Did you know...The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic

Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan

in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American

countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico

and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is

Happiness HappeningsThe Cottey 21-Day Happiness Challenge ends on Saturday, September 21. The Challenge will culminate with a special event in Kansas City on Saturday, September 21, the International Day of Peace. Participating students, including members of LEO, will be presenting a Happiness and Peace workshop to area youth at the Historic Kansas City Marketplace.

So what happens next??? Let’s keep generating and spreading happiness! If you have been practicing the five daily habits - good for you! Keep it up - your new happiness habits are well on the way to becoming a lifetime habit - just keep practicing! If you didn’t participate, it’s not too late! Start today: three gratitudes; share a happy story; get some exercise; meditate; and do a random act of kindness. The gratitude board is on the Cottey intranet and will stay there. Pass the happiness cards scattered around campus - send one to a friend, or make a new friend by giving one to a person you haven’t met yet! Come on out to the Peace Pole on Friday, September 20, at 4 p.m. - you will be really HAPPY you did!! Generate new happiness ideas and take action that will benefit you and our community for the whole year!

Next week we will ask participants to take a brief survey about the Challenge. Please take the time to give us your feedback—that would make us really happy!!

For Further Reading...The Huffington Post recently published an article, entitled “The Habits Of Supremely Happy People” by Kate Bratskeir.

And just what are these 21 Habits?

They surround themselves with other happy people. They smile when they mean it.They cultivate resilience. They try to be happy. They are mindful of the good. They appreciate simple pleasures. They devote some of their time to giving. They let themselves lose track of time. (And sometimes they can’t help it.)They nix the small talk for deeper conversation. They spend money on other people. They make a point to listen. They uphold in-person connections. They look on the bright side. They value a good mixtape. They unplug. They get spiritual. They go outside. They make exercise a priority. They spend some time on the pillow. They LOL.They walk the walk.

Staff NewsRev. Erica Sigauke, director of spiritual life and campus diversity, and Ms. Renee Hampton, experiential learning coordinator have been invited to serve as panelists at the Third Annual President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge National Gathering, at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in late September. The Gathering offers an opportunity for students, staff, and administrators to share experiences, learn from experts, and meet administration officials who share a commitment to community service with an interfaith engagement component. The event is designed to be helpful to institutions of higher education that are just beginning programs in interfaith/community service and those with long traditions in this work. An important part of the program is celebrating all the work that is happening on campuses across the country to provide students with opportunities to develop lifelong skills in interfaith cooperation and

community service. Participants will have opportunities to tell stories about what is happening on their campus, learn about best practices, and celebrate ongoing work so that they will return to their campus inspired to take the President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge to the next level. We congratulate Erica and Renee for this special recognition of their combined efforts on the Cottey campus and in our surrounding communities!

Here’s what’s happening in the Office of Spiritual Life and Diversity:

Saturday, September 14thRev. Erica Sigauke took a group of students to the Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage to learn about how the outdoor labyrinth has been useful to some groups of spiritual communities. Father Ted Estes from All Saints Episcopal Church in Nevada led the educational session and invited our students to join in walking meditation if they wished. The group also visited the Precious Moments chapel, learning about Sam Butcher’s spiritual values and practices.

Sunday, September 15thDr. Sarah Quick, Dr. Amanda Gilchrist, and Rev. Erica Sigauke accompanied a group of students to the Indian Art Market at Haskel University in Lawrence, Kansas. Students enjoyed learning about Native American culture through booths of artifacts, as well as native food and dances. A variety of tribes were presented from the whole nation.

Spiritual Life and Diversity

Monday, September 16thThe first event of Peace Week was “Light the Night”, hosted by the Pride Alliance Club. Students enjoyed sharing peace messages and hearing speeches by Dr. Brenda Ross and Rev. Erica Sigauke.

Involuntary Wellness?

• The CVS pharmacy chain recently encouraged all employees to participate in a free health screening, (similar to Cottey’s Health Event screenings). CVS employees who opted out of the screening are now required to pay a $50 a month insurance surcharge. CVS believes the health screenings help employees take action to improve their overall health.

• Many companies will no longer hire smokers. Tobacco users typically have three times the health care costs of non-users.
