The colony was expanded in 1890 because of the traty ofHelgoland-Zanzibar between England and Germany, whichestablished the acquisition of a land of northeast area which

which promised new commercial trades. German colonistssettled more in this area because th

ey were attracted fromeconomic resources like diamonds and copper, but also fromthe cultivation of the land.

The German colonial power on Namibia was consolidatedby the force and with protection treaties imposed on thelocal population. Trough these means, the European settlersquickly took profession of the livestock and arable land. Theebony population hadntno legal protection from theauthorities. This situation helped to create a tension thaterupted, during the XIX and XX century, in a series of

clashes between indigenous people and the colonial army. Afirts revolt started between 1893 and 1894 with Nama(apastoral tribe), followed by Herero in 1904.

to concentration camp where they were forced to workas slaves for the military and for the German settlers. Many Herrero, however, died for disease, malnutrionand overwork. A census carried out in 1905 revealedthat in German South-West aFrica had been 25.000

Herero. They were about 100.000 before the 1904.
