Reflecting on the Word If you were to choose an adjective to accompany “family” what would it be? Holy ? Or is it more likely to be “dysfunctional”? If culture reflects reality, our greatest American playwrights hold up families falling apart as the norm: Eugene O’Neil’s Tyrone family, Tennessee Williams’ haunted Southern siblings, Arthur Miller’s Willie and Linda Loman and their sons. Behold, the American family! And yet, granting that every family is imperfect and on occasion wounds each other, we do find holiness in families. It is the holiness we see in Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, who cared for and respected each other - a holiness that witnesses to the power of God’s grace at work in hearts open to it. In today’s Gospel we see this gracious care in the worry of parents who could not find their son. We hear it in Mary’s anxious words to Jesus, in Jesus’ fidelity to his dual parentage-earthly and heavenly-and in the simple statement that “he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedi-ent to them.” As members of the human family, imperfect and even sinful, we too are graced with a capacity for “advancing in wisdom and age and favor before God and one another.” Each of us is called to holiness, to a fullness of being made possible by being open to the loving touch of God’s grace made visible in the Incarnation. - from “Living the Word”

inherit the Kingdom of God, which has been prepared for us from the foundation of the world.

That is why Jesus’ public mission began with this invi-tation: “The time is fulfilled, the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent, believe in the Gospel.” Jesus makes it clear that there is no other time; now is the time for us to turn around and believe in the good news that God in Jesus is with us, that he has created us with a specific purpose in mind, which we have to fulfill. This aim of our life is to have a new life by believing in Jesus, a new life in which we will spend our lives in love and service of others. “Love one another as I have loved you.” “Whenever you have done this to the least of my brothers and sisters you have done it to me.” We cannot wait for some future time to carry out this time-bound “love commandments” of Jesus. Now is “kairos,” the right and opportune moment, the crucial time, the ap-pointed time, the time of the Lord.

Since there is no other world where we can hope to do good before we reach our final destination with God, let us begin now by doing whatever good that we can do and whatever kindness we can show to anyone, without deferring or neglecting it. Our Christian faith impels us to take responsibility for our lives now and to make this place a better place to live in. The French writer Albert Camus says: “I shall tell you a great se-cret my friend. Do not wait for the last judgment. It happens every day.” Our last judgment will depend entirely on who we can be and what we can do in this life on a daily basis. As it is clear that we shall not pass this way again, let us grab every opportunity to do good and cease to do evil. We can let go of the precious mo-ments that come our way when we can truly be what God wants us to be---only at our peril. Shakespeare in Julius Caesar says: “There is a tide in the of affairs of men, which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries.” We live only once. Where else, when else can we hope to be---and become---good?

Action: Treat everyday of the new year as if it were the last day of your life, and put as much love and grace into it as you can. Treat everyone as more important than you are. Now is the time for you to change, to be-come better, to do good, to show kindness. Learn eve-ryday to consider your life not as your own but as one given to you by God so you can help and heal. No more “If only”! No more procrastination! No more excuses! No more rationalizations! Only love. It’s NOW!

I Shall Not Pass This Way Again

Reflection: As we stand ready to ring out the old year and ring in the new, it is good to think about time, a gift that we have no choice but spend. The concept of time in different cultures encapsulates their worldview. Hindus believe that time is cyclic or, at the most, spiral. Based on the recurring pattern in nature, such as the day and night, seasons, and ag-ricultural cycles, they hold that human life, too, re-peats itself. That is why humans, Hindus believe, undergo punarjanma (rebirth or reincarnation).

Buddhism, too, believes in rebirth before nirvana (absolute cessation of desire; extinction of the ego leading to enlightenment) can be achieved. The Greeks in the ancient times believed that every three thousand years or so some colossal, cataclysmic dis-aster would wipe out the world and then a whole new era would begin all over again. The ancient Israelites seemed to have affirmed that there was nothing new under the sun: “The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it arose….. See, this is new? It has already been in ancient times be-fore us” (Ecclesiastes 1:5, 10).

Christianity, however, takes a completely different approach; it takes a linear view of history. We move forward from one point to another, reaching the ulti-mate point, which is Christ himself, the Omega Point, as Teilhard de Chardin would call it. The world moves in a straight line, picking a definite direction and a specific goal, which all human beings are hop-ing to reach. We are not going back in time nor are we coming back in time. We cannot cling to the past either in regret or in nostalgia. We do not look for-ward to another life or era in this world to do better than what we are doing now or to make up for the lost opportunities. We have no other time than the one given to us now in this world to work out our “salvation,” which is to fulfill the destiny entrusted to us by God. We have no other chance than the one now to realize the purpose of our life gifted to us by God Himself. God has given us the grace to do the dance of beauty that would truly reveal who we are and who we are meant to be. God has placed a song in our mouth that would proclaim the grandeur of who we are as human beings. We have to do that dance and sing that song in this world so that we can

Planning Your Wedding at St. Veronica?

The policy of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco states that arrangements for marriage are to be made at least six months in advance. These months are meant to give couples the opportunity for prayerful re-flection on Christian marriage and for consideration of their future life as "two who will be made one." Your first step is to call our office at 650-588-1455 to schedule an appointment with a member of the clergy. During the initial meeting preliminary information will be taken and an evaluation of your readiness to marry will be assessed. Other information will be provided regarding the Marriage Preparation Program and FO-CUS questionnaire. You will also have the opportunity to set up future meet-ings with clergy, our wedding coordinator and music director who will all work with you in preparing your special day. Calendars fill up quickly and schedules get busy, so don't delay in setting up your initial wedding appointment.

Feast day: January 1 Mary is entitled to the title of Queen because, as Pope Pius XII ex-pressed in a 1946 radio speech, “Jesus is King throughout all eternity by nature and by right of conquest: through him, with him, and sub-ordinate to him, Mary is Queen by grace, by di-vine relationship, by right of conquest, and by singular election.”

This Queen is also our Mother. While she is not our Mother in the physical sense, she is called our spiritual mother, for she conceives, gives birth, and nurtures the spiritual lives of grace for each person.
