Reflecting on the Word

Once again we have Joseph receiving angelic in-structions in a dream: first to flee Bethlehem for Egypt to escape King Herod’s murderous plans, and later to return from Egypt once King Herod has died. In addition to paralleling events in the life of Moses, this story con-fronts us with the precarious and dangerous situation into which Jesus was born. From the moment of Christ’s en-try into our world, there are those who seek to take his life. The shadow of the cross falls across the Christmas crib. Matthew’s story of the trials of the Holy Family reminds us that holiness does not ensure that one’s life will never contain uncertainty. Indeed, if we take the Holy Family as our model, then it seems that holiness - whole-hearted dedication to God’s will for the world - is likely to make one’s life more uncertain, not less. Yet doing the will of God is of such surpassing worth that we should be willing to embrace such uncertainty for its sake. - adapted from “Living the Word”

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

Christmas lingers: I hope your Christmas has been a blessed and heartwarming one, bringing you closer to the one who is closer to us than we are to ourselves. The beauty and glory of Christmas continues, not just for a day or a few days, but through each day and throughout our lives. The heart of Christmas is the mystery of the Incarnation, that of God becoming one with us, entering our history, our flesh and blood, our human family, and all that we are engaged in life, love, and growth, our pains and joys, our triumphs and travails, our ambigui-ties and anomalies. Jesus lives inside of our lives. He is Emmanuel, God who is with us, every nanosecond of our lives. So, long live the mystery and majesty of Christmas!

New Year 2014: Let the spirit and spirituality of Christ-mas inform and inspire us as we come to the end of 2013 and are about to usher in a whole new year. Abra-ham Lincoln says, “The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.” Let our future, an ab-stract and uncertain reality, come one day at a time in 2014, as we address each day with the grace and dignity that we can muster, with God’s presence, help, and guidance. Henry David Thoreau says, “Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in.” So, let’s go fishing! Remem-ber the gospel story of Jesus asking the apostles to put out into the deep waters in the Sea of Galilee? They had toiled all night long with no results, but Jesus tells them not to be discouraged but to be adventurous ---and go deeper. They caught so much fish they could-n’t haul it in without a lot of help from others. Let our fishing in the New Year be characterized by faith, ad-venture, risk-taking, and guided by Christ. Let’s keep in mind the popular saying: “Yesterday is history; tomor-row is a mystery. Today is a gift---That’s why we call it the present.”

A Quick Round-up of 2013 at St. Veronica: Thanks to all that has been; Yes to all that shall be.

Our liturgical, faith-related celebrations day after day, week after week, have been going very well throughout the year. Our numbers at these celebrations are growing. We have happy, upbeat people and cele-brants coming together with joy and a great sense of community. The hospitality after two of the Sunday Masses is one of the best and most enjoyable. The Da San Martinos and their team do a great job!

Ministries to the Spanish Speaking have taken off to a very great start, with Mass each Sunday evening and other new services like baptisms, weddings, anniver-saries and Quinceañeras offered in Spanish. Father Ra-fael’s presence in our parish helps strengthen these Spanish ministries. The Spanish ministries raised nearly

$5,000 toward the Capital Campaign, a sign among oth-ers that they are active and engaged in our community.

Our School and Faith Formation ministries are flour-ishing. We are doing a pretty good job of educating and sharing faith with the nearly 300 students in the school and 350 in the Faith Formation program. Many other social, sports, fundraising, and cultural activities of the school and Faith Formation are well organized with much success and happiness for the building up of the community. The sacramental preparations (First Rec-onciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation) are done in such commendable ways that we can truly be (humbly) proud!

The Pastoral Center has become what we intended it for: the hub of parish activities and meetings. The offic-es for the staff are convenient and effective for the work we need to do. The new media room is a resounding success. To our joy, the Archbishop blessed this build-ing last Sunday on December 22.

Capital Campaign – You have all received the profes-sionally presented annual report by the three coordina-tors of our Capital Campaign. Thanks to your generosi-ty, we raised nearly $275,000 and have completed Phase One of the pavement work. The results are all loud and clear, smooth and comfortable, for every to see and en-joy. The front area and around the Church looks very clean and safe now. Through successful events like the Spanish ministry Dinner-Dance, Bocce Ball Tournament and BBQ, Bingo events and the sheer generosity of about 500 people we have achieved these results. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone participated, may-be with a minimum of about $250? Then we could go about this work quickly and complete it for the benefit of the whole community. In the New Year, the follow-ing events are planned: on March 1 (Mardi Gras Dinner-Dance presented by the Filipino Community of St. Ve-ronica) and May 17 (Gala presented by the School Guild and Men’s Club). There’s also a Bingo event planned. More details will be given as and when we come to these and other events.

Archbishop’s Annual Appeal: For the past five years, we have been making it quickly and even exceeding our goal, thanks again to your generosity. Another success-ful AAA campaign is to begin in February of 2014. We support our Archbishop and his ministries throughout the Archdiocese. In helping the Archdiocese, we are actually helping ourselves because we are part of the Archdiocese!

Wishing you all the blessings for a Happy New Year!

Your Friend & Pastor,

Father Charles Puthota

A Prayer Service for the New Year

The leader begins:

The new year, like a new born child, is placed in our hands as the old year passes away. The days and weeks to come are God's gift; they carry God's blessing. As a blessing we welcome them. Our hope for the year ending is that all that was good in it remain with us an all that was harmful be left behind.

Let us listen to a Reading from the Book of Genesis:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was a vast waste, darkness covered the deep, and the spirit of God hovered over the surface of the water. God said: "Let there be light," and there was light; and God saw the light was good, and he separated the light from darkness. He called the light day, and the darkness night. So evening came, and morning came; it was the first day. Genesis 1;1-5

Then all pray:

Bless us, O Lord, and bless the time and seasons yet to come. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. And fill this new year with your kindness, that we may be glad and rejoice all the days of our life.

Others may offer prayers of intercession and thanksgiv-ing, and then all may pray the "Our Father."

By Father Victor Hoagland, C.P.
