St. Bruno Parish is a mul -cultural community, founded in 1912, that welcomes everyone to worship God, especially through the Holy Eucharist and Perpetual Adora on, to grow in the faith and to serve the less fortunate in order to be light and truth for others.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Nuevo tipo de santos Me llamó especialmente la atención la columna del p. Ron Rolheiser en el último número de Catholic San Francisco. (CSF, 5 de diciembre de 2019, p. 15). Comienza con una ob‐servación de una asistencia masiva decreciente y de que la iglesia se está marginando más. ¿Qué explica esto? ¿Podría ser la razón el abuso sexual, las liturgias pobres y la predicación, el liberalismo, el conservadurismo o la riqueza? Concluye que la respuesta es una combinación de todo lo mencionado anteriormente, pero destaca la riqueza. Citando a Jesús quien dijo que es difícil para una persona rica entrar al reino de los cielos, el P. Ron afirma que lidiar con la riqueza es una gran parte de nuestra lucha actual. Él dice, y esta es la parte que me gusta mucho: "Somos buenos para ser cristianos cuando somos pobres, menos educados y al margen de la sociedad dominante. Tenemos siglos de práctica en esto. Me encontré asintiendo de acuerdo con esa declaración. Él continúa: "En lo que no hemos tenido ninguna práctica, y en lo que no tenemos ninguna, es cómo ser Cristian cuando somos ricos, sofisticados y constituimos la corriente principal cultural". El P. Ron dice que no lo sabe y que nadie tiene la respuesta todavía. Sin embargo, creo que el nuevo santo será una réplica de los caminos del mundo; no de una manera que repele, sino de una manera que atrae. Me imagino a este santo como algui‐en que aprecia las cosas buenas de la vida, pero elige vivir con sencillez. New Kind of Saints I was particularly struck by the column of Fr. Ron Rolheiser in the latest issue of Catholic San Francisco. (CSF, Decem‐ber 5, 2019, p. 15). He starts off with an observation of a decreasing mass attendance and of the church becoming more marginalized. What accounts for this? Could the rea‐son be sexual abuse, poor liturgies and preaching, liberal‐ism, conservatism or affluence? He concludes that the an‐swer is a combination of all the aforementioned, but he highlights affluence. Citing Jesus who said that is difficult for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven, Fr. Ron claims that dealing with affluence is a huge part of our present struggle. He says, and this is the part that I like a lot, “We’re good at being Christians when we’re poor, less-educated, and on the margins of mainstreams society. We have centuries of prac-tice at this.” I found myself nodding in agreement to that statement. He continues, “What we haven’t had any prac-tice at, and aren’t any at, is how to be Cristian when we’re affluent, sophisticated, and constitute the cultural main-stream.” I think he hit the nail right on the head. There’s more. “What we need today is not so much a new pastoral approach as a new kind of saint.” This new kind of saint is one “who can model for us what it means to live out the Gospel in a context of affluence and seculari‐ty.” (Emphasis are mine) He supports this claim by stating that history teaches us that religious renewal comes not from conferences and synods but from individuals like St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ignatius and others, who can reshape our religious imagi‐nations. How will this new saint look like? How will this new kind of saint impact the mainstream culture and reawaken reli‐gious fervor? Fr. Ron says that he doesn’t know it and no one has the answer yet. I believe, however, that the new saint will be a countersign to the ways of the world; not in a way that repels, but in a way that attracts. I imagine this saint as one who appreci‐ates the finer things of life, but chooses to live in simplicity. I visualize a saint who stands unequivocally on the side of truth even when lying seems to be the norm. I dream of someone who speaks out calmly and rationally for justice even when all others are foaming and raging in anger and hatred. Yes, I believe in this new kind of saint, because al‐ready, I sense his/her presence in our own church. No, the church is not a spent force. I believe that it is gathering energy for a new Epiphany.

*** We’re celebrating 60th anniversary of our church! Here’s a page from history. “The doors of the present St. Bruno's were opened for the first time with a Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve December 24th, 1959.” The church was erect‐ed in the modern mission style by Fr. Rev. John G. O'Connell, pastor from 1958 to 1963. We’ll have a special ceremony commemorating that historic event.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!

REASON TO REJOICE Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its char-acter as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, for-merly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is in-fused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s pres-ence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). Muchos de nosotros podemos sentirnos tan desanimados como Juan el Bautista. Aclamado y alabado como un nuevo profeta un minuto, luego encarcelado por decir la verdad al poder, al siguiente. Era un heraldo radicalmente diferente, claramente llamando al pueblo al arrepenti-miento, pero dispuesto a ser políticamente incorrecto al enfrentarse a los sumos sacerdotes y al rey. Esto ir en contra del "clericalismo" de la época, lo convirtió en un objetivo. En los tiempos modernos, es posible que nos encontremos en una posición similar de defensa de un grupo, pero con una fuerte oposición de otro. Pero cuan-do John se aferró a sus convicciones, fue asesinado y luego triunfó como el único en decir la verdad, debemos perseverar como lo hizo. El desánimo con el que po-demos encontrarnos, solo puede ofrecerse como un sacri-ficio, preparándonos aún más para el Adviento. Siempre habrá conflictos en el mundo, en la política, el lugar de trabajo, la familia e incluso en la iglesia misma. Las per-sonas buenas serán aparentemente "condenadas" en su rectitud, pero a la vez equivocadas en sus intentos de cambiar las cosas a su favor. Este juego de poder obvio puede parecer abrumador y desalentador, pero todo lo bueno puede venir de todo desánimo. Simplemente con-fiamos, seguimos adelante y sabemos que Dios tiene las cosas bajo control. Desde nuestro punto de vista, no po-demos ver su plan general, pero la confianza trae paz y el desánimo disminuye. Many of us can feel as discouraged as John the Baptist. Hailed and lauded as a new prophet one minute, then imprisoned for speaking truth to pow-er, the next. He was a radically different herald , clearly calling the people to repentance, Yet will-ing to be politically incorrect in standing up against the high priests and king. This going against the "clericalism" of the day, made him a target. In modern times, we may find ourselves in a similar position of standing for one group , yet met with strong opposition from another. But as John held to his convictions, was killed, and later triumphed as the only one to speak the truth, we must persevere as he did. The discouragement with which we may be met, can only be offered up as a sacrifice, further preparing us for Advent. There will always be conflict in the world, in poli-tics, the workplace, the family and even in the church itself. Good people will be seemingly "convicted" in their righteousness, yet misguided in their attempts to change things to their ad-vantage. This obvious power play can appear over-whelming and discouraging, yet good can come from all discouragement. We simply trust, forge ahead and know that God has things under control. From our vantage point, we can not see his overall plan, but trust brings peace and discouragement abates.
