Understand the Word

Three parables illustrate aspects of the growth of the reign of God: the field sown with weeds, the mustard seed, and the yeast in the dough. In the first parable, good seed is sown, but weeds grow up along with the crops. This represents a community that includes both good and bad. Purging should be delayed. The time of harvest will come when separation will take place. the second and third parables address the reign's unimpressive beginnings, its gradual and impercepti-ble growth, and the extraordinary yield that it will ultimately produce. Jesus' teaching ends with a solemn admonishment: Whoever has ears ought to hear and understand this. Jesus says God's active presence in the world is something as small as a mustard seed and as fragile as a pinch of yeast, yet each contains a power that, when released, will bring about growth and expansion. What do you see as "weeds' in your life? How can the patience and kindness of God work

through you? Living the Word

From the Pastor's Desk Dear Parishioners, Musings about the Word of God---God's Might and Mercy: President Abraham Lincoln was ad-dressing a gathering one time when a woman, a fiery patriot, upbraided him for referring to the southerners as erring human beings who de-served compassion and friendship. The woman expressed to Lincoln that he should have called them enemies to be destroyed. Lincoln smiled dis-armingly and said, "Ma'am, am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?" It is true that we have to destroy our enemies, but the best way---and the Christian way---is by show-ing them goodness and kindness and gentleness to such an extent that they are turned into our friends. It's Jesus' way. He invites us to love our enemies and pray for those who do harm to us. Often times, we mistakenly think that, when we show mercy and forgiveness to others, we be-come weak and fragile. The truth is that mercy is a sign of awesome strength. Only the mature and mighty are capable of forgiveness. Those who keep grudges are indeed those who lack wisdom and strength; they are indeed petty, immature people. It is this insight about the mighty showing mercy that comes through the Word of God this weekend. In the Book of Wisdom we realize that even though God is master of might, He judges with clemency and that He rules over us with much le-nience. In the Gospel, there are several parables about the Kingdom of God. The first one is about the wheat and the weeds. God lets the weeds to stay on. He does not have them removed with haste. He just lets them be. He shows such gen-tleness and patience. We are aware that in our hearts too there are weeds and wheat. God deals with us gently and hopes that we will collaborate with His grace to grow the wheat and remove the weeds. We know too well that weeds take up the energy and strength we need to grow the wheat. Lack of forgiveness and the bitterness and the grudge-keeping, for example, can take up all the energy and positive outlook we so desperately need for love and joy. Also in our relationships with others, how do we deal with people who are a

mixture in varying degrees of the wheat and weeds? Christianity is about the miracle of the process of weeds turning into wheat. It seems impossible, but with God everything is possible. Christianity is about enemies being turned into friends. It's about sinners turned into saints. It's about hate turning into love. It's about despair turning into hope. Are we ready for such a no-ble Christian calling? What can we do on a daily basis in our own circumstances to live the message of might manifesting in mercy. Summer Musings: As summer is progressing and your children and grandchildren are enjoy-ing their vacation, I hope you are taking the rest and relaxation you deserve. The seasons out-side can be a metaphor for the seasons of the heart. As time progresses and our life journey continues, the seasons of the heart can provide the much-needed diversity and change of feel-ing. As I write this piece, I'm in New York visiting family. I took the opportunity to visit New Hamp-shire and Boston as well. My visit to Boston, my first time there, was filled with a feeling of love for this city steeped in history and tradition. The harbor cruise and the guided tour of the city on a sight-seeing bus brought alive the various part of the city. As always, a city like Boston will take some days at least to get acquainted with. But the initial impressions of anything in life, espe-cially the beautiful things, are always precious and exciting. As I was reading thousands of pages of American literature for my Ph.D. pro-gram some years ago, I was also reading up on American history as an essential element of understanding literature. One of the fascinat-ing features of American history for me then as now is the rapid development of this nation into a mighty and highly developed country. All this happened within 200 years after independence! God has truly blessed this nation. My prayer is that the good Lord may continue to make this nation a chosen people for the world of today in forging peace and development for all peoples all over the world. Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (often ab-breviated RCIA) is the process through which inter-ested adults are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic faith and way of life. Do you or know someone who longs to have a closer relationship with our Heavenly Father? Ask about the RCIA sessions for those who are not bap-tized, are of other faiths, or are curious about ex-ploring the Catholic faith. Call the rectory office at 650-588-1455 for more de-tailed information.

Family Connection Taken together, the parables found in today's Gospel offer both a sobering reminder about the Kingdom of God and words of encouragement. As the wheat and the weeds must grow together until the harvest, so we may not know whether our actions contribute to God's Kingdom until God's final judgment. With this word of caution in mind, we act always in prayer that our ac-tions will be consistent with God's plans. In the parables of the mustard seed and the yeast, we hear words of encouragement. God can bring the Kingdom of Heaven from even the smallest of beginnings. Thus, we ask God to work through us for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Set aside some time this week to make bread with your family. Show the amount of yeast that is required to raise an entire batch of bread. Observe that little things can go a long way. After the bread has been baked, gather together as a family. Read together today's Gos-pel, Matthew 13:24-43. Reflect together on what Jesus means when he teaches that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed and like yeast. In these parables, Jesus is teaching us that God can work wonders from even the smallest beginnings of the Kingdom of God. This means that even the little things that we do can make a big difference in the lives of others.
