Spanish Inquisition

• The Spanish Inquisition was known to be much stricter than the Romans.

• The Spanish was created in 1478

• The monarchs were the ones to control the inquisition in Spain

• They tried to use the inquisition to hold power over recently converted people from other religions.

• The church and pope once tried to take away the Spanish's Power from the Inquisition but were unable to.

• The inquisition was ended in 1834.

Spanish Inquisition

• The main purpose for the Inquisition was to find the non- believers and remove them from the nation/religion

• The inquisition was founded to help unify Spain into one country with one religion, which was Christianity.

People in the Spanish Inquisition

• Ferdinand and Isabella wanted the Inquisition to “purify” Spain and so they asked the pope for permission.

• Tomas de Torquemada was the leader of the Inquisition for fifteen years, starting in 1483.

• He was responsible for the death of about 2,000 Spaniards

• He made rules for the inquisition and also spread it through to other cities and places.

Spanish Inquisition

• The Inquisition was ran by the inquisitor general who was in charge of the local tribunals.

• The heretics were decided by the people and then brought to the tribunal.

• Then, the accused was given a chance to confess his/her heresy and others that were also working against the Catholic church for a lighter punishment.

• But if they did not confess to the crime there would be a public ceremony and killing or life sentence in prison.

Roman Inquisition

• The romans were not happy about the Reformation so to counter that idea they created a church court called the Roman Inquisition.

• They fought against Protestantism. It was originally created to stop the spread of Protestantism in Italy but it outlived its purpose.

• Later popes increased the Inquisition’s power.

• They tried to accuse people of being Protestants, practice of witchcraft, or breaking church law.

• The people that were involved in the inquisition is the pope and cardinals

• Francesco Patrizi, Giodano Bruno, Tommaso Campanella, Girolamo Cardano Cesare Cremonini, Galileo Galilei, Demenico Scandella, and Pope Clement VII

How did it Cause Disunity to Europe?

• The inquisition was sent all around Europe. The protestant did not like that idea and as the inquisition was sent all over Italy the Protestant stopped the local inquisitions. Which lead to the Catholic Church losing power.
