THE VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION FOR HEALTH,
PHYSICAL EDUCATION, RECREATION, AND DANCE
2012 CONVENTION
NOVEMBER 9-11
The Hotel Roanoke
Share The Passion, Elevate The Profession
It’s our 75th
anniversary! It’s hard to believe that in 1937, a few forward-thinking leaders in our
profession began presenting programs for health and physical educators and started an organization
that would last for 75 years. Without their inspiration, dedication and commitment, our organization
would not have been. Throughout the years, we have continued to have dedicated professionals who
are willing to give of their time and money to serve. Today we are financially secure and, as we
continue to be good stewards, our organization should be able to continue and prosper. The
foundation of this fine association is and has been its members and their professional willingness to
collaborate, share and elevate the profession.
I am proud to have been your president for two conventions and will continue to promote healthy,
active programs in our profession. I will support the members in their professional growth, promote
their leadership, and offer opportunity to collaborate with professionals in our field. We are now in
a period of reorganization and our association stands tall. It is your membership and constant
delivery of quality programs at our conventions that enable VAHPERD to continue in its greatness!
Thank you for your continued support and tireless work in our profession. Let’s celebrate the 75th
anniversary and enjoy the past, present and future of the VAHPERD membership and the association
as a whole. I look forward to sharing the passion and elevating the profession with each one of you
during the convention.
Have fun and enjoy the 75th
anniversary of VAHPERD.
Sincerely,
Charlotte Kelso President

CAP N’DANCE Presenter: Karen Clevenger Presider: Sandra Bowie
Shenandoah
As instructors continue their quest to motivate students, let’s not forget the use of certain props that all students possess: the baseball cap! If our students are to be efficient movers (NASPE standard one of a physically educated person), we must provide them with challenging movement patterns. The use of a manipulative with dance steps can provide the next level of creativity. This session will teach an original piece of soft “hip hop” choreography that will include some of the more recognizable asymmetrical dance steps along with the use of a baseball cap. Suitable for all ages. Karen Clevenger is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, where she attended DeKalb Junior College and later transferred to West Georgia College. While at West Georgia, she was a cheerleader, a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, a participant in the Modern Dance Club, and a semi-finalist in the Miss West Georgia Pageant.
As a teacher and coach in the DeKalb system, Karen pursued a master’s degree at Georgia State University and studied dance under the direction of Katy Schane. Upon receiving her graduate degree, she joined the faculty at Emory University as a dance specialist. While adding new dance courses to the curriculum, she created and directed the Emory dance ensemble. She later joined the faculty at West Georgia College where she was again charged with the task of building the dance curriculum classes, and subsequently created and directed their college dance company called Position One. When Karen and her husband were relocated to Oklahoma, she entered the doctoral program at Oklahoma State University, became a full-time teaching associate, and directed the OSU dance company. She and her husband now reside in Carrollton, Georgia where she is again on the faculty at the University of West Georgia and is rebuilding the dance program. Karen has held four offices in GAHPERD, was chair of the dance performance section of the National Dance Association (Dance Council), and has conducted
numerous presentations at the state, district, national, and international levels. Her original pieces of choreography have been selected for performance at Kaleidoscope concerts in Georgia, Dallas, Ft. Worth and New Orleans, and at Otto von Guericke University in Germany. She is currently partnering with a German professor to study dance choreography and its effect on dementia.
Karen also presents Saturday at 9:00 am Do You Love Me . . . Virginia?
