THE G SERIESGAS ACTUATOR

Re-designed for another half century of service to the pipeline industry.

EIM was the innovator in direct gas valve actuation. In fact, EIM was founded in 1949 on the concept of the G Series gas actuator. The G Series was installed on nearly all major

pipeline systems worldwide long before other current brands were even conceived.EIM has re-introduced the G Series actuator with refined engineering to answer the industry’s desire

to have an inexpensive, simple, reliable yet durable gas actuator.

What’s “New” About the G Series?

EIM has retained all the proven strengths of the established G Series, and combined them with advanced safety and efficiency features that were unknown 50 years ago:•  A newer motor with fewer parts and just two gears.•  60% less gas consumption than previous models.•  DOT-approved lockable housing for selector lever

Most of these improvements can even be retrofitted to earlier G units — proving that underneath, it’s still the same rugged actuator that has earned the respect of the pipeline industry for more than half a century.

Recessed handwheel shaft for manual service. Automatic gas shutoff occurs when the unit is manually operated.

Gear-type motor for years of trouble-free service. This design  reduces gas consumption over the previous design by 60%.

Manual selector valve lever with stainless steel padlockable box meeting DOT requirements.

Cam-actuated, end-of-travel poppet valves provide improved shutoff and greater life expectancy over original design.

Gear Housing Details Robust Drive Train

The gear housing is made of cast ductile iron, preci-sion machined to support oversized ball bearings and large steel drive gears. The oversized bearings and gears are submerged in a grease-filled gear case to ensure long, maintenance-free service. A durable geared motor of proven design drives the gear train. (This is an improve-ment over the vane-style motor in the original G Series design.)

Positive Valve LimitsA unique feature of the G Series actuator is the meth-

od in which the limit travel stops are operated and ad-justed. The open and closed limit valves are activated by a very reliable, continual-contact gear train. The travel limit cams are always in step with the valve stroke, even during handwheel operation. These cams are easily ad-justed through a large access port located on the side of the cam housing.

Easy RetrofitsThe G Series actuator typically drives through an ex-

isting or furnished worm gear or bevel gear. This makes retrofits to existing hand operated gate or ball valves very affordable and easy. No need to change valve stems or use of hydraulic oil.

Rapid ResponseBecause the G Series is a gear design, fast stroke times

are possible on large or small diameter valves, allowing for effective ESD applications or basic applications such as “pig launcher” valves.

Simple SizingActuator sizing is accomplished by gear changes only.

All G Series gear housings are the same size but have optional gear combinations to adapt to any valve torque or travel requirement.

InterchangeabilityAnother advantage of the G Series gear driver design

is the ability to move the G unit from one valve to an-other as long as a bevel or worm gear exists. Due to the gear design, actuator orientation does not matter. The concept of the G Series is to simply replace a handwheel with a gas-driven operator.

Gas Control DetailsDesigned for Durability

The gas controls consist of a selector valve block for open or closed command. These blocks are made of highly corrosion-resistant 316-grade  stainless  steel. The selector’s internal com-ponents are stainless steel with static seal O-rings for positive sealing.

Local and Remote OptionsThe actuator selector position can be activated by a

local lever or by remote controlled electric or pneumatic solenoids. This allows for remote valve operation by a command center or by a triggering device such as a “line break” detection device. The local selector valve lever is located on the valve actuator and inside of a DOT-approved stainless steel, lockable box. All of the control options are designed to be compatible and modular.

Limit ValvesLimit valves are the mechanism used to stop the valve

travel at the desired open and closed position. These limit valves are made of stainless steel and are activated when the cam nut makes contact during operation. The me-chanical limit valves have more than 50 years of proven reliability under many adverse conditions. The valve po-sition can be coupled to a direct-mounted limit switch for remote valve position indication. These switches meet all required area classifications.

Supply gas can be locked in On or Off position.

Typical G Series pipeline installation mounted on a 600-class 30” ball valve.

G Series Advantages•  Pneumatic-driven geared motor

(400–1440 psi)•  Direct-power gas (no regulator

required)• Stainless steel controls throughout•  No hydraulic  tanks or control

panels required•  Gear-driven limit valves for reliable

shutoff•  Gear-assisted handwheel drive shaft

for easy and fast manual operation•  Grease filled main gear housing for

maintenance free long life•  Adaptable to most existing bevel or

worm gears•  Geared power train for predictable

and rapid valve stroke•  Interchangeable limit cam gearing

for any valve stroke time•  Ductile iron gear housing provides

durability for any valve application•  Limit travel stops easily adjusted•  Reliable, rugged, compact & low

maintenance

Simply stated, the G Series direct gas actuator is the first actuator to utilize direct natural gas pressure to operate a pipeline valve. Its compact, lightweight design ensures easy installation, versa-tility, and simple maintenance. And thanks to the G’s unique gear train, there’s no need to use reservoir bottles filled with hydraulic oil, and no need for complex control panels.

At the core of the G Series actua-tor  is high-strength steel gearing. To ensure that the drive train is as smooth as it is solid, all power gearing is sup-ported on anti-friction bearings and is grease lubricated.
