"Eternal Rest Grant Unto Him, O Lord …"
From the Pastor’s Desk
been used to the life-long Pope, despite his ill-ness and diminishment as we saw in the case of Pope John Paul II, the news of the present Pope’s resignation may come as shocking/surprising/saddening/confusing. It must have been a heart-wrenching decision for him to make. Let us keep the Holy Father in our hearts these days. The Universal Church is a dynamic presence of Jesus in the world. May these days of transition be guided by the light and power of the Holy Spirit. There will be an avalanche of media attention on the Catholic Church these days, which is a sign that the Church has a role to play in the modern world with her enduring values and abiding faith. The Holy Father has always been the conscience of the world, speaking out the truth, calling for jus-tice, criticizing war and violence, comforting the suffering, and wishing God’s universal blessings on all human beings.
Word of God: This first Sunday of Lent, in the gospel from Luke, we read about the three temptations of Jesus. Jesus himself was tempt-ed. What about us? No one is exempt from temptation. Jesus participates in our human condition of being tempted. Jesus stands up-right and wise and strong in facing the tempta-tions and overcoming them. That Jesus himself was tempted makes Jesus so much more hu-man for us. Therefore we can approach him with confidence and trust. He knows what it is to be tempted and to be struggling with sin. Jesus understands us, accepts us, challenges us, graces us, guides us, protects us, energizes us as we struggle through our daily temptations.
Your Friend & Pastor,
Father Charles Puthota
Dear Parishioners, What shall we give up for Lent? Give up complaining——focus on gratitude. Give up pessimism——become an optimist. Give up harsh judgments——think kindly thoughts. Give up worry——trust Divine Providence. Give up discouragement——be full of hope. Give up bitterness——turn to forgiveness. Give up hatred——return good for evil. Give up negativism——be positive. Give up anger——be more patient. Give up pettiness——become mature. Give up gloom——enjoy the beauty all around you. Give up jealousy——pray for trust. Give up gossiping——control your tongue. Give up sin——turn to virtue. Give up giving up——hang in there! Archbishop’s Annual Appeal: We have official-ly launched a month-long campaign for Arch-bishop’s Annual Appeal. I spoke at all Masses last weekend, inviting everyone to participate in this appeal so that we can assist our Archbishop in his ministry, mission, and services. I have also written to over 2000 people in the parish, and have reprinted the letter in the parish bulletin. As a way of thanking the donors, I will be plac-ing their names in the bulletin in the next four weeks. We need to reach the goal of $47,900. Please donate! Please make your checks payable to: Archbishop’s Annual Appeal.
Pope’s Resignation: This news has taken the world by storm. Only four Popes in the past have resigned: Pope Benedict IX in 1045, Pope Gregory VI in 1046, Pope Celestine V in 1294 and Pope Gregory XII in 1415. Pope Benedict XVI is praised widely for his faith and humility in making this decision. For us who have always

Reflecting on God’s Word
Lent’s journey will take us to the celebration of the pas-
chal mystery of Easter. During these forty days we are invited
into a space of sensory deprivation when we gather for wor-
ship: no flowers on the altar, no music for its own sake but
only to accompany our singing, and no additional decorations
that might distract us from the task at hand: to prepare our
minds and hears to renew our baptismal promises during the
celebration.
We will be asked both to renounce Satan and all his
perks and promises and to place our wholehearted trust in God
who created us, in the Son who redeemed us, and in the Spirit
who dwells within us and enlightens us. Lent is a serious sea-
son but not necessarily a somber one; it is the waiting room for
Easter joy.
Just as Jesus was tempted throughout his ministry to turn
aside from his mission, his followers will be, too. The three
temptations speak to our own experiences when we seek self-
gratification rather that the glory of God.
God’s word today calls us to make God our true nourish-
ment, our true wealth, our faithful source of strength, and the
solid foundation or our trust. Paul’s bold proclamation to the
Romans extends to us: the Lord enriches all who call upon
him. All who call on him will be saved. - From “Living the Word”
