TRANSCRIPT

The Grace Memorial Baptist Church 1100 North Eden Street - Baltimore, Maryland 21213

Reverend Irvin Pope, Pastor

Theme:“Family and Friends Holding onto

God’s Unchanging Hands.” —Psalm 119:173

“Jesus’ Mission on Earth”

Lesson: Luke 4:14-21

GOLDEN TEXT:

“He began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled

in your ears” (Luke 4:21).

TODAY’S AIM:

To show that Jesus clearly revealed His identity and mission

as the anointed Messiah who had come to fulfill Isaiah’s

prophecy.

INTRODUCING THE LESSON:

Critics will say that Jesus was nothing more than a simple

yet wise itinerant preacher. However, the Bible is consistently

clear in presenting Jesus as the Son of God and the promised

Messiah.

In this Week's lesson we will see that Jesus clearly stated

that He was the Messiah foretold by the Old Testament

prophets. You will see in this lesson that Jesus' ministry was

clearly in fulfillment of what the prophets foretold the

messiah would do.

QUESTIONS:

1. An encouraging and supporting church is a blessing to all

(Luke 4:14-16). 2. Because God often directs us through His Word, we should

always be open to what He is telling us as we read the Bible

(Luke 4:17). 3. Christ’s message of salvation provides comfort and

encouragement no matter what we are facing in life (Luke

4:18). 4. The good news of Christ endures because it is timeless

(Luke 4:19).

5. Others can see how we live and speak for Christ even though

we may be unaware that they are observing us (Luke 4:20). 6. Personal arrogance has no part in our witness for Christ

(Luke 4:21).

CONCLUDING THE LESSON:

Imagine how you would react to Jesus’ claim if you were

people from His hometown.

“Let Thine hand help me.” —Psalm 119:173

I

Time is filled with swift transition,

Naught of earth unmoved can stand,

Build your hopes on things eternal,

Hold to God’s unchanging hand!

Chorus: Hold to God’s unchanging hand!

Hold to God’s unchanging hand!

Build your hopes on things eternal,

Hold to God’s unchanging hand.

II

Trust in Him who will not leave you,

What-so-ever years may bring,

If by earthly friends forsaken,

Still more closely to Him cling!

Chorus: Hold to God’s unchanging hand!

Hold to God’s unchanging hand!

Build your hopes on things eternal,

Hold to God’s unchanging hand.

III

When your journey is completed,

If to God you have been true,

Fair and bright the home in glory,

Your enraptured soul will view!

Chorus: Hold to God’s unchanging hand!

Hold to God’s unchanging hand!

Build your hopes on things eternal,

Hold to God’s unchanging hand.

a tool that individuals use to magnify and look beyond an object.

Just as God’s Word is a tool that helps all believers to look beyond

their present circumstance or situation. God’s Word is not intellect

on ice or ignorance on fire.

In addition to his writing and teaching gifts, Reverend Barnes is an

accomplished musician, who plays both piano and organ; which

complements his abilities as a composer and lyricist.

“And We Know That All Things Work Together for Good,” is one of

Reverend Barnes’ favorite scriptures, which happens to be an

expression of his life. Reverend Barnes found himself arrested by

this title “Farther In and Deeper Down.” That title resonated in his

mind and exploded in his heart. This is what God had called him to

do, here and now, with whatever state that he is in and the days

ahead.

The kindest Friend I’ve ever had

Is one I cannot see.

Yet One in whom I can confide,

Who loves and blesses me. —Shuler

What Family Means To Me

. What family means to me is more Than mere words can convey It's been the basis for my life And how I've faced each day.

The nurturing of Mom and Dad From birth to puberty Instilled in me a sense of worth And love for family.

The holiday festivities The picnics in the park The camp outs by the river And my Mother's prayers at dark Are just a few examples From my childhood memories That show the warmth of family And what they've meant to me.

The close knit love of siblings With my parents T.L.C Has made me know and feel the warmth That bonds a family.

A True Friend

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is

born for adversity.” — Proverbs 17:17

I have a friend named Nelson. We work together, play

together, cry together, and often laugh together. Our

friendship keeps growing.

Recently Nelson said he wanted me to conduct his funeral if he

died before I did. I said, “Hold off on that request for a few years.

I might disappoint you, and you might change your mind.”

“Oh no,” he quipped, “that won’t happen. You can’t disappoint me

any more than you already have.”

We had a good laugh, but I began pondering his comment. Isn’t

that what it means to be a true friend— knowing the disappointing

side of a person’s life yet continuing to accept him? Solomon

described such a friend as one who “sticks closer than a brother,”

one who “loves at all times” (Proverbs 18:24; 17:17). We all need

someone like that in our lives.

Jesus wants to be that kind of friend to us. When we admit our

sinful disobedience, ask for His forgiveness, and submit to Him,

He becomes our Savior and Friend. Because He took the penalty

of our sins upon Himself on the cross, nothing we’ve done, or may

do, will turn Him away.

Jesus is one friend you can’t afford to be without. Is He your

Friend? —DJD

We have a Friend who sticks by us,

Who’s closer than a brother;

And even though He knows our faults,

His love is like no other. — Sper
