On the surface, the entire story of Purim is about wearing masks. Esther had to pretend she was someone else to gain the trust of the king. Mordecai had to protect his identity. The Jewish people, out of fear for their lives, have often had to pretend we were someone else in order to survive. Sometimes we wear masks because we are afraid to reveal ourselves. Our sages, however, teach us that wearing a mask is not meant to help conceal who we really are. In fact, the opposite is true. By covering our faces, our rabbis believe that it is actually easier to show our true selves. It provides us a sense of cover and a feeling of security. Without fear of embarrassment and with an absence of shyness, we can say things we don’t usually say or express ourselves with some anonymity. Living in New Orleans and taking part in Mardi Gras gives us a little extra time to get to know this person within us, the version of ourselves who is a little freer. Our tradition commands us to learn something from the masked version of ourselves. Do our daily inhibitions restrict our expressions of love, joy, and happiness? Do we have anger that comes out that needs to be tempered? Do we have bravery inside us that we didn’t know? The season of the mask is upon us. Let us embrace our local culture with joy and celebration! Let us prepare to gather again in the month of Adar to rejoice once again. Throughout the process of eating, drinking (responsibly) and being merry, may we find the best versions of ourselves behind the masks...and let that person come forward when the masks are put away. From Mask to Mask

As I prepare to enter into what will be my first Mardi Gras season, I can’t help but notice the parallels to the Jewish holiday of Purim. The food, the colors, the indulgence...and of course: the masks. I do not yet own a Mardi Gras mask, but hopefully by the time you read this that will be remedied.
