Putting it All in Perspective
Robert Fulghum tells the story of a troubled man who
paid a visit to his rabbi. He had experienced a great deal of
failure in his life and didn’t feel that he had what it takes to
accomplish his dreams. After listening to the man’s tale of
woe, the rabbi instructed him to seek out page thirty of the
New York Times Almanac. That would be of help.
Following that instruction, he found that the almanac
entry was a list of the top hitters in the annals of baseball,
with Ty Cobb leading the pack with a .376 batting average.
Puzzled as to how that applied to his problem, he returned
to the rabbi for an explanation. The rabbi explained that
that page of Hall of Fame hitters represented people who
in essence failed about seven out of every ten times at bat.
So if he thought his track record of failure was a
problem, he needed to think again. The many failures put
him in league with some of the greatest hitters baseball had
ever known.

Living God’s Word
Being a disciple doesn’t necessarily require
that we leave our current lives behind. Some-
times discipleship requires that we stay right
where we are and care for the people God has
placed within our reach.

From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Happy Independence Day to you! This weekend we
continue to celebrate the spirit of American Independ-
ence. I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July! Let’s
cherish the blessings God has showered on this nation.
This nation, as you know, is a city on a hill, a light to
the nations. This is a land with a mission from God to
spread peace to the whole world and to ensure that no
one on earth will be deprived of those basic necessities
without which dignity of life cannot be upheld. This
Independence Day weekend, let’s lift up our hearts to
God in thanksgiving and pray for our nation and the
whole world. God Bless America! God Bless America
from Sea to Shining Sea!

Father William, the old priest, made it a practice to visit
the parish school one day a week. He walked into the
4th grade class, where the children were studying the
states, and asked them how many states they could
name. They came up with about 40 names. Father Wil-
liam jokingly told them that in his day students knew the
names of all the states. One lad raised his hand and said,
“Yes, Father, but in those days there were only 13
states.”
4th of July Facts:
The 4th of July was not declared a national holiday until
1941.
When the United States became a country in 1776, there
were approximately 2.5 million people living in the
country. This Fourth of July 2013, the population is
around 313.2 million.
The youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence
was 26-year-old Edward Rutledge. The oldest signer
was Benjamin Franklin. He was 70. Most of the signers
were in their 30s and 40s.
The American flag was adopted on June 14, 1777.
