From the Pastor’s Desk - A Spiritual Reflection ARE YOU MARY OR MARTHA?

Dear Parishioners, Have you heard the story of an old monk who had been praying for years for a vision from God? Finally it was granted. God appeared to him in his monastery cell. The monk was overcome with emotion---and devotion. As he was on his knees, worshipping God, the monastery bell rang. It was time to feed the poor at the gate, and it was the old monk’s turn to distribute food. Torn between the desire to stay with God and the need to feed the poor, between the heavenly vision and the earthly duty, the monk agonized over what he should do. Finally, he tore himself away from the vision and went off to feed the hungry. Hours later when he returned to his cell with a heavy heart, he found the heavenly vision still waiting for him. God said to him: “My son, if you had not gone off to feed the poor, I would not have waited for you.” Often we feel a spiritual tension between our love for God and service of others. It is a healthy tension which can lead us to a balance of life. Love of God and love of neighbor is not a matter of “either/or” but it is one of “both/and”. We can and must engage in both love of God and love of neighbor. It’s not a question of choosing one or the other. This is symbolized charmingly in the story of Mary and Martha as they relate to Jesus and to each other. Temperamentally, I find myself more on the side of Martha, not least because my mother’s name is Martha. It is true that we have to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to him. It is also true that we need to feed Jesus and take care of his needs. Jesus’ statement that “Mary has cho-sen the better part and it will not be taken from her” does not mean that he does not want his basic needs taken care of by Martha. It is said that Jesus in this story was on his way to Jeru-salem. He knew he was going to suffer and die there. Obviously, he was going through deep emotions and perhaps anxieties about what was going to happen to him. Remember, “Jesus was like us in everything except sin.” Jesus needed someone to listen to him deeply, and that need was provided tenderly by Mary. Mary too needed to be connected with Jesus for her peace and har-mony. This is what we do when we go to Church and partici-pate in various sacraments, rituals, and devotions. We listen to Jesus who speaks to us and touches us. We dis-cover ourselves and feel the spiritual connection. We become Marys in this process.

However, Jesus also sends us out to the world to feed the hungry as that old monk was asked to do. We have to be Marthas as well if we truly have to be Jesus’ disci-ples. We have to help and heal others, be kind, compas-sionate, forgiving toward others, starting with our own families and parishes. We as Christians have to care for the needy and neglected, far and near. We cannot say we have faith and not translate it into works. There is too much misery, sadness, and heart-break in the world. Faith has to lead us to make the world a better place. We cannot merely contemplate and neglect action. We are called to be “contemplatives in action.” We can be mystics and missionaries at the same time. Our prayer has value only if we can also love and serve others. Heaven will happen if we can heal the earth. Church is inseparably connected with the soup kitchen. The temple and the market place have merged into one sacred space where God wants us to feel at home. We cannot care for the soul and neglect the body. In combining these seemingly opposite reali-ties, we become both Marys and Marthas. Remember, Jesus who went off to pray in the mountains by himself also went about feeding the hungry and healing the physical and mental illnesses of people. Jesus himself is the supreme example of the integration of prayer and service. On the other hand, there are far too many of us who are “out in the world” without the necessary connection with God. There is perhaps too much action and too little contemplation. We can get scattered without being able to listen to what God really wants us to do with our lives. That is why in prayer, we need to be able to listen to God who sends us out to serve and in the midst of our actions to listen to God who keeps calling us to come closer to him. Prayer leads to action; action leads to prayer. Mary and Martha are in a dialectical relation-ship. Their spiritualities complement and complete each other. Action: Are you a Mary or a Martha? Or are you a Mary-Martha? Temperamentally we may be drawn to one more than the other. However, listen to Jesus as he draws you closer to his heart in prayer and wants you to share your life with others in concrete deeds of love and service. Are you willing to be engaged both in contem-plation and action? Are you ready to be Jesus’ authentic disciple? Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

A member of the RCIA team will follow up with details about the program, which begins in Septem-ber. Registration forms are available in the Pastoral Center.

New and continuing registra-tion is now being accepted for the 2015-16 Faith Formation program. Registration forms may be found on the parish

website www.stveronicassf.com under the “Faith Formation” tab, or may be requested by calling the Faith Formation office at 650-588-1455 ext. 305. Even if your child will be coming back to Faith For-mation in the fall, a 2015-16 registration form is re-quired. Registration forms are also available in Spanish through the Pastoral Center. Please complete your registration process as soon as possible as class sizes are limited. Classes will begin in September, but the summer is needed to order books and supplies and set up the classes. A reminder that preparation for the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation are each two-year programs, beginning no earlier than first grade for Communion and no earlier than 8th grade for Confirmation.

Meditation Labyrinth Guidelines

With the opening of St. Veroni-ca’s meditation labyrinth under the trees outside the school building, the following infor-mation is provided to aide those who would like to under-stand the purpose and use of the labyrinth. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to walk a labyrinth. It is good practice to start by “quieting the mind and opening the heart.” Labyrinth walks are sometimes re-ferred to as “body prayer” or walking meditation. The entrance can be a place to stop, reflect, pray or offer an intention for the spiritual walk about to be taken. The walk around the design to the center can be a “letting go” - a quieting of the thoughts, worries, to-do lists, a letting go unto the experience of being present in the body. Ar-rival at the center - a place of prayer and meditation - is a “letting in” of God’s divine guidance and presence in our lives. When ready, the walk out - the “letting out” - takes us back into our lives, empowered by the Spirit to trans-form our lives and actions. A labyrinth can be a call to action, a transforming spiritu-al tool for people. It can aid in healing, in releasing grief, in guiding through troubled times or decision-making, in illuminating our purpose in life. It can act as a tool of celebration and thanks. Our commitment to enter into the sacred spiritual walk should not be merely once, but as part of an ongoing spir-itual practice.

It is with great joy that we welcome into our church and community the following

Reflecting on the Word

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Paul tells the Ephesians to be “imitators of God.” This seems to be an odd instruction. Aside from the question of whether anyone can imitate God, we might also ask, do we want to imitate anyone? No one admits to wanting to be a copycat. Yet a certain impulse to imi-tate seems to be built into our human nature. Some have even argued that imitation is at the heart of human desire; a major factor in the desirability of something is our per-ception of its desirability to others. When I see another desiring something, desire is awakened in me. If my desire is awakened by another person’s desire, this might explain the conflict that arises so often in hu-man relationships. If you and I both want the same ob-ject - whether it is a person or a position or a product - and we can’t both have it, then my gain is your loss, and vice versa. And because of such rivalry, we come to view life as a competition and others as a threat, which leads to the evils of which the Letter to the Ephesians speaks: bitterness, fury, anger, shouting and reviling. If this is true, why does Paul call on us to imitate God? Because imitating God is not like imitating another person. My gain is not God’s loss; God is not a rival with whom I am in competition because God needs noth-ing, God lacks nothing. In fact, God is the source of all things. God is pure generosity without boundaries and God desires nothing but that we should share in God’s goodness. This is what Paul means when he tells us to imitate God. We are to claim our share of God’s infinite goodness by being “kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.”
