Presidential Leadership Graduation

A Taste of AsiaDr. Kanji Watanabe took three exchange students from Hong Kong (Stephanie, Connie, and Phoebe) with six additional Cottey students to an Asian super market and a Chinese super buffet in Kansas City on Saturday, April 6. They enjoyed buying and observing various Asian food at the Asian market, and eating Americanized Chinese food at the restaurant. Everyone had a lot of fun.

See the miniature display of Cottey’s campus in the Library. Virginia Taylor, a P.E.O. from Chapter JR in Branson, created a needlepoint model of every building on the campus. This impressive work of art will be on display through Saturday, May 25.

The Cottey-Nevada Presidential Leadership Program completed its year-long program with a graduation ceremony on April 3. A select group of junior and senior girls from Nevada High School meet in 12 after-school sessions throughout the year on the Cottey College campus. Students are selected based on applications and teacher recommendations. The classes are taught by Dr. Judy Rogers, and are administered by Denise Carrick Hedges. Sessions focus on team-building, communication skills, networking, social protocol, and college selection. This program is funded through community donors.

While on campus, she worked one-on-one as a speaking coach for the students completing level 4 of the Leadership, Experiences, Opportunity (LEO) certification program, met with small groups of students, and spoke to classes.

The Leader-in-Residence program is supported by the Marjorie W. Smith Leadership Seminar Fund.

Wellness Program

Mini-Triathlon. On Saturday morning, May 11, employees have an opportunity to participate in a mini-triathlon. The triathlon will consist of just under a ¼ mile swim (8 roundtrips in the pool or 16 one ways), a 2.0 mile walk/run and a 5.0 mile bike ride. Last year’s mini triathlon was a fantastic event with lots of campus and family support so I hope you will give it some consideration for this year. Anyone wanting to sign up or looking for a partner for one or more events should e-mail Karen Polon. Employees participating in the triathlon can also earn My Reward points!

Triathlon Training. On April 15 and 16, at 5:15 p.m., Karen will lead anyone who wants to learn the running/walking route for the triathlon. Please meet on the front porch of Hinkhouse. On April 22 and 23, at 5:15 p.m. Karen will lead anyone who want to learn the biking route for the triathlon. Please meet in the Center for the Arts parking lot.

Exercise Reward Program. Keep dropping your exercise entries into the envelope on Karen’s bulletin board for the final April drawing on the 30th!!! This is your last chance to win this school year!

Employee volleyball continues on Wednesdays, at 5:15 p.m., in the Hinkhouse gym. All are welcome to participate.

Trisha Stubblefield, associate professor of English, and Nancy Kerbs, director of assessment and institutional research participated in the 2013 PEAQ Self-Study Fair on Sunday, April 7, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Annual Conference of the Higher Learning Commission in the Chicago. The fair provides an opportunity for institutions that are about to undertake the self-study process to ask questions of those who have recently completed it. The staff of the Commission reviewed all of the institutional self-study reports submitted in 2011 – 2012 and identified Cottey’s report for inclusion in the Fair and the 2013 Self-Study Resource Guide that was distributed at the Annual Conference. Congratulations to the many faculty, staff, and students who were part of Cottey’s self-study process.

Snow Geese, Bald Eagle, and Burned Prair ie

ENV331 Ecosystems - Function and Management class had a field trip to the Schell-Osage Conservation Area. Josh Cussimanio (Wildlife Biologist) showed us different management techniques. Some highlights were a Bald Eagle nest, snow geese, a burned prairie and a bird that fell prey to a predator.

Thanks to Josh, Erica Sigauke, and the 16 students who joined the trip!
