About Our Cover

The story of Jesus visiting Martha and Mary is one of the most well known and frequently used stores in the New Testament. Often the two sisters are contrasted, with Mary getting the praise and Mar-tha the putdown. But it may not be that simple. Remember, “Jesus loved Martha and her sis-ter” (John 11:5)

SPIRITUALITY & PRAYER

W e can pray that we find the balance between serving the Lord in our brothers and sisters and spending time in the presence of the Lord, both as members of the community of believers and as indi-viduals whom Jesus loves very much.

Something to Consider • Martha and Mary show two ways of being in Christ’s

presence – (1) through active service (2) through direct attentiveness *Which of these sisters are you most like? *Why?

ARE YOU MARY OR MARTHA?

Dear Friends, Have you heard the story of an old monk who had been pray-ing for years for a vision from God? Finally it was granted. God appeared to him in his monastery cell. The monk was overcome with emotion---and devotion. As he was on his knees, worshipping God, the monastery bell rang. It was time to feed the poor at the gate, and it was the old monk’s turn to distribute food. Torn between the desire to stay with God and the need to feed the poor, between the heavenly vision and the earthly duty, the monk agonized over what he should do. Fi-nally, he tore himself away from the vision and went off to feed the hungry. Hours later when he returned to his cell with a heavy heart, he found the heavenly vision still waiting for him. God said to him: “My son, if you had not gone off to feed the poor, I would not have waited for you.” Often we feel a spiritual tension between our love for God and service of others. It is a healthy tension which can lead us to a balance of life. Love of God and love of neighbor is not a mat-ter of “either/or” but it is one of “both/and”. We can and must engage in both love of God and love of neighbor. It’s not a question of choosing one or the other. This is symbolized charmingly in the story of Mary and Martha as they relate to Jesus and to each other. Temperamentally, I find myself more on the side of Martha, not least because my mother’s name is Martha. It is true that we have to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to him. It is also true that we need to feed Jesus and take care of his needs. Je-sus’ statement that “Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her” does not mean that he does not want his basic needs taken care of by Martha. It is said that Jesus in this story was on his way to Jerusalem. He knew he was going to suffer and die there. Obviously, he was going through deep emotions and perhaps anxieties about what was going to happen to him. Remember, “Jesus was like us in everything except sin.” Jesus needed someone to listen to him deeply, and that need was provided tenderly by Mary. Mary too needed to be connected with Jesus for her peace and harmony. This is what we do when we go to Church and practice various sacraments, rituals, and devotions. We listen to Jesus who speaks to us and touches us. We discover ourselves and feel the spiritual connection. We become Marys in this process. However, Jesus also sends us out to the world to feed the hun-gry as that old monk was asked to do. We have to be Marthas as well if we truly have to be Jesus’ disciples. We have to help and heal others, be kind, compassionate, forgiving toward oth-ers, starting with our own families and parishes. We as Chris-tians have to care for the needy and neglected, far and near. We cannot say we have faith and not translate it into works. There is too much misery, sadness, and heartbreak in the world. Faith has to lead us to make the world a better place.

We cannot merely contemplate and neglect action. We are called to be “contemplatives in action.” We can be mystics and missionaries at the same time. Our prayer has value only if we can also love and serve others. Heaven will happen if we can heal the earth. Church is inseparably connected with the soup kitchen. The temple and the market place have merged into one sacred space where God wants us to feel at home. We can-not care for the soul and neglect the body. In combining these seemingly opposite realities, we become both Marys and Mar-thas. Remember, Jesus himself who went off to pray in the mountains by himself went about feeding the hungry and heal-ing the physical and mental illnesses of people. Jesus himself is the supreme example of the integration of prayer and ser-vice. On the other hand, there are far too many of us who are “out in the world” without the necessary connection with God. There is perhaps too much action and too little contemplation. We can get scattered without being able to listen to what God really wants us to do with our lives. That is why in prayer, we need to be able to listen to God who sends us out to serve and in the midst of our actions to listen to God who keeps calling us to come closer to him. Prayer leads to action; action leads to prayer. Mary and Martha are in a dialectical relationship. Their spiritualities complement and complete each other. Are you a Mary or Martha? Or are you a Mary-Martha? Tem-peramentally we may be drawn to one more than the other. However, listen to Jesus as he draws you closer to his heart in prayer and wants you to share your life with others in concrete deeds of love and service. Are you ready to be Jesus’ authentic disciple? Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Supporting San Bruno Catholic Worker House Our July 24 & 25, 2010 second collection will be for support-ing the good works of the San Bruno Catholic Worker House which is one of 100 Catholic Worker houses in the United States. Each is a mission modeled on the work of Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, who started the Catholic Worker newspaper in 1933 to support the poor, immigrants and Catholic social teaching. With the success of the newspaper, came the Houses of Hospitality, whose mission it is to serve, feed, clothe and shelter the poor. We have several St. Veronica volunteers who donate their gift of time to this social outreach program. Your support is greatly appreciated.
