Over the last decade, plus, I’ve been asked numerous times; “What do Ido to really land the interview?” The days of walking into a company and

just “talking” to someone are about over. More than ever, people have toface the cold hard fact that companies are seriously utilizing on-line jobapplication and tracking systems that you have to get through rst.

Now that you’ve made it through the screening process, the phonescreen, the potential second phone screen, it’s now time for the bigmoment of the face to face interview. So what are some of the thingsthat you can do in order to really stand out and knock that interview outof the ball park?

I’ve put together my Top 10 list of what to do and what not to do during theinterview process:

1. DO your research. After prepping 100’s if not 1,000’s of candidateover the past decade to go on interviews, I know that the biggest turn

off of a hiring manager is when the potential employee has no idea aboutthe history of the company, or even what they are interview for withthe company. A huge amount of information can be found by a simple“Google” search. Some other areas you might check out are: Linkedin.com, the Chamber of Commerce website, Better Business Bureauwebsite, Facebook.com – don’t make the mistake of thinking company’sdon’t have a Facebook page. Of course the standard, and a MUST, is tomake sure you check out the company website. Take it from a recruiter – ifyou don’t do your research, don’t even bother to show up to the interview.

2. DON’T assume that the rst impression is made when you shake thehand of the hiring manager and sit down in their ofce. No, my friend,it starts when you pull in the parking lot. Dressing in the parking lot -NO. Empty beer cans falling out of the car in the parking lot - NO. Thereceptionist is just an hourly employee – WAY BIG NO NO. Many hiringmanagers will gauge interaction with the rst person the intervieweemeets in the company and weigh that in their decision. So, the long andshort, just because you are interview for a $50K a year job, don’t assume

the receptionist doesn’t matter.3. DO make sure you have at least two copies of your resume with you.Has your printer ever run out of ink at the last minute? Ever have a poweroutage at the ofce? Well so have many hiring managers. The worst thingin the world is to be ready to tell the hiring manager how you are preparedto handle anything the job will throw at you, and then they ask for a copyof your resume because they are out of ink and didn’t have time to getit printed, and you don’t have a copy. To be honest, I am guilty of usingthat trick a few times, especially for key positions that I am recruiting fora client.

4. DON’T spend the rst 10 minutes of the interview talking about thehiring managers photo’s on their desk and what all you have in commonand then think it was a great interview. The purpose of the interview if foryou to learn about the job and the company and the company to see if

you are a match for them. Just because you and the hiring manager bothhave been trained in underwater basket weaving doesn’t mean that youare going to be good for the job, or that you are a going to land the job offof that fact. Skills are skills – but the hiring manager is paid to make surethey hire the person with the best skill match for what the company needsfor the position.

5. DO take the time to ll out the required paperwork. All companies havedifferent hiring requirements. Just because you’ve lled out an applicationon-line doesn’t mean that they have all of your information. Remember, tothorough and complete. Sometimes this can be reviewed to see if you canfollow instructions and how close you pay attention to details.

6. DON’T show up at the interview without questions to ask duringthe summation part of the interview. If you are using a recruiting or

agency, they should be assisting with this part. Out of the 100’s of hiringmanagers I speak with on a consistent basis, the biggest “erk” is whenthey ask if there are any questions and the interviewees respond, “No”,or “You’ve answered all the questions I had prepared.” Wow – that justdemonstrated some serious preparation didn’t it?

7. DO not be afraid to ask for the job. Too many interviewees leave theprocess, and more importantly the hiring manager, without a sense thatthey want the job. At the end of the interview, good eye contact, a rmhand shake and a simple statement that expresses your interest in theposition could just land you that position.

8. DO NOT leave without the hiring manager’s contact information. Thesecond part of the DO NOT in this one is DO NOT call the hiring managerevery day to “check in” with them about the position. If step 7 is done, youwill know when to follow up. Being a pest doesn’t show persistence’s butdoes show that you can be annoying!

9. DO make sure you check with the person that is setting up theinterview about the appropriate dress for the interview. A manual laborposition maybe ok with a nice pair of slacks and a shirt/blouse, howevera law rm would require a full blown business suit. Make sure you knowyour environment.

10. DO NOT make the mistake of not having a “thank you” letter preparedthe night before. If you have done your homework, this should be justa very simple letter of thanks to the hiring manager. Once you get toyour car, and have the hiring manager’s contact information, write in theaddress and name, and nd a post ofce ASAP. The letter showing up thenext day is one more way to get your name in front of the hiring manager.Emails will work, if requested by the hiring manager; however a nice, oldfashion letter is something that they can hold in their hand.

Remember, these are just a few tips that might help you land your nextposition. Good luck and Happy Hunting!
