The Search
The magi come from the East sincerely searching for "the newborn king of the Jews," following the signs given them by God. The magi's story is our story: those who "search diligently" for Christ will find him if they follow the signs given by God. Ultimately, our searching to find Christ is only satisfied when we remain open to the God who labors diligently to reveal the divine Son to us, a God who labors to reveal the divine Son even more diligently than we ever could. Sometimes we grow discouraged in our search for God. But the truth is that we find God not because we search but because God reveals. God gives us, too, all the signs and wonders we need to search for, find, and offer the gift of ourselves to this King who is ever newborn into our hearts.

Now is the time to Plan Your Summer Wedding at St. Veronica Church
The policy of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francis-co states that arrangements for marriage are to be made at least six months in advance. These months are meant to give couples the opportunity for prayerful reflection on Christian marriage and for consideration of their future life as "two who will be made one." Your first step is to call our Parish office at 650-588-1455 to schedule an appointment to meet with a member of the clergy. During the initial meeting, preliminary information will be taken and an evaluation of your readiness to marry will be as-sessed. Other information will be provided regarding the Mar-riage Preparation Program and FOCUS questionnaire. You will also have the opportunity to set up future meetings with clergy, our wedding coordinator and music director who will all work with you in preparing your special day. Calendars fill up quickly and schedules get busy, so don't delay in setting up your initial wedding appointment.
Stewardship Reflection
God has given each one of us many good gifts. As stew-ards, let us use the gifts He has given us – our time, our talent, and our treasure – at home, at church, at work, and wherever else we find ourselves, to glorify Him and, in so doing, call others to encounter Christ and live for Him.
In the New Year, Do One Tick at a Time (Reprinted from January 1, 2012 bulletin, as bulletins were lost in
shipping from the printer.)
The clock master was about to fix the pendulum of a clock when, to his surprise, he heard the pendulum speak. “Please, sir, leave me alone,” the pendulum pleaded. “It will be an act of kindness on your part. Think of the number of times I will have to tick day and night. So many times each minute, sixty minutes an hour, twenty-hour hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year. For year upon year…. Millions of ticks. I could never do it.” But the clock master answered wisely, “Don’t think of the future. Just do one tick at a time and you will en-joy every tick for the rest of your life.” And that is exactly what the pendulum decided to do. It is still ticking merrily away. (The Prayer of the Frog, Vol. II)
Reflection: Poised on the threshold of another year, we are about to bring down the curtain on 2011 and ring in the New Year 2012. We would like to say “thanks” to all that has been and “yes” to all that shall be. God in Jesus has been with us in 2011 in small and big things that came our way. When we thought we couldn’t take another step, He was by our side, leading the way and gracing our moments and filling us with hope. Through the mists of grief and sorrow, disease and death, His presence shone through. When we felt happy and successful, too, His presence filled us, show-ing that all blessings come down from His loving hands. We begin the New Year with hope and optimism. We may have a tendency to carry the sad and bad things that happened in 2011 over to 2012. We may have been hurt or disappointed or shocked by what may have hap-pened to us. Sometimes, our choices may have led to consequences we regretted or loathed. At other times, our lives may have veered off into a weary, loveless, and joyless humdrum of live. We have to be mindful about not carrying baggage from last year into the New Year. Also, there is a possibility that we could be suf-fering from nostalgia for the good and beautiful things that came our way in 2011. This could lead us to an idol worship of the memorable things of the past, with the result that we are unable to welcome the present with fresh eyes, open arms, and hopeful hearts.
Of course, we worry and fret about how this year will turn out to be. What good things are we going to en-counter this New Year? What sad things are going to happen to us? However, let us not strive to see the dis-tant scene. Let us not be overwhelmed by what we have to do or how we must cope with the challenges and or-deals of life. All we have to do is to take one moment at a time: pack that moment with as much love and energy as possible. There may be setbacks and heartaches, but even those will become moments laden with grace and faith. Let’s meet each person as if he or she were the only one in this world. Let’s deal with the task at hand as if it were the only task to be done in the world. Let’s live in love in the present moment. The present moment is where God meets us because our God is the God of the present. Remember the saying: “Yesterday is histo-ry, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift---that’s why we call it the present.” Let us do one tick at a time. We’ll tick merrily away the whole year of 2012 and beyond!
Let’s ponder some of these insightful sayings: “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year’s words await another voice” –T.S. Eliot “The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul”—G.K. Chesterton “Cheers to a new year, and another chance for us to get it right”—Oprah Winfrey
Action: Embrace the New Year by trying to shake off sadness or nostalgia for things past. Look at and relate to people without paying attention to their past as if you were meeting them for the first ever time. The past in-terferes too much in our present and ruins our future. Bring a fresh and unsullied outlook on people and circumstances. Here’s a person in front of you, full of possibilities; here is a situation calling for your creative and positive approach. That person’s past is gone; the future doesn’t exist. This situation or event in this particular form has never happened in your life before. Meet that person in the present moment. Bring all your resources to deal with this situation.

News from Catholic Worker Hospitality House
Dear Friends, Thank you for your generous response to the Giving Tree Pro-ject. The gifts we received from St. Veronica’s enabled us to provide gifts to all our guests at our annual Christmas Dinner. It’s always a heart-warming sight when a guest emerges from the gift room beaming with delight and waving their Christ-mas present. Thanks for helping to make this Christmas a merry one for our guests. Happy New Year, Peter Stiehler For all of us at Catholic Worker Hospitality House
IF NOT NOW, WHEN?
John the Baptist, in his role as a wandering prophet, drew large crowds. He declared it was not enough to be born Jew-ish; everyone needed to repent and be washed clean of their sins. When he bap-tized Jesus (Mark 1:7-–11), the appearance of the Holy Spirit that followed showed who Jesus really is. It marked a new reality. Baptism is now a symbol of death and rebirth to new
life, while the gift of the Holy Spirit confers power on believers to live as children of God. After Jesus’ resur-rection, the apostles continued to baptize and confirm in his name. Think about this! God has given us the means to live as God’s own sons and daughters, with the hope of eternal life. Our response requires effort, persistence, sacrifice, and selflessness. The enemy of the life of faith is not unbelief, but apathy. We get tired of trying. But a life with Christ says if not now, when? If not you, who else? Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. Sing to the Lord
Do you sing in the shower? Do you sing while driving? Can you sing Happy Birthday? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are qualified to join the St. Veroni-ca Adult Choir. New members are always welcomed, but now is the time to join in case you have been putting it off. Feel free to join for a shorter commitment and practice with us as we begin our preparations for Holy Week and Easter celebrations.
Family Connection The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is thought by some to be rooted in the gift giving of the Magi. In many cultures, gifts are not exchanged at Christmas, but rather on the feast of the Epiphany. Whenever you exchange your Christmas gifts, take some time to reflect on this tradition of gift giving at Christmas. Think of the best gift you have received. What was it? What made it special? Was it the gift itself, the thought that went into it, or the person who gave it to you? The gifts of the Magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—have come to be understood as symbols of Christ's royalty, divinity, and eventual suffering and death. They are special because in giving them, the Magi acknowledge who Jesus was to be: our Savior. We pray that we will acknowledge Jesus as Savior in all that we do and say.
A Prayer for our St. Veronica Athletes
God our Father, You have created us to strive for the best.
Grant to all athletes, coaches, and fans, strength to pursue excellence
during this season, and in all that they do.
We pray for the safety of these athletes; protect them from injury and harm. And finally, we pray for your grace,
that you would provide us with the endurance to pursue our heavenly prize:
eternal life in Your Son. Amen
