* REFLECTION *

Doors and gates are often fascinating. Doors

keep people out or open to allow entrance.

They can be a sign of defensiveness where some

are kept out or a sign of hospitality where

others are welcomed. Many also may be doors

into the spiritual journey. A Journey with Jesus

demands that we have the courage to take the

risk and open the next door of our lives.

In the first reading, Isaiah calls everyone to

come and see the glory of God. He proclaims his

vision with joy. The return of the people to

Jerusalem is marked with euphoria. Jerusalem is

once more the center of worship of God and a

sign to all the peoples in God’s care. Even those

who do not know God’s fame will amazingly de-

clare his glory, as they bring the survivors home.

The people come home rejoicing, because God

is their Saviour and he makes his people one in

mind and heart. In the second reading, we have

this question: Why suffering and trials? The

author takes into consideration the people who

most likely experienced times of threat and

persecution. Remember, trials are the means a

loving God who allow us to come to maturity.

Times of suffering can be teachable moments.

We are to become involved in our lives, lifting

our hands, strengthening our knees, making the

path straight. While life can be hard and im-

portant decisions difficult to make, life is beauti-

ful, for God loves and cares for us. The Gospel is

filled with questions, “What must I do to be

saved?” “Will only a few be saved?”

FROM THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH & PARISH

As usual, Jesus does not give a direct answer but tells a story about people who wish to enter a home after the owner has locked the doors. Despite their cries; “Lord, open to us!” the owner refuses to unbar the door. “I do not know where you come from?” Jesus, the homeowner, gives a harsh rebuke to the indecisive who are somewhat protected in a crowd but also shielded from an individual response. Remember, discipleship demands commitment to Christ and a continuous will to follow the Lord. In a reversal of expectations, those crying for entrance into the house will be left outside and people will be brought in from everywhere to fill the places. This is good news. Those who did not even know of the wonderful possibilities will enter and those who took their places for granted are on the outside. This message is both encouragement and challenge to complacency. This is a basic question. Are you on the road to Jerusalem with Jesus? Is the way of Jesus your way? God’s plan of universal acceptance may stand as an affront to us in our sometimes righteous attitudes. Think about this!

SEPTEMBER INTE NTIONS FOR PRAYER UNI VE RS AL:

That po l it ic ians sc ient is ts and economis ts work together to protect the wor ld ’s seas and oceans .

"No matter what any of us have done, God's gaze detaches us from our actions. He looks at us as we

really are deep down and reaches into all areas of our being.”

"A burden carried for one another" Already from the Book of Genesis, it is known that God created Eve to help Adam - to help each other. The person is needed by the other and in a special way refers to the marriage and family system, where the wife helps her husband, and he her. Life shows that they will not only to help themselves, but often they cannot help themselves. An effec-tive help can be shown to the other only when he knows the other and knows what his real needs are. Help in a diffi-cult situation and to make Joy - these are the basic tasks of loving your neighbor. Sometimes, in the marriage coun-seling center, I was able to give such basic advice: "Treat her or him as any ordinary man - just like your neighbor"; because the unfulfilled expectations of immature conjugal love cause that people in marriage do not only help them-selves, but on the contrary: they destroy themselves and harm themselves, although they planned that it would be different. Again, one has to appeal to the grace of the sacrament, ask for this grace and pray for it together. Man helps the other most effectively when he is a tool in the hands of God himself, who knows best what he needs. To-gether, they are to develop them - this is the "we" that John Paul II calls "Com-munio personarum" (community of persons) is a joint task of the spouses. "We,” we together in every matter" - towards the world, family and children. The family becomes strong when they help one another and are united. Help can be of different kinds, but the essen-tial condition must be selflessness. God gives gifts to man without his merits. A gift only then is a real gift when it is unselfish. And in the family there are services of a servant, for which it is expected, if not to pay, in any case a rematch. It is a truly unselfish gift. People today can neither give nor be able to give. The powerful word “business” has supplanted ordinary human kindness. And it should be different: "I am doing you well because I am just a hu-man being and I treat you humanely." What can a man do in our time?! Saint John Paul II persistently calls for the civilization of love precisely because humanity loses the features of humanity. Human - this is the Samaritan who, gratuitously healed the wounds and paid for the care of the needy stranger. And modern man is like those bandits who rob and rob. Aggression becomes an ordinary way of mutual treatment. A conscious effort of all people of good will is needed to change this state. At least on Sunday during the Mass, Catholics repeat: "I have sinned in thought, word, deed and neglect." How many people accuse themselves of neglecting to do good to others? Everyone is re-sponsible for everyone, but in a special way he is responsible for his family and relatives.
