on Sawmill Lake

Mansion on Sawmill Lake is located in Manning, Texas. The mansion is the newest Bed and Breakfast in the Pineywoods. It is a restored, elegant, historic home on 1,000 acres. This B&B exudes beauty, and tranquility which makes for a wonderful weekend getaway. When you visit Sawmill Lake you can explore the ruins of the ghost town of Manning; fish among the sunken logs on Sawmill Lake; take a long boat ride at dusk and experience the amazing clarity of the night sky; then wake up to the smell of coffee, the Scissor-tail flycatchers singing and a breakfast that you will not soon forget.

About Manning: Manning was first settled in about 1867, two years after the civil war, as a small lumber camp but it grew to become the second largest town in Angelina County, next to Lufkin. In its heyday, it had approximately 1,500 people and was one of the largest southern yellow pine sawmills in the South. The sawmill burned in 1916 and was rebuilt and then caught fire again on January 3, 1935. It was never rebuilt. Most of the houses were torn down and the lumber moved to other locations.

Sleeping Smarter, Cooler, Better Today, many people seem to prefer a memory foam mattress for its pressure-relieving comfort, ability to conform and adapt to each person’s body, and outstanding motion isolation. Even so, traditional memory foam technology hasn’t changed much since it was invented more than 40 years ago. While it can provide great comfort to many, others find that memory foam mattresses can sleep to hot, sink in too deeply or make it hard to adjust sleep positions in the night. Isn’t it about time that someone reinvented memory foam? Right now at Castleberry’s Furniture Showroom, we are introducing Serta’s new iComfort® Sleep System featuring their Cool ActionTM Gel Memory Foam. This revolutionary new memory foam is designed to deliver superior pressure relief and more targeted support while sleeping cooler than ordinary memory foam. We have two different comfort levels from which you can choose – firm and plush. Plus, you can put this fabulous mattress on a matching adjustable foundation, with massage, to increase your comfort even more. Whether you choose the adjustable foundation or the traditional foundation, your iComfort® sleep system is beautifully finished with a modern and tailored look. You can feel confident when you switch to a new iComfort® sleep system by Serta® with their 25-year warranty and 120-night trial period*. If you are not completely satisfied after the first 30 nights, we will exchange it for a different one…but I predict you will not want to give up this amazing mattress. If you have been considering buying a memory foam mattress set, do not do so before you try this incredible new sleep system. At Castleberry’s, we continue to live up to our tradition…giving you a better product at a better price. It’s what we do.*Some restrictions apply.

You have probably heard about it - the initiative by First Lady Michelle Obama to help improve the health of American children. Let’s Move! is a comprehensive plan, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. The program encourages providing healthier foods in our schools and at home. Ensuring that every family has access to healthy, affordable food. And, helping kids become more physically active.

What you may not have heard about is Mrs. Obama’s help launching a change from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) “old school” Food Pyramid to My Plate. MyPlate is an up-to-date model with the intent to prompt consumers to think about building a healthy plate at meal times and to seek more information to help them do that by going to www.MyPlate.gov. The new MyPlate symbol emphasizes the fruit, vegetable, grains, protein and dairy food groups and how they fit in proper proportion on the plate.

The MyPlate is a tool I have found useful in nutrition education for years. Primarily because people eat from a plate, not a pyramid, which is much easier for consumers to understand. And the new tool will be a welcome resource for parents, teachers and health care providers in getting the nutrition message across. The plate is in agreement with the USDA’s dietary guidelines which are also more practical in content this year. The dietary guidelines suggest foods to increase and foods to reduce, with a particular focus on beverages which can be a source of hundreds of empty calories for children and adults alike.

Another initiative of Let’s Move this year was a healthy recipe contest among school districts. Take time to enjoy these two kid friendly recipes created by Mt. Lebanon Elementary School in Pendleton, SC and Logan Elementary School in Topeka Kansas. The recipes were entries in the contest and included fresh fruits and vegetables you and you family can enjoy this summer.

Dietary Guidelines for Your FamilyEnjoy your food but eat less. Avoid oversized portions.

Foods to Increase

• Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.

• Make at least half your grains whole grains.

• Switch to fat free or low-fat 1% milk.

Foods to Reduce

• Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread and frozen meals – and choose the foods with lower numbers.

• Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

For many businesses, it often can take experiencing an actual crisis to answer the questions of how they should have been prepared for that disaster. For one local business owner, Joshua Norris of Practical Office Solutions, these questions are all too familiar as he sees this situation over and over again with his clients.

Norris travels all around the country working with clients. One day in 2005, as Hurricane Rita was forming in the Gulf of Mexico, he was working in Florida. Rumor had it that this hurricane appeared to be one of the most powerful hurricanes in US history and was possibly headed towards Florida where local residents were preparing for its arrival. Norris took a flight back home to Texas only to find that the storm had unexpectedly changed direction and was now headed straight for Houston.

Minutes after stepping off the plane, Norris received a frantic phone call. “I got a call from a client from a very large litigation firm in Houston, and by her tone I could tell she was very upset. The reason for her worry was not a surprise: all of their paper files – active and historical – were in the basement of a downtown Houston building. They did not know what they could do to protect these files and not have them destroyed as many files had been in New Orleans only a few days earlier during Hurricane Katrina. By the end of the call, I gave her the name of another client – a trucking company. She called the moving company with specific instructions to load up as many boxes of files as possible and head north.”

Again, it isn’t until worst case scenarios that most people act on what should have been done long ago.

Because of the technology we have today, file cabinets and file rooms will soon be a day of the past. “I still see every day a scene which should belong on a “Hoarders: Buried Alive” television show - Rows and rows of filing cabinets, boxes upon boxes of historical files, rooms full of engineering drawings, desks which look like a mountain of paper that can just fall over any minute and give the employee a number of pretty severe paper cuts,” jokes Norris.

He goes on to say that, “These papers are important business documents like contracts, invoices, resumes, checks, etc.

This has led to the statistic published by Gartner that “Companies cannot find 5-10% of their documents (paper or electronic) leading to a replacement cost of $120 per document”. Just like the “sock monster” in the dryer that “eats socks” thus forcing you to buy more, the “document monster” costs your business a lot of money.”

There are a number of ways a company can mitigate these risks. Most importantly a company can deploy an Electronic Document Management (EDM) system. This is a sophisticated software application which securely manages all of your documents from email, accounting and human resources documents, and virtually any other electronic file or paper document you have scanned. Benefits to a system such as this could also include eliminating double entry and time spent filing and retrieving your documents. Best of all, all of these documents are then stored in a central location which makes backing up everything much easier and cost efficient. This is how you can effectively have a “backup” of all of that paper, and operate in a seemingly paperless office.

To find out more about protecting your business from a disaster, contact Josh Norris at Practical Office Solutions today at (936) 238-3702, or visit the company’s web site at www.practicalos.com.

Dr. Kaywin Carter recently traveled to Israel with a group led by John Mitchell, head of the English Department at Lufkin High School. Over the years, Dr. Carter and her children have traveled to Germany, Italy, France, England and now, Israel.

The idea behind the trips is to provide reasonable, affordable opportunities for students and families to see the world outside of Lufkin. The trips are not leisurely vacations, but nonstop educational tours.

Carter says, “I have always wanted to visit Israel, but would have never been comfortable traveling there on my own.” She and the group managed to see the highlights of Israel in one week. They were completely exhausted, but it was worth every long day.

For Dr. Carter, the trip was just as much a spiritual experience as it was educational. She explains, “There is just something about seeing with your own eyes the actual places where Jesus walked.” Her faith became life as she saw the places where Jesus walked. Her favorite part of the trip was the visit to the Sea of Galilee, because it is the most

unchanged since the time of Christ. The group boarded a wooden boat in Tiberius and sailed across the water. They also visited the archaeological site of Capernaum and the site where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount. They

went up into the mountains and walked around the source of the Jordan River.

Personally, Carter enjoyed visiting Masada, the site of one of her favorite Bible stories. The group also enjoyed floating in the Dead Sea. While in the area, they saw the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Finally, they ended in Jerusalem. Carter recounts, “It’s such a holy city for so many religions and we were surrounded by worshippers wherever we went.”

As wonderful as the trip was, Carter came home rejoicing in her risen Savior.

The trip was a wonderful history lesson and an incredible visual of the Bible that provided new insight. Carter has learned, “I wanted to find that I felt closer to Christ in the Holy Land, but I realized anew that He is with me at all times, in my heart.”

16 / The Journey - June 2011

Linda Cryer

Eight years ago the winds of a new season blew through our lives. My husband and I moved to Austin with Temple Inland. This was a difficult move for us, because we were leaving behind friends and family. Lufkin had been our home for the past twenty-five years.

While away, we had a beautiful grandson born each year for five years. Our family and friends couldn’t wait for our traditional Christmas cards. Every year we added a new grandson’s beautiful face.

You ask me, “What is a grandmother?” To me, being a grandmother is the most rewarding job on earth. One moment, you’re just a new mother. The next

moment, you are an all-wise and prehistoric grandmother helping out with young and restless boys. I have to admit that after teaching in public education for the past thirty-two years, this was still a new adventure for me.

In the fine balance of things, you are sometimes serving as a second mother. However, a wise grandmother never over steps her boundaries. My grandsons’ parents should always be number one in their lives. That God given position should not be shared with anyone.

When it comes to giving hugs, a grandmother’s arms should be filled with love. She should be the kind of grandmother that her grandchildren can walk with to look for lizards or deer tracks in

the sand. Her grandchildren should be able to always know that their grandmother will be beside them wherever the paths of life may lead.

A grandmother should have patience that only wisdom from raising her own children brings. If she’s successful, she will help to model this patience for her grown children when they need it most.

The ability to shape a young mind is a life long journey. Hopefully, if God is smiling down on her, a grandmother will help create a chain of love. This chain will link the past with the future. For you see, when a child is born, so is a grandmother.

As I look back over my life, I can see that it is divided into distinct seasons. Sometimes these seasons merge slowly together. At other times, a new season starts or ends with jarring suddenness.

When a child is born, so is a grandmother.

A grandmother should have patience

that only wisdom from raising her own

children brings.

Summer with Your

GrandchildrenWithout the routine of school and sports,

summertime provides the unique opportunity for you to spend the day having fun with your grandchildren. You don’t have to spend lots of money and feed them tons of sugar to have a good time. There are many local organizations that hosts events throughout the summer. And if you get creative, there will never be a dull moment with your grandchildren. Here are a few things you can do with your grands.

Take them on a tour of your childhood. If you are currently living in the town where you grew up or were first married, show them some of the places you used to spend your time. Show them where you used to live, work, or play with friends.

Let them help you pack a picnic and take it to the park. Afterwards, go to the Ellen Trout Zoo and ride the train!

Teach them to make one of their parent’s favorite childhood desserts, and then let them make it for mom or dad.

Look into the local libraries summer schedule. They all have special events and reading times for different age groups.

ChickFilA located inside Lufkin Mall and in Nacogdoches offers monthly story time with the cow and crafts and other fun events.

Crown Colony offers Tennis lessons for many ages. You can go one day or the whole summer!

The Museum of East Texas offers Art Camp for ages 3-14 all summer long.

For more great ideas visit your local Visitor’s Centers. The Coalition also has compiled a brochure of Summer Programs that can be found at www.angelinacoalition.org

26 / The Journey - June 2011

It was through this desire to help others find faith that the seed was planted in Carlene Smith’s heart to start the mission of Seasons of Hope Center.

SOHC is a non-profit dedicated to changing the lives of women who want to overcome drug/alcohol habits, emotional problems and/or behavioral problems. It is a safe place for them to restructure their life through Jesus Christ and His teachings.

About 5 years ago, Carlene had an idea of how she could help others who are

trying to rebuild their lives by giving them a safe living environment. She wanted to help others discover God’s grace and that miracles can happen if you believe and follow God. With her life as an example of God’s love and forgiveness, she wanted to provide that opportunity to others. She sold her own home to buy a place in the quiet county setting of Hudson, Texas.

In 2009, a small trailer house was donated to become the first dorm on the 34 acres. Since then, they have built a 14 bed dorm, fencing, and obtained a van, all from community supporters and donors.

She started the rebuilding program plan through her own personal desire of working with horses. Now she uses Equine Therapy, 12 Step Program as the main life rebuilding tool for the participants. Equine Therapy is a fairly new concept in rehabilitation, but it has been proven to be successful in

areas all over the country. There have been 2 women who have graduated from the program.

Part of the therapy plan uses activities with the horses that require the participants to use creative thinking, non-verbal communication, problem solving, and respect in relationships. They will learn responsibility, face fears, learn to set and meet goals, as well as gain confidence and learn trust.

If Carlene could say anything to you it would be that God uses the horse to help the women identify hurt, anger and other problems in their life and it is very successful in helping them understand their own nature and how they need to change

The program personal growth plan requires the women to sign a personal agreement to abide by the rules of Seasons of Hope Center. When they arrive, they must leave behind many of their personal belongings, including their cell phone. They have to work on the grounds and with the horses daily. They maintain the dorm and clean and cook their own meals. They participate in program classes and attend church weekly. Participants are also required to get a job and attend The Mosaic Center. Most every participant will tell you they feel blessed that there is a place for them to live like SOHC.

According to Director Carlene Smith, Seasons of Hope Center now needs help from volunteers and

community support in order to take the center to a higher level of service. Community and state agencies are seeking partnerships with the center. Through these partners and added support from our community, we are bringing back productive, self-supporting people to our community.

Page 29: The Journey - June 2011

Darlene Atkinson has been dancing, kicking, and leaping into the lives of young children for over twenty-five years. As the owner of Academy of Gymnastics and Dance, she has overseen the instructions of hundreds of children, and some of her students have been with her for over fifteen years.

Darlene is originally from Houston, where she was adopted by a couple and their three children. People often say that children are products of their own environment; they learn what they live. Darlene is no exception. Her mother and grandmother were both dance teachers, and it was quickly apparent that Darlene had natural dance and gymnastic ability that set her apart from many others.

When she was in high school, her father took an early retirement and moved the family to Livingston, Texas where she drove to Lufkin to take dance from Judy Ann Rothrock. Darlene remembers, “She was great in all areas, especially competition routines for solo routines.”

In 1981, her family moved to Lufkin. Darlene taught private lessons to young girls who were familiar with her skilled dancing abilities. Kresta Thompson, who is still a resident in the Lufkin area, was Darlene’s first student. Word spread quickly of Darlene’s talent, and many others were contacting her for lessons.

Upon graduation from high school, Darlene attended Trinity Valley Community College on a cheer scholarship. Her team was the number one college cheer team in the nation. She would go to class all week, drive home on Friday afternoons to teach private lessons, get up Saturday morning to teach, drive back to college to cheer at football games and drive back home to teach on Sundays. She would clear out the formal dining room in her parents’ house and in this make-shift studio, her career began. At the age of 16, her clientele was growing and she needed a bigger place to teach. She rented an aerobics room from a local gym and continued her private lessons. Her schedule was hectic, but she was doing

what she loved. Little did she know that this face-paced season would soon become her life as she opened her very own dance studio.

Darlene returned home to finish her degree at Stephen F. Austin State University. In 1986 while working to finish her degree in Education with a minor in dance, she opened Academy of Gymnastics and Dance. The first studio was in downtown Lufkin on Burke Street on the second floor of a building. At this point, she felt she had come full circle, as this was the same place she had first taken dance in Lufkin from Mrs. Rothrock. The ceilings of the studio were not tall enough to adequately teach tumbling, so she moved the studio downstairs and stayed there eight years.

The business was continuing to grow, so she moved the studio to the Branch Patton building, beside what is now Logan’s. Darlene explains, “Parking was a huge problem and I was very concerned about the traffic. It just wasn’t kid-friendly.” The growing concerns led her to build on Tulane, where the studio is still operating today. She has recently broken ground on a seven-thousand square foot cheer facility that will be adjacent to the current location. The building will be a state-of-the-art facility with tall ceilings for optimal cheer instruction and a tumbling track.

Being in the dance instruction business has brought many blessings to Darlene’s life, one of which is her husband, Eric Atkinson. She first met Eric when he brought his three-year old daughter to dance at The Academy. Their relationship grew, and several years later they married. Darlene says, “He gets it; the strange hours and the long days.” After all, Eric understands the hard work that goes into pursuing a dream and running your own business. As a third generation Atkinson to lead the Atkinson Candy Company, he is building upon the foundation laid by his grandfather and father. They were marrying two passions; candy and dance.

“[Dance is] a God-given

talent that you are responsible

for and you have to use it.”

“ My pride is the success of my students, not because they go on to be professional dancers, but because you

see their own success in life.”

Page 30: The Journey - June 2011

Eric and Darlene have two sons, Austin and Beau. Darlene has also enjoyed sharing her love of dance with her daughter, Sarah. Her family is supportive of her work and any of the children can usually be found right beside mom or dad at one of the family businesses. For the past four years, Sarah has been following in Darlene’s footsteps teaching at The Academy. Recently, she was accepted to New York University for graduate school. Although she will be missed, Darlene is excited to see what the

future holds for her.

In the beginning stages of her career, Darlene was not sure if she would be able to pursue her career in a small town. She had visions of what she could do, but just didn’t know if they could happen here. Although she did not yet have children of her own, she had friends who had young children and saw the need for a dance studio in our area. She remembers, “I was encouraged by people like Terri Zeleskey, Lynell Arnold and Rona Friesen to go ahead and follow my dream.” Twenty-five years later, hundreds of her students are so glad she took the chance.

More and more, people are realizing that dancing is a sport in itself. Whether you are dancing individually, in a small group or large group, the sport demands a certain degree of athleticism and determination; traits that were modeled for Darlene by her high school coaches Sherry Nash, Greg Gooding and Katherine Saunders. She was also impacted by teachers Alice

Mitchell, Mary Butler, Willie Mae Burley and Lynn Torres, who always taught her that hard work pays off.

According to Darlene, “There is nothing greater than working with something that is most precious to a person; their child.” She has had the privilege of working with so many students, some of who have gone on to cheer for professional sports teams like Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets and Dallas Cowboys. Many of the young ladies have danced in college with the Kilgore Rangerettes or Apache Belles. Darlene says, “My pride is the success of my students, not because they go on to be professional dancers, but because you see their own success in life.”

Darlene considers dance a gift, saying, “It’s a God-given talent that you are responsible for and you have to use it.” God put her in a family of dancers and she has been blessed by this ever since. She is thankful to be able to give scholarships to assist children in being able to take lessons at her studio. The Academy uses monies raised from program book and flower sales at the recital to award

scholarships to all of the graduating seniors who attend classes.

If you are around Darlene for long, you will see that she always wears a necklace around her neck that says, “What goes around comes around.” Perhaps this is why she has been so successful.

She has spent the last twenty-five years teaching and shaping young children, and in turn, she is reaping the benefits of watching many of her students succeed in their own lives.

“There is nothing greater than working with something

that is most precious to a person; their child.”

The Academy of Gymnastics and Dance is now enrolling students for Summer and Fall classes. For more information, call 637-FLIP (3547) They also have a studio in Pineland and will be offering classes next fall in Nacogdoches at the Court Club.

Meagan Elise Swor

JJust a few weeks ago, Meagan Elise Swor walked across the stage to graduate from Hudson High School. Before she received her diploma, she gave a speech; an honor given to the Valedictorian of the graduating class. In her speech, she challenged her classmates to examine their lives and what it is they are striving towards. She asked them to make the next chapter and make it worth their while, remembering that happiness is found in giving to something greater than yourself.

Meagan has been modeling this

truth for many years.

Inspiring Young Woman

continued pg 32

Page 32: The Journey - June 2011

32 / The Journey - June 2011

Throughout her life, Meagan has had people encouraging her to do her best. Teachers were constantly pushing her to do better. She remembers that even at a young age, she wanted to be valedictorian. Her seventh grade teacher, Mrs. Peterson, wrote her a postcard challenging her to fight to achieve her goals of becoming Valedictorian. The two remain close, and are celebrating Meagan’s accomplishments this year.

On her quest to be the number one graduate, Meagan admits, “More than anything, I struggled with the need to feel perfect.” Meagan would not accept failure, and she continued to put more pressure on herself than anyone else could ever put on her. Meagan says, “It was burdensome at times and something that I am still working through.” She spent long hours studying, but she soon realized she was studying not just to make the grades in high school, but to prepare her for the future and create a good work ethic.

Along the way, Meagan has fallen in love with serving others. The summer before her sophomore year, the church she attended went on a camp-like mission trip called PowerPlant. During the day, they helped a pastor raise awareness for a church he was starting. The summer before her junior year, she attended student life camp in Ruston, LA where the group did mission work for a few hours during the day. She helped with a Vacation Bible School type program for children in low income

neighborhoods. That summer, her passion for children was born deep in her heart. From then on, she knew she was being called to work with children.

This past summer, Meagan went to Ecuador, South America with eleven others from Denman Avenue Baptist Church. The group stayed at a camp in the mountains near Patate. During the day, they drove through the mountains to a village where they did construction work on their church. In the afternoons, they had a Vacation Bible School for the children. As she watched the children come to church with their parents, Meagan realized, “God is the God of all nations, not just my small home town in Texas.”

Going to Ecuador completely changed Meagan’s world view. She says, “It opened my eyes so wide to the great need in the world and how blessed we are in America.” So many in Ecuador live in poverty. Meagan recalls being able to give the children a toothbrush and seeing their face light up with excitement. She wants nothing more than, “To love on children and tell them how much Jesus loves them.”

This summer, Meagan plans to return to Ecuador and work in a youth camp. She has also enjoyed working with children through an after school program at her church called PrimeTime.

In the fall, Meagan will be attending The University of Texas at Arlington to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. She hopes to work in the field of pediatrics, both locally and overseas. According to Meagan, “I hope to help children that need something as simple as a toothbrush to assisting with a medical need.” She wants to use the knowledge she will gain from school to help meet the physical need of these children and use that to point them to Jesus.

Happy Father’s Day to Ashlyn and Garrett’s Hall of Fame Dad and my Hall of Fame Hubby! Eighteen years ago, I married my best friend and college sweetheart (Sic ‘em Bears). Over the years, we have faced a lot of school: graduate school, medical school, residency, and fellowship. During this time we also celebrated the incredible blessings of two precious children, yet experienced illnesses of family members, and even the death of a parent. Through the trials and triumphs, his faith and trust in God have sustained him. While his profession entails many things: to our family he provides spiritual guidance, wisdom, character, integrity, and a whole lot of laughs and fun. I am especially thankful that in the years ahead, of raising teenagers and just “doing life” that he is my life mate and a wonderful dad to Ashlyn and Garrett. Happy Father’s Day! We love you!

My Daddy , M.D.

Whenever Daddy signs his name, he always writes M.D., so everyone

will know he belongs to me.

For M.D. means “My Daddy”, or something just the same. And that is why he always puts these letters

in his name.

Some letters in his name are small, but these are not, you see. He

always makes them big like that because he’s so proud of me

No one deserves to be recognized as a Hall of Fame Hubby more than my incredible husband, Jeff Buchanan. From the moment we met I could see his goodness emanate like a light from his piercing blue eyes. That goodness continues to amaze me even after almost 9 years of marriage!

I feel truly blessed to be married to such a strong Christian man who seeks God’s prompting and steps out in faith as he leads our family. He is a real estate broker and owner of Jeff Buchanan Realty, and although he works harder than anyone I know, he is always willing to take time to help anyone who needs it. God constantly places people in his life that are having a rough time, and Jeff helps them find work, a place to live, and ways to support themselves. He shows me everyday what Christ’s love looks like in action. As a husband he is everything I ever dreamed of: loving, supportive, encouraging, optimistic, industrious, adventurous and family focused. And as a mother, I truly could not ask for a better father for our two boys, Chip, who’s 6 years old, and Blake, who’s 5. He is a full time, hands-on dad, who goes above and beyond for his boys. He spends endless hours coaching T-ball & basketball, taking his family fishing, wrestling on the floor, reading to our boys, and even singing them to sleep. I tell them constantly that they have the best father I have ever known! So Jeff, from your adoring family, we thank you for all you do and wish you a very Happy Father’s Day!!!!

Dear Remi...Dear Remi,

I wanted to write you a letter on your 5th birthday, just like I’ve done every year of your life. Maybe someday you’ll be away at college and you’ll want some great pearls of wisdom from your mom and you’ll pull out one of the many letters I’ve written to you over the years and you’ll glean something from it. Or, if you’re like I was in college, you’ll open it hoping to the sweet Lord mama left you some money in it. Let me apologize ahead of time for this letter being empty of both money AND great pearls of wisdom. (Lesson #1: You can’t win ‘em all, kid.)

You’re turning five this year. Where has the time gone? Before children I used to hear that saying all the time and it really made me nauseous. I sat under the same professor at college for four years and when I graduated I never thought to myself, “wow, where has the time gone?” My senior year of high school I don’t think I ever looked at my parents across the kitchen table and thought, “Man, time has sure flown.” Because it hadn’t. It had eeked by. Slowly. Painfully, slowly. Because I wanted to be somewhere else, doing something else. And that’s how I should have felt; I was a kid and I had my whole life before me. But I’m not a kid now, I’m a parent. I don’t want time

to fly. I want it to eek by. Slowly. Painfully, slowly. Because I don’t want you to be somewhere else, doing something else.

I want you here. With me. I want your baby bangs and your little bob haircut at my kitchen table for as long as I can stand it. I want your toothbrush to always have Cinderella on it. And I want your favorite food to always be “chicken bones,” because I know what you really mean is “chicken legs” and I think it’s cute – but anyone else might think it was weird and ask for a different dorm-mate. (Lesson #2:

They say how long a minute is depends on which side of the bathroom door you’re standing on; I say it depends on if you’re the child or the parent. I’ll let you grow. You let me cry.)

I would like to take this opportunity, Remi, and say to you a couple of things I’ve wanted to say to you all year. Things that I tried to feverishly spit out of my mouth before you could run off, start twirling, pop bubble gum, roll your eyes or ask,

“Could you tell me after I watch Scooby-Doo?” Here they are, in no particular order:

You will never be able to grow your hair out like Rapunzel. Ever. So stop trying! If you do that people won’t call you Rapunzel, they’ll call you a hippie.

Stop what you’re doing, be still, look your brother in the eye and apologize. Yes, it is important. Because you will have to do it many times in your life – so grow accustomed to it. Being able to ask forgiveness will serve you well.

You have no idea how proud it makes me when you ask to go fishing with your tiara on. When you catch a lizard and put him in your purse. Or when you smell like 4-wheelers, gasoline and Bonnie Bell Lip smackers. It’s called being well-rounded and I adore that about you.

Don’t repeat everything you hear on the playground. It freaks your daddy out.

Thank you for loving sushi and being able to knock-out an entire Philadelphia roll. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

You’re right! Sno-cones are awesomeness!

I don’t think I ever looked at my parents across the kitchen table and thought, “Man, time has sure flown.”

I’m so glad Rishonna is your “sweetest, most-bestest friend in this city.” And no, I don’t know how she got that smart. And no, I don’t know how she goes to school every day and never gets in trouble. Believe me, I wish to the good Lord I did.

I don’t know why the boys won’t pick you to be on their all-boy team. But what I do know is, you could form your own team of all-girls and then beat them at whatever they’re playing. Now, that would be awesomeness!

And Remi, last week when I told you about the kids who live across the world and don’t have a lot to eat or any toys at all, thank you that in your most four year old voice you said, “Mama, we could share my movies with them, just not The Spy Next Door. Or mama, why don’t we send them the rest of your lasagna that me and daddy didn’t like?”

Here’s to another year of ideas that are as big as your heart.

Another year of vacations and laughter, sno-cones and swimming.

Another year of asking forgiveness and being forgiven.

Another year of learning and living and letting mama love all over you.

And remember our promise: I’ll let you grow. If you let me cry.

Love,

Mom

I’ll let you grow. You let me cry.

You have no idea how proud it makes me when you ask to go fishing with your tiara on.

Melissa Lee recently moved back to her hometown of Lufkin after living in Nashville for 15 years as a studio session singer. She uses her maiden name as to not mortify her husband on a daily basis. Together they have two kids, Remi and Rocco, who they adore but will admit – are pretty bad. She spends her weekends traveling and speaking to women’s groups, writing or leading in worship at her church. She is constantly astounded

at the sweetness of God, the goodness of her husband and the friendship of her mother. She can’t say “no” to a Channing Tatum movie or a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.

June, July and August are typical months for weddings. Many young ladies and their mothers spend many hours trying to make their wedding a beautiful and memorable special event. There are many guys working hard to buy that special ring and provide a home for his bride to be. There is a lot of planning and preparation that goes into a wedding.

Outside of a personal relationship with Jesus, the most important earthly relationship is marriage. It is the anchor of the family unit and communicates volumes to the children.

Children want security which comes as their parents love each other and then give out of that love to them. Love and commitment are the basic foundation of a Christian marriage. Love cannot sustain itself alone – it must be sustained by something external, a commitment. The continuing commitment to the marriage partner is sustained by a covenantal commitment and not by emotions.

In the wedding vows there is a promise to love and to cherish each other. This is a covenant that the husband and wife

make to God and each other. It is not conditional based on how good you look or don’t look, or whether you are happy. There are times that you will not feel love for your spouse, but you are to always behave love. Love is a choice you make. A meaningful marriage relationship does not just happen – it takes work! If there is romance in the relationship, someone has planned it. It is easy to take one another for granted,

but it is a challenge to meet each other’s needs and keep the marriage fresh. You get what you pay for… It is like getting on an airplane and walking past the 1st Class section. You get back in the business section and think of all those empty seats you saw. You ask the steward if you could sit in the 1st class since all the seats are not taken. The steward replies “No”! You respond by asking, “Why”? To which the steward replies, “Because you haven’t paid the price to sit in 1st Class!” A good marriage doesn’t just happen – the price tag is hard work!

There may be times that you feel like your spouse isn’t meeting your needs and you may be tempted to look elsewhere for fulfillment. The thing that will help you turn from that temptation is your commitment. Your commitment to the marriage will help you to work at establishing

an environment where love and happiness can grow. Commitment will keep you stable, hopeful, and working to make things right.Elizabeth Achtemeier expressed so well the promise that Christian couples make in the marriage vows:

I will be with you, no matter what happens to us and between us. If you should become blind tomorrow, I will be there. If you achieve no success and attain no status in our society, I will be there. When we argue and are angry, as we inevitably will, I will work to bring us together. When we seem totally at odds and neither of us is having needs fulfilled, I will persist in trying to understand and in trying to restore our relationship. When our marriage seems utterly sterile and going nowhere at all, I will believe that it can work and I will want it to work and I will do my part to make it work. And when all is wonderful and we are happy, I will rejoice over our life together, and continue to strive to keep our relationship growing and strong.Commitment is foundational to a good marriage – it is the attitude we will make it no matter what!

By G. William Newton, M.D., P.A., F.A.C.S

Before heading outdoors to enjoy the long summer days, make sure you’re armed with all the essentials for spending time in the sun, safely: a pair of sunglasses, a hat, and, most importantly, a good sunscreen.

In addition to premature aging, excessive sun exposure puts our health at risk. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than one million cases diagnosed each year. And melanoma cases – the most serious and fastest-growing type of skin cancer – have doubled in the past 20 years.

Around 90 percent of skin cancers occur on the head, neck, ears, lips or hands – those areas that are in the sun most often. Other factors that play a role in the risk of skin cancer include our age, complexion (light-skinned people have the greatest risk), any prior family history of skin cancer, and geographic location of the country (the sunny Southern states are a hot spot for increased risk of skin cancer).

A sunburn can happen anywhere, not just at the park or the pool. You are exposed to sun while driving, through a glass window in your home, or reflected off another surface such as concrete, sand or snow. The good news: it’s never too late to begin protecting your skin. Recent studies by the Skin

Cancer Foundation state that the average individual has received only 23 percent of your lifetime sun exposure by age 18 – not 80 percent as formerly thought – so there’s always a health benefit to be gained by beginning new habits, at any time in life.

Protect your skinTo protect your skin, start with a good sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Be sure to choose a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection, also called a ‘broad spectrum’ sunscreen. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays – ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B rays (UVB) – affect the skin differently. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply, causing DNA and collagen damage, and play a significant role in skin aging and in the development of skin cancers. UVB rays, on the other hand, are shorter, more intense rays that cause skin color changes (such as a burn or tan), and can also quicken skin aging. UVB also plays a key

role in the development of skin cancer. Protect your skin all day, but especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the prime time for sunburns. Remember that it’s still possible to get a sunburn on cloudy days, too. 60 % of UVA and UVB penetrate through clouds. Apply plenty of sunscreen (about an ounce, which is the equivalent of a shot glass of lotion), 20 to 30 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply frequently – about every two hours – particularly after exercise or water activities.

Size, shape and color Keep an eye on freckles, moles and other spots on your skin, and show any changes to your doctor or dermatologist. Warning signs to look for include a mole, birthmark or brown spot that over time changes color or texture, increases in size or thickness, has irregular outlines, or is bigger than 6 millimeters or a quarter-inch (the size of a pencil eraser). If you have any spot or sore that itches, hurts, crusts, scabs or bleeds, an open sore that does not heal or is in the healing stage within two weeks, or if you have a family or personal history of melanoma, should be brought to the attention of your doctor.

Dr. Newton will be speaking on skin care at the Healthy Woman luncheon on Wednesday, June 15.

On July 4, we shoot fireworks, attend picnics, watch parades and otherwise celebrate our nation’s independence and the many freedoms we enjoy. But as you go through life, you’ll find out how important it is to work towards another type of freedom — financial freedom. That’s why you need to put strategies in place to help you work towards your own Financial Independence Day.

And there’s no way to “sugar-coat” this task, because it will be challenging. In recent years, a combination of factors — including depressed housing prices, rising health care costs, frozen or eliminated pension plans and the financial market plunge of 2008 and early 2009 — has made it more difficult for many of us to accumulate the resources we’ll need to enjoy the retirement lifestyle we’ve envisioned. In fact, the average American family faces a 37 percent shortfall in the income they will need in retirement, according to a recent report by consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

But now that we’ve gotten the “bad” stuff out of the way, let’s turn to the good news: You can do a great deal to work towards financial freedom during your retirement years. Here are some suggestions that can help:

• Saveandinvestmore. Obviously, the younger you are, the greater the benefit you’ll get by increasing your savings and investments. But whatever your age, you’ll find that it pays to save and invest more. During difficult economic times, of course, it’s not always easy to boost your savings and investments, but try to find ways that are as “automatic” as possible. For example, whenever you get a raise, increase your 401(k) contributions, which come directly from your paycheck. And whenever you get a “windfall,” such as a tax refund, try to use part of it for your IRA or another investment account.

• Rebalanceyourportfolio. It’s always a good idea to periodically rebalance your investments to make sure they are still aligned with your goals and risk

tolerance. But it’s especially important to rebalance as you get older and you near retirement. At this stage, you’ll want to decrease the volatility in your portfolio and lock in what gains you’ve achieved, so you may want to move some (but certainly not all) of your more aggressive investments into less volatile ones.

• Cutdownondebts. It’s easier said than done, but anything you can do to reduce your debt load will free up money to invest for your retirement. Work diligently to pay off whatever debts you can and examine your lifestyle to find areas in which you can reduce spending.

• Considerworkingpart-timeduringretirement. Many Americans are now living longer and enjoying happy, healthy retirements. In fact, the concept of “retirement” has changed so that it now includes any number of activities — including part-time work in a completely different area from one’s previous career. If you are willing to do even a little part-time work during your retirement years, you can greatly reduce the financial pressures you may face during this time of your life.

The 4th of July comes and goes quickly. So put strategies in place now to help you work towards your own Financial Independence Day.

TJM: What are the specific laws regarding children and car seats?Sanches: Under the Click It or Ticket Campaign, all passengers in the car, regardless of their age or location in the vehicle, must wear their seatbelt. Children under the age of 8, unless they are taller than 4’9”, must be in some type of car/booster seat. Babies must be in a rear-facing car seat until they are one year old and twenty pounds. Recently, experts have advised that it is a safety recommendation to keep infants rear-facing until they are two years old. This is safer, because infants’ bones and muscles are not developed to a point that would survive the impact of a collision. Failure to buckle-up can cost you $200 per unbuckled passenger.

TJM: What type of car seat is best?Sanches: This depends on the age of your child. First of all, you need to know how much your child weighs and be certain to read the manufacturer’s label on the box. They will give you an age requirement, weight range or both. If your child is 1-20 pounds, they must be in a rear-facing car seat. If they are twenty to sixty-five pounds, they are safest in a five-point harness. However, some booster seats are manufactured for this age range. Just be sure to check the label on the box. It is the parent or guardian’s obligation to ensure your child has the correct seat for his height and weight.

TJM: What do the statistics say about the importance of car seats?Sanches: Children who are in a car seat are seventy-one percent more likely to survive a collision. Those infants in rear-facing seats are seventy-five percent more likely to survive a collision. Again, that is why we are recommending parents keep their infants rear-facing until two years of age.

TJM: What other concerns should parents consider when traveling?Sanches: One of the greatest concerns is “after-market” products. These are toys and car accessories that have not been crash tested. Things like mirrors, toys that attach to the back of the seat and even portable DVD players that have not been permanently installed can become deadly weapons in a crash. The objects will travel at a tremendous speed of force. For instance, a portable DVD player that attaches to your head rest can leave its position at over one-hundred pounds of force.

TJM: When we put our children in their car seats, what should we look for?Sanches: Check to make sure the seat is installed tightly. If you can move the seat one inch forward or sideways, it is too loose. The retainer clip that clasps across the child’s chest should fit snugly at the arm pit level. If you can pinch the straps or fit two fingers underneath them, then they need to be tightened. Car seats older than six years and those that have been involved in a collision should be replaced.

Not just anyone is certified to install your car seat. Even policemen and other public officials have to be certified. Greg Sanches is available free of charge to install and inspect your car seat. He can be reached at 936-699-7349.

yourchild | why I love being a mom

It was a long three and a half years before my husband and I conceived a child by infertility treatment. Our prayers were finally answered, and we were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. Ella Grace Nelson was born on January 3, 2010. Now, at 16 months old, walking, talking and getting into everything she can possibly get her little hands on, she is becoming quite the handful! However, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I feel very blessed that I am able to stay at home with my daughter. It has allowed me to fully experience motherhood without missing a single milestone or moment of her life. I cherish the lively moments when we sing, dance, and laugh together. I cherish the quiet moments when I cradle her in my arms while reading a book or simply sitting with her in the rocking chair as she rests her head on my chest early in the mornings. And though the moments of stress, tantrums and tears are definitely trying, I know that by the help of God, I am molding my daughter day by day. I am grateful to God for allowing me to be a mother to Ella and our newest addition due to arrive in October. I cherish these blessings of motherhood each and every day.
