastor Allie didn’t includeeducational info in her brief bio. Some of you have asked, so here itis.
Pastor Allie grew up in southcentral PA in the very small town ofElizabethville. All of her primaryand secondary schooling was therein the Upper Dauphin schoolsystem. For undergraduateeducation, she studied at theUniversity of Miami in Coral Gables,FL, majoring in biology andchemistry and graduating MagnaCum Laud in 1978. She went toMiami with the clear goal ofbecoming a marine biologist.Apparently God had other plans.
After a one year position as oneof two national staff people for theLutheran Student Movement-USA,she began taking some seminarycourses, thinking she would work asa lay campus minister. Again Godhad other plans. Hooked by thetheology studies, she enrolled fulltime at Christ Seminary – Seminexin St Louis, MO, where shecompleted most of her seminaryeducation.
Marrying while at Seminex, shemoved with her husband to NovaScotia Canada. She then completedseminary at Waterloo LutheranSeminary in Waterloo Ontariowhere she graduated in 1986, andwas ordained February 7, 1987.
The Property Committee presided over three important projectsthis past month including new windows for the Pastor’s office, trimming of our trees and bushes and the cleaning of our carpets.
TREE TRIMMINGOn July 10th, D & R TreeService completed oursemi-annual treemaintenance program. The work crew trimmedbranches from hitting
our neighboring houses on the Cortland Avenue and WesternAvenue parking lots. Also branches hitting the Friendship Houseand our neighbor’s house on State Street (along the alleyway).D & R crews also trimmed the Weeping Linden tree in the circle ofthe Western Avenue parking lot as well as the Rittbergerevergreen tree.
NEW WINDOWS – PASTOR’S OFFICEThe PropertyCommittee hasbeen looking atvarious windowreplacementproducts and localinstallation firms. We settled on theWindow Worldproduct meetingour requirement’sat an affordableprice. We agreed upon their 6000 series with all-weld windows with double
pane glass with grids to match our existing windows sealed between the glass. Also sealed between theEnergy Star glass panes will be argon gas to keep the outside heator cold out. The new windows will also be trimmed with exteriorvinyl wrap to eliminate the need for future painting. The PropertyCommittee is also looking to replace windows in the library/

ELCA YouthGatheringBy Rev. Marie C. Jerge,Bishop
Walking Wet is an imagethat describes our lives asbaptized children of God. Ittook on new meaning herein New Orleans when the rains hit and the hordes of youth in colored t-shirts wandered the city streets soaked to the skin. But they did not let it dampen their enthusiasm for learning what it means to be Citizens with the Saints, and practicingdiscipleship, peacemaking and justice.
I have shared some images and stories throughout this week. They are posted on our website... but here are just acouple God moments: Upstate New York Synod groups were housed in a hotel on Bourbon Street. That was a concern, butour youth and adults handled it well and turned it into opportunities for conversation. The surprise came when a homelessman stopped one group and prayed with them and for them!
While working out in the community, one of our young women had some trouble with the heat and needed a trip tothe hospital. After treatment, the doctor offered her (and those with her) a ride back to the hotel.
Each community service group was shepherded by a young adult called a servant leader. One servant leader told usthat he volunteered for the gathering because his friend was coming. After working with the Lutherans for a few days, hesaid that when he returns home, he's going to find an ELCA congregation and get confirmed, because we're a church thatcombines preaching the Word with action.
The program was fabulous, the music astounding, the leaders did an amazing job - but the image that remains in mymind is those groups of colored shirts packing the dome and taking to the streets - rain or shine - learning and living theirfaith in community and service. They are an inspiration! Amazing grace indeed! Page 5
Just over 350 youth and adults from the Upstate NY Synod attended the 2012 Youth Gathering

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
Tracing the tour of one American platoon this bookis not just a tale of the Vietnam War, although it'sconsidered one of the finest books ever aboutcombat. This award winning book is a brutal, sometimes funny, often profound narrative aboutthe human heart—how it fares under pressure, and what it can endure.
“…but those who wait for the LORD shall renew theirstrength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, theyshall run and not be weary, they shall walk and notfaint.” Isaiah 40:31
As we head into the last part of summer, we hope that duringthese months you have had an opportunity to relax, rest and renewyour mind, body and spirit. July was especially busy at First Lutheranthis year. Let’s recap…
During the first week of the month, Pastor Alison Leitzel wasinterviewed by the Church Council and they unanimouslyrecommended to the congregation that she be considered forbecoming pastor of First Lutheran. A letter to all confirmedmembers was mailed announcing this later that week and invitingfolks to come and meet Pastor Allie at an informal “meet and greet”on Saturday, July 21. There were nearly 80 folks came on that warmSaturday evening to meet Pastor Allie and her husband Barry. Thenext day, a special congregational meeting was held immediatelyfollowing the worship service. A secret ballot vote on the questionof calling Pr. Allie to First Lutheran was taken and of the 83 votesthat were cast, 80 were in favor of calling her. Pastor Allie gratefullyaccepted this call!
Summer always seems to be a good time to get all the littlethings around the building done, and this summer was no exception.New energy efficient windows were installed in the pastor’s office aswell as the cleaning of the draperies. The carpets in the office,Hartwick Lounge, the library/chapel and the pastor’s office weresteam cleaned and the trees on the property were trimmed andgroomed by a professional tree company. Steve Carlson, our LayPresident, was responsible for opening and closing the building onSundays and keeping the trash and recycling from building up whileWendy was on vacation during the month. He even had a cleaningcrew come in and take care of the bathrooms for us. New (andrefurbished) air conditioners were installed in the church office andthe Hartwick Lounge during July. It sure makes a difference visitingwith FLC folks on those steamy, summer Sunday mornings.
We rejoice with great grandfather Ted Beebe, great aunt FaithBeebe and great-great aunt Janet Simons as they celebrate the birthof Gabriel Allister Beebe on July 20th. He was born about sevenweeks early, but is doing well at this point opening his eyes all thetime and breathing on his own for most of the day. We also rejoicewith Cindy and Rich Reynders on the birth of their fourthgranddaughter Mckenna May Reynders on July 17th. Laurel Rikerand her family celebrated her father’s 80th birthday on July 14th inthe Hartwick Lounge. On July 28th, Dottie Johnson will be holding ababy shower in Hartwick Lounge for her daughter Alisa’s first baby.Coming up on July 30th, we will be hosting youth from Rush UnitedMethodist Church who will be leading a sports camp and VBS atEmmaus UMC. Then on August 6th, Kristina Kennedy-Babcock will bebringing her CAPS (Capital Area Productions) Theater Camp to FLCfor a week. The Albany Senior Orchestra will begin their weeklyrehearsals on Tuesday, August 21st. We encourage you to stop bybetween 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to give them a listen.
Stay posted to the weekly bulletins and FirstFlash for more information on what’shappening at FLC including the start datefor Pastor Allie. Deadline for articles forthe September issue of The First Word will be onSunday, August 26th!!
Until then … that’s the scoop!

Dear Friends in Christ,
So much has happened since the last EPESUpdate in December 2011. I am excited toshare the work of EPES reflected in thisUpdate --thirty years and we are still going strong! As you will see in the Update, wehad a wonderful Mother´s Day celebration held in Concepción for leaders of thehealth teams and the women from the emergency camps where we have workedsince the earthquake left people homeless over two years ago. We had a verymoving connection between our celebration and the celebration at Prince of PeaceLutheran Church in Clifton Park, NY --a congregation that has supported EPES for 30years! Members of Prince of Peace have visited us in Chile, and members of theEPES staff have worshiped at Prince of Peace --we cherish this and so many otherdeep relationships of love and support that have developed over these years ofshared ministry.
As we look back over these difficult years, our staff in Chile is filled with deepemotion and gratitude for the countless friends who have accompanied us on thisjourney for health, justice, dignity and wholeness. It is an important year for us --inNovember, leaders of the ELCA Global Mission, the Lutheran World Federation, members of Lutheran congregations in the US, and friends and family of EPES staffwill travel to Chile to join hundreds of community health workers and EPES staffand families, members of the emergency camps, public health workers, membersand leaders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile, local human rightsadvocates and other friends to celebrate EPES´ three decades of work.We hope you can join us either in person or in spirit. We would love to receive agreeting from your congregation to our staff and the health teams on this specialanniversary. (If you would like more information about the celebration please sendme an email).
A book I read this year, Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of BoundlessCompassion by the Jesuit priest, Gregory Boyle, made me think so much about ourministry. So many times his reflections on his work with gang members in the statesreminded me of the work we have done with the poor and excluded in Chile. In theintroduction, he says that a fundamental challenge of his stories is simply to changeour lurking suspicion that some lives matter less than others. It reminded meimmediately of our Mother´s Day gathering last year with poor women from fishingcommunities along the coast affected by the earthquake. During the celebration, one of the women turned to Lautaro (the doctor who directs our team in the south)and said, "We have been wanting to ask you all year, why does EPES care about usso much, don´t you know that we are nobodies?" Lautaro, one of the mostcompassionate people I have ever met, wept on the phone telling me that story. Our work, like Gregory Boyle´s, aspires to broaden the parameters of our kinship.Boyle says, "Our common human hospitality longs to find room for those who areleft out. It´s just who we are if allowed to foster something different, somethingmore greatly resembling what God had in mind. Perhaps, together, we can teacheach other how to bear the beams of love, persons becoming persons, right beforeour eyes. Returned to ourselves."
I thank you for walking with us on this journey...for helping broaden theparameters of our kinship and for caring about the lives of the poor in Chile.

Current Lutheran Cluster Outreach Project
The Cluster Churches are collecting school supplies again. So many children benefit from thisparticular outreach project, that we will probably continue it for years. Noted below are ex-amples of supplies that are in high demand. In years gone by, many of these supplies had tobe provided by the teachers themselves. Now, WE CAN HELP THEM!!!
