SPRING CONCERT RECAP

It has been almost 90 years since the Flint Citadel Band played at historic St. Paul's Episcopal church in downtown Flint. But on Sunday, May 15, that hiatus was broken when the Band played it's Annual Spring Concert in St. Paul's ornate sanctuary as the saints looked down from their stained glass perches. The Flint Citadel Band has been sharing its ministry of sacred music for over 100 years; ever since William Beacraft, a foreman at the fledgling Buick Motor company, began to bring Salvationists to Flint for employment from Canada and England. Ever since that time Flint has had one of the Army's premiere brass bands. Present for this year’s Spring Concert were Central Territory Commanders, Commissioners Paul & Carol Seiler, Retiring Divisional Commanders, Lt. Colonels Norman & Diane Marshall, and a good size crowd. Bandmaster Matthew Rowland and Deputy Bandmaster Andrew Bell presented a diverse program

of music ranging from an upbeat version of Onward Christian Soldiers called Onward to a classical piece; Mendelssohn’s Themes from 'The Italian' Movements. 1, 2, and 4. Commissioner Paul Seiler shared a devotional drawn from Psalm 40. Verses 2-3 of that psalm say, He

lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. (NIV) Commissioner Siler told the audience that God offers each of us a firm place to stand and a new song to sing, not the same tired old song we've been singing. As a result many, hearing our new song, will trust in the Lord. The concert ended with the band playing the moving piece God Be With You Til We Meet Again.

Our third year of Picnics in the Park will begin Monday, June 20. This program was the first program to establish relationships with families in the Grand Traverse neighborhood. Each year we come out with deeper friendships, new connections made, and experience growth in our corps youth programs because of “Picnics”. Would you like to get involved? It is so easy and so much fun. We’re looking for people to do crafts and Bible lessons with kids, help serve lunches, and whatever else kids and families would enjoy.

SUMMER DAY CAMPSUMMER DAY CAMPSUMMER DAY CAMPSUMMER DAY CAMP Do you, or someone you know, have children and can’t figure out what you are going to do with them this summer? Have you even thought that far ahead? Well, we have! Summer is rapidly approaching and we here at the Flint Citadel Corps Community Center are working hard to make Summer Day Camp fun and successful. Summer Day Camp will run for eight weeks, starting Monday, June 20, and ending Friday, August 26. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with before/after care provided two hours before and two hours after for an additional fee.

Day Camp is for children entering first grade through eighth grade. Sorry, high school students, you’re getting too old! Parents, don’t worry, you don’t have to put up with your high school students staying home all summer doing nothing! Sign your high school student up to be a Student Leader! This position will provide your high school student with the opportunity to mature their leadership skills and participate in all the fun summer time activities. The registration fee is $10.00 per child. The weekly fees for the year are as follows:

First Child: $60.00 Second Child: $35.00 Additional Children: $15.00 Before/After Care: $10.00/Per Child

The fees cover the cost of the Summer Day Camp t-shirts, field trips, two snacks a day and many more fun filled activities. Lunch will notnotnotnot be provided so you’ll have to pack a lunch. Come grab some Summer Day Camp flyers to pass out at your work place, your neighborhood and to all your family. Not able to do that? Then pray! Pray for the success of our Day Camp. Pray for our staff. Pray for the kids who come into our building through this program, that somehow their life will be impacted, in a positive manner.

Mission: Literacy is a program recently adapted by Prime Time After School to promote reading and writing with some of our students. Assisted by a handful of volunteers who come and teach on a rotation several times per week, the after school program is attempting to target children they feel can gain the most out of this literacy program. A typical session includes reading Bible stories in picture-book form, learning vocabulary words from the book, and playing rhyming, vocabulary, and grammar games with the children. “Rhyming is not my favorite,” says Kia Lillard, a 5 year old kindergartener who has been taking the Mission: Literacy classes, “it's really hard.” When asked what her favorite part of the lesson was, she deliberated over the question for some time, “I think... Everything, reading, spelling, games. We learned about 'in the beginning,' and creation, and Adam and Eve. I like those stories.” The program is not just for young students, however. The hope is to engage students at multiple ages and educational levels to help them succeed in reading, writing, spelling, and grammar in school.

Community Ministries at Commissioning Weekend

Again this year Tom and Rachel will have the opportunity to promote Ignite and Community Ministries during Commissioning Weekend. They have secured a table at Resource Connection which they will share with our friends from St. Louis Temple who are also invested in community ministry work. Brochures about Ignite will be shared, which we hope will interest people to become a part of Ignite for the coming year. Additionally, Tom and Rachel will be involved in a discussion on urban ministry. It was through this discussion last year that Dave Mantel was recruited for Ignite.

On Sunday, June 19, Edward Hackett and Inga Dismukes invite you to witness their marriage. The marriage ceremony will be held following the morning Holiness Meeting at 12:30 (or 20 minutes after the close of the service). The wedding will be over by 1:00 pm and you still have plenty of time to celebrate Father’s Day.

Flint Ignite Dave Mantel has entered Level III of The Salvation Army/Charles Lake Discipleship program. This material is useful as a refresher, or in helping a person become more disciplined in their faith. It starts at the basics and works all the way through the deeper aspects of the Christian faith. Currently the Ignite Team is going through “Where Faith and Culture Meet: 6 Sessions On How You Can Engage Your Culture” by Andy Crouch and Christianity Today. This is a six week video/discussion about cross cultural ministry. We have found it to be a great resource and plan on using it in the first few months of the 2011-2012 Ignite year. The team is also reading through the newest version of The Salvation Army Handbook of Doctrine as well as a book by Shane Claiborne and John Perkins called “Follow Me to Freedom: Leading and Following As An Ordinary Radical”. As we go through these books we have group discussions about what we are reading. Currently there are three people interested in being a part of the 2011-2012 Ignite year. We are hoping to have six people be a part of Ignite for 2011-2012. As far as housing the Ignite team, we are working with one of our neighbors about possibly renting one of their houses for the next year.

Songsters to Perform Our own Flint Citadel S o n g s t e r s a r e scheduled to perform at this year’s Congress and Commissioning in Merriville, Indiana June 10-12.

Songster leader, Eric Bell, is working with the Songsters as they prepare to share their ministry in music. The songsters will participate in concurrent concerts on Saturday afternoon, perform as part of a massed choir and present a special piece during the Saturday evening program.

Entries should be 6” x 8” and reflect the time of year or some aspect of the ministry of the Flint Citadel.

PICTURE CONTEST

Scott Holman, principal at Pinehurst Elementary School, has been caught clowning around again. This time we have pictures! The Mt. Morris Schools Parent Involvement leaders came up with the idea of "Race to Read" to honor "March is Reading Month.” Scott came up with his own way to encourage the kids.

The kids read books and logged in the number of hours and book titles. Scott told them he would ride around the school on a tricycle in a clown suit if they went over their goal. With that incentive, the students logged in over 2,000 books for the month.

Scott was true to his word and dressed up in a clown suit, hopped on his tricycle, and took off pedaling around the school grounds to the students gleeful cheers.

Relational Evangelism Study Rachel will be leading a Bible Study on relational evangelism for six weeks this summer. The study will begin Sunday, June 19, at 10am. If you are interested, please see Rachel.

Sundays at The Sal: There are a couple of changes to take note of: 1) We will not have dodge ball during the Summer months.

2) The Match Factory will occur once a month and will focus on service projects in the neighborhood. In June, we will be cleaning and boarding up a property. This will take place on Wednesday, June 8, at 5:30pm. We will leave from the corps at 5:30.

3) Family Bible Study is being revamped. The details are still being worked out. More info will be presented soon.

Christmas in July This year we plan to do our second Christmas in JulyChristmas in JulyChristmas in JulyChristmas in July fund-raiser at limited kettle sites. We have secured sites at the Grand Blanc Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, Fenton Wal-Mart, and we are waiting on a response from the Farmer's Market. Kettles will be out the 3rd and 4th weekends in July (15, 16, 22, and 23). With the tight

My dad was a remarkable man. Born first generation of a German carpenter immigrant, his spirit of adventure and hard work took him a long way. My dad and his father actually built two of the houses we lived in. Although he only had an eighth grade education, his commitment to continuing education at AC led him to be a product checker and supervisor. In my early years, dad taught me a lot about maintaining a house, how to be a hunter and take care of a car. He taught me more than how to just do things. He showed patience, compassion, love and righteous sternness. He was faithful to God through First Reformed Church where we served together as Deacons on the church board. Every child wants a father that he or she can lean on and receive help from with their problems and get guidance. A father that will be there when needed. For those who are not so blessed, there is a Father that is always near to them. He never judges, and loves them more than anyone ever could. He will never leave nor forsake them in their need. Psalm 68:5 “A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.” Psalm 36:7 “How excellent is thy loving kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.” As fathers, how will we be remembered? As fathers who were there when needed? Who gave the support and training to raise socially acceptable adults? Did we provide the spiritual training required in such a volatile and changing world? Not only will our children remember us for our deeds, but we will also have to give an account to God for our lives. May God bless all the fathers at Flint Citadel Corps
