YEAR 7READY

You may be aware that in 2015 the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools endorsed a move towards shifting Year 7 from primary to secondary settings. Catholic Education South Australia (CESA) is now implementing that decision and most Catholic schools in South Australia will make this change in 2019. This means that, for most schools, Year 6 will become the final year of primary schooling. Year 7 will become the first year of secondary schooling.

What does this mean for Gleeson College?I am pleased to share with you that Gleeson College will be the first Catholic School in SA to adopt this change.• In 2018, we will begin offering Year

7 here at Gleeson College.• In 2018, Year 7 will also be offered at

our local Catholic primary schools.• From 2019, other Catholic

secondary schools will join us in commencing at Year 7.

Why move Year 7 to secondary? This decision is primarily about meeting the learning, social and emotional needs of young people across all Catholic Schools. It is also about strengthening pathways from primary to secondary schools across Catholic Education. Offering a consistent entry into secondary school at Year 7 makes it easier for students to explore and access all options.

Where can I find out more? You can find ‘Gleeson is Year 7 Ready’ resources including a video, fact sheets and frequently asked questions at www.gleeson.sa.edu.au and also at www.cesa.catholic.edu.au. I encourage you to take the time to look at these resources which outline Year 7 curriculum, pastoral support, identity and sibling discount amongst much more.

What does this mean for my child? If you have already enrolled a child/ren for Year 8 in 2019 or beyond, you now have the option for Priority Enrolment

to commence a year earlier at Year 7.

What if I would like to register my child for Priority Enrolment to commence secondary schooling at Gleeson College in Year 7?To register for Year 7 Priority Enrolment, please contact Gleeson College Registrar, Diana Quaglia, on 8282 6600 or via email at:[email protected]

We understand this move is a significant one and you are warmly welcome to discuss it with us at the College on 8282 6600 or via email at:[email protected]

Be assured that we will continue to keep you updated and informed. As always, the education and well-being of your child will remain our focus.

Yours sincerely,

NT IMMERSION TRIP A POWERFUL LIFE EXPERIENCE

Year 7 ReadyWhat exciting times we live in! We at Gleeson College are absolutely thrilled to be welcoming Year 7 students in 2018. Our preparations have begun in earnest and we will be working hard over the next 18 months or so to give our newest students the best possible educational experience as they start their secondary education as Year 7s.

By now you will have received a lot of information about this fantastic venture and there is more to come. We have had lots of enquiries since the official announcement of the move was made on Wednesday last week. For more information and on outline of the benefits and processes involved in Year 7 students moving to secondary education please visit our website: www.gleeson.sa.edu.au

Northern Territory Immersion TripOn Wednesday this week we held a College liturgy to farewell seven students and two staff who will be travelling to Darwin and then on to Bathurst Island today (see photos top right). They will be working with the local Catholic community on Bathurst Island and immersing themselves in the Tiwi culture for a week. Our community values the immersion trip as a life experience which has the power to deeply affect young people – both the students from Gleeson and the students of Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic Primary School. Our students

have been preparing most of the year for this journey and we certainly look forward to hearing about their experiences when they return. We wish the all the very best.

“Lord, guide and protect our staff and students as they enter this time of

pilgrimage.Watch over them. Protect them from accidents. Keep them free from harm

to body and soul.Lord, support them with Your grace

when they are tired.Help them to be patient in any trouble

which may come their way.Keep them always mindful of

Your presence and love.”Together we pray, with one heart.

Amen

Year 10 and 11 Course CounsellingOne way in which we involve parents in their child’s education at Gleeson College is through the Course Counselling days. These days are set aside for parents of our current Years 10 and 11 students to engage with staff in the process of subject selections for the last two years of school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who attended the course counselling days this week. We very much appreciate the effort involved in moving appointments and work commitments to make the time to attend such school functions. Thank you again.

Olympic InspirationThe Olympics are a great source of inspiration for all us and especially for young people who love sport. The great Olympic messages of courage, discipline

and hard work are appropriate for all facets of our lives. The Olympic Creed (or “Olympic Message”) has appeared on the scoreboard during the Opening Ceremony at every modern Olympic Games. Baron de Coubertin was inspired to adopt this creed after he heard a sermon by the Bishop of Pennsylvania, at a service for Olympic Athletes in 1908. It reminds us that in our life, just like in the Olympics, winning is not the most important thing. It is the ultimate challenge for which we all struggle as we strive to be “Swifter, Higher, Stronger.”

Very appropriate sentiments for our Year 12 students at the moment! In this, the ‘premiership term’ of Year 12, many students start to feel like giving up but now is the time to be persistent, the end is nigh, the final push needs to be strong.

Attributed to Jack Dempsey is the quote “A champion is someone who gets up when he (she) can’t.” I would urge our Year 12 students to keep getting up and working hard. Seek support, talk to friends, family and staff and push on. The road is tough but the destination great!

Mr J Corbo,Deputy Principal

Gleeson College warmly welcomed 10 visiting students from Kogakuin Junior High School in Japan for a

three-week Homestay this week.

We hope you enjoy your stay Komi, Yuna, Nene, Shoudai, Souta, Yuki, Hayato, Soto, Kahara

and Jin!

PERFORMING ARTS ROADSHOW > St Martin’s Catholic Primary @ Greenacres

A group of over 40 Gleeson Arts students from Years 8-12 toured to St Martin’s Catholic Primary School at Greenacres to host the first of our Performing Arts Roadshows on Wednesday 10 August.

Our Gleeson students mentored St Martin’s students in one of four different workshops (Drama, Hip Hop Dance, Rock Band and Choir) in the morning session. During these workshops our students interacted beautifully with their younger ‘pupils’ and were great representatives of Gleeson College. After the workshops and a quick recess break, we staged a one-hour concert, showcasing many dance, drama, band and vocal performances. The ‘VIP’ primary students involved in the workshops also took to the stage to perform in the songs, dances or drama that they had workshopped in the morning.

The students and teachers from St Martin’s were extremely grateful for the time our students spent with them and were impressed by the calibre of the performances. The Principal of St Martin’s, Susanne Harding, had already phoned Mr Baker by the time our bus had arrived back at Gleeson to thank us for our visit and to tell him what an amazing job all our students and staff did!

Thank you to Mrs Deptula, Mrs Parsons and Mr Validivia for their assistance running the workshops and for helping with the performances on the day.

Congratulations to all of the Performing Arts students who attended and assisted at the first roadshow for the term. You are wonderful ambassadors for Gleeson College and it is a pleasure to take you out on any excursions.

We now look forward to taking our Performing Arts Roadshow to St Francis of Assisi School at Newton on Wednesday 21 September, and then St Augustine’s Parish School at Salisbury on Thursday 22 September!

MY FLIPPED CLASSROOM > “I can work at my own pace.”

At Gleeson College, our teachers are lifelong learners, undertaking

Professional Development and working towards continuous improvement in all

that we do.

‘My Flipped Classroom’ is a modern pedagogical shift from traditional ‘lecture style’ teaching. In Flipped

Learning, theory happens as homework, often in the form of videos. Student's

stop, pause, rewind and play the videos taking down the important information,

completing tasks and developing clarifying questions in readiness for

the following lesson.

Flipped learning improves the standard of homework and maximises lesson time, allowing more time in class to

focus on the complex course work and allowing more teacher/student 1:1 time.

So far My Flipped Classroom has been an amazing success - here are some

comments from our students:

“My parents watch the teacher explanation and are able to help me.”

“I can work at my own pace.”

“If I am away sick I never missanything as I can catch up by

watching the video.”

“I don’t get stuck when doinghomework anymore – if I don’t

understand a concept I write it downas a questions for my next class.”

“I am able to go back and re-watchold videos to help me revise for

my exams.”

On Tuesday 16 August, two Gleeson students’ Jayde Tyczenko (10 DSHEW)

and Joanne Pham (10 FSIMB) were invited to represent the College

at the inaugural ‘Women in STEM Wikibomb’, held at Adelaide’s Microsoft

headquarters in the CBD.

Held during National Science Week, this venture was joint initiative of Microsoft

South Australia and the Office for Women to increase the number of Wikipedia pages about Australian women who

have contributed to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Jayde and Joanne personally contributed to raising the profile of women in

STEM by coding and creating their own Wikipedia pages. They mostly worked alongside professionals in the STEM industry and we at Gleeson College would like to praise both girls for

their enthusiasm and professionalism displayed on the day.

2016 MATHEMATICS QUIZ NIGHT > Gleeson Teams = Success!!

Gleeson College attended the annual Maths Quiz Night held at Pedare Christian College on Wednesday

10 August, with 19 of our students, ranging from Years 8 to Year 12,

taking part.

Our three Senior and two Middle School teams competed against a tough field from Modbury High

School and Pedare Christian College. The night was made up of two rounds,

both with 20 marks of Mathematics and 20 marks of General Knowledge,

with 40 minutes in each round to solve as many questions as they

could. This is a great night giving students the opportunity to really

show their problem solving skills in unfamiliar context.

It was really positive to see students collaborating amongst groups of different year levels and the night was capped off with three of our

groups achieving success. Our Middle School team of Marcus Petts (8

DMJEF), Jack Sharland (8 FMWIL) and Charles Conroy (8 DMMCC)

finished top in the Middle School General Knowledge category, winning a monetary prize! Our Senior group

of Kyle Sauerwald (11 FSMAR), Thomas Lamb (11 MSCUA), Timothy Camilleri (11 MSCUA) and Lachlan Agius (11 MSCOD) won the General Knowledge category in the Senior

division, and was also presented with a monetary prize. Our Senior team of Matthew Chalmers (12 FSMAR),

Adam Rossi (12 HSMAN), Jacob Borg (12 DSHEW) and Cameron Wood (12 MSCOD) worked hard

and finished second overall in the Senior Mathematics category and

should also be commended on this outstanding effort.

A huge thank you to Mrs Rachel McKay and Mr Nathan Ackan

for helping with supervision and assisting in marking papers on

the night. To all our students who participated, congratulations and thank you for making this year’s

event a big success.

Our Year 8/9 KO Netball girls travelled to Nazareth College to compete in the second round of Statewide Competition on Wednesday 10 August, with the day consisting of three games against Nazareth, Henley High School & Golden Grove HS.

Our first game was against Nazareth, who came out firing and applied some excellent defensive pressure on us from the start. After a reasonably even first quarter, Gleeson responded with some strong defensive turnovers from Adele Napoli (9 HMGIL) in the backline, and we were able to allow our shooters to score some important goals which put us in the lead for the next two quarters. The girls finished the game with a strong final term, Caitlyn Papalia (8 DMCUR) giving the team some great drives through the midcourt and we were just too quick for Nazareth to keep up with. This saw us win our first game with a final

score of 40-29.

After a short break it was on to Henley High School. The girls knew this game would be tough and came out absolutely firing, starting the game extremely strong in both attack and defence. The combination of Paris Sinclair (9 FMECO) in GA and Lucy

Burford (8 HMCAS) in GS seemed almost unstoppable, paired with the speed and agility of Emma Quinn (9 FMHAU) in Centre and Abby Taverner (8 MMMIT) in WA, we lead Henley by just a couple goals at half time. Stephanie Guidolin (9 HMGIL) in GK did an absolutely fantastic job against the Henley GS who stood at approximately 6ft tall, taking some great intercepts and rebounds at crucial parts of the game. Madison Nenke (9 FMHAU), who was back from injury, added some much needed

composure to the second half of the game in WA. Our girls put up a great fight for the next two quarters and after an almost goal-for-goal game, unfortunately a few turnovers caused us to lose our second game with a score of 29-34.

Our last game was against Golden Grove High and it was just as tough as the previous. Excellent movement and accurate shooting from Eliza Dodson (8 MMMIT) in GS made it hard for the Golden Grove defenders to cause any turnovers. Another

even first half, the girls knew that they had to step up their defensive game and that is what they did. Hayley Jameson (8 HMTOU) in WD caused some important turnovers, however we just could not convert them down the court. After a hard fought final quarter, Golden Grove stepped up in the last few minutes of the game, causing some quick turnovers which unfortunately

saw us lose our last game with a final score of 28-34.

It was a tough day, and although we did not get the desired the result, the girls played three fantastic games of netball and I am very proud of the fight that they put up and the great sportsmanship displayed on the day. We’ll get them next year!

YEAR 8&9 KO NETBALL > Gallant Effort By Our Girls in Second Round

OPEN GIRLS KO NETBALL > Tough Exit After Hard-Fought Round 2 Clashes

Our Gleeson Open Girls Knockout Netball Team travelled to St Michael’s

to take on St Michael’s, Cornerstone and Westminster on Tuesday 9 August.

Our line-up was strong, with Shelby McEvoy (12 DSHUT), Shelby Armstrong

(12 HSPLL), Niamh Douglas (12 FSEMA), Brittany Powell (11 HSMAN), Kelly Holl (11 HSUGL), Brianna Gibbs (10 HSUGL), Rachel Gill (10 FSMAR), Paris Sinclair

(9 FMECO), Emma Quinn (9 FMHAU) and Madison Nenke (9 FMHUA) selected to

represent the College.

The girls were required to take on the elements as they played against St

Michael’s in the first game with their outside court allocation forcing the

team into the rain. This took them a little while to adjust to and at half time we trailed the home team by five goals. In what was the first of a very physical round of games, the girls conceded a 20-26 loss at final whistle, but should

be commended on their continued hard work to game’s end.

In the match of the day, Gleeson played valiantly against strong competitors and

eventual round winners, Westminster College. The Girls fought hard, and

played in different positions to try and get the perfect balance on court. We

struggled to take all our opportunities, but after a very back and forth

game, Gleeson led at half time 9-8. Westminster Coach Leigh Waddington

(and former Adelaide Thunderbird) commended our Gleeson team for the hard fought game, and recognised the

great defensive pressure by our girls, as we went down by just two goals in the

final minutes (18-20).

After conceding the first two games, we tried to finish the day with a win,

but it wasn’t to be. As the girls trailed Cornerstone 8-10 at half time and

eventually lost 14-17 in what was also a very competitive clash. A fantastic job to all the girls for their perseverance and tenacity as the team was commended

for their great sportsmanship and fantastic on court performance.

Our Open Girls Team represented the College with pride and at the end of

the day we acknowledged all the Year 12 players for their involvement in the

game throughout their time at Gleeson.

All students were great ambassadors of the sport, as well as the College.

Thank you again to Mrs Peggy Busbridge for coaching the Open Girls KO Netball

Team again in 2016!

Our Year 8&9 Boys Knockout Soccer team faced Trinity College in their

Round 3 clash at Trinity on Tuesday this week, with a spot in the State Finals

up for grabs!

From the early stages it was clear that the Gleeson boys were up for the contest

as they focussed on the job at hand. The team was able to put Trinity under enormous pressure through their fast

ball movement and a high pressing game that couldn’t be dealt with. The

pressure was soon to tell when Lachlan Wallace (9 MMMAH) was able to put the

icing on a crossed ball from Thomas Ayre (9 FMECO) to open the scoring. Ayre followed up his good work not long after, adding a goal from a strike from the top of the box to push the score 2-0. Wallace

then added to his opening goal before half time to have the boys 3-0 up at the

break and in a dominant position.

The boys carried on in the second half where they left off in the first, and their

persistent pressure and willingness to attack with intent opened the flood gates to the back of the net. Second

half goals from Ayre (3) Ethan Crout (9 FMHAU) with 2, and Cooper Nunn (9

MMMAH), Bradley Willcocks (8 MMMOR) and Wallace with one each, resulted in a resounding 11-0 victory. The pick of the goals being a stylish 35-yard chip

from Crout to capitalise on a goal keeper error.

All boys played well and contributed positively to the result which helped

the team progress through to the State Finals, to be held at Burton Park on

Thursday 22 September.

CONGRATULATIONS MAYBELLINE SAN JUAN & NICOLE HANNA-RIVERO!

Congratulations to Maybelline San Juan (9 FMECO) who won a Gold medal for Australia at the Gangseo Love International Taekwondo Open Tournament (Australia v China)

recently. An amazing achievement, especially as it was a very late call-up!

Also, well done to both Maybelline and Nicole Hanna-Rivero (12 MSCUA) who were both selected as part of an Australian delegation to travel to Korea to train with some of the best Grandmasters and Masters in Taekwondo and Hapkido earlier this month. Training was very intense with sessions finishing at 10pm at night, with breaks only for lunch and

dinner! Both girls are looking forward to being involved again next year!

We wish both Maybelline and Nicole all the best as they continue to pursueexcellence in their chosen sport.

GLEESON FIRST XI INTO TWILIGHT SOCCER LEAGUE GRAND FINAL!

We took on Blackfriars in Round 13 of the Twilight Soccer League and the

boys were keen to book their place into the Twilight Grand Final, knowing a win would be enough to secure their place.

A much changed squad took to the field and the boys were keen to show their

wares. To the boys credit they approached the game with a really positive mind set

and their pressure and willingness to get in behind the Blackfriars back four paid early dividends. Jack Ward (12 MSRYA)

was able to open the scoring with a clinical close range finish. Soon after, Ward was again able to get himself in

an almost identical position to snare his second goal of the match, pushing the

score to 2-0.

Excellent work from First XI debutant Isaac Atuer (10 HSPLL) lead to his first goal for the team soon after, with his

ability to cut in from wide positions and get in behind the defence proving to be

a handful for Blackfriars backs. Another of our talented Year 10 footballers, Isaac Mullen (10 FSMAR), was able to latch on to a through ball before slotting past the keeper in a 1v1 situation to make it 4-0. It was then only fitting that Ward was able to cap off an amazing first half with his third goal to complete his hat-trick and have the side leading 5-0 at half time.

Goals were harder to come by in the second half with the game all but

secured; however, the boys were able to add one more to the tally from the penalty spot. Ever reliable goalkeeper Josef Shyti

(12 DSVAU) stepped up to the spot and made no mistake to make the score 6-0. We were able to play out the rest of the

game without too many troubles; 6-0 the final score.

This victory sees us qualify for the Twilight Soccer League Grand Final!

The Grand Final will be held at Adelaide Shores Football Centre on Wednesday 31 August where we will take on Prince Alfred College (PAC). The team will face

Sacred Heart College in the final round of the Twilight Soccer League next week and

the boys will be looking to finish off the minor league games in style.
