GK Steven P. Gearhart

Greetings Brother Knights,

The cold and miserable winter is now over. According

to the calendar spring is finally here and we have moved

the clocks forward to accommodate more daylight and an

opportunity to complete the honey-do list. Of course we

continue to temporarily change the thermostat between the

air conditioning mode and the heat. However, I still find

cutting grass more satisfying than shoveling snow. The

Azaleas and Dog Woods are in full bloom and the Yellow

Jasmine is so fragrant this time of the year. God has a neat

way for us to come out of hibernation and enjoy his world.

March was a very busy and stressful time for the

Council. The 2016 SC Catholic Men’s Conference was a

success. The attendance was not what I anticipated but I

will commend those who attended and attest they learned

a whole lot about themselves. Next year it will be in

Greenville and I suspect those who attended this year will

make the pilgrimage in 2017. Question arose as to how

you are going to calculate the man hours put into the

planning. We had 43 Knights from Council 11991, 11910

Summerville, 11471 Moncks Corner, 6726 Hanahan, and

8900 N. Charleston. I tracked meetings, attendance and

planning during the year and calculated 2469 man hours

expended. I truly could not have done it without the

support. Where were you on March 5th?

The Fish Fries were another success. This event is

basically the only major fund raiser that the Council hosts.

Other than your dues, this is the only major income the

Council depends on throughout the year to support

different charitable needs. This requires an enormous

amount of planning, organization and trust that the

volunteers show up. Thanks to PGK Howard Jackson,

Waylon Moody and the cast of many who did a

Gearhart continued from page 1……magnificent job this

year. If we could get the publicity figured out we could

have had more but then we couldn’t feed any more. Final

total was 40 Council members donated 320 hours and the

net income was $3,160.00. Absolutely fantastic! Where

were you on March 11th and 18th?

I personally want to welcome Alfredo “Fred” Ancheta

and Socrates “Soc” Tinga to our Order. On March 18th,,

during the fish fry, the District Deputy and myself along

with Mike Cousino, John Flinn and Frank Bautista held a

1st Degree Exemplification in the AMC using the Supreme

approved video. Fred and Soc agreed to be the first ever to

take part in this and I must say unless you have seen the

presentation throw no stones. I would have no problem

conducting another 1st Degree in this manner again to

accommodate the needs of a candidate wishing to join our

Order. We have acquired two dynamic Brother Knights

who will make a difference to our Council in the future.

On Saturday, March 20th we traveled to St Thomas where

Council 8900 hosted a 2nd and 3rd Degree. I want to

congratulate again Fred Ancheta, Soc Tinga, Lance

Laidlaw, Hector Burgess-Rodriquez and Omar Bellique

who all have attained 3rd Degree privileges.

At the Business Meeting on April 7th, the Trustees are to

present to the Council the list of potential Officers for

Fraternal Year 2016-2017. I can attest that we have a core

of outstanding and knowledgeable Knights that are

stepping up to serve. These Knights have previously

served in various Director Chairs earlier and are now

returning to reassure the forward progress of this Council

continues. Now in doing so, this will require new

Directors to support the Council. The positions are

Church, Family, Community, Membership, Youth and

Council Directors. If you have any organizational skills

please inquire and step up. I personally assure you that I

will help you next year in your assignment. The future of

this Council is on its members. If you love the Knights of

Columbus and what they stand for and what they (we)

have accomplished, please volunteer. God gave you a

talent - it could be in leading men, planning events,

building projects, promoting the Knights, recruiting or

cooking. In any event, don’t you think it is time to pay

him back instead of sitting in a chair with a remote?

I will say it again and again. I am so very proud of this

Council and the support you have given me for the last

two years. It has not been easy but we have a cast of Past

Grand Knights, Past State Deputies, and Past District

Deputies who have supported me throughout. Other

Councils are envious of the numbers we get at the O&D

Meetings, the Business Meetings and the Council Socials.

How do we do it? We just help each other when in need.

Deputy Grand Knight: Jerry Caolie

I have been a Knight since October 1985. I

received my First Degree through Council 6726,

Hanahan-Goose Creek, Second and Third

Degrees at Council 7469, St. Joan of Arc in

Yorktown, Virginia. I was exemplified into the

Fourth Degree in February 2008 and an active

member with Msgr. Richard C. Madden

Assembly 1900, Summerville. I have previously

held positions as Inside Guard, Recorder and

Warden (interim), and the Purser with Assembly

1900, soon to be installed as Captain.

Lynn and I have been married for 35 years and

are parishioners at Immaculate Conception since

1981. We have three adult children; Patrick,

Sarah and Miriam and six grandchildren all

residing in the Goose Creek area. I have remained

actively involved in the parish as Eucharistic

Minister, and Minister of Hospitality, and I

anticipate great success for the Council this year

and I strongly encourage ALL of our Knights to

get involved! Many hands make for light work

and we have much work to accomplish this

fraternal year particularly by improving

membership, not necessarily by numbers but by

member dedication. I ask that all of us share our

time and talents to actively support the various

Council, parish and family activities. As the

motto of Grand Knight Russ Whited states, let's

all make Council 11991 a FULL HOUSE!

If you are a Knight, be a Knight!

“A note from your Deputy Grand Knight”

My Brothers in Christ,

I hope this finds everyone physically and spiritually

refreshed coming out of the Lenten Season culminating

with our Easter celebration of Christ’s Resurrection.

Because of our church commitments, we had a relatively

light month except for the two very intense yet highly

successful Fish Fries. Many thanks to Howard Jackson

and all who worked or supported these events. Now we

are back in the saddle and moving ahead with our

charitable work again.

Let me give you a preview of some upcoming events

where our council will need some help. On Tuesday April

19, we will be sending a contingent out to help with

Special Olympics Area 6 Spring Games at Fort Dorchester

High School. We will be helping out in running the

various games of the event. I will be leaving from our ICC

parking lot NO LATER THAN 7:15am and we can expect

to return by 1:45pm that afternoon. I can transport 3

additional men. We will work out arrangements, if we

need additional vehicles. Please contact me ASAP if you

would like to help and I may still be able to order you a

tee shirt. In addition, I am still looking for someone to act

as council liaison to Special Olympics Area 6.

On Thursday April 21, we will be holding our annual

Community Appreciation Social. Special events

happening that night will be the presentation of

ceremonial checks to Special Olympics and Berkeley

Citizens. Many of you worked very hard last fall in our

Tootsie Roll Drives, auction and other fund raising events

to help build a record contribution to our State Columbus

Hope Foundation. From that Foundation, we apply for

grants to these two wonderful charities. We will also be

recognizing a special guest that evening who was selected

for their contribution to our community. Please plan on

attending and having your hard work recognized as well.

Speaking of the dreaded Tootsie Roll Drives, I anticipate

setting up a Drive in the near future. I will have met with

the Officers and Directors in late March and hopefully we

will have a date set and the signup sheets available by the

Business Meeting in April. As always, I thank you for

your valuable time and support in our annual charity

events. Peace in your lives. Christ Is Risen! Alleluia!

Alleluia!

Warden’s Message

To assist in facilitating our monthly meetings, here are a few

reminders:

All Knights must possess a current and signed membership

card. You will be asked to produce your membership card

by the Warden, the Inside Guard, or the Outside Guard.

During the business meetings and O&D meetings, please

be respectful when a brother knight has the floor. It can

become distracting and confusing when there are other

conversations on different subjects in different areas of the

room.

Cell phones should be silenced or turned off during the

meeting. There should be NO texting during the meetings.

Whoever has the floor should have our undivided

attention.

Your Brother Knight, Daryl J. Lareau, Warden

Remember…….Knights proud of their

membership will wear their name badges

anytime they are at Church.

Battery Charge Time!

It is the time of year when I always wonder if I have it in me to do

any more - More meetings, more socials, more fundraisers, more

I, but usually I use them to help push me on in the direction of the

next year.

So what do you use to re-charge your batteries? Sunday Mass?

Your children or grandchildren? A good book? A few days off? I

don’t know the correct answer and I don’t think it is always the

A profit of $3,160.00 was the result of 40 different people

working 320 man hours during our two fish fries. That is

about $10 a man hour for everyone’s hard work and

participation while preparing, cooking and cleaning up for

the 700 meals or so we served. Thanks to those who

provided all the tasty and plentiful deserts which were

very much appreciated by all. Thanks 11991 for all you

So with that in mind here is my attempt at listing what is left to

finish this fraternal year and begin the next one:

• April meetings (business, degrees, social)

• Traveling ICON –in District #13 9 April to 6 May, 2016

• State Convention

• A very important item of K of C paperwork – the SP-7

• Elections (coming at us quickly)

• The start of the new fraternal year (1 July) – plan for the

year…

Did I forget anything? I’m sure I did! But I hope that you take a

the difference between running in place and finishing a race. I hope

that you all finish your race.

The South Carolina Catholic Men’s

Conference, March 5, 2016

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the

Knights of Columbus Council 11991 were very proud to

host the 3rd Annual Catholic Men's Conference on

Saturday March 5, 2016. This Conference was sponsored

by the Diocese of Charleston Diocese and the South

Carolina Knights of Columbus. Knights and Catholic Men

from across the State of South Carolina assembled into

our Church to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a Mass

presented by Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone, Bishop of

the Charleston Diocese, along with distinguished Priests

from across the State of South Carolina to include our

very own Reverend Jason Caganap, CRM, Pastor of

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

More than 300 Catholic Men attended Mass, had an

opportunity to have their Confession heard, and received

Holy Communion; it was indeed a sight to behold. Special

guests included Fr. Dwight Longenecker Pastor of the

'Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church' of Greenville,

SC, Dr. Ray Guarendi, a renowned Clinical Psychologist,

and Chad Judice, a nationally known motivational

speaker. The purpose of the Conference was to help build

better Catholic Men by helping them become better

husbands, fathers and members of the Church and

Community.

April Diaper Drive

My Brother Knights,

At the April social we once again will be collecting

diapers (sizes N thru 6) and/or a monitory donation

for the Low Country Pregnancy Center. This is a not

for Profit Organization providing a valuable free

service to young women that find themselves in need

of consoling and support for unplanned pregnancies.

They also provide other needed services to these

women from ultra sounds to medical exams so that

more mothers have the needed support to keep their

gifts from God or support to place them in new

homes. Thank you for your continued support to this

worthy organization.

PRAYER OF THE MONTH:

Act of Adoration

Holy Thursday, the day on which Catholics celebrate the institution

of the Sacrament of Holy Communion at the Last Supper, falls

most often in April, and so it is no surprise that the Catholic Church

dedicates this month to devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Other

Christians, most notably the Eastern Orthodox, some Anglicans,

and some Lutherans, believe in the Real Presence; that is, they

believe, as we Catholics do, that the bread and wine become the

Body and Blood of Christ in the sacrament of the altar (though only

Catholics define this change as “transubstantiation”). However,

only the Catholic Church has developed the practice of Eucharistic

adoration. Every Catholic Church contains a tabernacle in which

the Body of Christ is reserved between Masses, and the faithful are

encouraged to come and pray before the Blessed Sacrament.

April 22nd, 2016. As of, March 21, 2016 we have

exceeded the number of shoes collected for any other

drive.

Lions Club Eyeglasses

For the 1st quarter of 2016 we were able to provide the

Goose Creek Lions Club with 41 pair of glasses and 16

cases. This was similar to what we did in 2015 so it looks

like we are on track to do as well as last year. Again

individuals at ICC have shown their compassion for those

people that are in need. Brother Knights please continue

to solicit you families, friends and neighbors for

eyeglasses to provide the Lions Club. Thanks to each and

you that has been able to help in any way.

Stamps for Sisters of the Holy Cross (Feed the

Hungry)

We are currently still working on our 8th box of Stamps.

Membership

We currently have recruited 14 new members for the

council and have had several transfers. One of the new

knights related that he joined because he had observed the

involvement and good things that the knights were doing

and wanted to be a part of them. We still need an

additional 2 new members to meet the membership

requirement for STAR council, but we also need 6

insurance members or annuity. Any member that has been

a knight less than 10 years can take out a $100 annuity and

this will count towards our goal for insurance. You can

continue to add to this annuity or just leave it.

Council Officers

Brother Knights the Trustees of the council need your

help. We are looking for a good men who want to see

their council grow and prosper. We need individuals that

willing to help their council by moving through the chair

officers. You will have support of t individuals, PGK’s

and your fellow officers. SUPPORT YOUR COUNCIL –

GET INVOLVED.

Frequent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is a path to spiritual

growth. In this Act of Adoration, we thank Christ for His

continued presence among us, not just through His grace but

physically, in the Holy Eucharist. His Body is the Bread of Angels,

offered for our strength and salvation.

PRAYER FOR OUR CITIZENS: Continue to pray for our

citizens, particularly those in this, our United States, who have lost

their lives or been injured by continuing senseless violence in our

country; for the safety of members of Law Enforcement, Fire

Service and Emergency Services; and for those misplaced due to

severe and dangerous weather.

PRAYER FOR OUR RELIGIOUS: We ask for your continued

prayers for our SK Jerry Caoile as he continues his studies for the

Diaconate program, and for those other young men and women

progressing in their religious discernment and studies.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Continue to keep our military

servicemen and women – those who are now where many of us

once were - in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those in public

safety.

“Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military

life. Keep them close to You and help them live the

Commandments. Lord, Jesus, give them courage to serve their

Country with honor and dignity. Be with them when they are in

danger strengthening them when they face hardships. And Lord,

grant that, when their service is finished, they may return to us

sound in mind, body and soul. In particular we remember those

who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow man and

Country. Amen.”

“It is a great time to be a Catholic and always a great time to be

an active Knight.” We ask all Sir Knights to keep actively

recruiting our patriotic Knights.

“Wee Chuckle” The following was shared by SK Jerry Tenney: “The children were

lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch.

At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a

note, and posted it on the apple tray: 'Take only ONE. God is

watching.' Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of

the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had

written a note, 'Take all you want. God is watching the apples...'”

Veteran’s Victory Home, Walterboro: To honor our continuing

patriotic obligations, we ask that all continue to bring toiletry

articles to any of our meetings and socials throughout the year.

These items will be collected and shared with the Walterboro

Veteran’s Victory Home and the Sisters in Kingstree. Also, the

Veteran’s Victory Home also asks for craft items, books (prefer

large print), periodicals and newspapers. Some of these items are

used in therapy sessions. The adult coloring books with colored

pencils are exceptionally popular.

Our Lady of Joyful Hope: The dedicated Sisters in Kingstree

continue to help those in desperate need with the basics of food,

clothing and shelter, and humbly ask for help in replenishing their

food pantry. We will continue to collect non-perishable food items

to help with restocking. At each meeting, social or gathering we

will have a box available in which to put any type of non-perishable

canned, bulk or paper goods. These we will then deliver to the

Sisters at Our Lady of Joyful Hope.

Respect Life

As of April 1, approximately 4,090 babies have been saved

Leading the charge to end abortion in our country is not for the

faint of heart. Those of us who speak up for the preborn are often

vilified. Our reputations maligned and our integrity questioned.

Add in the cares of this world—health issues, family troubles, work

problems—and speaking up for preborn children can take its toll on

a person.

That’s why, during these days of the Easter season, we are invited

to turn our focus to the transforming power of the cross of Christ.

Are you longing for more from this life? Do you hunger for the

abundant life Jesus promised? Take time to focus our thoughts on

the Easter message and be reminded of God’s glory and sanctifying

work in our hearts.

All are encouraged to visit the OFL Resource Center and check out

the more than 180 resources that are available to you. And come

back often, as we’re always updating the Resource Center with

more articles, videos, and podcasts.

https://onlineforlife.org/resource-center/”

Each year approximately 1.2 million babies die from abortion.

Help make abortion unthinkable and unavailable in America!
