Ms. Schooley teaches fourth grade at Hartley where she has been a valued member of our faculty since 2006. She is a kind and caring teacher who always gives her heart and hugs to both current and past students. She has a special talent and passion for working with even the most challenging students, and she really knows how to make learning fun. Mrs. Kim Sikes was chosen by her peers to serve as Hartley’s representative this year as our Rookie Teacher of the Year. This is Kim’s first year as a lead kindergarten teacher, but she has had lots of experience working as an intern and an associate teacher with both Mrs. Apel and Mrs. Pryor last year and as a preschool teacher before that. We have been impressed with the quality of Mrs. Sikes’ teaching since her first year here and were thrilled to be able to offer her a lead position this year. Congratulations to you both. We can’t wait to celebrate YOU at the District Teacher of the Year Banquet. The Principal’s Math Club recognizes students at each grade level who have mastered their addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division facts for their grade level on our “Fastt Math” computer program. Students who achieve Principal’s Math Club Status get their names posted on the Principal’s Club bulletin board, their names are announced on the morning announcements, they receive a special certificate from me AND have their names entered into a Friday free ice cream drawing. I encourage you to make it a priority in your home to help your child learn his/her math facts ….not just for the cool stuff they can earn at school, but because being fluent with math facts is a life skill that can help your child throughout his/her lifetime. Finally, be sure to look in your child’s backpack on Wednesday for information about our upcoming Fun Fund Raiser! Hurricane Make-Up Day Monday, October 17, 2016 October 17 th was originally a planning day for the teachers, but St. Johns County Schools will be using this day as our hurricane make-up day for students. Notes from Principal Taylor

    Dear Hawk Families,

Please join with me in congratulating our 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Kate Schooley. Ms. Schooley teaches

fourth grade at Hartley where she has been a valued member of our faculty since 2006. She is a kind and caring

teacher who always gives her heart and hugs to both current and past students. She has a special talent and passion

for working with even the most challenging students, and she really knows how to make learning fun.

Mrs. Kim Sikes was chosen by her peers to serve as Hartley’s representative this year as our Rookie Teacher of the

Year. This is Kim’s first year as a lead kindergarten teacher, but she has had lots of experience working as an intern

and an associate teacher with both Mrs. Apel and Mrs. Pryor last year and as a preschool teacher before that. We

have been impressed with the quality of Mrs. Sikes’ teaching since her first year here and were thrilled to be able to

offer her a lead position this year. Congratulations to you both. We can’t wait to celebrate YOU at the District

    Teacher of the Year Banquet.

The Principal’s Math Club recognizes students at each grade level who have mastered their addition, subtraction,

multiplication and/or division facts for their grade level on our “Fastt Math” computer program. Students who

achieve Principal’s Math Club Status get their names posted on the Principal’s Club bulletin board, their names are

announced on the morning announcements, they receive a special certificate from me AND have their names

entered into a Friday free ice cream drawing. I encourage you to make it a priority in your home to help your child

learn his/her math facts ….not just for the cool stuff they can earn at school, but because being fluent with math

facts is a life skill that can help your child throughout his/her lifetime.

Finally, be sure to look in your child’s backpack on Wednesday for information about our upcoming Fun Fund

    Raiser!

    Hurricane Make-Up Day Monday, October 17, 2016

October 17th was originally a planning day for the teachers, but St. Johns County Schools will be using this day as our hurricane make-up day for students. Please make this change on your calendars. This will be a regular school day from 8:30 AM -2:50 PM. Since we are using teacher planning day for the make-up day, the report card date may be adjusted.

  • Hartley Visitors: If you would like to visit your child at school during lunch, attend a field trip, and/or volunteer at school, please

fill out the volunteer application on the following website:

    https://knt3.keepntrack.com/HTML/KnTOnlineVolunteerApplication.html?db=stjohns&version=3.16.1-

    20160701

You must be an approved volunteer to come into school and do any of the above fun things at Hartley. Once your

application has been cleared through the school district and the St. Johns County Sherriff’s office, it will be valid

for three years. You will not need to fill out another application in the future, just let us know you need to be

renewed. Your volunteer status, once cleared, will allow you to sign in at all St. Johns County Schools.

Please do not check your child out early from school, or call after 2:00 PM (1:00 PM Wednesday) to change the way your child goes home (EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY). Thank you very much for your cooperation. Mrs. Helen

    STRONG STUDY HABITS

Q: My third grader has to spend more time studying this year. How can I make sure he studies effectively? A: Set your child up for success by helping him find a distraction-free study spot. Also, have him come up with a study routine. For instance, he could reserve time each evening to review his textbook and notes in the days leading up to a test or quiz. Also, many students find it helpful to jot down a purpose each time they study. Your child might write: “I will learn the definitions of all the boldfaced words in chapter 7, section 1.” Finally, encourage him to experiment with study strategies to find what works best. He could close his eyes and imagine how a word is spelled or draw a grid with 9 squares to solve 3 X 3. Or he might find it easier to spell or recite math facts aloud in rhythm or to a familiar tune. Just for fun: Q: What has three feet but no legs or arms?

    A: A yard.

    HALLOWEEN DENTAL TIPS:

Increase oral hygiene during Halloween. An electric toothbrush is always better than a regular one. Floss all the teeth that are touching no matter the age. *Children are not great at brushing on their own until around 8. Flossing should also be assisted by a parent until around 10. *Toothbrushes should be sized for the child by their age along with age appropriate fluoride toothpaste. *Sealants are a protective coating on permanent molars that are a great preventive procedure to decrease the chances of cavities on the chewing surface.
