ADSF Offering Online Course: Immigration and
Catholic Social Teaching From September 22 to October 27, the Arch-diocesan School of Pastoral Leadership invit-ed all to join Dr. Jeffrey D. Marlett, professor of religious studies, for a six-week evening course on Catholic Social Teaching (“the Church’s best-kept secret”) and its particular application to the question of immigration.
What are the spiritual and intellectual re-sources that the Church offers to help Catho-lics approach civic, political, legal, econom-ic, and other public policy matters - such as immigration - with a consistent ethic of life?
Online meetings are six consecutive Tuesday evenings. Students can earn a Certificate of Completion.
For complete information and to register, vis-it www.sfarch.org/immigration-class.
From our Pastor, Father Driscoll Today’s gospel passage (MT 18:21-25) and the lesson
it offers takes us to a very sensitive area of our faith in Jesus Christ.
If we want to be forgiven by God for our sins then we must forgive others who have sinned against us. Our Lord and Savior is so very clear about this --- If we do not for-give we shall not be forgiven. We know that we pray this every time that we pray the Our Father, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us”. Perhaps this is the most challenging part of being an authentic follower of Jesus Christ. Some people have been terribly hurt by another or we have witnessed others hurt by someone --- so how does forgiveness come to be? Someone may even say: “I just can’t get myself to for-give”.
Monsignor Charles Pope writes that “…if we read the parable closely, we must come to understand that mer-cy and forgiveness are not something we do out of our own flesh. Rather, mercy and forgiveness are capacities we must find within us as the result of a stunning realization of the mercy we ourselves have been shown.” Brothers and Sisters, God became a man, the Creator became one of His creatures by taking on our humanity. He did this for one reason and one reason alone --- to bring us forgiveness. And not only for the sin of Adam and Eve but for our personal sins as well.
Because Jesus Christ suffered, died and rose from the dead for us personally, because He established the sacra-ments of baptism and confession, we can be completely forgiven of our sins. We can be purified of the times when we failed to love God, to love others, to be holy and pure. Because Jesus gave Himself for us, we can receive a life that never ends where there is only happiness and joy with God. We can be at peace. We can even begin to real-ize some of that peace in this life.
When we come to this realization --- and this is only possible by God’s grace --- then, as Monsignor Pope writes further “… our hearts are moved and suddenly we don’t hate anyone, and forgiveness is then something which flows from our broken, humbled hearts. This is a gift which the Lord offers us.”
His Holiness Benedict XVI helps our understanding of what reception of this gift from the Lord involves --- what it means to forgive. He wrote: “Forgiveness is therefore, not just a matter of ignoring, of merely trying to forget. Forgiveness exacts a price firstly from the person who forgives. He must overcome the evil done to him; he must burn it interiorly, and in so doing renew himself.”
How can we be people who always forgive? It starts with the small things. We should always be ready to for-give, to give a pass to others, to make excuses for them. Not to allow ourselves to be hurt again but to respond in love.
By our union with Christ in prayer, by our restoration to his love by receiving His forgiveness in holy Confes-sion, in the worthy reception of the Holy Eucharist, we too
can overcome the evils big and small done to us. Holy Mary, pray for us that we can be a “vera icon”, a “true im-age” of your Son by forgiving and loving in union with Him.
Two Significant Sacrificial Gifts Received
Last week Saint Veronica parish received a $10,000 gift in memory of Anthony Hoang Minh Dinh who passed away earlier this year. The gift is from our devoted parish-ioner Nancy Do in honor of her brother Anthony. Please pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of Anthony Hoang Minh Dinh. We thank Nancy for this very generous gift that comes at a financially challenging time for Saint Ve-ronica in this pandemic. Please pray for Nancy and her husband Peter and their family. God bless you!!!
Also last week the parish received an unsolicited sac-rificial gift of $5,000 from James and Yvette Gardner to assist with the significant financial shortfall. The Gardners have been long-time devoted and active parishioners who have helped our parish and school many times. God bless them for this generosity!!!
Gift of New Lectern for Outdoor Masses A great “thank you” to Mr. and Mrs. Renato Zamperin for their gift of a new lectern with built-in micro-phone and speaker system. It is great! And it has a wire-less lapel microphone for the priest to use. No more noisy and awkward handing back and forth of the microphone as we had been doing with the school's public address system. (Thank you for the loan!)
Statue of Mary "above the door" beautified
After a parishioner noticed that the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary that is perched above our front en-trance was in need of attention, a new coat of white paint was applied by parishioner Ken De Nardi. Ken then won-dered if it was too white, making the features more indis-tinguishable. So just before September 8, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, artist and restorationist David Dittmann spent the entire day in the tremendous heat add-ing wonderful pastel coloring to the statue. Now the fea-tures of this image of Holy Mary are really visible and quite lovely. It is great! Thank you to David and his wife Regina who cleaned the statues of Joseph and Mary in the main church. They hope to return next month to repair and improve those statues. All of this at no cost to the parish! Thank you again to Renato and Elsa Zamperin for sponsor-ing this work. Anyone interested in sponsoring the finish-ing of restoration of the Joseph and Mary interior statues?
God bless all of you for your encouragement and fi-
nancial support of the mission of Saint Veronica parish to bring the true image of Christ to our families and commu-nity. It is really wonderful to be your pastor!

As Father Driscoll mentioned in his Pastor’s column, restoration experts David and Regina Dittmann were recently at Saint Veronica performing cleaning and painting on some of our parish’s statues. More work will need to take place on the indoor statues of Mary and Joseph. Anyone who would like to make a donation toward this additional work is welcome to contact the parish office or Father Driscoll.

Online Giving Options at Saint Veronica
Saint Veronica parishioners have two options for on-line giving to our parish. Especially in these times when there are concerns about exposure to disease or spreading of a virus, online giving is a convenient option to support our parish and its mission. Even though we are still able to gather, albeit outdoors, for public Mass, your vital support can still happen regardless of where and how Mass is being celebrated.
We have online giving set up through Our Sunday Visitor, which provides our donation envelopes. The direct link is:
https://www.osvhub.com/stveronicassf/funds
This link is also posted on the home page of our parish website, www.stveronicassf.com, under “Online Giving”.
Additionally, the Archdiocese of San Francisco has set up a way to make a one-time or monthly donation to any parish within the Archdiocese. Simply select the amount you wish to donate, designate the funds for Saint Veronica Parish, and complete and billing and payment details.
The direct link for online giving through the Archdiocese is: www.sfarch.org/lifeline
Regardless of how our parishioners are giving, thank you to everyone who is supporting Saint Veronica in whatever ways they are able!
