What is a migration? !
!
This involves moving data, users, web parts and farm solutions from version to version
It can involve moving your entire environment to a different data center or just
upgrading from a previous version
![Page 8: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
What questions need to be answered before migrating?
!
Are you using SharePoint 2007? Are you running SP2?
!
STSADM Pre-upgrade check:
Site definition info, Language pack info, Feature info,
Custom list views, OS requirements
#fpwebinar
![Page 9: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
What comes over in a migration and what doesn’t? !
Depends on the environment We primarily focus on content We can also grab user profile info and MySites content Most Service Apps, like Search, will be recreated on the new environment
#fpwebinar
![Page 10: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Time to clean up !
Migrations are a perfect time to clean house and get rid of old data
#fpwebinar
![Page 11: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
What surprises to expect after a migration
!
Look and feel
2007 to 2010 had more differences than 2010 to 2013
You can upgrade while keeping the look the same
#fpwebinar
![Page 12: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
#fpwebinar
Migration methods !
![Page 13: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
In-Place Migration !
Only an option going from 2007 to 2010
Involves installing over the top of 2007 (beware of 32-bit vs. 64-bit)
In-place no longer an option for 2013
#fpwebinar
![Page 14: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Database Detach/Attach Migration !
Most common migration approach
Must have new server set up and in place
Detach DB from 2007 environment, move to new server, attach
You cannot simply just attach the DB using Central Admin
You must use PowerShell to run the Mount-SPContentDatabase command
#fpwebinar
![Page 15: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Third Party Migration !
We will use this to migrate from other cloud-based providers
Used on smaller environments
Some people to look at for third-party tools:
Metavis, Metalogix, ShareGate, AvePoint
#fpwebinar
![Page 16: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Possible Issues - Fab 40 !
Fab 40 Site Templates created by Microsoft cause many issues
Templates are not supported in later versions
They created upgraded versions for 2010 but haven’t had much success
Not many issues with them if doing in-place upgrade
Third-party migration tools will not even attempt to migrate
#fpwebinar
![Page 17: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Possible Issues - Legacy Web Parts !
Not all web parts are compatible with later versions of SharePoint
Contact the vendor of the web part and determine if it is compatible
#fpwebinar
![Page 18: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Possible Issues - Customizations !
Customizations are the number one issue during migrations
Each migration with custom code, templates, lists, etc. need to be addressed as one-offs
#fpwebinar
![Page 19: The Great Migration: Moving Your SharePoint | Fpwebinar](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052505/55617870d8b42a98268b4d29/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
So, Why Even Migrate? !
Eventually your version will no longer be supported by Microsoft
Once that happens, your questions won’t be answered
If you run into issues, you’re out of luck
Get the latest and greatest technology with the most up-to-date features
