Ref lect ing on God’s Word
When Jan’s son and his buddies were given two
weeks’ notice to moving out of their house, Jan pro-
posed that they throw a cleaning/moving party. She
provided the food, drinks, and cleaning supplies.
They provided the music and the muscle. The party
was a great success. The house got cleaned, the
move was completed in one afternoon, and everyone
went home happy. Later that week a thank-you card
arrived from one of her son’s housemates. “Thanks
for the party, Jan. We couldn’t have done it without
you. You’re the greatest. Adam.”
Do we take the time to reflect back on each day
or do we just keep moving on? Do we recognize the
healing in our lives or focus only on the suffering?
Do we realize that “we couldn’t have done it with-
out” God or do we attribute our successes to good
luck or our own hard work? Do we, like Naaman
and the Samaritan leper, make it a habit to express
our thanks to God in public praise and in lives of
service?

Day
October is Census Month!
Our Ushers will be conducting the annual
Mass attendance Census during all weekend
Masses in October. The count will be taken as
discreetly as possible so as not to distract you
from the Mass celebration.
It is contrary to the mind of Christ to de-
prive people of the basic necessity of health
care---all in the name of economics and power politics. In the midst of the present debate in
America, shouldn’t all the churches be speak-
ing strongly in support of health care for eve-
ryone, no matter rich or poor? Health is as
basic as food or water or education or free
speech. The followers of Jesus the healer have
no choice but to be engaged in ensuring health
for everyone.
The second occasion of gratitude focuses
on the insider-outsider dilemma we face in the
world today. The drowning of over 200 people
recently near Lampedusa in Italy highlights
the problem. Naaman, the Syrian, an outsider,
receives healing from the Jewish prophet.
Outsider he may be, he will become an insider
now because of his unassailable faith in the
living God, the God of all people in the world.
The gospel portrays the odd man out, an
outsider, a Samaritan, thanking Jesus. He is
the only one who has grasped the meaning of
how deeply he is loved and cherished---and
rejoices over it with gratitude. Jesus goes
about celebrating the outsiders like the Syro-
Phoenician woman, the Roman Centurion, the Samaritan woman, the Good Samaritan, tax
collectors, sinners, prostitutes, etc. As follow-
ers of Jesus, should we not be engaged in
breaking down barriers and divisions? Should
we not be more compassionately inclusive of
the outsiders, whether they are immigrants or
poor or those outside our tight ideological,
cultural, ethnic circles?
The mandate from the Word of God is
loud and clear: Live a life of gratitude to God
by actively making God’s blessings accessible
to all!
Your Friend and Pastor,
Father Charles Puthota (This scripture reflection on the readings of this weekend’s Masses was pub-
lished in the San Francisco Archdiocesan newspaper Catholic San Francisco on
October 11, 2013)
Dear Parishioners,
John Hughes, a cab driver in New York
City for over thirty-five years, recounts a per-
sonal experience: “One time in Brooklyn, I
found an emerald ring in my cab. I remembered
helping a lady with a lot of bundles that day, so
I went back to where I had dropped her off. It
took me almost two days to trace her down in order to return her ring to her. I didn’t get as
much as ‘thank you.’ Still, I felt good because I
had done what was right. I think I felt better
than she did.”
It is disappointing to encounter ingratitude,
but what is distressing is that the person receiv-ing the gift chooses not to celebrate and rejoice
for his/her own sake---and express it in words
and deeds. Spotlighting gratitude, the Word of
God this Sunday invites us to take a closer look
at the occasions for such gratitude. They are in-
cidents of restoration of health.
Lepers experience astounding healings.
Desperate, they will do anything to be healed.
Naaman, a powerful official, humbles himself
and is cured while taking a dip in the river. The
ten lepers are cleansed by Jesus. Naaman ex-
presses his gratitude by taking the soil from Is-
rael and vowing not to offer “sacrifice to any
other god except to the Lord.” The Samaritan
leper returns to Jesus to thank him for the in-
credible blessing of healing, which will now
restore him to family and community. Fast forward! We live in a world where millions
do not have medical care. This is sadly true
both in poor and rich countries. God calls us to
set aside all sorts of obstacles to ensure health
for everyone, rich or poor.
Pope Francis’ gestures of tender compas-sion recently for the disabled children in the Se-
raphicum Institute in Assisi embody the urgent
message. He said we need to heal the wounds of
Christ in the suffering humanity, the Body of
Christ.
